Any Chance At Peppers?
Do the Cowboys have any chance at being able to afford Peppers to replace Canty/Spears?
He has asked the Panthers to release/not franchise him.
"The front office has been informed of my desire to explore opportunities with other NFL teams following the expiration of my contract next month," Peppers said in a statement released by his agent Carl Carey. "At this point in my NFL career, I am seeking new challenges that will allow me to grow, develop and reach my personal potential on the football field.
Peppers and Ware would be mighty scary.

Peppers and Ware only make sense
if Dallas is going to a 4-3.
And Dallas hasn’t signed Ware to an extension. Why would they chase a big ticket like Peppers before they locked their guy up?

Peppers IS a 3-4 DE
He’s 6’ 7" 290lbs . I don’t even want to hear he can’t play DE in a 3-4
Same size as Trevor Pryce, considered one of the best 3-4 DE’s in the league.
Not saying it would happen. But if Jerry and Stephen did some manuvering, it can happen.

Peppers can't play DE in a 3-4

sorry your misinformed.
Peepers is not just a pass rusher, he’s equally great at stopping the run as well, and he even drops back in zone coverage at times. If 7th rounder Ratliff can play undersized at NT, what makes anyone think the best D lineman in the league can’t play DE. He’s better than 3-4 DE’s Richard Seymour and Trevor Pryce. But i’m not going to get in a pissing match over ones opinions. I doubt he’s coming here anyhow.

Actually...
…Peppers could be a hypbrid DE/OLB — especially in the 3-4, which is what he prefers at this stage of his NFL career. In fact, he’s publicly stated that he wants to play that kind of role — a la D-Ware and Merriman — as reported in this link.

lol...i just head the news....I was going to post on it...
Peppers would make this D invincible..
yea yea yea…we don’t got the money…..hogwash
cut:
Roy
Henry
Carp
Ellis
Those 4 salaries alone would be more than what Peppers gets
Ware and Peppers…do it Jerry.

There is absolutely ZERO chance
Peppers and Ware are about to sign the 2 richest contracts for a defensive player in NFL history. No way we can afford both.

Not for long.
We can start playing fantasy football with the roster after next year.

If I'm not mistaken,
and I very well could be, if the owners and the NFLPA don’t reach an agreement after 2010, there won’t be any football until an agreement is reached. I gathered there wouldn’t be a 2011 season that was uncapped.
by the red scare on Jan 17, 2009 5:38 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah thats right
If no agreement is reached 2010 is uncapped and there is no football after that

There will be a salary cap after 2010
This is not baseball. The owners won’t let that happen.

I agree
The uncapped season is still a pipe dream right now. Especially with the economy tanking.
I could be wrong, but I doubt smaller market team owners would let it happen.

but APerfectStar is right, teams like Buffalo and Minny wouldnt let it happen

No....No....No....
If we ran a 4-3 it would make sense. And Im not saying that Peppers can’t play in a 3-4.
Im just saying it’s the same as paying a ton of money for an option quarterback in a pass heavy offense. Peppers’ strength is as a pass rusher. Our ends rush more than other than 3-4 ends, but not enough to keep Peppers happy. And Peppers is used to using is speed and strength to run around the edge, not anchoring down and trying to push through a Tackle/guard or gaurd/center double team.

You gotta understand our scheme and the player’s strengths to see this won’t work. Great points.

No thanks.
Rushing the QB is not the problem here.. A dominate Safety or NT would do more for this team..

What is the run down on him? From what I gather he is good safety, but I don’t watch very many STL games. Anyone have any input?

I like him a whole lot.
good tackler. Doesn’t give up a lot of big plays. Wont pick off 10 balls either, but better than what we have.

I had him in FF for a while
that’s pretty good for a IDP. He’s good in pass coverage and gets a bunch of tackles.
Let’s just clean house and get him and Jim Leonard. Keep everyone else we have (unless we could save some $$$) and just have mad, talented depth at FS and SS. And Henry can be a full-time hybrid!
George Teague did it all.

Peppers would be perfect
He wants to be turned into a Ware/Merriman type of rusher. Who wouldn’t want to have Pepppers at their disposal to rush. Trade away or cut ellis, spencer, carp, burnett, james if they arent a full-time starter.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/17/peppers-wants-to-play-in-a-3-4-defense/
Not saying we have a chance at him, but I am pretty sure he’ll be playing on a 3-4 D next season.

