Bollinger is signed. Bartel Released
Brooks Bollinger has been added to the 53-man roster and wide receiver Mike Jefferson will be released by the end of the day to make room.
Bollinger will receive $569,411 for the rest of the season as the prorated portion of the veteran minimum for a sixth-year player ($605,000). He also received a $40,000 signing bonus. He will wear No. 5, which was last worn by Clint Stoerner in 2002.
If Jefferson is not claimed, then he will be added to the Cowboys' practice squad. The Cowboys will find out today if guard James Marten was claimed after his release on Saturday. If he clears, they would like to add him to the practice squad.

Well this certainly cant be viewed as a surprise, a head scratcher for sure. I just dont see the logic in signing this guy, I dont see what this organization see's in him. i would not feel comfortable with Bollinger coming off the bench as a backup. This in my opinion isn't the upgrade backup I was looking for.
To make room Jefferson was cut, but if no one signs him, I'm sure he'll be back on the practice roster along with Marten and Bartel will be sent packing.
Update.....
bartel has been released. As I suspected, as soon as Bollinger was signed, there was no need to occupy a Practice squad roster spot on a QB. Marten's locker wasn't cleared out so He'll be resigned to the practice squad is no one signs him. Jefferson will probably make his way back to the practice squad tomorrow

And why cut Jefferson with a wounded/depleted WR corps?
head-scratcher indeed.

Stanback
With Stanback showing a little something against Cleveland I think it made the Cowboys coaches feels better about the WR corps. One of our injured WRs should be back in the next couple weeks so going into Philly with just 3 WRs when Stanback can play is ok.

Weapons galore
Stanback barely played as it was. He had two catches for 24 yards and noticed him one other time getting block to help spring Barber on a run. Felix saw very few touches and Bennett didnt get a single catch. I dont think Jefferson ever saw the field. The point is, we have so many weapons we dont really need Jefferson out there.

Good Move
I’ll take Bollinger and if Cowboys aren’t impressed with him they can always go get Bartel.
Jefferson will clear waiver.

Whatever
I’ve already expressed my opinion on the stupidity of signing Bollinger, but hopefully it won’t matter this season.

Romo
If Romo goes down like Brady did would you want Brad Johnson guiding this team every week? I know i wouldn’t. The guy can’t throw the ball deep. Hes fine if its just a finish a game type injury or maybe a week but bringing Brooks in now lets him get to know the system and hopefully we never have to use him. but if we do he has an extra week of knowledge of our system.

it wouldn't matter
just like it doesn’t matter for the Pats since their season is finished now. No way Cassel or whoever else they sign leads them to the playoffs, they’re done, finished, stick a fork in them.
We would be in the same position if we lost Romo, it wouldn’t matter who we had as a backup.

You may be right
But then again, I remember belly-laughing at Dick Vermeil on Sportscenter after Trent Green went down when he said “We’ll just have to rally around Kurt Warner”. Kurt Warner??!!!!? Isn’t that the old RB for Seattle??? Hahahahaha!!!!

I imagine most people thought the same thing when Bledsoe went down,
and Brady came in. I bet NE is real upset about that.

I got news for you guys
Matt Cassell is no Brady or Warner. He hasn’t started a game since he was a hs senior, and for good reason.

I have to believe if he starts losing games
You’ll see a vet signed ASAP, if not sooner (Culpepper to Moss rings a bell)
The Pats were lucky to pull out a win on Sunday. If they were playing a better team than the Chefs, they would have lost.

The difference is
The Pats still get to play the league’s easiest schedule. Absolute worst case scenario they go 8-8. I wouldn’t rule them out of the playofs just yet.

Would you want Bollinger leading the team?
I sure as hell wouldn’t. I would much rather have BJ back there. While old and lacking arm strength, he knows the playbook and won’t make many stupid mistakes. Bollinger won’t know the playbook, won’t have any type of chemistry or trust with his teammates and frankly, BJ has shown that he has (had?) what it takes to be a winner in the NFL while Bollinger hasn’t.

No I would want Romo
But if he got injured and I had to choose between Johnson and Bollinger I would wand Bollinger. The reason you bring him in now is so he can start learning the playbook. Yeah if Romo goes down next week he won’t know it but if Romo goes down in say week 8 he will. The inability of Johnson to stretch the field severely hampers our offense. Im not saying we would make the playoffs or anything without Romo but we would have a much better chance with Bollinger than with Johnson.

There’s a reason Bollinger couldn’t beat out a rookie in Minnesota. Anyway, it’s a moot point because if Romo goes down, we’re in trouble, just like most teams.

I'm surprised they didn't take a look at Matt Guetirrez
He outplayed Cassel in the preseason.

where is he now? NE’s practice squad?

Signing Bollinger is medium term move
If Romo were to get hurt this season at some point knock knock, BJ is gonna be the backup. He knows the plays and players. He’ll retire at the end of the seaon. Signing Bollinger is to get him ready for NEXT season, not THIS season. And signing another rookie or 2nd year guy to develop long term will happen in the off season. At least that’s how I see things shaking out.

That being said
Still iffy has to why it is they like Bollinger. Would have preferred Harrington myself.

I’m like everyone else, don’t understand the selection of Bollinger to be the guy chosen to take over from Brad next year as Romo’s backup. I just have to trust that Garrett knows what he’s doing.

WB3 is right on the money......Bollinger was brought in here to be BJ's replacement NEXT year....
He will learn the entire system, and pick Romo’s, BJ’s(a friend of his, and former back up to him), Garrett’s, and Wade Wilson’s brain all season and step in next year as our #2 NEXT year, as I am sure BJ’s thinking this is his last hurray…hopefully leaves with his second SB ring……..We’ll either bring back Bartel next season, or draft or sign a free agent young player to groom as our #3…….As much as I don’t really care for Bollinger’s playing history, He’s an upgrade over Bartel and still fairly young…and most of all, he’ll be a relatively inexpensive back up for years to come here….I hope he’s progressed over the years (admittedly I haven’t seen him play in a few years, besides that preseason game against us) ….when it comes to top back up QB’s….they’re really isn’t but a handful that are much better anyhow, and the better ones would surely command more money, and not be a long term answer if they’re looking to regain a starting spot elsewhere…….I say…..gotta go with it….Good Luck Brooks…hopefully you’ll never see the field….lol

Good 3rd string pickup
He signed for the prorated veteran minimum. He is better than Simms or Ratay (I’ve yet to see a cogent argument based on actual stats that he isn’t). And he is relatively young.
The only downside I see is losing a spot on the 53-man roster. If Romo and BJ go down, we probably would write the year off and pick somebody up off the street anyway so I’m not so sure what the insurance policy buys us.
