DAL vs. PHI/ What Worked

What worked for Dallas against the Eagles:

1.  Although he went over a 100 all-purpose yards and had 3 TD's, I thought we did a good job of keeping Brian Westbrook in check.  Did he catch some passes and do some things against us?  Of course.  But he's a great player, and he's going to get his.  The thing you have to make sure of is that you don't let him beat you.  Although he had some decent pickups, he didn't have any of those HUGE backbreaking plays he always seems to have against us.  I thought we did a great job of stopping them on the inside draws and off tackle plays that he usually kills us on.
2.  Aside from the opening kickoff and one good return, I thought we played very well on special teams.  Felix Jones broke one for a TD and consistently got good yardage on his returns.  I didn't like that we had a kick return and a punt return called back on penalties, but it's obvious our return teams are much improved from last year.  On coverage, we held them inside the 25 for most of the night on kickoffs and didn't let them get going on punts, which we we didn't have very many of.  We were facing what, in my opinion, might be the best young 1-2 punch of returners in the league in Jackson and Demps.  And of course, Folk is automatic.
3.  Zach Thomas was the anchor of our defense.  He didn't miss tackles, flowed well to the ball, and did an excellent job of diagnosing the plays and reacting to them.  He also made a great play down the field in coverage on LJ Smith, though I think it was equal parts luck and skill.  He was, in addition, very effective on the inside blitzes, as he was against Clevelan.
4.  I thought we did a good job of taking advantage of the fact that the Eagles were selling out to stop the run.  I wish we would have taken more shots down the field, but when we did we had guys running open.  We connected on some big plays down the field, and had a couple of near misses to Witten and TO.  They both did a great job of running down the field routes and creating seperation.  I would have liked to have seen us take some shots down the field to Stanback or Austin though.  I think Stanback showed us on that Jones TD how fast he is.
5.  This game was a huge gutcheck for this team, and I think although it wasn't with flying colors, they definitely passed.  They were down early, made some big mistakes, and hurt themselves often, but when it came down to it, they made the plays they needed to for them to win the game.  Overcoming adversity is the sign of a championship caliber team, and we overcame plenty last night.  From the Romo mistakes, to the penalties, right down to the hype of this game.  We had several players leave due to injury, and their backups came in and played well during their absence.  I thought aside from his facemask, Watkins did an admirable job replacing Roy.  When Witten was in the locker room getting worked on, Curtis and Bennett made some nice plays to keep drives going.

What didn't work for Dallas against the Eagles:

1.  I know Romo put a strong emphasis on his footwork and pocket presence in the offseason, and we saw it on full display against Cleveland.  As well as that worked against the Brownies, it didn't against the Eagles.  Romo looked anxious and razzed on his first throw, and continued to for the duration of the game.  He was back to having those happy feet again, and, for the most part, didn't set his feet and throw with good mechanics.  It looked to me that several times he unloaded the ball too quickly in anticipation of a blitz that never came.
2.  The Eagles didn't do a whole lot of blitzing in this game (compared to their usual anyway), but when they did, it was very effective.  I saw several ole's and missed assignments by the RB's.  I know that Proctor missed the inside guy on one play and had to grab him, negating a big play.  The Eagles also routinely got good pressure in only bringing four guys, as it seemed our tackles consistently had problems with the speed rushes from Cole and Parker.
3.  I thought that we used Bradie James against Brian Westbrook too much.  Although James is fairly good at coming up and making sure tackles in the running game, he does not have a skill set that allows him to make plays in the passing game against an athlete of Westbrook's class.  Although he didn't shut him down by any means, I thought Kevin Burnett did a much better job of keeping tabs on Westbrook in space.  I had said in another post that KB and Zach Thomas as our two LB's in nickel situations would be very effective against a lot of the Eagles' personel groupings.  I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to see that matchup a little more.
4.  I was both shocked and disgusted in the playcalling on both offense and defense last night.  Offensively, I would have liked to have seen us work out of the shotgun a little more.  It seemed to me that we had our most success, both running and passing, when we spread them out and gave them different looks.  I thought we were extremely ineffective at trying to run the ball straight ahead, especially in two back sets.  Delays seemed to be pretty effective against the upfield rush, and I thought we should have used them a little more to try and counterpunch their aggressiveness.  Defensively, we played way too much zone coverage.  We shelled out all of these draft picks for these guys so that we would have the ability to play man coverage, press receivers, and get after the QB a little bit more.  And yet what happened last night?  We played soft zone all night and let McNabb pick us apart, gave receivers 8-10 yard cushions, and futilely tried to get pressure with our four man rush.  And even when we did get pressure, the tackling was so bad that McNabb just walked out of the pocket and picked up the first down with his arms or legs.
5.  Penalties!  The most frustrating thing about the penalties that we took last night was that they were all bad penalties.  They weren't effort penalties.  They were all caused by a lack of discipline or poor techinique.  Had guys used better tackling technique last night and been in better position, we wouldn't have had so many broken tackles and facemasks.  Instead of going low and wrapping up, everyone was headhunting, and it cost us by extending a lot of drives.

