Cowboys win a wild one over the Eagles, 41-37

That was one of the most entertaining games I've ever watched. If we had lost, I would have been comatose, but since we won it I can't stop grinning. The Cowboys win a barn-burner 41-37. The Eagles are a worthy adversary, they played a great game. Donovan McNabb was spectacular.

But it wasn't enough to take the Boys on this night. Now, tomorrow, I can get into all the mistakes we made and how we need to clean up our act. But for tonight....just celebrate, baby!

BTW, try to take it easy on my friend JasonB's Eagles blog, win with class and represent BTB with class.

Let the celebration thread begin. Woo hoo!

Happy happy - now win next week

We are still a long way to February. This does feel good. When we win in Philly it will feel even better.

Romo is always humble

He knows his mistakes could have cost them the game and he admitted it, while giving praise “to the guys”. It’s never about him.

Game of the year

It was entertaining – no one can deny that! And while it wasn’t the boring, dominating Cowboy win I was hoping for, how can anyone complain about 2-0? Great evening all around.

These games are my season superbowls

I hate the Eagles with a passion. I can’t handle losing to them. The ’Boys had me worried through most of the game, but when we needed a score, we got it and when we needed a stop we got it. Thank you Cowboys for making my week. Thank you for winning this game for me.

Now, on the one hand, we can say that despite the turnovers, the penalties, the bone-headed plays, we STILL beat a good team. That says soemthing.

On the other hand, we HAVE to clean up this penalty situation, because it will—sooner or later—cost us a game.

I saw FeJo's runback for the first time

Stanback was faster than everyone on the field. I would like to see some deep passes thrown his way.

Couldn't ask for a more entertaining game

I cant wait to see the ratings for this game, have to be through the roof

But we’ve got plenty of problems to work on. We’re playing with fire with all these penalties

I could

The game would have been more entertaining without Jawbreaker and Kornhole broadcasting. I actually went looking for the Spanish language audio.

ESPN needs

Besides getting new guys in the booth, they need sideline reporters. Witten injury, no update, Roy Williams, broken arm, no update.

I never heard one thing on Witten having his shoulder dislocated or Roys Williams breaking his arm except on the open thread. The guys in the booth were too busy yucking it up.

that was a horrible throw

poor mechanics, side slinging throw. I dont know what he was doing with the fumble, TD in the endzone.. Ofcouce our kick return team, was that Stanback back there letting the ball hit the turf, then a fase start, then a fumble in the endzone for a TD, cant get any worse than that.. three horrible back to back to back plays

by Deke on Sep 15, 2008 11:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is it me, or does our team have problems enjoying prosperity against the top teams?

I mean, take away the Romo fumble for an Eagle TD and the errant throw for an INT to Samuel, and we should win this game almost like last week.

The miscues.

Those two turnovers by Romo I just mentioned.
All them damn penalties.
Numerous missed tackles by our defense.

Don’t get me wrong… I’m elated and relieved with the win. However, we’ve got to put teams away — especially the good ones — when we have a lead.

To Romo’s credit, he settled down and took what the defense gave him with the underneath patterns, the swing passes in the flats, and the occasional pass down the seam in the middle of the field.

I also like that Red Ball utilized MB3 a lot more in the second half. That also improved our Time of Possession, which kept the “D” a little more fresher. That helped the defense improve in the second half, as well… holding the Eagles to a mere 7 combined points in both the 3rd and 4th quarter.

The coaching deserves credit after halftime. It was obvious that adjustments were made, and the three doofuses on ESPN’s MNF crew were too busy trying to be witty that they totally didn’t point that out. And their post-game was equally bad.

Yes, I present to you, ESPN’s Stupid Seven:
Mike Tirico
Ron Jawarski
Tony Kornheiser
Suzy Kolber
Stuart Scott
Emmitt Smith (as a TV analyst ONLY)
Steve Young

I'm sorry...

…but Kolber asks some stupid questions sometimes, which includes close-ended ones that can be answered with yes or no or short answers. I was a journalism major, and I learned that in my Introduction to TV Journalism course in college.

Regarding Young. He’s all right. However, he also tends to drift off into tangents when answering an analytical question.

Honestly, I believe that ESPN hires based on how good the ex-NFL player was on the field — as opposed to their on-air talents.

As annoying as Sean Salisbury was to me — and I’m glad he got the axe — he was a very good NFL on-air analyst. And he’s one of the few ex-players who sucked, but consistently performed well on camera.

