What was wrong with Newman tonight?

He's always one of my favorite players, but Jeezus -- He gave up like 4 HUGE plays tonight!  I witnessed him give up 2 touchdowns, and a 40+ yard bomb along the sidelines.  Looked like he fell down on 1 play....  I think I remember him being like this last year too when he came off of injury -- it always takes him a few games up get up to speed!  Ugh....  Would have rather seen Pacman covering the edges this week.

Please stop overreacting

I saw him slip on the 1st TD, and get burned on one pass to Moss (which led to a FG). Not the end of the world. Where was the pressure from the guys up front?

well

either…
1) he is still injured
2) he is not in shape yet
3) he missed so much preseason he isn’t ready to play
4) his big contract took away his edge

i am hoping its 2 or 3. he has not been himself all year.

APS, its not the slip, or even this game, he hasn’t been anything approaching a pro bowl player this year (and far far from a shut down corner). i think its temporary… i hope its temporary

Don't Forget...

He also missed Campbell on a sack as well.

But he did flush Campbell from the pocket

Which led to their center running down field thinking it was a QB scramble, and the penalty negated their TD so it turned out OK.

he's still shaking off the rust from being hurt all pre season

he’ll be fine as the season moves on. I’d rather have him giving up plays now instead of January, thats for sure.

In my book, he’s still the best cover corner in the game, just had a bad day, happens to the best of them at any position.

T-new

Looked like T-OLD yesterday!
I’ll give him a pass on the thrash touchdown….
But he has no excuse for the rest of the game.
I hope its just the hangover from the injury….
but our pass coverage was aweful all the way around.

He wasn’t the only one though…..

I was thinking

the whole time; get Pacman in there!

by bryangene on Sep 29, 2008 8:54 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

exactly

I was thinking the same. Pacman is at least aggressive to the ball. Newman is not. Newman has never been a game changer and never will. I warned given Newman this big contract considering his age and lack of play making ability. Well, if this the Newman we will see from here on out Jerry is going to take a bath on his contract. I hope for the organizations sake he turns it around because this deal could be the makings of another Williams scenerio, but alot worse….

Adam Jones should have been put on him from the start...man vs man....

no friggin excuse….Adam Jones broke up two slants against Moss, and has the ability to stick to his hip….The was the worst performance by Newman ever……..and I blame Stewart for not adjusting the coverage scheme….Washington’s back up’s were able to shut down our WR’s..umm….cuz we were simply out coached in every phase of the game…

Exactly

Jones is supposed to be the man to man specialist. If Moss is burning Newman on man coverage get Jones in there.

Dont worry about NEWMAN

He didnt play well and he admitted it. I cant think of the last time he had a bad game. I lie our chances of it not happening again. Like it was pointed out above, he slipped on that first td. On the 2nd score any cb would have been beat, Jason C had all day and the wr just started to improvise, that goes on the pass rush IMO. The bomb was his worst play, He admitted the coaches talked about that specific play and he still took the bait. At least he caught moss and then wash was forced to kick a fg. After all, the 2nd half was much better(pass coverage) but probably because the run defense was so awfull. Knowing wash. was going to try running out the clock and not doing anything to counter was disheartening.

he’ll definitely get better as the season progresses as will the other DBs. Our defense is a work in progress, it will get better in time as well.

Simmer Down Now.

5 of the best of the corners in the league of been cooked on a regular basis..
Champ Bailey
Dre Bly
N. Asoumuga
D. Hall
A. Cromartie

All of these guys have been getting roasted on regular basis..

So, Newman had a bad game.. Corners have been getting roasted all season..

Regular basis?

Is the fact that other corners are being burned on a regular basis supposed to be comforting to Cowboys fans? Most on that list have atleast 2 INTs to our none.

by bryangene on Sep 29, 2008 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If your hoping for Newman to all of a sudden

become a INT machine it’s not going to happen. He doesn’t play aggressive enough. When he does, just like when he tryed to undercut the pass to Moss he got burnt badly for a long play.

He can stick to any one

The guy is coming off a freak groin injury and is not being used properly. Why don’t you get off you soapbox about how you were right and start worrying about the shoddy play of our FS who just got a fat contract. Where the hell was he in the game????

I do agree with that............

imo, Hamlin has been a disappointment all season.

well we may have more of that ahead

some web guy made a great point…

teams NEVER threw the ball at Hamlin when he lined up across from Roy, b/c Roy is a liability and they picked on him. Now with Roy out (and playing fewer passing downs when he is healthy), we will see if Hamlin is the Pro Bowler we thought we signed or the bad cover Safety Seattle thought they let go…

by 325424 on Sep 29, 2008 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly why I said Hamlin should've

replaced Roy at SS and moved Watkins at FS. I think they are playing the wrong positions. When Hamlin was at his best he was playing SS, not FS. Watkins is not a SS. He has the speed and range to play FS.

still making adjustments

This team is still a bunch of mixed parts.. I don’t expect to see the continuity for another couple of weeks.

We need more push on the line. We need Ellis and Spencer to start beating one on one coverage..

More pressure on the QB, consistently, and playing the CB’s closer to the line would be nice.

Well...if he isn't healthy he shouldn't be playing

or matched up against the best WR they have. A Wr that has repeatedely torched us in the past. Poor excuse APerfectStar……..He better get his game together real quick….

I didn’t see any of the other Cowboys DB’s do any better.

um yeah..Pacman did..

I saw at least 2 pass deflections by Pacman. One on Moss because he was aggressive on the ball.

They played him up tight to the line and he swatted away a quick slant

I knew you would bring that up. LOL

You missed the point

My point is every corner gets burnt.. T New had a bad game, but some of the best have been getting cooked on regular basis. Just a fact.

T New isn’t perfect, but is good out way his bad. In a 16 game season he is good for 14 good, 2 bad..
