BTB: Help Wanted

As I mentioned last week, BTB is looking for some new blood on the front-page to help cover our beloved Dallas Cowboys. Rafael, Raul and I will still be here but it's time to bring some fresh perspectives to the blog. First, what we're looking for in the applicants.

  1. You have to be able to post regularly, every week, at least 4-5 times a week. At first, this might sound easy, but take it from experience, it's not. Some weeks there isn't much news and you've said just about everything you want to say. You have to be able to push through that and come up with interesting stories or opinions. It takes dedication so please make sure you are willing to commit that kind of time to the blog.
  2. You need to have some command of the English language and responsible enough to use proper spelling and grammar. Granted, this isn't exactly writing an essay to get into Harvard but we do keep some semblance of standards on the blog. I know that I make mistakes in spelling and sometimes butcher my grammar, but I try to keep it to a minimum. You need to be able to do that also.
  3. Research is required. Your posts, if they are relying on facts or stats, must be correct. Sometimes we think we remember how a game went long ago, or believe a player did this or that in recent history, but human memory is fallible. You need to look up certain things to make sure they're correct.
  4. You need to be able to take criticism of your posts and not lose your cool. Not everybody will agree with what you write and they'll let you know about it in the comments. You can argue back with your points but going ballistic on someone is not allowed. If you don't have some control over your emotions, it won't work out.
  5. This blog has some issues that we stay way from - politics, religion and other hot-button issues that are not related to football. Using this blog as a platform to go off on tangents like that is not acceptable. Also, profanity is not welcome. You must be able to stay within these guidelines to qualify for the front-page.

OK, now you have the basic outlines for the front-page. It requires dedication of time, a responsibility to make your posts factually correct and grammatically correct, and a willingness to stick with the guidelines here at BTB.

So if you're still interested there's another hurdle. You need to be an active member of the blog. By that I mean you need to be someone who regularly comments and contributes to the conversation here and has done it for a while. Don't worry BSR-transfers, I know that your contributions can only go back a couple of months but if you've been active in that time it will count just as much as guys who have been on BTB for a long time. You are part of the community on this blog and you will have just as much an opportunity to apply for the position.

What now? Anybody who is interested and thinks they meet all the criteria, send me an email that includes your real name, your blog name and some relevant data about why you should be the guy. I don't need a sample blog post at this time but just some information about you and why you think you can do the job. My email can be found down at the bottom of the blog next to my name. Please include the phrase "BTB co-blogger" in the subject line of your email so I can easily pick it out. Also, please send your email within the next few days, we want to move on this as quickly as possible.

Later this week, Rafael and I will begin sifting through the emails and narrowing down the candidates. Depending on the volume of applicants and our evaluations of those applicants, we'll either make a decision or do a semi-final round that may ask for sample posts, etc. We will be selecting at least two winners and maybe three.

This is also a good time to say thanks to all of you who read the blog and a special thanks to all of you that comment regularly. It's because of you this blog is a success. We are truly grateful.

Thanks,

Dave (and on behalf of Rafael, too)

You beat me to it.

I was going to suggest the same thing. His posts would generate many comments and would all be themed about how Tony Romo will never lead us to the promised land.

The pear shaped QB

will never allow the Red Jesus to lead his brilliant offense to his full glory. Plus Garrett picks up better women and is a better golfer.

We can only hope.

Damn!

I was gonna apply on the basis of writing about abortion, politics, gay marriage, and the death penalty.
In allseriousness, people this is a big responsibility. I applied during the first wave *about a year ago, by my recollection) under my previous heading, Or Moyal. I thought I could handle the job, but lost out to TH and Brandon. And truth be told, my posting has declined substantially over time.
Don’t take your time for granted. This is a big job. Best of luck to all applicants, though.

Kanye, you want to be the voice of this generation? Get in line! It goes me, Obamagirl, the Freecreditreport.com guys, then It's a tie between you-and Crocs.

is Tuna helper going somewhere as well?

by cowboy78 on Jan 19, 2009 12:47 PM CST reply actions

When I first brought on TH and Brandon

The idea was they weren’t permanent and that BTB would bring on new voices every so often. So with Brandon’s departure I decided this would be a good time to make that change. TH will still be around to do occasional guest-posting whenever he wants, but we want to take on some new co-bloggers.

by Dave Halprin on Jan 19, 2009 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

Tuna was more than worthy to keep on regularly, very entertaining and thoroughly reseached content.