Observations

Offense had a few miscues
I can kinda live with Romo’s bonehead plays because that mentality is the thing that allows him to make the big plays he makes. Gotta take the good with the bad
Defense had WAY to many facemasks, called and uncalled. Tackle. Tackle. Tackle. Im tired of seeing these guys trying to blow guys up instead of TACKLING!! And he have GOT to start generating some turnovers. The Westbrook penalty doesnt count. That was on McNabb, not the defense forcing something.

They have no top Wr's

there #1 Wr is Westbrook. Philly played a good game, but let’s not forget we gifted them 14 points. We won’t see them until the last game of the season when the game won’t matter. Again, we killed ourselves more than they had to do with it. The penalties were real bad. We have to shore that up. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many face masks penalities.

Rookies

one thing I like about this game…

Felix of course, TD KO return, oh yeah
Jenkins makes a crucial pass breakup
Bennett makes a third down conversion with YAC

Also Austin came back and contributed a couple good catches including a first down.

It doesnt matter where it comes from. Opposing OCs have to account for him or TO, pick your poison. He may be a TE by position, but like it or not, he’s our #2 receiver, if not our #1

and Crayton wasn't bad

in this offense with so many weapons you can’t expect him to put up big numbers every night, and he may be doing his job even if he isn’t getting the touches. he only had 2 catches for 23, and he fumbled one and recovered it himself, and dropped one (that would have been a good catch), but he also started off the final scoring drive with a big 16 yard reception. so while he made a mistake and wasn’t huge, he also contributed to the win, and as our third passing option that’s not bad.

PC came thru in the clutch. That 16 yd catch was for a 1st down, people need to quit this nonsense of how we need a “real” #2 WR. TO and Witten are uber threats, and I think you saw the speed of Stanback on display when he escorted El Gato on the TD return. Not to mention Austin contributed.

But the offense didn’t seem to have a lot of trouble stretching the field against Philly’s excellent DBs. Virtually non-checkdown every pass play was vertical down the field.

Where is that Iggles fan

First before I start about how he needs to pay up; a small note of acknowledgement to how good the eagles are. I did not realize how good their line was and dallas was neck and neck with them down to the wire. The two turnovers helped the eagles though; and changed the pace of the game. Dallas D only allowed 7 pts in the second half; and leave it to Dware to make the one sack he gets a signficant one. I have some genuine man-love for Demarcus Ware; I wanted to start singing “head, shoulder, knees, and toes” when he got that sack on mcnabb; in fact he may have started singing that as he took donavan down.

Now on to business, where are you “yophilbro”? You have a debt to pay, you and anyone else on your side who took the wager.

I just read through the Eagles game thread. Most of them reallly believe they are the better team. Considering their lucky butts only scored 7 points in the second half and we gifted them 14 points, I don’t see it.

Yeah Westbrook/McNabb fumbled but we still needed to drive the ball 70 yards down field to score a touchdown.

We are the best team in the division, hands down. We just need to get our shit together and watch the penalties and bonehead plays.

I had a ton of Lehman Brothers stock, now worthless. Oh well, a little smile at the end of the day was pleasant. Not your kid’s college fund pleasant, but pleasant in a small way.

Lehman stood by New York City after September 11th.

Lehman moved its offices to midtown, but didn’t abandon New York City in its hour of need. I was proud to hold on to such a quality stock, a 158-year-old institution.

WIthin one business quarter, the stock price went from $60 to $0. It was the largest financial disaster in Wall Street history, several times larger than Enron. Bear Stearns was propped up for sale to JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch was sold at a discount to Bank of America, but Lehman just went POOF! and disappeared into worthlessness. It’s been a tough year, the toughest financially of my life.

Anyway, the Cowboys won.

If the roles change

There is no way philly wins. If they fumbled in their end zone, and threw a horrible interception in their own 20, and committed the same amount of penalties as we did this game isn’t even close. Hats off to them though they played great and we played average, but we still won. This shows that we are definitely the superior team.

I have to get this off my chest

This team is so loaded with talent, it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I have a serious mancrush on MB3. The guy is a total beast and I am beyond happy that Jerry signed him to a long term extension.

Also I changed my mind on who should return KO’s for this team, it’s El Gato in a landslide.

I just love this year’s team all the way around.

Funny how some games turn into scoring contests...

Very entertaining game to watch. Wide open action from both teams. The NFC East sure has a lot of firepower. It now seems more likely to me that three teams will reach the playoffs from our division. The Colts, Pats and Chargers don’t rule the roost any more.

Good win for you guys….

