Your thoughts on MB3>?
I know Marion Barber is a good rb, a short yardage beast, a good blocking RB, with good hands, and will be a Cowboy for years to come, but after watching him last year I am not as impressed as have been in years past. So, I decided since we have 9 months until meaningful cowboy football will be played, to make a list of RB’s I rank ahead of Marion Barber and would trade Marion straight across for.
- 1.Adrian Peterson
- 2.Michael Turner
- 3.DeAngelo Williams
- 4.Brian Westbrook
- 5.Matt Forte
- 6.B. Jacobs
- 7.M. Lynch
- 8.S. Jackson
- 9.F. Gore
- 10.C. Portis
- 11.R. Brown
- 12.J. Stewart
- 13.MJD
I rate MB3 as a top 15 RB, above average. Your thoughts?

i dont want to trade mb3
but i think he proved this year he cant go the entire team
he can play the entire game, but not as effectively as when having someone else spell him
the last memories in our heads of marion were 0 yard gains and dislocated toes
but watch his play from last year and from the beginning of this year and he was tearing defenses up
i think next year with felix and choice in there giving barber alot more rest and longevity for the season we will see a much better marion barber. he’s great as the closer in the 4th and a great 4th and 1 and short yardage back. We saw this season that even on 3rd and 4th and 1 we didnt run it down their throats because we weren’t confident in marion’s health and tried running with deon (great blocker, not so great runner) or passing it and turning it over on downs
I actually want to see Barber start, then put Choice in and Felix in time to time to see if he can bust a big run. Maybe even put all 3 or atleast 2 of them out there at once
then alternate choice and felix and let barber close out.

My question
In the 1st quarter when D’s are stacking the line to stop the run(very little wiggle room) who do you want running the football-Barber or Choice?

Kinda like the #1 defense in football did that night in Heinz field?
Not saying I’d want Choice over Barber, but don’t so easily assume he would do worse when he proved otherwise against some of the best defenses in the league.

choice did some impressive work against the TOP Ds
And that was going into and through game as a 3rd back… i hope barbers job isnt secured and they give choice a chance at starting…..
Felix should be the do it all guy like bush
Choice should be 1st half start
Barber 2nd half starter
how bout it?

see after watching choice
rip off 5 yards a carry vs some of the best D’s in the NFL I would like see what he could do as a starter. This team is notorious for its slow starts. We need to start the running back that can get us off to the fastest start. Marion is valuable and fresh Mb3 is a good thing

yea
we have the bruiser in barber
we have speedy guy in felix, he can do alot like darren sproles does for the chargers
and we have choice who imo can be an every down back if need be
he’s like clinton portis (hopefully not injury prone) in that he wont rip off a 60 yd td, but he’ll get a good amount of 20 yard gains

why pay Barber 7 million per season to be a part timer ?
Jerry’s biggest mistake this past season was paying MBIII too early, before he had to prove he’s worth that money, and before he got a chance to see his prized rookies…IF MBIII had only signed his tender, and was a FA this season. I am sure he would be gone, or signed for alot less. Jerry once again got caught up in the highlight hype.
I would roll with Choice and Jones, and trade MBIII for a first rounder if possible. This is a weak RB draft, and Barber would be worthy of a 1st rounder from a team in need of a power runner, alas Arizona, Seattle, NO, GB, NE, Houston, and Detroit to name a few.
by CowboysRnumba1 on Jan 13, 2009 10:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
hey my concern isn't the salaries
I leave that to Jerry, I just want us to win.. I think Marion will help us win ball games. He is automatic from 5 yds in.. You can’t put a price tag on scoring in the red zone.
I wouldn’t trade a 1st rounder for Marion, especially after all of the rookie backs that performed that weren’t 1st round picks last year. Even the RB’s in 1st were cheaper then Marion.

7 million per season to be a part timer...
so be it… we need to worry less about numbers with commas and more about numbers with meaning (ie victories)
choice should be carrying the load… 18-22 ish touches per game (including 3rd and 1’s)
felix jones change of pace, kickoff return, slot, anywhere… 10-12 touches per game
marion barber = goal line, 4th quarter closer…. 10-12 touches per game
by CowboysFan4Life on Jan 14, 2009 2:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
well, there you go. why bother keeping MBIII for 10-12 touches per game ?
especially since Choice has proven he can excel against the best defenses in the league that he can carry the load, and get the tough yardage.

