Here's our new #2 QB
It's been announced that Brett "Drama Queen" Farve has been traded to the New York Jets......To make room for Brett and his 12 million dollar salary, There will be an expected release of one other existing QB's......Chad Pennington / at 6 million is more than likely gone from the Jets come thursday morning......
Jerry must do everything in his power to aquire this guy as insurance for our dynasty run of the next several years ...I am sure we can get him fairly cheap (2.5-3 million per) to back up Romo......I'd sure sleep a whole lot better with Pennington over Brad..........thoughts ?

Pennington has no arm
He’s no better than Brad Johnson

Pennington is a younger, weaker Brad Johnson with no background in winning, At least Johnson has a ring, Pass, of wait a minute. nevermind PASS

I'm starting a rumor that
the new backup is Deke. Even without seeing his out pattern throws I’m confident he’ll have more on it than Pennington…

weird how Pennington has career completion averages, and better int rates than Romo, yet people tend to hone in on his perceived lack of arm strength...
to put up numbers in the Meadowlands with the cast of mediocre players he’s been given his whole career tells me more than the media’s version of his skillset…..
btw…..there is not one pass play call in Garretts playbook, or any other coordinators playbook that’s designed to be thrown over 30 yards besides the fabeled “Hail Mary” play…....In fact, Garrett himself was perceived to have a rag arm yet he was just fine for over 12 years of backup relief.
we are looking for a game manager to supply adequate replacement abilities if called apon…..not Farve like sling shots 40 yards down…..
oh well….....continue to shoot down every prospective #2 QB that opens up and your going to be left with some 40 year old rag arm to pin our hopes on….....

pin our hopes on????
what are you smokin’ Boyz, our hopes are strictly with Romo. No other qb will take us to the SB or win it.
Johnson can give a few wins if Romo goes down for a few games but if anything seriously happened to him, there is no way Pennington or any other backup qb out there will take us to the SB, thats just ludicrous.

yeah really
Pennington is tired like his arm. This is not even worth a discussion.
I’m sure if Pennington worked exclusively at WR in traning camp he could be as good as TO…. :)

So..in essense your saying it's only because of Romo that we're one of the top offenses in the league??
No other qb will take us to the SB or win it.-Terry
What are you smoking ?? ....Brad Johnson, Tent Dilfer, Mark Rypien, heck Eli Manning…........ALL have Super Bowl rings…..ALL have career passing rating lower than Chad Pennington…....get a grip with your Romosexual tendencies…......there is WAY more to this offense than Tony Romo (I love Romo as much as anyone)....but…....TO, Crayton, MBIII, Felix Jones, Witten, 3 All Pro Offensive linemen have alot to do with making Tony doing well…..NO ??......Maybe our top 3 Defense also attributes to an outstanding offense ?..NO ???
Don’t give me this crap that Romo, and only Romo can win with these player to work with…...THE FACT IS….with Brad Johnson….NO chance…...with any half way decent QB we get to the playoffs at least…..either way…..i’m tired of debating this…..some guys don’t realize just how Brad is…hopefully he shows his true colors saturday night and Jerry acts swiftly….cuz damn well be sure Jerry knows we are one hit to Romo’s knee of wasting a season or two…...
*note: this whole post was written under the notion of discussion as i’m not exactly a Chad Pennington fan…...but anyone who sez he isn’t an upgrade over Brad Johnson hasn’t seen him play, and is merely going on the perception of him having limited arm strength…yet has brought the lowly Jets to several playoff appearances, and is certainly a QB with intelligence and ability to manage a game…...once again….there is not one play call in Garretts playbook that calls for the QB to throw the ball 50 yards downfield…..so this arm strength issue holds no weight with me….
Either way….It’s been discussed he’s going to Miami…...maybe the geinius Bill Parcells knows something you guys don’t ?????? ....lol