Congrats on a great game

That was one of the best and worst games to watch since it was an absolute nail biter. Being a Philly fan I will say that I would have preferred an Eagles win but they played well and it turned out that the fine points really mattered. Some people are saying that if Romo hadn’t dropped the ball in the endzone or thrown a pick, then we would have been down 14 points rather than in contention…well, if we had sacked romo at all, had stopped Felix’s return, or not fumbled the handoff then we would have won the game. In reality, that’s the just the way the game is, there is no Should haves or would haves, you either win our you lose and the team that won is the won that won…sorry for sounding like Madden.

Anyway, I think this is the NFC championship game right here, and while I do think that if we had curtis we would have had a few more options with some more experience in our WR core, I don’t think having Reggie brown would have mattered all that much, personally I think he is about the same as Greg Lewis if not a tiny bit better.

As for the Cowboys, I thought they played a hell of game, I think that reigning in the penalties would have definitely helped you, but that’s what happens in a tough game. I would actually start Felix more then Barber and just save barber fresh for the second half, that would be exceptional, especially with his style of running. And as well as you played, I still think that Owens runs his mouth too much, but maybe I have to say that since I’m an Eagles fan.

Great game, and I saw that a few of your players were injured, I hope that it’s not too serioius since I honestly was hoping for no injuries in this game since I knew that it was going to be physical. In the second week of the season, no one wants to see that happen. But Witten is a maniac, I heard he had is shoulder dislocated during the game, so they popped it back in and he went back on playing…classic.

Congrats

Thanks for being classy in defeat, thwalls.

The nations just witnessed that Donovan McNabb is back and better than ever.

You’re right. It could have gone either way — with BOTH teams making their own share of mistakes. Heck of a game last night.

I expect you all to take care of business and defeat Pittsburgh at home this Sunday… esp. after how poorly the Steelers played against Cleveland — although I’m sure they’re just happy to have gotten out of there with the “W.”

Guess it’s safe to say that the NFC East is back to being the BEAST of the NFL!!!

Well, if the refs called the right play on Desean Jackson’s blunder from the start, if the refs called offensive PI instead of defensive on Henry, if Folk didn’t kick the opening kick OB (which i still think was the wrong call by the ref, as it looked to go through the endzone), if Romo didn’t throw that interception or fumble that ball it would have been a blowout.

I’m just saying that you have to take all of that into consideration. There’s always a lot of things that could have happened but sometimes things happen in a game (ie bad calls and blown plays). They happened on both teams, very rarely do you see a perfect game from any team, well New England circa October 2007 excluded, and that leads to opportunities. But who knows what else the refs didn’t call y’know? But at least we had better refs then the San Diego game.

I seriously don’t think we did. Even on your side of the ball…the 2 missed facemasks. There refs were absolutely horrible.

Yeah, they did miss an early flagrant facemask on Westbrook

I couldn’t believe all the facemasks, Wade needs to make them sign a new pledge or something. I thought the refs were mediocre but they kept the game under control.

Funnily enough, had a Cowboy defender grabbed Jackson’s showboat ball and run with it, it would have been virtually the same scenario as the Denver game (just with more time left).

thwalls makes good points. Both teams made some back-breaking mistakes and got away with a few other plays, and it was a really close game. I’m glad we don’t have to play Philly again til week 17.

gotta win division games at home.. and we did…

i think all conventinal wisdom goes out the window when these two teams play, so i am not so much worried about our D giving up 37, some of that is fixable…. going to have to cut down on penalties, as we can’t play like that on the road and expect to win.

While gloating over the news of the Cowboys' win in the Dallas News sports section,

there was a blurb about the blown call against Anthony Henry.
And then an article that Ref. Ed Hochuli(Mr. Muscles) would have a blackmark on his record for giving Sunday’s Denver/San Diego game to the Bronchos for a “quick whistle” .
About time some of these zebras get their comeuppance!

new Barber rule?

Wasn’t there a new rule that an offensive player couldn’t grab the face mask anymore? If so then it wasn’t getting called since Westbrook stiff armed several Cowboy defender’s in the face mask.

Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!

by DerekSTheRed on Sep 16, 2008 9:36 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I remember one play in particular

where both Westbrook and the guy tackling him were grabbing each other’s facemasks. I’m not sure who initiated contact, probably the defender. I’m kind of skeptical that penalty exists until I see it called.

I also saw several borderline horsecollars last night and on Sunday. It seems like they don’t call it anymore as long as you are using another hand on their body at the same time.

by grapejoos on Sep 16, 2008 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw that

but the facemask really has to turn the opponent’s head because they got rid of the 5 yarder in favor of only calling the flagrant 15 yarders.

And did anybody see...

…when Philly DT Juqua Thomas horse-collared The Barbarian on a run play that would have gone for more than the 6-yards gained.

