Bennet Misses Practice
I'm surprised there isn't discussion of this already. He was excused from Thursday's practice for "personal reasons" (after missing part of Wednesday's practice with "sore feet"). We've seen his lackadaisical attitude on Hard Knocks but unless a parent died or something, there is no excuse for a rookie to miss the tuneup for his first preseason game. I just hope his problems aren't of the Quincy Carter variety. I thought it was a mistake in April when we passed up several potential #2 receivers for a #3 tight end (and then traded our reliable #2 TE for nothing). But this is bigger than a draft mistake. I don't want his attitude affecting the rest of the team. Maybe we should use him as this year's Curvin Richards.

Dude.....did you even read the article about this situation ???
first off…...He is already listed as the #2 TE on the initial depth chart released today in camp.,....your one of those believe everything you hear and read….huh ?...
wanna by some prime property with water views in south florida ??
Wade Phillips came right out and said Fasano offered NO speacial teams contributions what so ever last year…and that is the reason he was shipped out for a late pick and a bag of fritos….
while i’m at it…I might as well ask about these potential #2 WR’s you are refering to that we passed up with out pick in round 2 ,
can you give me a few names please??????

umm......actually..NO....he isn't...
according to DC.com…..a quote taken from an article written today,
Rookie Bennett Misses Practice
On the same day he was listed as the first backup to tight end Jason Witten, rookie Martellus Bennett was excused from practice for personal reasons. Phillips said after practice that Bennett wasn’t injured and would make the trip to San Diego.

I think you misunderstood the article
I think the staff writer is talking about the upcoming game in San Diego and Bennett is the second in the depth chart for the game against the chargers to get him reps against first and second teamers. bennett needs alot of reps. They know what Curtis brings. The way Bennett is getting ripped every practice for his work ethic and drops and failure to grasp the plays, you really dont buy he’s second on the depth chart for the seaosn as of now do you, come on Boyz.!!
i didn't misunderstand..that's the official up to date depth chart that i believe every team must submit,,,,i'm looking into it, but it wasn't just for this game...
the chart certainly will/may change next week or whatever…but that’s the list…........I realize Bennett hasnt exactly lit up the camp thus far…but they do have high hopes….as do i…......in fact…while i’m writing this…i can give two craps what the depth chart sez on August 7th anyhow…....just stating the facts that were reported is all.

no matter what is says
T Curtis should be #2
"If you see me up in the mountains with a lion, I ain't lyin
don't help me, help the mountain lion"
I have some
Early Doucet, Mario Manningham, and Andre Caldwell all with proven track records for production in college..
So there were options..
Not sold on Bennett, but he has time. Only reason he is a discussion is because the season hasn’t started.
We have plenty of other rookies who contribute this season. Can’t be 100%
"If you see me up in the mountains with a lion, I ain't lyin
don't help me, help the mountain lion"
Doucet-too slow, Manningham-trouble makin' dope head, Caldwell- fragile as a china doll.....
but i respect the selections…..none i would have made in round 2….well..maybe Caldwell…...but that would of been a reach in my book…..I wanted William Franklin in round 4…..which we could have landed…..remember him…as i predict he’ll be a pro bowler with the next 3- 5 years….and one of the best of this entire draft class.

players
doucet no slower Boldin, Manningham similiar issues as Chad Johnson, and Caldwell speed to burn, but a little nicked. That is why he wasn’t drafted earlier in the 2nd round becuase of the injuries, but a quality pick late in the 2nd..
As for Manningham and his weed issues, a lot more player indulge in the canibus then you realize, but I do believe his attuitude was also a turn-off to teams.
"If you see me up in the mountains with a lion, I ain't lyin

