Cowboys fire defensive coordinator Brian Stewart

Things are definitely changing out at Valley Ranch. First, reports that OC Jason Garrett might be on his way to being the next head coach in St. Louis surfaced. Now, on a Friday afternoon out of nowhere, the Cowboys fired DC Brian Stewart.

The Cowboys made a bombshell announcement this afternoon. The team has released defensive coordinator Brian Stewart. He spent two years on the staff and was widely viewed as Wade Phillips' right-hand man.

What's the theory here? Is it just a straight-up firing of a guy who lost command of the defense and had some of his responsibilities taken away mid-season? Or is there something bigger afoot out at the Ranch?

Hat tip to Masada for his FanPost.

Not sure what but there sure is alot of changing of the guards goin on. Although this firing doesn’t particularly surprise me it does make you wonder, the timing of it. Whu wasn’t this done a week ago?

Houck

If under performance is in the equation….Hudson Houck should be nervous. He has not demonstrated that he is an ungrade.

So should Campo, he did have some injuries

but I think the rooks played well because of Wade not Campo

by rocj55 on Jan 16, 2009 7:13 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmm

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but what’s your basis for thinking Wade’s approach got so much out of young corners, but nothing out of our young O-Linemen (Proctor, McQuistan, Free…with Flo’s injuries this year, McQ could have been mediocre and come in. Clearly he wasn’t. Since Wade is defensively minded…why didn’t Spencer, Carpenter and Burnett play better?

I’m not saying it’s impossible Wade made the corners play well, but I think you’ve at least got to consider that Campo did a damn good job. Considering the injuries (and suspension) the secondary took this year, I just have to give Campo some credit.

Campo

Huh?

Campo was the best assistant on the staff last year.

by Rafael Vela on Jan 16, 2009 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

Personally I think Herring was the best Assistant this past year

D-Ware had a career year, B-James finally showed his potential, Zach Thomas 94 tackles playing out of position. Ellis 8 sacks on spot duty. Secondary only had 7 ints to last years 19 ints. You can say scheme but doesn’t playing zone (looking at the Qb) suppose to give you a better chance to play the ball. Just saying………………….

by rocj55 on Jan 16, 2009 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

Wades D in S.D. had similar numbers for the front 7(maybe better didnt check) but not his DBs.

Is it because of better talent here or Campo. Not taking anything from Herring but Wades done the same without him.

by squidlo97 on Jan 17, 2009 10:36 AM CST up reply actions

I dont have the piss and vinegar for Stewart like many on here have.

Every new head coach in the world brings along some of his guys(players/coaches) to help him institute their system. Brian was a good position coach that help alot of these guys get up to task faster. Unfortunately, the dude didnt have the savvy to call a good game. maybe he didnt like the demotion or he was just part of the house cleaning. Fortunately, I think our guys are up to speed on Wades D and we might have a dominant D next year capable of carrying us if needed. Just run the ball or at least control the clock a little better and get our punter back for field postion and we may be feasting on QBs at a record rate next year.

by squidlo97 on Jan 16, 2009 6:29 PM CST reply actions

Wonder what Stewie will do next year

It has to be embarrassing to be relieved of one’s playcalling duties mid-season. I wonder if he will get another opportunity as a DC or if somebody will hire him as a DB’s coach somewhere.

by JimmyJohnson on Jan 16, 2009 6:54 PM CST up reply actions

Sean Peyton went through that at NY w/the Giants (on offense)

and still got hired as a head coach.

Maybe someone will give him a chance as a posistion coach and he’ll get another shot someday.

I don’t care, though-goodbye, dude.

The St. Louis game is why we're not in the playoffs

I can understand losing to the Steelers, Ravens, and Eagles, but losing to the Rams was inexcusable. If we won that game, we’d be 10-6, or better, and maybe in the playoffs.

by ym on Jan 16, 2009 6:36 PM CST reply actions

Understand your comments about losing to Rams

But the Eagles game was a total meltdown; gutless performance by a group of total losers. No explanation can be offered for this past season other than the current Cowboys are losers.

Hear, hear!

Sorry for Stewart but this is GREAT news for Dallas and for Wade. Get someone who can actually help lighten Wade’s load next year.

As for Garrett, after the T.O. power game plays apparently going on, might be just as well if he goes bye-byes. I like him, but not sure all the players feel the same way.

by PaulFVillarreal on Jan 16, 2009 6:51 PM CST up reply actions

Good point

My point is that Wade needs a guy who can help lighten his load, help to get things done so that Wade can spend more time as HC and less time as DC. I’m great with Wade calling the D, but just want him to have to do less preparation or whatever on just that part of the gameplan. Stewart did not seem to be helping in this way at all, so hopefully the next guy can. We just don’t want Wade to have to come ‘save’ the next DC next year, is where I’m coming from.

by PaulFVillarreal on Jan 16, 2009 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

You said above...