You could tell that Thomas did something wrong by his reaction after the tackle, but nobody said anything about it. Heck, even the ESPN buffoons (Tirico-Korholio-Jaws) didn’t comment when shown in slow-mo.

That non-call happened on the possession before the Eagles started their final drive of the game.

There were several blown/missed calls during the game - and it went both ways. I give the officials a C for last night’s contest.

I saw that horsecollar on MB3

I was shouting at the TV, but I guess the refs didn’t hear me.

It was an exciting game, but the blown calls were blatant. The PI on Henry, the facemasks on Dallas, and the biggest was the missed call on Desean throwing the ball down before crossing the goal line
I’ve seen the replays now, and Pac is watching the ball, but after the ref signaled TD the play was dead so he couldn’t have done anything..

Defense was pretty poor... Kinda glad Roy is gone.....

Well, once again our defense started out really poor — Even though we’ve supposedly got some of the best CB’s in the league now. I can only hope that the Roy injury will push Watkins to come along a little quicker (I really LOVED that big hit he put on last night to pop the ball loose, even if the eagles receiver was able to get a lucky drop and catch it)….

Emphasis this week should be on defense and getting the CB’s to play better coverage. So many plays McNab zipped the ball into a receiver who had nobody within 10-15 feet of him, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing out there.

Also our pass rush needs to focus in practice this week on getting to the QB…. I counted atleast 5 times when we SHOULD have had a sack on McNab and they missed the tackle, or allowed him to squirm away.

Felix Jones was a stud, and proved why he is going to be the #1 kick returner for the year. Any chance we have to get the ball into this kids hands is a chance we must take, because every return looked like a potential TD last night!

I agree about the coverage

That zone just kills me. I guess our CBs can’t play man, because I feel like man coverage would have to be better than what we saw out there. That said, our D did make some big stops when we needed them to do so.

It will be interesting to see how Watkins plays. This will be a good opportunity to preview how we’ll adjust to life after Roy. I’m wondering if we won’t see Hamlin move to SS and Henry to FS as soon as Newman is healthy.

I almost threw up in my beer when I saw Roy get beat once again on the Jackson reception. This injury may be a blessing as weird at it sounds, because how much of this can the coaching staff take? New number same tired coverage skills. Nothing has changed. I hope he only returns as a backup. Hopefully, his starting days are over. Roy being out 3rd downs is not enough…

This was big test number 1

now an even bigger test and to me going to be a tougher game is coming up in Green Bay, the Defense especially the secondary looked pretty bad except for a couple of plays, this like last year worries me the most about the Boys, anyway great game last night, lets hopw they do well and win in GB

by TRFAN on Sep 16, 2008 10:49 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

GB might have a better offense than Philly, albeit with no Westbrook. They certainly have better WRs and Rodgers has been pretty damn good so far. A little easier to tee off on them, but it’s gonna be one tough game.

by grapejoos on Sep 16, 2008 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

GB has a good Off

but a Def that allows the lions to come back in the 4th with 3 td’s and the GB off sputtered during that quarter; hands down Philly is a more complete team. GB D is not as good as philly’s; and Rodgers is still fitting in to his role as the starter. It is possible that he may struggle against dallas since it is still early in the season. On the same note, the Gints do not look that consistent either and are thin on Defense, meaning they could get worn down in a game if they cannot control the line.

by cowboy78 on Sep 16, 2008 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

GB

GB has a solid D as well. Their corners are aggressive and press on most downs. I think though our offense is too good to be pressured at the line by the other team’s DBs. Philly always gave us fits cause they can get to Romo, I am not sure GB can do the same.

Crayton needs to step up this week

We can’t depend on Witten, TO, MB3 and Jones to bail us out. He needs show he can be productive against the better CB’s in this league. We escaped last night without much of a contribution from him, but that can’t happen every week.

I have him in one league and took him out

thank goodness I did. I wouldn’t use him next week against GB’s CB’s also. I expect him put up less than 50 yds again. He simply doesn’t perform well against top CB’s. That was so the truth last night.

I haven't broken down film

But against Philly’s CBs, 2 catches on 2 targets isn’t that bad when the passing game is basically doing whatever it wants. Romo only threw 9 incompletions; one was a pick (bad throw), another was a dump-off he should have hit to MB3, another was pass interference on TO in the endzone, etc. There were, at most, 6 pass plays where you could say someone failed to get open. Crayton may have been open more than his targets indicated (again, can’t say since I haven’t broken down film). All things considered, for a supposedly sub-par 2nd WR in Crayton against pro bowl CBs, I don’t think that’s too shabby.