2 things
First, I agree that we need Romo to be a great team. He is an elite QB in our passing offensive system. But I do agree that we can win without Romo for a game or two. This team is stacked and a workmanlike job can win. I think the running game is going to be huge this year, and all we need is smart QB play.
Second, the reason I don’t want Pennington is that he’s the SAME QB AS JOHNSON. Maybe a little younger, but definitely with 2 fewer years of studying this offense. He has a noodle arm, period. I have watched many putrid Jets games when it’s all that’s on here, and Pennington can’t throw it beyond 20 yards any better than Johnson (and if he can, it’s irrelevant because neither of them have the arm strength to throw a hard pass that far). There is no significant upgrade there, and it’s irrelevant anyway because Minnesota or Miami are going to sign him and start him.
P.S.:

again....makes no sense....
If he sucks, and wouldn’t be an upgrade at back up here in Dallas, over a 40 year old zombie named Brad Johnson…..
WHY in the world would a team that is only a quality pro bowler type QB away from being Super Bowl contenders, as the Vikings are, be interested in a guy that supposedly sucks and can’t throw 20 yards ???????????
I look forward to these replies….......

Well
WHY in the world would a team that is only a quality pro bowler type QB away from being Super Bowl contenders, as the Vikings are, be interested in a guy that supposedly sucks and can’t throw 20 yards ???????
First of all, because he’s better than their starting QB. And second of all, I didn’t say that Pennington sucks. I said he had a noodle arm (he does) and he’s very smart (he is). I didn’t mention that he is accurate, but he is – typically that is the skill of the “smart” QB. My point is just that he’s similar to BJ and BJ has 2 years of experience in this offense vs. 0 for Pennington. That, to me, makes him not worth the trouble. It’s not that I hate Pennington or love BJ. It’s just not a significant upgrade and would be quite expensive cap-wise.
And, by the way, I am all in favor of bringing in a younger and more physically gifted QB than Johnson (such as Quinn Gray, before he was signed by Indy). Pennington doesn’t really fit that bill. Neither does some other washed up re-tread like Culpepper. I’d prefer someone young, eager to learn, and ready to step in on occasion, not some veteran gunning for a starting job.
It’s moot. He’s going to start (he is better than several teams’ starters), not go to a contender to hold a clipboard.
by grapejoos on Aug 8, 2008 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
smart
but threw 10td’s and 9 in’ts and won one game as the starter last season.
I would rather have TJackson if I am the Vikings..
Pennington can hold a clipboard and teach.

Fair enough
I am pretty hard on Jackson, admittedly. I just think he makes too many errors for that team – they need someone who will avoid turnovers.
But yeah, it’s worth noting that Pennington lost his job to Kellen Clemens last year, and for good reason.

By the way
Pennington is reportedly signing a 2 year, 11.5 million contract with Miami, so he wasn’t going to fit under our cap here, anyway.

Pennington isn't an upgrade for this role
I’ve watched the guy play, he lacks arm strength. That’s why NYJ made this trade. The guy is a smart QB and good game-manager (he was a Rhodes Scholar), but he’s basically exactly the same as Brad Johnson, who has been with the Boys over a year and knows the system. Pennington isn’t the kind of guy that could come in and save the season with a serious Romo injury any more than BJ is. And, spoiler alert, the Boys aren’t going to bring in a guy like that, right or wrong.

I bet he’d be good in a backup role since he can’t stay healthy starting every game.

List of names
Here a list of possible cuts in the coming weeks I think we should keep an eye and ear open for as possible #2 or #3 guys. These guys all have at least a little game experience. I think realistically we would have to keep BJ for a while even if we picked up one of these guys to give them time to learn at least some of the offense.
Brooks Bollinger – Minnesota
Brock Berlin – St. Louis
Bruce Gradkowski – St. Louis
Luke McCown – Tampa Bay
Chris Simms – Tampa Bay (may not want to be a backup with no shot at starting)
Joey Harrington – Atlanta
Chad Pennington – New York Jets (may not want to be a backup with no shot at starting)

Brooks Bollinger – Minnesota
uh….who?
Brock Berlin – St. Louis
wow, no
Bruce Gradkowski – St. Louis
again…no….well maybe
Luke McCown – Tampa Bay
Which one is he….maybe
Chris Simms – Tampa Bay (may not want to be a backup with no shot at starting)
he’s left handed
Joey Harrington – Atlanta
go wash your mouth out with soap!
Chad Pennington – New York Jets (may not want to be a backup with no shot at starting)
I could deal with Chad, he’d do just fine holding kick, or a clipboard
This is a problem I can deal with….even if we screw it up, it will most likely have no effect.

