Playoff games open thread

In the first of today's games the New York Giants host the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC East showdown. Choosing who to root for presents a little bit of a dilemma for me, but given the fun of taunting Eagles fans over their zero Super Bowl wins and the fact I'm still bitter over the 44-6 smackdown they put on us, I'm going with the Giants. In the late game, the San Diego Chargers visit the Pittsburgh Steelers. For no real reason at all, I'm going to cheer for the Chargers.

This is an open thread for both playoff games.

Donovan will find out what happens when you have a tie in the playoffs…

I am rooting for the Giants

so I can see sulky McNabb on the sidelines, instead of life of the party phony McNabb.

I have always hated the Giants, but with a grudging respect. The Eagles are like those mangy cousins we all have who you don’t want to show up at family events. Second rate fans, franchise, etc.

I think it's a bird year.

But I’ve predicted just about everything wrong so far in these playoffs.

George Teague did it all.

Predictions, anyone?

Eagles 21
Giants 17

Look familiar?

George Teague did it all.

I predict the earth will open up and swallow both teams

The NFL will then call on Dallas to represent the NFC East in the NFC conference championship.

well, he's supposed to be such a great bus driver

and clutch qb, he’s not supposed to throw picks in big games, right?

by Terry on Jan 11, 2009 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

Is any QB supposed to throw picks in big games?

Although you wholeheartedly endorsed Collins’ pick yesterday as being your style of aggressive quarterbacking.

You still have to answer the whole fact and opinion debate in the other thread. Don’t forget about that.

by I_miss_Switzer on Jan 11, 2009 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

don't know which comment you're refering to in the other thread

BTW, I didn’t endorse the pick, just said the pick didn’t end up hurting the Titans. The fumbles by the backs and TE are reasons the Titans lost the game.

eagles fans have an absolute disgust for the Cowboys. I think they hate us more than they like their own team.

by bryangene on Jan 11, 2009 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

and it drives them nuts

that we are their #1 rival, and they are #3 at best for us.

by I_miss_Switzer on Jan 11, 2009 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

yep

eagles and redskins hate us both more than they like their own team
when the redskins would lose or didn’t make the playoffs they relished the fact that they lost as well and we didn’t make it either
i mean i told them 9-7 > 8-8 and we had insane injuries
yet they respond with “we know we suck, you guys think you’re good” yet a few weeks ago skins fans though campbell was better than romo and they were getting a superbowl
haha…its sad…we have so many rivals it seems that we just don’t care anymore
i wish we would a little bit more though..we always play like crap against the redskins and are inconsistent against the eagles
we’re also rivals with the steelers and the 49ers..its alot of teams to hate..plus everyone that plays us always wants to give their best to defeat the big bad cowboys

Eagles blitz

Giants look a little better prepared than Dallas was, to my eye.

by I_miss_Switzer on Jan 11, 2009 1:05 PM CST reply actions

It looks like

The Eagles are just running basic stuff right now, nothing off the corner, or safeties.

by joey7289 on Jan 11, 2009 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

The Eagles are playing run first...

and forcing Manning to beat them. Against Dallas, the Eagles sold out against the pass and Dallas never made them pay with the run game. Then Dallas was down too much to do anything but pass.

by I_miss_Switzer on Jan 11, 2009 1:16 PM CST reply actions

This is just like yesterday's Titans-Ravens game

The Eagles have about 30 yards of total offense, yet have the lead, because the #1 seed is turning the ball over and missing field goals.

by Rafael Vela on Jan 11, 2009 1:17 PM CST reply actions

Only difference

The Eagles

Are going to blitz different in the second half.

by joey7289 on Jan 11, 2009 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

Sure,

but I think the Giants can endure that – they just generally impress as a well drilled and well prepared team. Maybe I just have that impression because they don’t run the 12 men in the huddle and illegal shift plays as much as we do.

by thebigham on Jan 11, 2009 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

while i agree

i feel as though winning a super bowl these last 4 years holds a lot less value than before free agency/scheduling took its toll. Especially if we’re gonna determine which qbs are great and which aren’t by playoff wins. Eli manning has played around average football his last 6 playoff games(including today), and hes 4-1 so far in them.

however, if all four top teams go down this week, after a team playing in the wild card round has won the superbowl the last 3 years…i think it may be time to change the playoffs. It really seems to me that the bye is a disadvantage for top seeds.

by foyesboys on Jan 11, 2009 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

what ?

seriously?
dude no way.

