Now, I ask you...
| There has been much talk about the Dallas Cowboys being the Preseason Favorites to represent The NFC in the Super Bowl by many so called experts this year, and to their credit or detriment they have been drinking the kool aid also. Now, I ask you is this confidence or arrogance? Not only have the Cowboys disrespected the Super Bowl Champs, the New York Giants and all the other teams in the NFC East, 3 of which went to the playoffs just like the Cowboys; But they are seemingly disregarding the whole of the NFC in general. Now I ask, you is this wise? Football people for the most part fall into two categories: Those that love the Cowboys and those that love to hate the Cowboys. I do not think this is stretch of my imagination when I say teams throughout the league view playing the Cowboys ( despite the year or the record ) with a anticipation reserved for few games outside the playoffs. Yes, everyone loved the thought of beating the Cowboys before. Now I ask you, what do you think they feel now? It is true that every team challenges every team every week of every season with the hopes of reaching and winning the final game; However, I do not in my 38 years of watching this great game remember a team seemingly publicly proclaiming where they are going to be come February. No, this is not your usual hopeful preseason possibility. Intended or not this is a glove across your face, spit in your eye, " what you going to do now punk" challenge; Be it born out of Cowboy Pride or generated by the media then fueled and magnified by Hard Knocks, the gauntlet has been laid. Now I ask you can they withstand the tempest of disrespected gladiators that will face them in the arena? |

The Dallas Cowboys team and the players themselves...
Do not have one thing to do with “media predictions”. Just because the Cowboys are a popular pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl does not constitute disrespect on the part of the players towards any other team. And not once have I heard any Dallas Cowboys player say “We are going to win the Super Bowl, screw these other guys, they might as well not show up”…On the contrary, a lot of them have the attitude of “We are talented, we were sucessful last year, we know we can win, we just have to put it together in the playoffs.”
The team as a collective whole knows it is one of the most talented in the NFC, and they realize the pressure is on to be successful in the postseason. The Giants won the Super Bowl last year, on the strength of a historic post season run, fueled by a strong showing against the Patriots in week 16 (Genius coaching move by Coughlin to play the starters). The team was successful mainly because of the incredible play of the defense, namely the defensive line. Well, two of the top three pass rushers from the Giants last year are gone. How could you justify saying that the team this year is just as strong as it was in the Super Bowl six months ago?
The Cowboys are in the opposite boat. The Cowboys’ biggest weakness last year has been drastically improved, on paper. Jerry Jones went out and made sure our defensive secondary was a complete turn around from how it was last year which was in one word vastly inconsistent. But when looking around at preseason predictions, you have to look at what the team has on paper. Last year this time, it was thought Coughlin wouldn’t last to midseason, and then he won it all.
Pay no attention to these predictions. It’s all just hot air anyways. And besides, professional football players who won the Super Bowl last year shouldn’t have to worry about being “disrespected”. If they need to use a few sound bites from Crayton and Romo to get geared up, then that shows how worried they truly are. Last night on Hard Knocks Tony Romo had this to say:
“We can fast forward through this preseason, through the regular season, get to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl or whatever and be there now. But so much of the fun and so much of the excitement is this whole process. I mean, it’s the old saying: The journey is the funnest part.”
For some reason, folks have picked that up as arrogance on Romo’s part when I believe it’s the exact opposite. His point is that all of this talk about the post season and the Super Bowl is superflous: you have to get there first, and the best thing you can do is enjoy the ride.

Personally
One of my favorite things about the Cowboys has always been their swagger and their pride. Now, I’m a fan because of them I grew up near Dallas, there’s no question I would hate them if I were a fan of any other team. Anyways I dont view anything they’ve done or said this offseason as “disrespect”. Maybe I’ve just not heard it – and I do have selective hearing so sue me. I have heard the national media put them above their NFC East opponents. I’ve also heard the Dallas players say that they don’t see why they wouldn’t be in the mix at the end and that’s valid, but with all that obvious talent they have no excuse not to be.
I’m sure you could find evidence of hypocrisy or double standards on my part with very little effort if you wanted to, but this is actually one of reasons I hate New England so much. If you’re a cocky (cheating) team, be cocky. Don’t be fake modest/humble, it’s painfully obvious and it’s not necessary. Does it make your trophy more shiny because you had a t-shirt that said “humble pie” on it and you almost convinced the world your QB was barely able to limp onto the field? I’m not kidding myself, I also hate ’em because they went to the big dance last year while Dallas was sorting out another playoff loss. Oh well, whose been 8 times? Say it louder!
My point is it would probably be better karma, or something even less trivial and vague, if Dallas were to assume a humble disposition or make a big deal out of not having accomplished anything, but then they wouldn’t be the team I love. I’m not interested in watching a team that doesn’t believe, walk, and talk like they are going all the way. Last season is over, if you’re not scared of Dallas check the roster one more time. Let the other teams bring it all on, save it all up for Dallas and take your best shot! Thats only going to make for better football and I guarantee you to a man nobody on the Dallas squad is worried about that.

