Cowboys 16, Vikings 10; Sam Hurd has ankle sprain.
Some quick thoughts on the game.
Sam Hurd: Right now they are saying X-Rays "unclear", which means they have to analyze them better tomorrow, as well as perform an MRI. It looks like this may be the dreaded high ankle sprain, but who knows. What is clear is that the Cowboys have some tough decisions to make regarding the receiver position and they will definitely be looking at the names on the cut lists in the next week.
Richard Bartel: Not the greatest performance by a NFL quarterback but not that bad either. He minimized poor decisions and rarely tried to force the throw. I was disappointed with the accuracy on his long throws, especially knowing that his arm strength was one of his pluses. No interceptions though, so all in all a good night.
Running Backs: We have some talented guys in the back field and they are all very young. Tashard Choice is exceptional in pass protection and blitz pickups and has great vision to go along with decisive cuts. And he is our THIRD running back.
Special Teams: Had one shaky kick coverage but overall looked pretty dang good. McBriar was on fire, Nick Folk is money and coverage units played well. Danny Amendola is an okay returner, almost broke one for a touchdown. He definitely has the vision, unfortunately his size and speed play against him.
Defense: For the most part I was impressed with the defense. Not a lot of big plays given up and Tearrius George was a beast. I had my eye on Bobby Carpenter and I have to say I was less than impressed. He just doesn't diagnose the play quick enough and it seems he's playing a bit tentative.

Hurd has high ankle sprain
The good news is that the X-rays on Sam Hurd’s left leg were negative. The bad news is that he suffered a high left ankle sprain.
It was considered a minor medical miracle when T.O. came back from a high ankle sprain in three weeks to play in the Cowboys’ playoff loss last season. Hurd, who will have an MRI to determine the severity of his sprain, hopes to play in the Sept. 7 season opener in Cleveland.
“Hopefully it only takes a couple days or maybe a week,” said Hurd, who was wearing a protective boot. “I think I heal fast, and hopefully with the Lord’s will, I can heal fast.”
That’s being awfully optimistic, but Hurd feels a tremendous sense of urgency due to the receiving corps’ rash of injuries. Miles Austin (knee) is out for the opener, and Isaiah Stanback (shoulder) is doubtful.
“Miles’ thing is very serious,” Hurd said. “That’s a knee, and a knee is something you don’t want to play with. People get ankle sprains all the time and bounce back.”
But they don’t bounce back in a week from this kind of ankle sprain. However, the Cowboys are holding out hope that Hurd can.
“It’d be early to rule him out,” Jerry Jones said. “I understand the nature of his injury, but not the severity of his injury, and nobody else does, either.”

Romo is like Favre, he’ll make any WR good…no need to give up high picks for a guy. Go with our guys and wait till Hurd and Miles come back…

go with what guys!!
three of our top five are out.
Hurd,Stanback and Austin are out or atleast the first week.
That leaves one spot for a receiver if dallas carries six receivers.
And I dont want Romo to be anything close to Favre, if he is, he’ll cost the team more games than wins them

that really sucks. We can’t catch a break.
Amendola had a good night in the0 return game. I didn’t catch the game but, I listened to parts on the radio. Brad Sham said most of his returns were in double digits which is good.

Garrett’s a smart man. The immense depth at both RB and TE can be used to our advantage in the absence of Wideouts.

Dallas needs to get a legitimate receiver now with Hurds high ankle sprain
You cant go to cleveland with two starters and a undrafted rookie. I dont see Stanback,Hurd or Austin being able to play.
I suspect dallas will trade for a receiver within days.
Call detroit and see about the availability of Furrey or Mcdonald

by APerfectStar on Aug 29, 2008 2:03 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, they can adapt
I don’t see this as a huge emergency because he’s still not a starter and they can work around it in the game plan without expecting much dropoff in productivity. but cleveland’s weak secondary is something we’d like to exploit, and it does hurt that.
it puts us in a very tenuous position that has to be addressed one way or another, but options open up more after week 1 in terms of being able to get a guy to try for a few games without having to commit to pay for the season. plus they may have more of a feel after that for how quickly all 3 are healing. although stanback’s not necessarily a reliable solution for any duration to replace Hurd and Austin.
we’ll have to see after the MRI if we get a more accurate estimate of the recovery time, and that will help determine the urgency…

Watching the replay of the game on NFLN
And I swear Hurd hurt his ankle on one of his cuts, not on the tackle. His ankle rolled on the cut, which would explain why he got caught from behind by a LB.
by mhuff13 on Aug 28, 2008 11:14 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That may be, but he wasn't favoring the foot when he was running after the cut
but Hurd isn’t that fast at all, so a fast linebacker can run him down..

