Jerry sitting out FA?

Let me preface this by saying that this post isn't based in facts or anything I've read, but merely one man's opinion that scares the living daylights out of him.

Star-divide

We've heard it time and time again since the season ended.  Whether it be the scribes over at dc.com spouting the company line, loyal Cowboys bloggers, or even from Jerry himself, we hear time and time again that the Cowboys are sitting out free agency for the most part this offseason.  Sure, we'll dip in for a second tier FA, i.e. a cheap safety or a #2 QB.  I mean, it makes sense that we wouldn't.  We have a good, young core, one that's locked up (sans Ware) for quite a few years.  We just made our big move during the season in acquiring the other Roy Williams.  We're probably going to use a good part of the cap space we have left to lock up the best defensive player in the game to the biggest contract ever for a defensive player.  And besides a good safety and some OL depth, we don't really have any glaring needs.  Sounds like a sure contender to me.

But we all know Jerry can't help himself.  You think Jerry is going to let those first two weeks of free agency go by without getting the Cowboys at least a little face time?  Jerry knows something's broke, but he doesn't know quite what.  So what will he do, the same thing he always tries to do, throw money at it.  Besides all of this, there's still the biggest reason of all for Jerry to make a move.  Jerryworld.  Jerry is the showman of all showmen.  He wants this thing to open with a bang.  He wants it to be not just the talk of the league, but the talk of the sports world.  All we had to do was win the Super Bowl this year, and everyone would come flocking to it.  Only one problem, we finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs.  Now Jerry is left with a conundrum.  There has to be some kind of buzz going into this new joint, and the only way Jerry will see to create it is with a big name FA coming in to get people excited.  Think about it, it worked for the Jets.  Sure, they didn't make the playoffs this year either, but with Favre coming in this year, they became something other than the other New York team.  They had buzz all around them this year.  They were the talk of the league, the "it" girl.  You think Jerry didn't see that and take notice?

If frightens me to think so, but I can't help but think that Jerry is going to outsmart himself.  He can't sleep at night unless the Boys take up 25% of every episode of Sportscenter, and he surely won't let Jerryworld be outdone by the new stadium in New York.  At this point, we can only hope Jerry manages to maintain some degree of sanity.

I think our 2 biggest moves could start with getting rid of players. I still think that Owens will be released and I think that Roy Williams the safety will be let go. That would clear some space to maybe make a play for a player but it would probably go towards resigning Ware. BTW does anybody have guess of what it will take to resign Ware.

that seems reasonable to me. Not that it matters because he should get what he wants. Anybody who is that good deserves the money.

he looks good but he’s a little bit of an overachiever.

well then guess we won’t be signing him

Stephen will keep him in check

I think as time goes on, Jerry will allow Stephen more say in the day to day operations of the team and listen to what he has to say.

Stephen knows we shouldn’t be spending any money on some big name FAs when we need to lock up Ware and possibly Canty or Burnett.

I’m confident Jerry will listen to him if he starts to feel that itch that you’re talking about.

I hope you're right.

Maybe Stephen will make Jerry like one of those dogs that wears the dish around his neck so he doesn’t hurt himself.

addition by subtraction

Since Jerry has made the determination Wade will be here to implode another season and also knows Wade is not capable of keeping players in line, I believe we will cut T.O. and bring in another name on offense that isn’t so opinionated. Houshmanzadeh has a mouth but not as destructive. However, I don’t think we can afford him.

I like the Bart Scott idea but don’t think you can afford him without dropping TO and SS Roy Williams. He’s a recognizable name to most, a position of need as Zack is gone and a leader who has learned from one of the better leaders(Ray Lewis) but is much younger. Draft your SS.

we don't need anymore offensive players

unless they’re OL who can block.

OL who can block

or, maybe snap; Gurode is proving to be a disaster at snapping the ball; I don’t see how we can continue to live with a center that can’t snap the ball consistently.

Let us be Serious

When Jerry Jones said he was not looking to trade for a wr what happened here came Roy Williams. New Stadium means new players to attract people to the stadium. Never listen to Jerry and just know we will sign someone big.

Exactly.

If Jerry’s lips are moving, he’s lying to you. Three cheers for continuity anyone?

Areas of concern are

Safety
OL
and back up QB

So my question is who is a available FA?

We also dont have any CAP room. I think Jerry is waiting til next year when there is a CAP and is going to get all Yankee on the league!

We have the talent to win a SB. We didnt have the chemistry this year and the coaches sure didnt know how to develop it. Egos need to be in check this year for a SB run!

Safety and OL depth should be filled through the draft. For qb I like Batch. He has been a solid backup in Pittsburgh for a few years and can be an solid starter for small stretches. He was hurt this year and they picked up Leftwich to be the backup.

by jack dein on Jan 19, 2009 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

The only problem with drafting OL and safeties is that it take 2-3 years to develop those players. FA siginings can usually step right in and produce.

Charlie Bath is 35 years old and has thrown less then 150 passes in the last 5 years (8 tds/4 int). I would rather have Batch then Johnson for sure, but I would hope that we could do a little better!

by mrichardson70 on Jan 19, 2009 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

can you think of another free agent qb who could step in at a moments notice and be a good starter. Some of the free agents are going to want to have a chance to start, and are going to want more money. We really don’t need an instant starter for the OL and we should have the chance to draft a S with our first pick.

by jack dein on Jan 19, 2009 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

as long as his name

isnt Brad Johnson I will be ok. I can throw the ball further then him!

This is Jerry were talking about.

No way in hell he doesn’t make at least one splash. With the Boys moving into the new stadium hes going to give people another reason to buy tickets.

home grown talent

the cowboys need to get back into depending on the draft for establishng core players instead of free agency and getting players from other organizations, it tends to backfire, especially at the recevier position (galloway, meshown, TO, now Uno). the cowboys need to invests some draft picks into quality receivers such as a hakeem nicks out of north carolina or a brannnon le fields out of lsu would be a start.

I wouldn’t mind JJ passing on the big name free agents this year if he could figure a way to draft Taylor Mays next year, I was so glad to hear he was returning for his senior year I love that guy he’s a freak! Has anyone hear anything else about the Ray Lewis to Dallas chatter?

by DBagg_08 on Jan 19, 2009 11:59 PM CST reply actions

Taylor Mays is a big time player!

We shouldnt discount that Felix didnt get utilized last year and if healthy would help immensely!