Just my two sense on the game.  Feel free to add in what you thought we did or didn't do well last night.

What a meticulously exhaustive post

Did you take notes and/or watch film? Or was this pure memory?

Btw, I too was upset with the turnovers, the many missed tackles and the stupid penalties throughout most of da game last night.

But to echo one of your points, I loved that this team did a gutcheck and never stopped swinging to eventually overcome their mistakes.

What a win!!! I’ll take it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for this breakdown, mandmeisterx!!!

I disgaree about Romo

I thought he played very well with the exception of the INT and fumble, to me, he didn’t look razzled or anxious at all, he looked as cool as the other side of the pillow.

I couldn't agree more Terry

He looked as calm as I’ve ever seen him. Especially against the ‘organized chaos’.

Even the MNF crew kept pointing out how he was standing tall and steady in the pocket.

for terry
I think Romo played well and is still improving, he is going to peak at the right time this season.

I agree but don't listen to them

That Monday Night crew with the exception of Terico were horrible. Jaws was an obvious homer and the other guy didn’t and dosen’t have a clue, maybe when he stops trying to be funny and actually look at a game.

I think that Romo,

especially in the second half, seemed to settle down some. But there were definitely times when he reverted back to his old self, with the side arm slinging and bouncing feet. I’m not oblivious to the fact that Romo came through when we needed a big play, I would just like to see a little more consistency, that’s all.

by Mandmeisterx on Sep 17, 2008 7:10 AM CDT up reply actions

that only happened once

on the play when he almost had his head taken off, I think the majority of qbs would have been sacked or thrown an INT as well under that kind of duress and pressure.

He’s a gunslinger and will do that from time to time, but dude, although the guy is awesome, you can’t expect perfection 100% of the time, even the all time great HOFs made mistakes.

Don't get me wrong

Although I don’t love Romo as much as you, I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. I think he’s the perfect QB for our offense. But there’s always room for improvement. I don’t think it’s ever a good thing to settle for how good you are, because there’s always something that can be tweeked to improve your game. I doubt even Brady is content with the way he plays.

by Mandmeisterx on Sep 17, 2008 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Its not about settling

thats not it at all, its about accepting what kind of qb Romo is and thats a gunslinger, thats who he is, remember Parcells always saying you are what you are, well thats Romo. So no matter how much he keeps improving his game, he’s mentality as a gunslinger will always be trying to make a big play or something out of nothing, that won’t change, thats who he is, its not about getting better. Two entirely different concepts.

I can accept that,

I just want to see him a little more settled in the pocket yet. I think he has made great strides since last year, but I still thought he struggled with it some against the Eagles rush.

Romo is like that extremely hot chick

with a beautiful face and hot body, but an ugly wart in a few places. We just have to accept the flaws and admire the rest, because the rest of him is tremendous.

Every qb has growing pains

he is still young..

Peyton was decent in his playoff run during the superbowl. Brady looked very decent vs Giants pass rusher.. I’ll take Romo over any other QB not named Peyton or Tom

With all of the pastic surgeons out there, if some hot chick isn’t smart enough to get her warts removed, then she can date an Eagles fan, but not me.

My only critique is

On a play like that, take the sack. Don’t duck it and then throw a blind pass against a team with that good a secondary. Romo is amazing at evading pressure, but when he gets in that frenetic mindset, he makes bad (and sometimes good) decisions. I think he’ll fix it, but that play was Buffalo-esque.

he was still in the pocket

so it would have been a grounding call anyway. Hey, he’s always trying to make a play and I’ll never fault him for that.