What if he gets injured?
Running bakcs do that you know. Why would we give up depth at a position when we dont have to?

get injured ? well, to be honest Felix Jones is the best RB on the team anyhow.
and if we were to draft another RB in this years draft, or sign a vet FA (Lamont Jordan, Sammy Morris, Rudi Johnson) for vet low minimum, we would not lose a beat without MBIII. It’s very simple.
As Louie clearly stated in his comment. paying that much for Barber has handcuffed us into keeping him regardless, but if Jerry had just paid the tender amount, like he did with Canty. MBIII would not be considered a long term need at RB, with the emergence of Choice and Jones, and more than likely, wouldn’t have been resigned, or shouldn’t have been resigned. too late now though.
by CowboysRnumba1 on Jan 14, 2009 9:32 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If we had any of those vet FAs they could not match the production of a healthy MB3
You might have forgotten how good Marion is, and right now he is still better than Felix Jones, who has only played 7 games. You cant call him the best bakc on our team until he plays more and proves himself.
"Ask Philly was it hard tryin' a stop TO, he da main reason that the fans would come fo'."
by aussie_cowboy on Jan 14, 2009 9:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
umm, Choice has already exceeded MBIII's production.
ang yes, Having followed Felix Jones and MBIII for three years now, I can say with much conviction that Felix Jones is far more talented than MBIII.
There is a reason one was a first rounder and the other a fourth rounder.
btw, the random vet’s I listed would be third string RB’s, as Choice would match MBII’s output easily, and Felix would be our Brian Westbrook.

i have come to appreciate the depth we have...
unless we can get multiple early round picks(ie. a first, or a couple 2nds and thirds…) i think we should keep mb3 jjust to close out games… he is a force, and rb depth is crucial… but since we have multiple needs, the picks are more valuable as of right now… but he is a proven back and i love that we have him

Barber’s problems began when Jones got hurt. Jones had that speed burst that kept defenses guessing. Choice is a good running back but him and Barber are the same type of running back. If Jones is healthy than Barber should have a good season next year.

Hmm...
How many years does Westbrook have in him? I don’t think I’d do a MB3 for Westbrook trade.
If i could get a slew of picks for the guy, I’d consider it, otherwise, Adrian Peterson would be the only back I’d consider doing a player for player trade, and AP>>>>>>MB3, so that ain’t happening.
by the red scare on Jan 13, 2009 8:24 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
most people willo mistake MB3s play
with him being the focus. I think our offensive line play suffered this year and the result was in the poor running attack, specially during the three games that Johnson was the QB and teams stacked the line. I think the age of having a single RB is almost over. teams are finding that they can have different type of RBs run the same formations and plays and plug in a different RB and create a different problem for defenses. Giants, Miami, Carolina, and to a point SD all had multiple running back attacks and found consistant success. Its rare to have LT who is now getting injured often or an AD.
but having a good OL is critical and this year our left side…was bad

I agree
I am little puzzled, by Marion’s low YPC. He just isn’t fast through the hole. Choice’s exhilaration help makes up for his lack of speed.. Marion lacks exhilaration and top end speed.

Don't forget the three games Barber played without Romo in the lineup
And the games he didn’t get many carries because of his injured toe.
Mix in games against the toughest run defenses and that’s enough to lower your ypc in a hurry.

So you take the 1st 6 games with Romo Marion had 2 games with 5+ yds per carry and 4 with less then 4. Last year when healthy he rushed for less then 4, then more then 4.

sorry, i should've been more specific on the point of my comment, W.
i was just saying that those were possible factors in MB3’s low ypc.
personally, i’d love for our O to employ a similar scheme as the G-Men’s Earth, Wind, and Fire running game.
as many have already said, Barber would be our earth, Choice would be our wind, and F. Jones would be our fire.
except, maybe we’d use F. Jones a lot more on passing plays… maybe in motion or lined up in the slot — just to befuddle opposing defense with creatively unexpected formations.