those WRs are garbage and certainly
not worthy of a 2nd rd pick. Bennett has much more upside.
In Romo we Trust
Terry
Where do you get they are garbage from? Stats? Just your own eye ball opionon on guys who yet to set foot on football field in regular season? All of those guys performed at high level in big time College Conference.
Seriously how much upside does Benett really have backiing up Witten? 30 catches ? 400 yds?
How can you say not worthy of pick and their 1st season hasn’t played out.. Do we really need to get in to all of the lower round players and FA’s that have proven they should have been drafted higher?
"If you see me up in the mountains with a lion, I ain't lyin
don't help me, help the mountain lion"
If they were so good, then why weren't they
drafted in the first rd?? We’ll see what these guys do in the pros, I say not much.
Also Bennett is a project player, we drafted him knowing we weren’t going to get much production for a while, but thats okay, as a TE, his ability is off the charts, unlike Manningham, Doucet or Caldwell.
In Romo we Trust
Your hilarious
Why wasn’t Bennett taken in the 1st round?
Manningham and Caldwell both have the physical tools to excel in the NFL. Bennett isn’t fast for TE, nor a great route runner, doesn’t have excellent hands, what makes him off the charts? His size? Not sold.
Doucet isn’t a physical freak, but he gets opens, makes big plays, and performed at high level vs quality comp.
"If you see me up in the mountains with a lion, I ain't lyin
don't help me, help the mountain lion"
Its because Texas A&M didn't pass the ball
if he would have played in a pro style passing attack like those receivers you think are good, he probably would have been.
Also, you just described Crayton and Hurd when describing Doucet so why waste a high pick on a player we already have.
In Romo we Trust
Hurd
He had a 51 yd TD catch in week 1 2007. He’s had a few other catches over 20 yds.

seems to be around on 3rd downs too. That’s where he’ll continue to make his mark.

So has Amani Toomer,
but I don’t think anyone is going to call him a big play receiver. The point is, there’s no way you can expect Hurd to consistently stretch the field, or make huge runs after the catch. That’s not his game. Don’t take this as a Hurd bash. I’d a big Hurd fan, and, despite the first preseason game, I think our team is much better suited with him as the third receiver. I’m just saying that he doesn’t bring that big play ability where we bring him in the game because if he gets his hands on the ball, he can score i.e. Stanback or AJ.

Personally, I would have preferred we traded up and drafted hardy, I think he is stud, and we don’t have WR on the roster like him..

I didn't understand the Bennett pick in the second round either
But thus far from what I’ve read and heard from camp, I’m not at all impressed with this kid, I hope this doesn’t turn out to be another wasted second round pick. He needs to learn to act and be a professional and stop acting like an kid, with his work ethic, ack of preparation and comments. I dont want to speculate on why Bennett missed practice, the club said it was for a personal reason, I just hope everything is alright, if its a family matter.
As far a fasano goes, the knock on him was that he didn’t grasp the offensive playbook.
I actually didn't..
..like the Fasano pick more than the Bennett pick..the MAIN reason he was drafted was b/c he was a parcells GUY..I hated when BP did this (ie Fasano, Carpenter, Ferguson)

I wanted Manny Lawson
"If you see me up in the mountains with a lion, I ain't lyin

Lawson is a weakside linebacker
the same position as Ware played pius we needed a backup plan to Ellis who we didn’t know could play the strong side outside linebacker. lawson isn’t exactly tearing things up in SF by a long shot.
I had him pegged as Ellis's replacement
I am happy with Spencer, so it is no biggie.
I just thought he was a perfect fit, great ability, and measurables..
The poor guy suffered an injury that will set his career back, there is no way to know if he would have been a cowboy, if he could have developed.. That niner team is not bueno..

actually Deke......again posted in the same article today over at DallasCowboys.com
He was shipped out of here because he offered NO speacial teams ability what so ever, and if your going to be a back up here…you better damn well make a mark on special teams…Fasano obviously didn’t….Wade had some pretty direct words pointing towards Fasano’s lack of special teams ability, quoted here:
Not So Special<——a direct shot at Fasano for not producing anything on special teams!!!!!!!!If there was any question as to why tight end Anthony Fasano and running back Tyson Thompson are no longer Cowboys – Fasano was traded to the Miami Dolphins on the eve of the draft and Thompson wasn’t given a restricted tender - Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips offered one explanation: They didn’t produce on special teams.
Phillips said he expects more production from players in Fasano’s and Thompson’s positions than he had last year.“Our backup running backs, especially our third running back, is going to have to be a better special teams player than we had before,” Phillips said. “We’ve kind of identified those things.
Our tight ends need to help us on special teams. (Tony) Curtis did last year, but he was the only one.”

