With Roy Williams out Davis Or Watkins?

We know Roy's going to miss some significant time with a broken arm. I'll assume Watkins is now the starter. But what about starting Keith Davis at STRONG Saftey? He fits roys mold as an in the box safety, he played great in last years start vrs the panthers and if he starts you could stay with the same substitution of watkins in passing situations. I like both Watkins and Davis but I've always felt Davis could be a good safety if he had someone back there who could cover and now the boys do(Hamlin). Anyone else agree?

I like Watkins better or Coutney Brown even.....

But Davis is too slow for the position, and has the same weakness Roy has, but even more. He gets beat deep all the time, and receivers can just plain out-run him. He needs to be a special teams guy, and be used in situations where we’ve got the game well in hand so we don’t get any of our key players injured.

Watkins has been coming along well, and even put a hard hit on a guy last night that I liked seeing. Also Courtney Brown has amazing speed, and could definitely bring a lot to fix our problems with deep cover. He might be the guy we want to use on 3rd and long, and use Watkins for 1st & 2nd… Then we’d insure we didn’t get beat on any play.

Agreed

I’d rather have someone in there with the speed to cover. Killer can save his strength for special teams.

Special teams only for Davis

Davis has a tendency to bite on play action and doesn’ t have the speed to recover. As others have said, Watkins is our best option at strong safety.

+1

Watkins or Brown.

I would like to see Brown get on the field more in defensive sets than Davis. Let’s just keep Bullet on ST, so that Watkins can concentrate on his new starting role.

I like his range and he had a couple of nice sticks last game.

What about Hamlin at SS and Watkins at FS

I don’t think Davis is good enough to start at SS. My second choice would be leaving Hamlin at FS and put Watkins or Brown at SS. (Although Watkins seems better back in centerfield, and Brown hasn’t been activated for a game yet, so someone else would have to sit.)

I want Courney Brown in there.....

Watkins had a few nice moments……but he also had at least two key penalties that cost us. He plays too undisiplined for my liking…..we’ll see how this all plays out…….unfortunately the Davis signing hinders the developement of Brown for the sake of having a special teams ace…..which at the time of the signing I reluctantly could understand…..but we’ll find out quickly Sunday night if having Hamlin playing deep center field will have a negative effect on our coverage underneath….Hopefully Watkins delivers….but I sure don’t look at him as a Strong Safety……Brown is more adepth at covering in close quarters, is much faster, quicker, and built to work up close covering backs and TE’s…….What should be done is moving Henry to FS and Hamlin to SS……having Adam Jones and Newman playing the outside CB spots….Jenkins and or Scandrick in the slot…….GB will have plenty of 4 WR sets……….THIS upcoming game is our real test for the secondary…….Brian Stewart and Campo better pick it up…………cuz i’m not impressed thus far…

did you see courtney brown in the preseason

He looked lost, I don’t think he made a single play that is remember able.

Watkins will start at SS, Hamlin at FS

Wade has already made that decision.

I don't get that decision, seems like the opposite would be a better fit

But what do I know. I’ll trust Wade when it comes to defense.

I thought the same thing

but in his presser Wade said Hamlin is a natural FS. However, like Deke has been preaching forever, in today’s NFL, there really isn’t much of a difference between either position, both now have to be able to defend the run and pass equally well.

I love the move..

Teams are going to try to test Watkins, I think Watkins has a real chance to prove his worth. We have been grooming this kid for a couple of years. He will be ready.

Agree with that philosophy

And while Watkins may not be a big-hitter, for a strong safety, he can cover. Our run D has been good, and if we can keep that going with Watkins in there, it will definitely benefit our pass defense.