And only the foolish base how great a qb is by his playoff record.. its a team sport. As always ill point to marino great qb who won 0 rings and TB who won 4 rings but is never in the discussion for top 10 qbs Theres a reason why lynn swann has a great highlight tape TB couldnt throw it accurately

by joey7289 on Jan 11, 2009 1:36 PM CST reply actions

How looney would this be:

Eagles hold and San Diego wins means:

The top three seeds in both conferences are out.
The team with the best record, 11-5 Baltimore is actually the lowest seed remaining
in the field, even though the three other surivors all would have 8 or 9 wins.

i hate the eagles more than i hate the giants and i hate how everyone just suddenly jumped onto the eagles bandwagon
even when i hate the giants i still respect them for being a good team
the eagles in my opinion are still slightly above average
they have a good defense, and brian westbrook..even when they raped us, we gave them that game
170 pass yards and 50 rush yards on offense usually doesnt garner 44 points but we imploded along with their defensive resurrection

I agree Jim

TR seems to be a little chunky some places, and, DB had a much cuter butt, but I’d still take TR over DB any day of the week.

Please know that those three ‘mantras’ come from Tex…and I just like to display them for their brilliance every now and then. I can take ne credit for noticing Tony’s butt, I think his GF is hot and that wasn’t a beret he was wearing. I don’t know what it’s called, but from Tex’s suite in the unbuilt stadium, it probably looked like a beret.

I'm hoping the Iggles win..

there’s a really obnoxious fan who comes on here and talks smack. Besides, if the all the top seeds get beat and never even make it to the big show, we can change the name from Super Bowl, to Toilet bowl.

Then have the Iggles lose in the Toilet Bowl…it would be so cruel…like letting a man dying of thirst crawl to the edge of the oasis…then move the oasis!

A pig in a tuxedo

… is still a pig.

Losing every other game during the regular season, but being in a crappy division and getting into the playoffs is more luck than anything. Having that luck extended and prevailing over a better team, is simply more luck.

It's fine the way it is...

..sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. It just doesn’t make you Super (in my opinion).

That’s why I said it would be better to call it the Toilet Bowl. Now, I don’t have a any skin in this game so I don’t really have strong feelings…but the assumption is that the Super Bowl Champ is the ‘best team’ in football, and I think that is not always true. Like last year..the Giants were not a better team than the Pats. I’m glad the Pats got beat. But if those two teams played in a 10 game series, and you bet your house on the Giants, I think you’d be homeless right now.

How can he not be? MVP, super bowl MVp’s, still getting it done..

If he gets there he would have more super bowl appearances then Peyton and Favre. As of right now he has more then Peyton and as many as Favre

by Wmillion on Jan 11, 2009 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe...

I’ve been questioning that too.

He has a super bowl ring, 2 MVPS, and might have another shot. I think he’s severely overrated.

how?

by Wmillion on Jan 11, 2009 3:41 PM CST up reply actions

agreed

when teams provide warner with just a decent amount of time, his accuracy and timing with the wrs is great and he can really put up points on the board.

by foyesboys on Jan 11, 2009 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

Actually he's a cautionary tale for where Romo's career might be headed.

His career went down the crapper in his 4th season as a starter and up until the 2nd half of last season he’s been a turnover machine more than anything else.

by MadMick on Jan 11, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

Not real comparable....

Warner was old when he was with the Rams already.

He had a better team around him then Romo did when he was with the Rams.

by AirforceBat on Jan 11, 2009 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

He was about two years older than Romo.

I’ll certainly agree about the better team part. My point was more along the lines of Warner’s turnovers increasing until they finally spiralled out of control to the point where the turnovers way outnumbered the positive plays. Even in ‘01, Warner had 26 turnovers. From ’02-’06 Warner had 27 TD passes and 48 turnovers.

So this cat got off to a red hot start his first three seasons, blew his next four seasons, and looks ready to finish his career at the top. That sounds a little too up-and-down to be a Hall Of Famer to me.

by MadMick on Jan 11, 2009 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

its possible

thats a concern of mine, and why i think we need to bring in a qb coach who will get on romo’s case when