come boyz, you're slipping
Wade said that was one of the reasons, I’ve read and heard Spagnola and others after the trade say Fasano was traded because cowboys insiders(Garrett) didn’t like his development as a second round pick and his failure to grasp the playbook as the main reason why he was shipped out of town. The second tightend on your roster who is a big part of the two tighend system you’re trying to impliment doesn’t get trade because he cant contribute on special teams, thats alot of who shot jogn from wade Phillips, that’s the third tghtend on your 53 man roster. That’s almost as bad as someone saying the cowboys wont cut Witten becasue he’s too valuable on special teams….no body would care if Witten played special teams…
+1
Garrett wanted a more vertical TE in his offense. That wasn’t Fasano. Bennett is more athletic and faster than Fasano. Were learning now Fasano and Thompson weren’t cutting it on special teams which played a role in both there exits from this team . I like Bennett’s upside, but he won’t be the #2 TE on this team. He has alot to learn and from what I’ve been reading he is not doing so hot. I don’t care what the depth charts on DC.com, Cowboys.com, etc., says because, on opening day Curtis will be the #2 TE on this team. Bennett is not ready for that role just yet.
Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!
this from the Cowboys.com site
Bennett is listed as second tight end on the unofficial depth chart for Saturday’s preseason opener.
He’s listed as the #2 for the preseason game it sounds like only. Curits may be the #1 because it’s possible Witten may not play.
Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!
alright guy....somewhere there i think you got me....but i just say it like i read it...and post quotes from the HEAD Coach
if he was slipping in developement, and couldn’t grasp the playbook as well….sure…..that would get you out on the first bus too….......typical Parcells pick…as I see it…......

Doggin' the wrong dude
That “typical Parcells pick” stuff is garbage. I would rather have a typical Parcells pick that a typical Jerry Jones pick any day. Kavika Pittman anyone? Shante Carver? Stepfret Williams? Ebenezer Ekuban? Antonio Bryant? Of course I would rather have a Jimmy Johnson pick over anyone else’s pick… period (caveat: Dallas era not Miami).
Hmmm Considering
Parcells wanted wanted Spears over Ware, became so obsessed with punt returners he wasted a fourth round pick on Skyler Green, kept falling in love with big-school bust offensive linemen (Al Johnson, Jacob Rogers, Stephen Peterman), and had such a bad New Jersey bias he wasted a second round pick on Tony “Hands of Stone” Fasano, I’ll take the more recent version of Jerry Jones any day.
Lets go alittle easy with the bust factor
Peterman in staring in Detroit, Johnson is starting in San Diego. Rogers didn’t work out, aways injured, The draft is a crap shoot, it the abiity to do a decent job acquiring lots of picks to increase your chances of hitting on players. For every first three round players that didn’t workout, people seem to forget the hits from the fourth round on. I’ll take Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland running the drafts over Jerry anyday, I wouldn’t compare Jerry’s record of drafting to anyone else,, he’s in a class all by himself, at the bottom, just look at his draft picks from 94 to 02, when Jimmy was gone until Bill arrived, its not pretty at all.
Peterman is Starting
In Detroit, but Johnson plays for Arizona, not San Diego. Big difference between playing for a bad offensive line and one of the best in the league. So if we cast off a player and he on an unproductive line, albeit starting, I’m comfortable calling them busts.
It’s axiomatic Jerry drafted poorly after Jimmy Johnson left, but he’s improved dramatically since ‘01. ‘02 was a transition year, but we still got Gurode out of that draft, and he’s one of the best centers in the league. We also got three good years from Roy Williams, which is better production than any of the offensively linemen picked when Parcells was here.
Thats right, Arizona
How did I forget that, most cowboy cast offs end up there…ofcource the new destination is now Miami. Just because a player doesn’t workout here but does somewhere else, then you cant really call that player a bust imo.
Petermen would of been starting if he wasn't injured during the KC preseason game, Al Johnson suffered a knee injury and needed Micro fracture surgery. Once a player is injured, especially a young linemen, you really limited your chances of making it with that team, teams have to find others to take over those spots, a year off due to injury is a killer for injured linemen. Mark Columbo is an example where we got lucky because we gave him a chance to rebuild his career after a serious injury, so it works both ways.
Ryan Leaf is a bust if one is so inclined to use that term because they are considered top ten blue chip players. not players that continue to work and start for other teams in the NFL for a long period of time. I also think its ridiculous that people want to label first and second year drafted players busts. In a league where it takes most players three years to develop into a starter or a role player, and that’s if they’re even given a chance to play, ala Bobby carpenter, to call them busts is a word I choose not to use for any player, some work out, some dont, it’s an inexact science If a player doesn’t work out, then I like to say, its time to upgrade, ala Roy Williams, that position because to even get drafted into this exclusive league, you’ve have to have some level of talent and abillity..
Didn't Jimmy bring in Zach and Jason Taylor

