Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster prediction
My prediction for the Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster.
| Offense | Defense | ||
| QB | Tony Romo Brad Johnson |
NT | Jay Ratliff Tank Johnson |
| RB | Marion Barber Felix Jones Tashard Choice |
DE | Chris Canty Marcus Spears Jason Hatcher Stephen Bowen |
| FB | Deon Anderson | OLB | DeMarcus Ware Greg Ellis Anthony Spencer Justin Rogers Erik Walden |
| TE | Jason Witten Tony Curtis Martellus Bennett |
ILB | Bradie James Zach Thomas Kevin Burnett Bobby Carpenter |
| WR | Terrell Owens Patrick Crayton Sam Hurd Miles Austin Isaiah Stanback Mike Jefferson |
CB | Terence Newman Anthony Henry Adam Jones Mike Jenkins Orlando Scandrick Evan Oglesby |
| T | Flozell Adams Marc Colombo Doug Free Pat McQuistan |
SS | Roy Williams Courtney Brown |
| C | Andre Gurode Cory Procter |
FS | Ken Hamlin Pat Watkins |
| G | Leonard Davis Kyle Kosier Joe Berger Montrae Holland |
P/K/LS | Mat McBriar Nick Folk L.P. Ladouceur |
| Notes: - Very tough decision at WR. I picked Jefferson because I think he's a little better as a functional WR right now than Amendola. But, I still think they get a WR from another team's cuts so Jefferson (or if it's Amendola) shouldn't get comfortable. - I kept Walden because he made some plays on special teams last night and I think they like his potential. - Oglesby beat out Ball easily in my book, so if Ball makes it, they must see something we haven't seen yet. Maybe it would be special teams potential which Oglesby hasn't shown a lot of in preseason. - With Montrae Holland on board, someone had to go and that someone is probably Marten. |

Solid Picks
This is pretty much what my roster looks like. Everyone is rooting so hard for Amendola that it’s easy to overlook the obvious, that he looks like a waiver wire receiver. His supposed flexibility as a punt returner isn’t anything special, and in general hasn’t shown much ability. From what I’ve seen, I’m taking Jefferson over him. I think Carpenter is a lot closer to the bubble than most people will admit. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him cut.
Also glad to see you kept my pet cat Walden.
I pretty much agree with your list. Good job, Grizz.

No way they cut Carp
Good list Grizz…no real surprises.
I agree with you on jefferson over Danny Boy. I was rooting for amendola…but he just never made a case for himself….and his lack of speed and strength sealed his fate. I agree with the rest of the Roster.Although Carp hasn’t impressed there’s no way they cut a #1 draft pick and let him walk with no compensation.

If Carp stays
it’ll just be because he’s buddies with Romo and Witten.
The Bears cut Colombo and he was a #1 pick. Brian Bozworth lasted about as long as Bobby C. I think that this team is deep enough now and talented enough up front to gamble on some younger players with better potential than to keep hoping a wishing Carp will show a flash of the flash he showed in that playoff game against Seattle.
That #38 sure should wrap up!

I don’t think tony and Jason have much say in that….LOL
They won’t let a #1 pick just walk…If they decide to cut ties…they’ll get a pick for him…prolly a late round….but Jerry will get something in return. Regardless its not gonna happen this year….we don’t have enough depth at ILB to justify this move.

yep no way on Carp
and I disagree on Stanback. He’s going to IR. There not keeping 3 injured WRs on the active roster and from all reports out Amendola is ahead of Jefferson.
A friend of mine who I work with played with Austin for two years. He still keeps in contact with Austin. He told me tonight he sent Austin a message through Face Book the other day and he sent him a message back. Austin told him his rehab is going good, but it’s tough. He expects to be back on the field sometime in Sept.

special teams ??...he'd never contribute there either....
you do not keep a 6th WR project with no speed, nor do you keep a 3rd-4th string PR that will never take punts away from AJ, etc………he’d be inactive every game…..no thanks…
I hope this summer time romance will end soon with this “Rudy” character…Out of all the free agent WR’s we’ve brought in over the years…..I have never seen such an over hyped long shot than this clown, and this guy has shown the least of any of them….Recter, Urban, Copper, Jackson, Jefferson, etc. etc. etc…you name ‘em…they’ve been better..I’d rather keep Hannah as a 4th TE, just as fast, bigger, can contribute on ST, and has good hands…

Rodney (Hannah) gets no respect!
Hannah looks better and better. As the announcers on the last game said, the Cowboys do have three other tight ends, but this basketball player-turned-TE looks like a player. Someone will snatch him if cut.