This can be viewed 2 ways.
All of Dallas’s opponents will gauge the level of their team’s abilities based on how well they perform against the Cowboys. Therefore, each team will raise their bar and some of them will act like it’s their Superbowl. This can bode well for Dallas. The competition each week will keep them alert as each game will feel like a playoff game.
The downside may be that the Cowboys will work their a$$es off in the regular season trying to fend off the very best that every team brings. They may not be able to rest starters or enjoy as many blowouts as last year. Hopefully, they won’t wear out by playing 16 playoff-like game atmosphere before they reach the real tournament.

You got it! Now I ask you...
is it just a matter of perseption?
Real or not. Media generated no dought! But there it is.
Gaz, I like your answer and Biggriggs you added a point I really didn’t think about. I thought the Pats peaked just before the playoffs last year and were maybe a little tired going into the game. (no excuse), but I also thought the Pats Oline was no match for the Giants, and it wasn’t.
Anyway, I love the thought given in all responses thus far. Sry if it gives you a head ache

The Antithesis
As an NFC East Rival, yes we do get hyped to play Dallas. I’m not sure that the entire league sees the Cowboys as the measuring stick for a championship run though. I don’t think that Romo was trying to be disrespectful of any team, but it was a huge mistake to say that.
He’s opened pandora’s box, and teams are going to be gunning for him. His comments from Hard Knocks were extremely arrogant. Especially coming from him (for obvious reasons). It’s one thing to exude confidence, and act like you are the next super bowl champions, but it’s entirely different when you say that you are already looking past everyth team/game leading up to winning the Super Bowl.

he didn't say that at all
he actually said the opposite, that he is looking forward to the journey of the regular season. If you actually listened to what he said, you’d know this.

Uhhh... He did say that
And I quote: “We can fast forward through this preseason, through the regular season, get to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl or whatever and be there now. But so much of the fun and so much of the excitement is this whole process. I mean, it’s the old saying: The journey is the funnest part.”- Tony Romo
He then went on to say that he was looking forward to the journey.

Oooooooookay
He’s just saying that they’re going to have fun this season. He’s really not a cocky kid. He’s not predicting anything or being stupid.
If you took what he said offensive, then that’s your bad. I’m sure Donovan’s interviews could be picked apart by NFC East fans, but just because Romo is the young gun of the division doesn’t make him extremely arrogant.

that was a hypothetical
or don’t you know the difference

The difference between hypothetical and???
I’m not saying that because of his status that he’s extremely arrogant. I’m saying that his statement was arrogant. Maybe that wasn’t his intention, but it wasn’t the most eloquent way of making his point that the the journey is the best part.

You gotta remember that HBO edits these interviews for TV.
Bloggers here have been discussing their portrayal of many of the profiled team members on the show.
HBO is looking for confident-sounding material this year because they showcased the making/rebuilding of a team last year with the Chiefs.
With the Cowboys, their theme is on how to build a championship team, or a return to excellence.

between hypothetical and really saying
that he’s looking past teams because clearly he was not saying that and it didn’t come across as arrogant to me at all.

How about McNabb
coming out with “we are the team to beat in the NFC east” for the second year in a row? That means by your logic, he opened Pandora’s box and everyone will be gunning for him.
BTW, you are taking Romo’s statement out of context bc if you watch Hard Knocks he says “if we make it to the superbowl, or whatever” in a very non-arrogant way.
Bottom line, Terry nailed it, if your team doesn’t think they can win it all then their season is over before it begins.

People are going to look for a reason to hate cowboys, not matter what we say or do, it wil be used as fuel to the fire..

hold on a minute exactly HOW is thgis statement arrogant?
"We can fast forward through this preseason, through the regular season, get to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl or whatever and be there now. But so much of the fun and so much of the excitement is this whole process. I mean, it’s the old saying: The journey is the funnest part."
When I read this I don’t see arrogance, I see a guy that isn’t focusing on the end but how he is going to get there. HOW is this arrogant? Personally I think you may be wanting to see it as arrogant.

I say who cares how the other teams feel
or if they feel disrespected, its not the Cowboys problem. Bottom line is that they feel they have as much or more talent than any team in the league and there would be something seriously wrong with them if they didn’t feel they should go the SB and win it. The fact that they are outspoken about it is completely irrelevant.
The game is played on the field, not through the media or what players say or don’t say.

Gladiators
Terry, you are spot on. The game is played on the field, and if they are the best team in the NFC they are going to have to prove it. On paper the Cowboys are extremely dangerous, but all it is is paper. We are in the toughest division in football, and we are all going to battle one another for supremacy.

The only division in the conference that is hanging tough with the current AFC dominance.

Great comment. If the Giant players feel disrespected based on what NFL writers think or what is being portrayed on a television docmentary, then they’ll have their chance to take care of business on the field. Sports really does play out the maxim that actions speak louder than words.

im not really scared if everybody is gunning for us
i dont want to look like a typical Dallas fan, but it has nothing to do with Dallas if the personell and staff was on another team, I’d say the same thing about them……….let them bring all they want……