Admittedly I don't have the power of replay
But he seemed to be running ok immediately after the stumble. However, with ankle injuries, the one time you’re going to be able to move is immediately after it happens. I agree that it looked like he turned it there.
I think we sign a WR today. Amendola isn’t ready, Jefferson is a #5 at best.

Jerry not looking for another receiver for Cleveland
Jerry Jones ruled out acquiring a receiver who has never worked with Tony Romo. His logic is that by the time such a receiver got in a rhythm with Romo, Sam Hurd and Miles Austin would be ready to go.
“We won’t have anybody out there that has not been on the team trying to move the ball against Cleveland,” Jerry said.
by scottmaui on Aug 28, 2008 11:29 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
again, believe 10% of what Jerry says, 90% of the rest is BS
Thats the dumbest reasoning for not bringing a receiver i’ve read. Jerry was probably on the phone calling other teams at the same time looking for a receiver.
Jerry also said that Drew Henson was really coming along, two days later he was cut…..
Jerry said three days before the draft that he would never draft a kicker, three days later, Nick Folk was drafted….
He’s the king of double talk….

I guess you haven't heard of the 53 man roster
because under your logic, I guess Dallas would be carrying seven receivers
T.O, Crayton,Hurd,Stanback,Austin,Amendola and Jefferson. That’s not happening
Amendola is nothing special. The only reason he’s even part of the conversation of making the roster is because of all the injuries at the receiver position. If there wasn’t these injuries, Amendola would have no chanceb of making this roster.

Place Stanback on the IR then
Roll with TO, Crayton, Austin, Hurd, Amendola and Jefferson. Hurd is more valuable than Stanback. This way Hurd stays on the active roster and we can be patient with his return because it could be 6+ weeks before we see him again. Who knows when, or if Stanback can come back.
This really may force them to place Stanback on IR.
I really can’t see them cutting Amendola or Jefferson and having 3 WRs with an unknown time table of returning.

right now we have five on the roster as depth
with only T.O and crayton healthy and three injured. dallas would need two more receivers to take to games. That makes seven.
if Dallas puts Stanback on IR, which I think is a good chance of happening now with all the injuries to the receiver position, then that would open up one of those spots, who I think will be Jefferson and a veteran from another team, either via cuts or trade. We would then have six receivers on the 53 man roster.
by Deke on Aug 29, 2008 7:50 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
the only way Stanback goes on IR
is if he decides to have surgery on his shoulder but thats his decision, not the Cowboys.
We can go into the Cleveland game with only 3 WRs because we can line up Witten and Bennett out wide if we need to.

by Terry on Aug 29, 2008 7:58 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dallas just might make that decision for him
Dallas cant wait three or four weeks for him to see if treatment will help, and even if it does, he’ll still have trouble reaching out and up for Balls thrown his way. He’s going to need surgery regardless.
We heard all camp from people how Berger was pushing Kosier for the starting spot. I certainly didn’t see it and I didn’t get that impression form Grizz’s reports either. Dallas certainly didn’t think much of what we had on the roster at the guard position, contrary to all the praise that has been thrown out about Berger,Mcquistan and Marten, they thought so much about those three playing guard that they had to go out and trade for a starting guard.
And I dont buy what Jerry Double talker Jones is saying about our receivers on the roster either. Bennett has all he can do to understand his own assignments and responsibilities out there, he’s just not ready to start.
by Deke on Aug 29, 2008 8:21 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stanback has to go on IR now.
Yeah, I agree we can stumble through 4 weeks or so with our current top 3 (even though the #3 is really poor), but what if someone else gets hurt? I just don’t see how we can carry enough WRs to give us any cushion unless Stanback goes on IR.