That whole arm strentgh thing is a myth.
ESPN threw up a stat once that Pennington is actually one of the most accurate in the league when attempting 20+ yard targets. Now that doesnt mean that he can stick an 18 yard out on the left hash from the right side of the field. But dudes arm is better than Brad’s.
That doesnt mean its great, but its better than Brad’s

why is Pennington better than Johnson?
because he’s younger?? To me, thats the only thing Pennington has over Brad. They both have bad arms but at least Johnson’s wasn’t surgically reconstructed.
They’re both smart QBs, but Brad is smarter and has SB experience.
If we could get Pennigton cheap, a million or less, I’d do it, but if he asks for more, forget about it, lets go with Brad.

Pennington
I have watched Pennington sice he came to the J.E.T.S. Jets, Jets, Jets, and I like him and he is a hard worker who will give you 100% every play game or practice, however he is no where near the same as before the shoulder injuries… if you watch him most of his passes now a days are slow lofty throws no more than 20 yards up field, he was promissing and pretty darn good back in the day.. he offers NOTHING over Brad Johnson, and honestly IF he goes to Minnesota he does not make them better, if he goes to Chicago he makes them better, but that is not saying much…..
by stephena on Aug 7, 2008 8:00 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That's what I thought too
Pennington was on his way to doing great things before the injuries. He’s still a decent QB, but if he was that great, would the Jets have traded for Farve? Plus Pennington couldn’t beat out Clemons for the starting spot. That should tell us something about his skills. At least Brad knows the play book inside and out. I think he’s a younger version of Brad, smart and accurate, but no zip on those intermediate to long passes.

I guess
If you are going to get rid of your 3 time league MVP, first ballot hall of fame QB, then a potential 1st rounder is pretty good considering he’s 38. And now they have 3 QBs with a combined NFL start total of 0. I got a feeling Ted Thompson is not long for his job. But at least he got an extra 1st or 2nd round pick on his way out the door.

The only 'win' the Pack got
was they did NOT back down….
they made a statement to their players and other players in the NFL that even if you are Brett Favre you don’t, won’t, and can’t dictate where you will play while you are under contract….
To be a better team now, the Pack should have taken Brett back. To try to make for a future they had to not let him back. To make a statement they had to trade him the way they did…. out of the division, out of the conference, and probalby out of spite, to a team that is not really that close to making any noise…
I bet with Brett the Jest are a .500 team, without him they win 4 games, maybe..

The Jets are not that bad.
They are one year removed from the playoffs, suggesting that their coaching staff did a helluva job with that talent.
If Gholsten turns out, and Jenkins is healthy along with Calvin Pace, the defense looks good.
Jerricho Cotchery really has some impressive talent—watch out for him in FF. And LB David Harris put up some Patrick Willis like #s towards the last half of last year.

Pennington would be a good #2
The quarterback position on this team is very important, but the qb doesn’t have to carry the team like it does on most. Over a dozen NFL quarterbacks could get this roster to the Super Bowl. If something happens to Romo as it stands now, we’re done. Get a legitimate backup, and we can still represent the NFC in Tampa. Our offensive line, running backs, and receivers are some of the best, if not the best, in football. Pennington has the experience, the accuracy, and ample arm strength to pick it up if the unthinkable happened. In my opinion, we should go after him.
by rrb on Aug 7, 2008 11:56 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I strongly disagree
Romo and T.O. are the straws that stirs the Cowboys drink, anything seriously happens to them, we’re finished, end of story.
To say there are over dozen QBs in the league that could get us to the SB is simply a ridiculous statement There are only about 8-10 QBs who could adequately fill in for Romo and they are all quality starters who obviously wouldn’t be available as backups to Tony.
A backup QB will not get us to the SB, its as simple as that, not going to happen. In todays NFL, average QBs are not capable of winning SBs.
News flash, Pennington doesn’t have ample arm strength nor is he a quality NFL starter because if he was, Jets wouldn’t have traded for Favre.