The fumble in the end zone yeah I screamed for him to just fall on the ball, but I also said the samething last year against the rams.

agree

that we should have run more delays – the one time they did, it got good yardage. Romo does a very very good job of selling pass on the delay handoff. I like that we can also fake end-around and cause the D to hesitate.

one thing we executed which we have not seen for years and years and years as Boys fans is a screen play that actually worked! linemen running out in front, RB patiently setting up blocks – wow, a thing of beauty – esp. compared to more recent attempts at screens.

by Scoobay on Sep 16, 2008 4:12 PM CDT reply actions

Defense...

I agree, particularly on the defensive comment… why WERE we playing so much soft zone? A QB like McNabb can (and did) find receivers entering/leaving the zones. How many times did we give up 15 or 20 yards to have the receiver tackled immediately by the safety coming up? Hey don’t get me wrong, a win is a win, but I foresee a lot of issues if we don’t play some man and send some blitzes to pressure QB’s this year.

Just my .02

I have noticed a new resurgence in Cowboy hating in 2007, which can only mean one thing- We're back.

The Eagles defense may have gotten some pressure, but the bottom line is...

Only 1 time did it lead to ANYTHING. And that’s after Romo did his own ’ole and then threw the bad INT.

ZERO sacks on Romo, through 2 games. Nuff said.

by mhuff13 on Sep 16, 2008 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

I take that back, the 2nd time it had a huge impact was the overthrow to MB3 on 3rd down

During that last drive to run out the clock.

But still, 0 sacks against the Eagles. Wow.

by mhuff13 on Sep 16, 2008 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

A lot of times pressure is more important than sacks.

If you have a QB under duress all game, and force him to throw earlier than he wants, but don’t sack him, that’s still an extremely effective game.

Absolutely…

Case in point: would Philly rather have the sack or the INT that Romo threw?

I love how

people say the Eagles “shut down” T.O. in the second half. You dont shut down T.O., you just choose to be beaten by all the other weapons. So what if T.O. isnt the one who beats you? Even if he isnt catching the ball, he’s still causing you to allow others to beat you.

I’ve always said, T.O. is still valuable even if he never gets the ball.

You try to stop TO and Witten will murder you down the seam..

I am interested to see how we work in Austin deep with teams doing everything they can to make sure TO doesn’t catch the ball.

point of order!

Some very interesting insight, although I tend to disagree about Romo…somewhat. He had times where he was RoboRomo out there, and times where he looked like an undrafted free agent.

Anyhow the real reason I’m posting here. I am something of a spelling Nazi, and all the errors on the board are driving me nuts. I’m going to make quality points from time to time, but mostly I’m just an eccentric that enjoys the Cowboys.

I agree for the most part on all counts.....except this comment:
We were facing what, in my opinion, might be the best young 1-2 punch of returners in the league in Jackson and Demps.

- although they are talented, Jackson more so than Demps, you certainly can’t base your opinion on speculation, or their success in preseason games….We did contain them exceptionally well, and I’m not as much concerned or worried about our coverage units….With healthy Burnett, and Spencer back in the fold, and reaquiring Davis, our coverage units are improving weekly…

BUT,

THEE BEST young 1-2 punch of returners in the league is without question Felix Jones and Adam Jones !!

A true diehard Cowboys fan since 1975.

"If you don’t take him off the field as a coach, he will just about die out there," Jerry Jones said. "That impacted my decision. It’s a Michael Irvin-type work ethic. That’s what we are talking about with Felix Jones."

“in my opinion” because I believe that they will both be successful return men in this league. As previously stated, just my opinion.

umm.....that average will change, once our D starts forcing more punts.....trust....Felix Jones leads the NFL with a 37 yard KO return average...

I don’t see Felix losing that lead all season, and will average over 30 yards per return for the season…..and Adam Jones will be among the top 5 in Punt Return average by years end…….

I disagree

I thought that Flo an Columbo did a good job, I didn’t see the happy feet that you mentioned. The eagles didn’t get a sack the closet they came Romo ducked (should’ve ran I thought) and threw the int. I think your nit picking