Not everyone who gets cut is a scrub
sometimes there are people that don’t make the final 53 because someone is equal to them and they make a lot less. Not only that, salaries for vets become guaranteed after week 1, so maybe teams don’t want to roll with someone with a high base.

what a game. that will get some attention. I wonder how much he played, I think he had 2 sacks and 3 hurries in just 2 series. and i wonder who he was up against, if it was just one really weak guy, or if he’s really that unblockable. I think he made at least one play from the left side too.

We don’t need another WR at this point!
Hind sight: I saw him out there to start with and could not believe it ( commented how stupid it was) , then pow off he limps.
Jerry’s resoning is sound: they bring in a WR ( any WR ) by the time he is ready to play, hopfully Austin is back.
Amadola showed me very little against the scrubs, but he did catch the ball, but thats it. I thought his punt returns were no better than Craytons and his kick off returns, well were about the same.
Jefferson looked good till he let the ball go, but it wasn’t even close he was clearly down. Still u don’t like to see it. After that I didn’t see any more of him. I wonder if they pulled him to protect him?
Carpenter sucks, I say move roy to LB’er what use is he at safty except to make us more suseptable to the pass on 1st and 2nd down and we already have that with B. James. also, if he is only playing those downs, he can play ST coveage units for the money he is making.
If T. George is a beast, were was he during the whole Camp?
I agree I think a two tied end offence is the way to go ( infact I posted it a week or so ago)
I also agree with putting Standback on IR, man if that shoulder is going to keep poping out causing you to fumble, what good are you. To bad tho his returns looked good.

And many of you said I was being TRITE when I said Barbi played like he was estrogen-fueled…how bout now? haha just kidding…we all have our doubts. On a serious note, can every Cowboy fan do me a favor and say a prayer for our uninjured recievers? For real, can they plllllease stop dropping like flies. I don’t mean to be knee-jerky, but you never like to see them go down…

Mistakes cleaned up
One really good thing about the game, after all the turnovers and penalties in the first three games, and seeing Wade talk about too many mistakes in Hard Knocks:
Total Turnovers: 0
Penalties-Yards: 2-10 (Hannah and Amendola each had 1 false start in the second half)
That is a huge improvement in the mental part of the game.
I know these aren’t the starters, but it says something in general about the team focusing on these aspects, and hopefully carries over to the starters and the regular season as well.

Carpenter disappoints
Sorry Bobby, but as a 3rd year, first round pick, you should have dominated against a Viking squad of Free Agents and lower round picks with less experience. Even if your knowledge of the game is not there yet due to lack of playing time, your pure athletic ability should have allowed you to dominate less athletic players.
I don’t think Carp has much chance and particularly if you apply Jerry’s thinking on the the guard replacements “if they look like Larry Allen out there don’t get too excited considering the level of competition.” Considering the level of competition and weak play by Carp I dont see much up side for him.

At least the backup backers showed something.
Tyson Smith and Terrius George made some really good plays—plays that you woulda wanted Carp to make.
I just don’t get it with Carp. He’s a vocal leader and athletic. He just seems to get blasted every single time he goes head up with a guy, but if you ask him to wrap up the guy’s ankles, he’s all on it. Maybe he’s too lanky or doesn’t get low enough to be a decent run stopper. He’s had every chance now this preseason. For once I would like to see him knock a RB backwards.
That #38 sure should wrap up!

Bigrigg, he's a pansy, hence the name Barbi
and I’d use the other “p” word but that would make Grizz mad, however, its the more appropriate word.
The dude is just too soft and not nearly tough enough to really play at this level.

It's really disappointing
I was hoping he’d play like a beast, but he just didn’t get it done. I think he just can’t handle pressure situations. He has talent and the size/speed, but just can’t put it together when it matters. If he can’t do it against the scrubs MIN had out there, what hope does he have.

What really makes you wonder about the guy,
is that he thought he nailed it last night. Boy, is he going to be shocked when he watches the tape.

This is bad bad bad.
I hope this means a lot of 2 TE sets, but even in that case, there is a real chance we are gonna have to see Danny Amendola against live bullets at some point against Cleveland.
All you Amendola lovers ready for that? I’m not.
Still no word on Stanback, it would be great if he opted not to have the surgery right now like he said he might.
Lets hope for 3 smooth recoveries, because we cant play too many games like this.
