Dallas Cornerbacks?
Can anyone help me understand why we continue to give opposing receivers free releases off the line of scrimmage? Our corners our almost always 7-10 yards off the line of scrimmage at the snap.
The Redskins "west cost" offense is based on timing, so if you are bringing pressure forcing the QB to get rid of the ball quickly, why not also take the receivers off of their routes and confuse the timing for the QB.
Newman and Jones are supposed to be really fast so why are they worried about getting blown by? As for Henry, he is not so fast but he should be able to do what Springs and Harris did to T.O.. be physical and keep to guy from running by him.
It just looks to me like we are constantly in the prevent defense in the secondary, we play scared, worried about getting beat deep instead of aggressive like Baltimore.
That said, the whole team got pushed around yesterday...we looked soft, the Giants running backs are probably licking their chops.

Remember
that long pass that newman was beat by moss? That was a man coverage play, as much talk about how we want more man/press coverage, remember that it has serious conseqences if you miss. Dallas played a lot more man in this game than any of the previous ones.

Yeah
but 10 yards off the line of scrimmage most of the time is just unacceptable. Those receivers are small and we should have smacked them around all day long

nothing is wrong with playing way off the line and playing zone
but if thats what we are going to do we shouldn’t spend the money and picks it takes to get TNew, Henry, Pac, Jenkins, etc….
if we are going to play 10 yards off we should just run with Scandrick and one of the others and spend money and picks on pass rushers.
the giants did well with 3 or 4 pass rushers and marginal corners. if we are going to force our corners to play a style that makes them marginal we should spend resources to get guys like jared allen….
maybe i am nuts but this makes little economic sense

Actually
When Newman got beat, he was playing back off of the line of scrimmage and bit on Moss’s move, trying to jump the pass. Then when Moss went deep, Newman slipped

I agree with ya dukes
I’ve been saying this for the last two years now. We drop off in coverage and give them all the easy underneath routes and never seem to come up to the line and play physical. Pacman made a play on a 3rd down pass because he was playing up tight and was able to close before Moss caught the ball.
Remember the lions game last year when we allowed 20 out routes throughout the game? The way the redskins played our recievers should be a model for the rest of the season for our guys. I’m not saying to play press coverage every down, but we could definitely use more physicality at the line of scrimmage to throw off the easy slants/drags/and out routes we continue to give up week in and week out.

Good question
I just posted the same thing on another thread before I read this.

still a mystery 2 me
I hate that 10 yrds off the receiver mess! its really hard to cover somebody if they have a running start at you & they know were there going. I HATE IT!!!

Amen!
Why are we not jamming at the line and attempting to throw off the time on those quick 3 steps drops?

I have no idea
The Redskins were willing to take short passes for short gains (because we gave it to them), but as a defense we have to make it hard for them to do that. We obviously have to get nasty with those receivers to knock the timing between the QB and receiver. Smack those receivers, they’re tiny and we let them beat us without much of a battle

Short passing is part of the west coast system

yes sir
So you have to jam them to disrupt the timing..

and
with our pass rush, there is no reason not to start jamming recievers at the line, that would throw off the timing and give our pass rush more time to get to the QB cause it would take away the short routes that have been killing us

bump and run
I imagine it has alot to do with our lack of safety play the last few years. The Moss catch the other day is a great example. We didn’t have a safety over the top and a double move got us. I don’t know if there was supposed to be a safety or not on that particular play. But just like against GB when we were in Cover 2 and the safety went with the man up the seam it left Jennings wide open late in that game. Our safeties have to play better for us to have the confidence to play bump and run. There have only been a handful of corners ever in this league that could take a man one on one with no help and not get burned. Its just a reality. The receiver knows where and what he is running. The defender has to react. Newman, Pac, Jenkins and Henry are all good players but they cant be counted on to react quick enough to not let guys get wide open all day long.

good point
No safety over the top and blitz doesn’t get there, we are going to get killed..
We have to get there with our blitzs.. We have the CB’s to press and disrupt the timing, but Santana Moss with a free release forget it…

Stewart
I hope Stewart was watching the Pitt/Bal game last night. Both those teams run 3-4s and are able to put pressure on the QB almost at will. we don’t seem to be as creative with our blitz schemes or disguising what we are doing.

So frustrating.. When Pittsburgh gets there, the QB goes down..

For whatever reason we are the worst blitzing team in the league
Are LB’s get stuffed at the line or miss tackles. Same goes for the CB’s..

Stewart
We were entirely out coached! Maybe its time to start looking for a new defensive coordinator. I think this is just a sign of things to come. Every year teams seem to figure out what offensive schemes work best against our defense and pound the ball down our throats. We have tremendous athletes on the defensive side of the ball. Probably could end up with 7 or 8 of them making the pro bowl. With that being said, who fault is it when the opposing team racks up 381 yards against your defense??? We definitely need a defensive coordinator who can adjust his plan at halftime to shutdown the opposing team’s offense. Stewart doesn’t seem like the man for the job.

Stewart is a doofus
He has no clue and wouldn’t be in his position if Wade wasn’t coach.

How many times has DeMarcus
…swiped at the quarterback instead of delivering that bone-rattling hit that usually makes QB’s jumpy? I think he just needs to HIT them instead of swiping at the ball so much.
And how come I see that on film and Stewart cannot?