I would love to help out with FA and the draft coming up, but Grizz and everyone else know I couldn’t live up to prerequisite #4. Not a chance. Like TO, I’ll just take the role of villian, and be happy.

I will recommend one blogger that is respected, and very knowledgeable of the game and Dallas Cowboys, and usually provides well thought out, and insightful commentary.:

CowboyLouie

If he wants the added burden, I have no idea, but if he applies, It would be foolish to overlook the quality contribution he may bring to the site.

Others I’ve noticed have a a decent grasp of the team, and do an alright job of commenting, even if I sometimes disagree with them:
Jim Vance-articulate way of expressing things.
GloryDayz88- Has more recommended posts than anyone on this site.

ok ok ok..more recommendations——————.these are only jokes fellas. be easy.

Terry- If we need any TMZ style reporting on pretty boy Romo.
Deke- If we want to wallow in a depressive state, drinking whiskey and singing the blues.
5Blings-If Deke’s negative commentary doesn’t have you jumping off the rooftops, Blings sure will.
Boyzfan94- If you like unsubstantiated facts without creditable resources.
Wmillion- If you want continued TO hating posting material, or rallying crys for Garretts supporters.
ME- If you want some know it all pompous ass that thinks his opinion is the only option.

sift through those canidates.

Like, the way people think I’m overly positive.

I just think he’s more skeptical than anything.

by AirforceBat on Jan 19, 2009 3:36 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks for the plug, but....

I’m not inserting myself into the mix of consideration for being a front-page guy. I am blessed with a wonderful little boy who is 2.5 yrs old and a wonderful girl who is just seven months old. Much of my free time is spent changing diapers and exchanging hugs. I am also saddled as the CFO of a company going through some very difficult financial times right now. This blog is a wonderful diversion for me. I would hate to replace that with an obligation.

I have such respect for Grizz and the front-page guys. It really is a time-consuming, ultra-low-paying job. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to continually come up with fresh, new material and then take the necessary time to compose. As long as we are talking issues related to this about this blog, a few other thoughts:

I’d really like to see a designated meeting place set-up at a watering hole before every Cowboys game. I have to believe many of us travel once or more to a Dallas game each season. It sure would be fun to meet up and match faces with names. The tone of the posts might turn a bit more positive as well. Maybe one of the new guys can set that up.

Speaking of new guys, maybe Grizz can select a woman as one of the new front-page writers?

I hope GloryDayz applies. He has my vote.

I’m a Giants fan who would like to criticize the Cowboys and glorify the Giants in a very partisan gung-ho fashion. I would like to be super critical of Jerry Jones, and Wade Phillips, and Roy Williams, and Tony Romo, and Andre Gurode, and Patrick Crayton… oh yes, and Team Obliterator Owens.
Please accept my resume.

The biggest challenge is coming up with topics.

This blog is so much more active than most teams’ blogs, that almost everything gets discussed, analyzed, and broken down as soon as anything happens.

I'm not being serious, but...

Wasn’t Dan Reeves a player/coach for the Cowboys? Or was it Ditka?

Ray-Ray would kill 2 birds with 1 stone – Inside Linebacker/DC

But seriously, I don’t think his play justifies what we would have to pay him. But he absolutely sets the right tone in the locker room and won’t take some of the B.S. from our players that our coaches tolerate. I’m all for signing him even if he is an average – below average ILB by the end of his contract.

by JimmyJohnson on Jan 19, 2009 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

That's assuming...

Ray Ray doesn’t die of an aneurism when he sees film of Mike Jenkins not sticking his nose in to make an easy tackle.