If they are going to trade him
then we are pretty much out of the mix. We are better off going after Haynesworth. I think he would make a great 3-4 DE
by quincyyyyy on Jan 17, 2009 8:14 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Why does he want out?
"Protect the Romo, Save the Cowboys!!"
by Wmillion on Jan 17, 2009 10:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
2 things
Haynesworth is a NT, he is 330 pounds…
and about Peppers if its possible try, thats all, try. He is big enough and just think if we could get a few big guys in the middle, think of having Ratliff and Peppers at DE with Ware and Ellis/Spencer on the sides…We could hit 100 sacks
by nicholas.rodriguez on Jan 17, 2009 10:54 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
about the DT position
We can draft them, Ron Brace and the list that was provided by Quincy, we could get 3 of them and have them battle for 2 spots. then we would still have 6 picks where we could get a Safety, OL, back up QB and we are set.
by nicholas.rodriguez on Jan 17, 2009 10:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
also
if we drop the 4 players that were previously mentioned we could sign S. Jones and get a OLB in the draft and I remember a Tearrius George playing well in the preseason, we could give him a shot. Possible get back Walden from KC if they release him since he is too small to play DE in a 4-3. I think without Henry we would be better even if we kept quiet in the CB dept. Carp….well he still intrigues me, He played well in a playoff game but has been invisible, I still wonder about him. Maybe we should try and get something from him. but cutting 3 players for 1 if it still upgrades the team, which in all phases looks like it will then do it. But Jerry has to work fast, real fast to make it all happen.

LB's- George and Walden are now property of Bill Parcells in Miami..
but yes, I agree cutting 3-4 non productive overpaid players to aquire one great player is certainly a best case scenario. The combined salary of Roy, Henry, Carp, and Ellis is equal to any FA that will hit the market, and all 4 of those players can be easily replaced via trade or release, by low cost rookies or FA’s.
Just for kicks, I’ll provide the total 2008 cap value of the 4 players mentioned above. $17,890,000 I have no clue how much of a cap loss it would be to cut those 4, but I know Carp’s and Henry’s contracts wouldn’t be tough to absorb, and Ellis and Roy’s contracts would prorate recent bonuses..But I do think the net available cap space that would occur would still be over 10,000,000 to add to our current 10 mm under the cap figures. Leaving us 20mm under the cap. Make sense ?
Do you think we should be looking elsewhere ? Maybe cut all four of them and sign FA FS-Atogwe-$7,000,000/per and FA LB – Dansby – $8,000,000/per, then draft OL,NT,QB,LB,DE
I think we’d be sitting pretty come draft time when we can target the best players available, as opposed to praying that our targeted players drop to us. I think we’d be all set going into September.

you don't just get the money back by cutting them
still counts against you
by Beasticon on Jan 18, 2009 3:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
sure you do, you get their base salaries back, only their bonuses get prorated and counted against the cap, if all are released or traded.
The actual total salaries of the the 4 players listed is a combined : $13,400,000
I’m no capologist, but the way i’m looking at it:
17,890,000 Total cap cost in 2008
13,400,000 Total salaries paid in 2008
———————-
4.490,000 minimum cap savings by trading or releasing the 4 players
Assuming their salaries would actually rise in ‘09, and we wouldn’t be responsible for any roster bonuses, I see that opening up at least $10,000,00 in cap space in ’09 if none were on our roster after March 1st or whenever their roster bonuses are due. And IMO, those are 4 players we can do without, while improving out roster.
by CowboysRnumba1 on Jan 19, 2009 12:12 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
note* The bare base salary for players listed was 12,210,000
IF their ’09 salaries were to remain the same, which i doubt, and more than likely are more, we could eliminate at least that amount from next years cap.Total bonuses award to the 4 was only 2.19 mm in ’08.
Henry and Carp would be in their last year of contracts next season, and we’d absorb about 2.5 million in actual cap loss for Henry’s final bonus payment. Ellis has no bonus money to absorb, as his monies were distributed to salary raise. Roy Williams’ bonus money would likely be the most, somewhere in the 2.5-3.5 mm cap hit, i think.. So at most, we can eliminate all 4 from the roster at the cost of about 5-6 million in dead money for ‘09, but would no longer be responsible for the base salaries of 12 mm or more..In affect we are assured at least 6+ million in open salary cap space. ok, I’m done trying to figure this all out. I am sure all for have some sort of trade value, and would be beneficial to try to trade all of them, but this is all purely my speculation, and what I would do if I was running things around here, so there you have it.
