Very interesting........We're going with 2 healthy WR in week 1...
I think after week 1, this roster will change again…..I don’t see why we are keeping 11 OL and 7 CB’s …..there’s the suprise moves right there…As it stands right now….I’d drop Ball or Marten to add Joey Harrington on as our 3rd QB.
I sure didn’t like that Walden pick to begin with, as he was surely a major long shot to even make the roster……I’m pretty sure he’ll go quietly onto the practice squad…

Grizz
I like how you put parenthesis around “For Now”.
With Harrington and Simms out there, along with other decent names, this 53 probably won’t be the same 53 in Cleveland.

or the week after Cleveland

He is the burner people are looking for, but if you can’t crack the niner lineup, that makes me nervous..

Not Harrington
Please don’t sign Harrington. Take Simms. Take Culpepper for goodness sake, but avoid the waste that is Joey Harrington.
He wasn’t good enough to back up a rookie in Atlanta. He isn’t good enough to backup Romo, even at the 3rd QB slot.
But I don’t want to waste a roster spot on a 3rd QB. Sign Simms and cut Brad Johnson.

I don't think you read what I wrote
I said he had a bunch of good games for Atlanta. 4 games over 100 and 6 games over 85, out of 12 games played. That constitutes “a bunch”

Benched
and he was benched for Byron Leftwich, who is also still floating out there.
Harrington is horrible at reading a defenses. 3 different teams have decided he wasn’t good enough to keep on a roster. Not because of injury, but because of his actual play on the field.
He isn’t worth a roster spot.

Too little too late I guess.
I think the way the Cowboys structured these cuts is that they gave teams options to sign whatever guy.
For example, if a team signs Walden, Dallas puts George on the PS.
If Amendola is signed, they can put Jefferson on the PS.
They make other teams have to decide.
That #38 sure should wrap up!
by Aaron Novinger on Aug 30, 2008 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, and Even More Important
They hung on to an excess of corners and offensive linemen. Maybe they’re forcing other teams to play “let’s make a deal” and get some trade value for someone like Oglesby. Cleveland and New England are desperate for CB depth, so maybe they can get a sixth round pick out of him. Other teams like Miami are licking their chops for offensive linemen, so maybe they would be interested in Berger or Marten.
Then we ship them off, collect the picks, and re-sign Walden, who is not an interesting player to the teams that run the 4-3.

Didn’t overreact to the injuries at the receiver position and keep mediocre players like Amendola and Jefferson. Austin and hopefully Stanback will be back relatively soon, so there’s no make a permanent decision to solve a temporary problem.

I wonder if Dallas will go after simms. I didn’t think so because of the receiver situation

They have to be looking at a QB
BJ may be passable for now. But his social security is about to kick in and we’ll need a number two, probably next year. Better to grab a guy with some experience in the league and let him learn the offense over the course of the season, rather than drafting a rookie and hoping he can come in and not stick up the joint if needed next year.

Amendola will be on the PS where Stanback should be
I was listening to Gil Brandt tonight on Serius Radio and said Amendola has plenty of upside. He thinks he will be added to the PS along with Bartel. He thinks Amendola “flattened out” and that happens with rookies many times. He was a little surprised that Jefferson was cut.
Stanback stinks! He is not going to do anything on offense. He will be the #5 or #6 on this team. He will be lucky to on the active roster much of the season. He is a PS player….

Why would they cut him, hope he clears waivers, then put him on the active roster? That makes no sense. I’ll give you that he may be put on the PS, but no way is he going to be put on the active roster. And BTW, if he does clear waivers, that only confirms what some of us have been saying. Amendola and Bartel will be added to the PS
no question about it if they clear waivers. Jefferson I feel is done. He has been too inconsistant after two seasons on the PS. I’m a little surprised because, I feel they should’ve placed Stanback on the IR and kept either Amendola or Jefferson on the active roster. Jerry must be up to something….

Jefferson
Was only on the PS last year. I’d say there’s a good chance he’ll be put back on it again this year.

Like I said, Jerry must be counting on Amendola or Jefferson to sneak past waivers.

He liked Amendola
he said. He thought he had a good shot to make the team. He flatten out like alot of rookies do. He said, which I said on more than one occassion has plenty of upside, but needs EXPERIENCE! This is what Gil said toinight. He liked Jefferson, but knew he was inconsistant. The guy has butter fingers and we already have too many of those WRs on the roster.

C'mon guys
You’ve run everybody else off the thread in the most exciting day of the preseason. The facts are….
1.Stanbach made the team
2.Amendola did not
Those are the facts….If amendola clears waivers,we’ll probably sign him to the practice squad. He may or may not clear waivers,so argueing about it is pointless. We’ll all see how it shakes out in a few days.

keeping the best players
it seems to me they chose to keep what they considered the best players overall as a higher priority than keeping players based on perceived need for depth at certain positions. They must have thought Ball is better and CB and Marten at OT than Amendola or Jefferson are at WR and Walden is at OLB. As others have said, I think perhaps Ball and an o-lineman could be traded to fill in the depth at those spots.

Keith Davis headed back to Dallas?
Signs are pointing to former special teams captain Keith Davis returning to the Dallas Cowboys. Davis is currently in contract talks with the team and he could be signed by the end of the weekend.
If by chance they kept Ball because they like him on ST, perhaps Marten could end up being cut after all to make room for Davis.

I don't think they bring anyone in until after Cleveland
if at all. Either they want to wait until after week 1 so they can get someone to try out and fill in for a few games without having to commit to their salary the entire season, or they are confident Miles and Sam will be back relatively soon. But I think at least for Cleveland we’re going with what we’ve got and adapting the game plan with TEs and RBs who can catch the ball, of which we have plenty.
by scottmaui on Aug 30, 2008 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
btw
I could be totally wrong about this (like everything lol). they could be working on a trade for a receiver, or have someone in mind they think will be released who they want for the season. I guess my point is they can’t just grab someone to fill in for week 1. if they get someone for cleveland, they are vested for the season, so they aren’t just thinking about their needs for the opening game.
a trade may be more likely than the chances of a quality receiver being released, with the surprise guys they kept (Ball, Marten) as trade material.
by scottmaui on Aug 30, 2008 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wonder
if they’re waiting to get more info on Stanback before signing someone before week 1. If Stanback can make it through the game, I imagine we probably stick with what we have…but it’s a huge gamble. I would be more comfortable if they signed someone now and cut Marten.

penultimate in waiver claims
keep in mind that, as i understand it, we’re second to last in line for waiver claims, as it goes by regular season record. So even if some decent WR gets released, they would have to clear every other team except the Pats. and there are some other teams out there who need WRs, including the Iggles.