Homework
I have to belive that as a second round pick Jerry and company did their homework, and probably would not have taken him in the second round IF he had any character (non criminal type) / work ethic issues.
For every player, there is usually a little blub on their ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ was work etich or attitude one of Bennett’s ‘cons’?
I Don't Quite Understand
The near hysteria around Bennett. I saw the first 25 minutes of Hard Knocks on youtube and didn’t see anything that would lead me to believe he’s lazy or unmotivated.
Why’s everyone getting so stressed out about him?
I don't know either.
Of course the coaches are going to harp on a guy they think has potential. Obviously, both Garrett bros think highly of him. Cowboys fans are just very critical right now of who the team is trying to develop.
Development of younger boom-or-bust players is a luxury Dallas has right now because of all the vets who continue to work towards excellence.

it's the round where most all top TE's are selected....
there was a flurry of TE selects from the end of rd 1 to the mid 3rd…...TE’s are in vogue now a days with the production from the Wittens, Gates, Clarks, Gonzos, Shokeys, Winslows, Davis…etc….
I am very pleased we used a top pick on a 2nd TE in retrospect….TE’s offer instant usability (blocking, special teams)..WR need much more developement, and usually don’t add much to special teams unless they’re return guys as well…..we’re a 2 TE system team…..and I like it that way….

I Can't Speak
For his critics (cuz I’m not one of them), but most people seemed to be upset that we chose Bennett over one of the Mel Kiper WRs. Fact is, it was a thin class of wideouts this year, and Dallas was wise to pass on them. We drafted for need many years, always looking for the next Novacek (Bjorson, Lafluer) or Haley (Carver, Pittman, Ekuban, ad nauseum). We might as well have just given those picks away. The organization believed none of the WRs this year were any better than the young guys on the team. So do you draft a Desean Jackson in the second round, and end up cutting him because he’s no better than Miles Austin? (BTW, the Eagles have terrible wide receivers, and Jackson is now sixth on the depth chart. Here, he’d be fighting Amendola for a spot).
This year, we were drafting for value, and while it looked shocking at first, I like the Bennett selection for the long term. Tight end is a high wearout position, so what do you do in a couple of years if Witten goes down? If Bennett can develop in the short term, he can really add to the offense, especially in goal line situations. He’s an excellent power blocker, and also has the height and athleticism to make a coverage nightmare. If he learns to pass block, run good routes and hang on to the ball, he can be a fantastic player, putting tremendous pressure on defenses in the two tight end set.
He’s raw and immature, but I’ll take him over any receiver selected in the draft this year.
not me
There a couple of WR’s I like better then Bennett. Only time will tell if we made the right choice, I am not ready to call him bust for another couple of years.
I am glad this gives my boy Tony “TD” Curtis time to shine..

TEs certainly are more versatile and can be developed as pass-catchers while they can be used for short yardage and ST situations.

Bennett
I’d cut him a little slack. He’s going from a Aggies play book the size of a pamphlet to a Cowboys play book the size of a phonebook. In Garrett’s offense, the TE position is second in difficulty only to the QB position. Bennett is probably going to struggle a little at first, but his upside is much higher than Fasano’s.

Revisiting the Bennett Selection
Ok… here’s where Jerry needs a lesson in Risk vs. Reward.
1. Bennet was pretty good in college – he led a non-passing team in receptions. He didn’t, however, show the talent or production of a Kellen Winslow or a Vernon Davis… i.e. he was not a 1st round talent.
2. Several Wide Receivers in the draft were considered 1st round talents but dropped into the late 2nd round because of questions regarding their work ethic and character.
3. #2 or even #3 WR is much more important to a championship team than #2 TE. A great #2 TE makes very little difference while a great #2 WR can be a productive receiver and force teams not to roll coverage toward TO and/or Witten. That said, Dallas already had a decent #2 TE in Tony Curtis – so not much to gain going from good to great at that position.
Put it all together and you get a 2nd round pick being spent for a high-risk/minimal-reward player as opposed to taking a high-risk/high-reward player like one of the receivers. They have the same rap as Bennet for work ethic and character (thus, roughly equal chance of being busts). But the consensus was they all had more talent and production than Bennet at a position of much greater need for the Cowboys.
