Jefferson, Amendola make Cowboys practice squad; Walden claimed

The DMN blog has the info.

Turns out that both Danny Amendola and Mike Jefferson cleared waivers and have signed deals to join the Cowboys' practice squad. It's conceivable that one or both could be activated later this week to give the Cowboys some depth.

Also, there were a host of teams interested in linebacker Erik Walden. He was snatched up by the Kansas City Chiefs.

I wish we could have kept Erik Walden and got rid of James Marten. This move makes no sense to me.

Damn

My pet cat is now with the Chiefs. I know the coaching staff wasn’t thrilled with his performance, but was hoping he would have been a good project.

I'd add Allan Ball and Brad Johnson to that cut list.

I’d have cut both James Marten and Allan Ball. I just don’t know what they see in Ball. We could have had QB Matt Moore.

No one was going to claim Brad Johnson, so I would have cut him and then brought him back.

Justin Rogers made it over Erik Walden?

Huh?

Why would you cut BJ if you are going to bring him back? He would have to go on the 53 man roster, he’s not eligible for the PS. So what would the point be in cutting him?
Rogers has more value to the team than Walden at this point. He’s a good ST guy and he can play OLB and ILB, Walden was strictly a pass rusher project that showed up a bit on ST.

by WB3forMB3 on Aug 31, 2008 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It protects one extra player.

You cut Brad Johnson and protect an injured player on the 53-man roster (say, Stanback or Hurd), then bring Brad Johnson back and put that player on injured reserve,

For example, the Cowboys could have cut BJ and kept Erik Walden, then put Hurd on IR and brought BJ back to the 53-man roster. Walden was claimed, but no one would have claimed BJ. It was a way to keep Walden.

I could be wrong about this, though.

IR means gone for the year

Stanback is the only guy you might consider putting on IR, and interestingly may be the only other receiver available for week 1. But if they were going to go the IR route they could have just put him on IR outright, no need to cut anyone first.

Plus, what if

you cut BJ and someone offered him a better deal? Might be unlikely but that is one hell of a risk to take with your #2 QB.

I thought it was the Cowboys practice squad

Which he didn’t make. But there is hope for Robertson :)

hmmm

because I don’t think they suck?? I think they are better fit then BJ. Bollinger is the weakest of the 3, but he is younger then Brad..

None of them will play anyhow

If we’re forced to use a backup QB….then we’re screwed anyways.

for a 4 game stretch or less Simms could easily go 2 and 2

OK....I'll give you that

and I agree.
I Romo is out…meaning lost for the season….we’re done for. Hell B Johnson could prolly go .500 for a month for us. My point was If we’re counting on anybody other than Tony Romo to get us to the super bowl…..It ain’t happening!

yeah

Brad can keep us in the playoff hunt for a few games if needed, but he’s not the one who will take us all the way. But since he’s the only one who’s been all the way, he’s also valuable just to have on the sidelines and in Tony’s ear. Maybe he’s Obi Wan Kenobi to young Tony’s Luke?

i'll admit

Brad did a good job behind the 1st team oline, he just needs his favorite target Miles Austin back..

i agree

walden is going to be a great ST and maybe grow into a good lb, marten is a project that most likely would not have been claimed.

I didn't get this move at all

You need four good pass rushers in a 3-4 defense, plays special teams and you spent a sixth round pick on a guy that clearly has a quick first step and has showed he’s tough by playing all of last year with turf toe. And now its reported that many teams showed interest in Welden, and we kept a backup offensive linemen who we’ve moved a half a dozen times from tackle to guard, slow out of his stance and after we traded for a starter this week. That makes no sense to me.

I was hoping we’d go with nine instead of ten offensive linemen so we could get another option as backup QB, and not eleven.

Hopefully Spencer will be back by the 2nd week

It sucks that the team didn’t get the initial diagnosis correct, otherwise he could have had the scope a couple weeks earlier and been ready to go against the Browns.

Marten

The only thing I can think of is that we may try to ship him off to Sparano for peanuts. Otherwise he seems next on the cut list, despite being a 3rd rounder.

George, Coleman, Crosslin, Hannah, Dixon on PS
Practice squad filled — almost

The Cowboys have signed seven players to the eight-man practice squad: WR Mike Jefferson, WR Danny Amendola, LB Tearrius George, RB Alonzo Coleman, FB Julius Crosslin, TE Rodney Hannah and DE Marcus Dixon.

The one last spot is expected to be filled by QB Richard Bartel, who cleared waivers but got some interest from Miami. Here’s the problem for the Grapevine product. He may only be here for one week. The Cowboys are looking to add a third quarterback to their 53-man roster with NFL experience and they are targeting Vikings-ex Brooks Bollinger, who was part of the final cuts.

How does the practice squad work?

Calvin Watkins at DMN blog says “Mike Jefferson and Danny Amendola, who were signed to the practice squad today, should be active for Sunday’s game at Cleveland, unless the team signs another wide receiver.”

How does this work? Can a PS guy be activated just for a game or two, and then sent back to the PS once Hurd is back? Would a space on the roster have to be cleared to activate them?

by scottmaui on Aug 31, 2008 5:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, No & Yes

You have to clear someone off of the 53 to make room. And to put them back on the PS you have to cut them again and let them clear waivers again.

by WB3forMB3 on Aug 31, 2008 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

this is exactly what I was talking about

Both would be added to the PS and one or both will be on the active roster depending on Stanback’s return. If he is placed on the IR then both will probably be activated. I don’t see Hurd coming back for 4 to 6 weeks and Austin until the end of Sept. That means both of these players could be on the active roster for awhile or all season.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

he isn't going to be placed on IR

give that up already

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Sep 1, 2008 8:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah,

I agree. Why get rid of a guy who looks like a pretty good special teamer (not exactly a strength of our team) who has pass rush skills so you can keep a guy like Marten who hasn’t show any skills whatsoever. The only thing I can think of is that tackles are in short supply right now in the league and we’re hoping to make a deal.