I like Rodney Hannah
but you cant justify carrying four tightends and he’s still raw and learning the position. I hope we can get him back on the practice squad.
Our roster was pretty much set entering camp and this has taken away from the Hard Knock series as there really isn’t geat story lines to follow. Going into camp, the areas on this roster battles I looked at were the sixth receiver spot, the sixth corner spot, whether they bring someone in as a better option to Brad Johnson. The starters and backups were pretty much set.
by Deke on Aug 29, 2008 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think you can
He would just be a roster inactive on game day.
Anywho, it comes down to who is a better player Procter or Hannah. I think we can get by on 9 lineman, especially since a lot of our lineman can play multiple positions along the line.
by quincyyyyy on Aug 29, 2008 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I still feel T George's performance last night makes it tough on the staff to make that last cut.
I’d take the chance of keeping T George, and slipping Walden on the practice squad…
I could care less about which O linemen doesn’t make the cut…I’m not high on any of them…must be the focus of next years first day draft.
Jefferson is the better conventional WR, like Grizz said…..nuff said
Alan Ball will be playing elsewhere, unless he gets put on the practice squad..
I think the suprise of this roster will be the addition of a 4th TE, Rodney Hannah…and the fact that we’ll keep just 5 WR’s going into the season……..TO,Crayton,Hurd,Austin,Stanback……

I'm not too worried about not having enough bullets for Romo to work with...
He is going to tear up Cleveland’s pourous secondary…..2 TE formations, or Witten and/or Felix Jones in the nickle slot offense ….let the fireworks begin…you put TO, Crayton, Witten, Bennett, MBIII, and Felix on the same field at the same time….there is no need for 3 WR sets…or carrying 6 WR’s ….
we’re not going to waste a roster spot to have a completely inexperienced “insurance policy” on the sidelines like Jefferson, who’ll NEVER see the field once our wounded start trickling back within a month or so……..we roll with what we got…..If we were to keep a 4th TE in Hannah, who can play special teams and double as an H back/FB in jumbo formations with 3 TE’s……which I expect to see near the goal line often this year would be more beneficial IMO…You take 5 linemen, 3 TE’s, and a FB in front of MBIII at the goal line and shove it down their throats….Smash Mouth Baby….

Sorry to say but
I also agree with Amendola’s being 86’d. I really took a Iiking to him but he really didn’t do much in the preseason. I still think he’d be quite good with Romo throwing him the quick 8-10 routes. Still you have to make due with what you’ve got and he barely did anything this preseason. He really reminds me of a miniature Witten with his sure hands, his strong work ethic, and even the way he carries himself. I’ll be sad to see him go.
I wish Hannah was a better blocker (I assume this is his weakness right now?) because I think he’s probably a better pass catcher than Curtis based solely on a gut feeling and from what little I’ve seen.
Was kinda hoping Dowayne Davis would step but I didn;t see much of him at all aside from a few tackles.
Good work Grizz I don’t see anything I disagree with there.

But he is steady. And better than Amendola. Sorry everybody, we didnt get Welker 2.0.

you mean this Wes Welker?
The one that was bounced from team to team until he had a legit QB throwing at him? Even TD record setting Randy Moss sucked when he had scrubs throwing him the ball.
I still think Amendola will make someones team and do well if we cut him. The only reason I would cut him is if you think Jefferson is better right now because to me Amendola has more upside. Give him 4 quarters in a real game with Romo throwing to him and I think a lot of you are singing a different tune.

yup and that what Amendoa does
but not as polished. Amendola is a rookie. Welker is a veteran and has been around awhile. This doesn’t happen overnight you know. The kid needs to get better no question, but that comes with experience just like Welker had to.
Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

Amendola has no upside, he is what he is
He’s not going to get any better.
He doesn;t have the speed to play at the next level and he easily gets pushed around by corners.
I dont see this love affair with this undrafted player, he isn’t close to Wes welker in ability.
by Deke on Aug 30, 2008 1:37 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah so doesn't Crayton or Hurd
so your logic doesn’t make sense Deke. Neither of those players are breaking the bank in talent either, but they are the #2 and #3 WR’s on this roster.
The speed argument is tired….
Amendola is quick and fast in the slot and has excellent hands. He is somewhat raw as so was Crayton and Hurd when they first got here , but with time just like those players Amendola can be just as good.

anyone that saw Hurd run the other night knows he is not fast
and there was nothing wrong with him prior to that. He’s just not that fast. He had a LB catch him from behind…lol

by Boyzfan94 on Aug 30, 2008 1:44 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Crayton and Hurd are more polished and have the size to play receiver
Welker has quickness and speed and isn’t easily jammed at the line. Amendola doesn’t have the quickness or the speed, he has good hands and run good routes, but he isn’t physical enough.
Crayton and Hurd have the size you want in a receiver, they’re more polished, those two are good third receivers on this team. Amendola would have to make the roster as a special teams player too, and he hasn’t shown anything there. If Stanback, Austin ans Hurd weren’t injured, Amendola wouldn’t even be part of the conversation in Dallas. Jefferson has the measureables as a receiver.
by Deke on Aug 30, 2008 1:58 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
that's your opinion
If you don’t think he has quickness than you need to get your eyes checked. He has plenty of speed and quickness for what we need. Were not asking him to be our #2 or #3 WR. He can be a good slot WR with experience. He is a rookie for goodness sake….lol
Crayton is overrated and a #3 WR. He is a #2 by default that’s it. Without TO on the other side of him a HS CB would shut him down. He is a average WR with average height and speed with good hands. He definitely benefits from TO being on the other side.
This is not a debate on who is more polished. It’s a no braniner Crayton and Hurd have more experience. Your comparing a veteran to a rookie.
Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