I’m with you guys. Generally, I hate taking an aging superstar whenever we have a position of need. But Ray Lewis will bring accountability and intensity to the team even if his play slips.

lol..love the Jenkins snip. He’d kick Jenkins’ ass if he ever pulled that stunt again.

by CowboysRnumba1 on Jan 19, 2009 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

Excellent find cowboyz4ever

Ray Lewis is EXACTLY what this team needs..A born LEADER in the clubhouse that would hold every player accountable, ON BOTH sides of the ball. He has made no secret that he’s been a lifelong Cowboys fan, and I would certainly welcome the move.

by CowboysRnumba1 on Jan 19, 2009 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

I think RayRay..

…is too old for a 3 year contract…but I’d love to have a guy like him in the locker room. I think that D is as good as it is because of Lewis, and not just his play on the field. He just seems like the kind of warrior that you wouldn’t want to let down…and the kind of warrior that you better not let down. You don’t want Ray to visit you at your locker after you’ve quit during a game.

by Jim Vance on Jan 19, 2009 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

Or, he will kill you.

When did I become a Cowboy fan? When my mom told me I was.

by GunsUp on Jan 19, 2009 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

I hope it's true

I would imagine Lewis has at least a couple more productive seasons in him. Isn’t inside LB a relatively weak position for Dallas anyway? Sure, James had a good year for him, but does any opposing offense start trembling when they see his name in the starting lineup? Bobby Carpenter? Well…it’s been three years. When will he get his chance, and what will he do with it? Zach Thomas is likely gone…any others ILBs of consequence?

I know we’ve had this “what is a leader?” discussion a million times before. I do think that there are aspects of Lewis’s behavior that would make his teammates at least more accountable. Plus he’s still a high quality linebacker. The 3-4 is a defense predicated on its linebackers, and really the only outstanding LB that the Cowboys have is Ware. Ellis and James are serviceable, but the fourth spot is really undistinguished and up for grabs.

Look at the great 3-4 defenses throughout NFL history…the Steelers of the 90s and today, the Raiders of the 70s-80s, the Giants of the 80s, the Orange Crush, etc. All had the prototypical OLBs, but also difference-making ILBs who could be depended upon to make plays on a consistent basis.

The team seems set at outside backers (Ware, Spencer, Ellis and Burnett), but not so much at ILB. It appears to me that so long as this defense has an undersized nose tackle and two apparently underachieving ends, the focus needs to be on getting good LBs.

by DavidH22 on Jan 19, 2009 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

The dude is a great player

Why wouldn’t you take him, a leader, and a hard worker. Don’t let something that happened 8 years ago affect what he has done since, and what he does on the field.

by joey7289 on Jan 19, 2009 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

Even my

wife knows who he is, and she isn’t a football fan (for as much as I’ve tried.). Some things will and should follow you. Do I think he is a great player? Definitely. Do I think he is a great human? I don’t know, but letting yourself get caught up in those situations makes it hard for me to think so.

We may or may not get him, but this team desperately needs some leaders that are not afraid to get into anyone’s face that might need it. He is not afraid of anything I bet!

I manage proposals for a living, but I can't apply b/c I'm the resident ROMO basher.

I bash where as most people drink the kool-aid, so my Romo for Matt Ryan and cut T.O. save millions doesn’t fly far. Where are my kool-aid drinkers, WMillion is your guy…or maybe Jim Vance, Silverblue5 has lots of time/kool-aid love.

by sam0807 on Jan 19, 2009 4:15 PM CST reply actions

Why is it...

that if you aren’t overly negative, your “drinking the kool aid.”?

I think its supremely easy to just bash everything you see.

I think if you ever get to a point where you can’t enjoy a win and a loss effects you so much that lash out at everyone… then why watch the game?

I’ve been critical of alot of people on this team, but you have to give credit where credit is due as well.

by AirforceBat on Jan 19, 2009 5:16 PM CST up reply actions

Im not overly negative about everything.

Just Tony Romo. I can take or leave TO because I think his best days are behind him, but ROMO is a Tartuffe! Tony Romo for Matt Ryan straight up. I am on the Matt Ryan Kool-aid, and if I had to wager Romo or Ryan makes the Hall of Fame, it’s Ryan not Romo.

This was a very fun and rewarding experience. It was tough also. Perhaps the hardest part is coming up with new material every day during the dead spots of the offseason. It will be great though to read some other guys’ great points of view.