…that Stewart was great behind the scenes working as a position coach. Then, maybe the problem was just playcalling. Whatever it was, the D just seemed overmatched and dispirited until Wade started making the calls. I’m not sure if that is just playcalling or not, I don’t know. But Stewart did not seem to be getting the job done. I don’t dislike him, just want what’s best for the team. Let’s hope this is the right move.

by PaulFVillarreal on Jan 16, 2009 7:05 PM CST up reply actions

You still need DC

"Protect the Romo, Save the Cowboys!!"

by Wmillion on Jan 16, 2009 7:18 PM CST up reply actions

Why..

would a defensive genius like Buddy Ryan have a guy like Wade as DC to call plays? Buddy and Wade moved to the next level.

There are other very bright DC qualified coaches out there who can work within Wade’s system, but also bring in some of his own spin. It wasn’t Stewart.

Stewart’s Cowboy experience will give him opportunities…most likely as a secondary coach, where he may develop into a DC in time. I wish him well.

This is a positive move for the team, I’m excited to see who the next DC is. Now, in my opinion, it doesn’t have to be a known quantity, new stars are developed all the time.

Did anyone else see that Gruden is now available?

It’s interesting that Shanahan and now Gruden, two Super Bowl winning coaches, are now on the market. I’m not saying we should re-examine Wade, but there are some quality guys unemployed right now.

by desus32 on Jan 16, 2009 6:43 PM CST reply actions

Gruden is overrated

He won the superbowl with Dungy’s scheme and players. He hasn’t done anything since. He’s supposed to be an offensive guy but his offense has been in the bottom half of the league since Keyshawn left.

Not only that...

He’s an idiot. He has a QB problem so he keeps what… 5 below-par QB’s on the roster just in case… Doesn’t sound like much of a genius to me.

Tex 4 Garrett

This clears the way for the Wade Phillips’ departure should the great Jason Garrett be offered the St. Louis job. Garrett is the Golden Child in Jerry’s eyes (Tex’s too) and could line up Dom Capers to run the defense with one call. Amen, Amen, Amen.

by NICK L on Jan 16, 2009 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

What would that solve except to create another couple roster holes to fill.

Last time I checked he is the Cowboys primary punt returner (that might change, but for now he is) and he’s not bad. He’s not a threat to take it to the house, but I’ll take a guy who is solid fielding punts and making about 10 yds a return with Dallas’ offense.

He’s also a solid 3rd or 4th WR, with 2 guys in front of him who have trouble staying healthy and another who turns 36 next season.

BStew

The beleaguered Brian Stewart will never sniff a Coordinator’s job again.

by Montecito Tex on Jan 16, 2009 6:56 PM CST reply actions

Possible Wade Demotion?

I’m basing this on hope alone, but is there anyone you would rather have calling the defensive plays?

Squidlo points out that Stewart’s real weakness came in playcalling. How likely is it that Stewart’s replacement will call plays? I’m guessing that if you include Wade in the group of coaches available to call defensive plays in Dallas, he’s probably the best man for the job.

So…Wade’s the guy we want calling defensive plays next year. If Stewart is the DC, Wade calls the Defensive plays. Whoever replaces Stewart will probably not be as good a defensive play caller as Wade and will thus not provide an upgrade over Stewart.

Of the few people out there who I’d rather have calling defensive plays for the Cowboys, most are under contract with other teams and there’s absolutely no shot Cowher comes in to be a Coordinator.

Jerry’s plan and promise to provide continuity has failed, so why not go all out?

If Garrett leaves, we have a head coach who is a great D-Coordinator and nothing holes at the coordinator spots. Like I said, I don’t think there’s a better D-Coordinator available than Wade.

Moving Wade to D Coordinator gives one side of the ball some continuity-the side we want to have continuity. The Defense was very good after Wade took over and it would be nice to continue that. The Offense, on the other hand, needs some serious reconstruction (beginning with Houck, I agree!).

With the decent offensively minded head coaching candidates around the league, it may be the way to go?

How’s Shanahan an HC, Wade at DC and someone Shanahan likes (or someone who can fix the line problems at OC.

Just for fun…Assuming Wade is the DC next year, who do you all want at HC and OC?

As I understand it, Romeo Crennel said that he’s willing to take the demotion, why not Wade?

PS I understand that this scenario is not likely and may even be impossible, but I can hope right?

by NICK L on Jan 16, 2009 6:58 PM CST reply actions

How about...

HC: Shanahan or Cowher (we can dream). Holmgren?
OC: Chucky Gruden
DC: Wade

Would a pairing of Shanahan and Gruden work, philosophically? Does Denver run WCO? I think they do but can’t recall.

by PaulFVillarreal on Jan 16, 2009 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

Imagine how good the D could be...

…if Wade just focused on it and not being HC. Chargers of a few years ago all over again.

I would love Chucky as OC just for his intensity and his working to install the West Coast. I think it might be time for Dallas to consider making that move.

He would also run a real training camp – where players complain to the Union that they are being abused. That is the kind of HC dallas needs.

The Best Three Words in the English Language

Brian Stewart FIRED!

This is a glorious day for everyone who was promoted for doing a stellar job. A glorious day for those who worked hard and who were promoted for the right reasons – not for running one of the five worst secondary units for three straight years. Not for being the only warm body (who knew a "system") available. BStew was the most un-qualified Coordinator in the National Football League and should have been let go earlier this year in the ’Nard, per Tex.

PS: The difference between failure and a championship the last two years is the difference between Brian Stewart and Steve Spanuolo/ Jim Johnson.