Crayton is the good three receiver/slot receiver
How many times Have I said the cowboys need a legitimate number two speed receiver.
Amendola is the classic college player. He doesn’t have the quickness and speed for the next level, period. He’s small, plays small, and is easily pushed around by defenders. I suggest you watch the last episode of Hardknocks or the last game, you can clearly see what he is.
Amendola may make the team this week, but only because of the injuries with the three receievers on the depth chart, but he wont be here long. I’d take Jefferson over Amendola because of his size and he’s more polished as a receiver. If you want to have this love affair with Amendola, have at it. I see with my own eyes what he is and IMO from what I’ve seen with my own eyes, not what others say about him, he’s not worth a roster spot on the 53 man roster.
by Deke on Aug 30, 2008 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Crayton and Hurd are also big and strong
They are large, athletic guys with an NFL body who know how to catch the ball. It’s not Amendola’s fault – he’s a rookie, and Crayton and Hurd were not as good as they are now when they were rookies. Still, Amendola is too small, not very strong, and he doesn’t have enough speed to make up for that. If he gets stronger, maybe the balance will change, but that’s not happening this year.

Welker was decent at MIA
He caught 67 balls the year before they traded him. You gotta keep in mind that the Cam Cameron regime in Miami traded them, and right now that coaching regime is looking like one of the most foolish ever.
I agree on those saying Jefferson over Amendola. Amendola isn’t going to make us regret anything right away. After a year or two in an NFL strength program, maybe. I haven’t heard the coaches say much positive about him on Hard Knocks, and Jefferson has looked more like a NFL WR on the field. Amendola has a shot at making it through waivers to the practice squad.
If anyone we like gets cut, they’ll both be gone.

He won’t be a returner. Too small to be a gunner. Slot WR? El Gato and Crayton are better.

Well see what happens tomorrow
If Amendola get’s cut I hope we can put him on the PS at least. I think he brings a little more to the table than Jefferson right now.

Are you saying Jefferson wouldn't excel if able to play with Romo and the first string offense for four quarters ??
He looked better than “Rudy” playing with our scrubs, and I can only think his production would increase if it was Romo throwing to him.
and YES….Welker was a star on the rise in Miami, playing with lousy QB’s as you so noted…“Rudy” is no Wes Welker………………I know that much

inconsistant
He has butter finger hands and doesn’t play on special teams, like punt and kickoffs. That’s what negative about him. I like Jefferson, but just some of the things I’ve read about him he seems very inconsistant. You would think he would be further along being on the PS for the past 2 seasons.

You nailed it Grizz
Or something really close to it. I still think there will be one or 2 waiver wire pick ups.

You really think someone else's scrubs
would be able to come in and do a better job this late over Amendola or Jefferson? There will be no Randy Moss’s being cut tomorrow. Jerry was onto something when he made those comments and I don’t think he was pulling our leg. Unless it’s a elite WR were rolling with what we have.

Did I say a Randy Moss would be available?
You are being ridiculous. Of course there will be better options available after the final cuts. Randy Moss-like talent, no. Just better than Amendola and Jefferson.

no, but people are acting like
there is going to be some great WR being cut tomorrow. Whoever get’s cut wont be any better than what we alreay have is what I’m saying. They will also be behing because they don’t know the offense.

They will be behind, but they will be better players
Copper, Urban, Rector, etc. are veteran players at this point. They have the foundation in place that Amendola lacks. They can come in and learn one WR position quickly enough to help us out, especially (god forbid) if ANOTHER WR goes down.

lol.....Tom
You are being ridiculous
- You expect that to ever change ?.
Rector
Urban
Copper
former Cowboys that may be cut, know our system, and are better than “Rudy”

+1
Copper sounds like he’s going to be available. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if Dallas picks him up and cuts Jefferson and Amendola. He provides help at WR and ST.
I also think Stanback will try to make a go of it this season. Unless the team forces him onto the IR, but I’d think they want him to play this season, he still needs practice at WR.

Rector, Urban
lol….scrubs….. that’s why they were cut here. Copper isn’t going anywhere. He is one of their best special teams player in NO.

Jones went on record.......
……..saying if there would not be any WR’s added that were not familiar with the system. The reasoning was that by the time the guy got familiar enough to contribute the other guys would be back and playing, which makes perect sense. Patience is the name of the game now.

Amendola Had His Chance Thursday....
He didn’t show us much.He isn’t a good return man and isn’t a factor for the kicking teams.
Jefferson didn’tshow us much but it was more than Danny Boy.

He did well on Thursday
Most of his returns were in double digits. If he makes it great. If not, I hope we can keep him on the PS.

i think we'll keep jefferson just because of his size..
he seemed to be able to use his size to block db’s, he’s the best of the worst right now…imo.