+1 Wm acceleration through the hole is MBIII weak point, but it's also the number one prerequisite for an NFL back.
Barber does well on his off tackle plays because they take time to develope, he is not a north-south power runner. He does his damage outside against DB’s.
That’s why I loved Felix Jones, his 10 yard split times were tops at the combine, making those slower 40 times irrelevant. Holes close very quickly, and Barber can’t get there quick enough, hence the 0 or – 2 yard running plays we got so accustom to seeing this past year. His 3.8 yards per carry average was not fluke.

i agree, im looking forward to see how we deploy our stable...
i honestly think choice should get the start… and not only because he seems to start out fast… also because
a. he seems extremely valuable in the pass game (and therefore the run game, opening up the run throughout the game)
b. i’d like to see mb3 come in fresh in the 3rd and 4th to just straight up punish a tired defense…
and if felix jones goes a single game next year without at least 5 carries, i’ll be upset
by CowboysFan4Life on Jan 14, 2009 3:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
but we knew that day 1
that’s why during last year’s off season. I wanted us to go after Turner because he and barber are same size, physical runners but Turner is got speed. Barber is got better hands and is a better blocker. plus he as a known quantity to the team.
when the offense clicks, barber is at his best and can punish a defense and carry a team. our offense was out of sync most of the year.

for the same reason I said above
same formations. same plays. different running back. different problems. Pittsburgh hadn’t really seen Choice. He was an unkown even to the cowboys. Plus he did make a couple of big plays (50 yard catch and 23 yard run) that made up bulk of his yards. tough to get consistent against a good defense.

There is no reason to rank any of these RBs in order
Each of them can play a very important role in different stages of the game. And our ivy-league O Coordinator needs to realize this. Let the situation determine the tailback that needs to be in the game.
Everybody on BTB can see that we need to use a good bit of Felix throughout the game to keep defenses honest. Everyone here can see that MBIII is great closing the game and in short yardage, 2-minute drills, or just when the offense is rolling, he is unstoppable. Everyone realizes that Choice is a great all-purpose back, and he is most suitable to start the game and give our offense a spark when we get in a rut.
Can the coaches see this?

I'd take Choice over MB3 Right Now
Barber has gone through five NFL seasons. His running style, while entertaining, punishes him more that anyone else. I believe people overrate MB3 because his style is so entertaining. He is a nice, solid NFL running back if I ranked them he would fall somewhere in the 7-20 range, though I don’t see much difference at all between all these nice, solid running backs. He is not a true difference maker. It was a major mistake to sign him to that 7-year deal.
Choice has very little wear and tear on his treads. He looks for all the world like a nice solid NFL running back, just like MB3. He is 5 years younger and comes at about 5% of MB3’s price tag. I would choose Choice right now. In two years, this will be very apparent as MB3’s inevitable decline starts (I believe it already has started but I’m sure most don’t agree). For those who think it is a good thing to trade MB3, note that (1) his contract prohibits it due to the acceleration of his signing bonus and (2) it is very unlikely, though possible that someone would give up a #1 for him. The lesson has been clear for ten or so years now: don’t sign running backs to a second contract. It is very likely to backfire on you within just a few years, if not the first year. Shaun Alexander, Larry Johnson, LT: those guys are the rule and the exceptions are rare. Beat them up for five seasons and move on with new guys. This is even truer now in the age of running back by committee.
Dayz, I have to disagree on the wife analogy. You want to keep your wife for life because with women, certain things get better with age and long-term commitment. After five years, nothing gets better with running backs – they just get way more expensive.

All of these “This person underperforms so I say we trade them” posts…Man, our entire team underperformed! We had a piss-poor season. You can’t pick out one person and be like Oh well, he sucks now. He’s gone. This was MB3’s first season as a starter and we can all admit that he was utilized very poorly. Let’s give our team (our whole TEAM) another crack next year. I think with a few little tweaks here and there (safety, oline, LB’s), we’re right back in Super Bowl contention.
