Ray Ray?
The 'Boys are supposedly interested in signing Ray Lewis if he makes it to the open market this offseason.
Linkage: Ray Ray Rumor
Kind of contradicted on this move myself. I seem to remember Ray complaining about the 3-4 when he last played in the scheme. On the other hand, I think Ray could do wonders for this team's mental make-up. The toughness he brings to a unit is much-needed. I still think he can play at a higher level than most ILBs.
I guess I worry most about him not fitting into our scheme. That's a lot of dough for a 3-4 ILB.
Thoughts?

Let's see
(dripping with sarcasm) Ray is a 34 year old linebacker with diminishing skills looking for a big payday. Sounds like he and Jerry 2.0 were made for one another.
That sarcastic comment aside, I am torn like you are Starred4Life.

I think it would be a great move
He is one of the few guys I think that could be a free agent coming into a team and immediately become a leader. People around the league respect and fear Ray Lewis and even though his skills might have diminished with age, he can finally be that fiery leader we need on defense. I watched Brian Dawkins out there when the Eagles man handled us and he could be like this guy someone who brings leadership. You can not teach leadership and this is something I think you pay high for.

I'm a bit skeptical
myself about any FA’s ability to jump into a leadership role that first year w/ a new team.
But like you, I think Lewis is one that could do it. And really, there’s no one on our defense who’s “leader toes” would be stepped on, I wouldn’t think. Hamlin? Doubt he’d really stand in Ray’s way. Ware? Doesn’t appear to be that fiery, vocal leader. T-New? See Ware, D. Ellis? Not sure if he’s even gonna be here.

Yeah we definitley need a leader with a coach like ours
If Wade can not motivate the players it needs to come from somebody who is playing and this really could be Ray Lewis.

Difference being we got Zach for about 28 million less then it would take to sign Lewis.
He would help the D though!

Aren't we trying to remove the criminal elements from our franchise?
We saw how the PacMan experiment turned out.
The priority is to resign D-Ware. I don’t know how much cap room we’ll have after that, but we can’t sign anyone until we get Ware resigned. If that takes the rest of our cap room, so be it.

Ray Lewis had ONE situation in his rookie year. That has been proven over and over again as an incident of bad judgement. Ray was aquitted of all charges and has been a saint the past 11 years or so. There is absolutely NO simularities to Pacman

In a word NO!
Ray had one high profile incident, learned from it, and then turned his life completely around and became an inspirational leader on and off the field. Ray has stated and many other players have confirmed that he is a spiritual leader for around 125-150 players in the league now.

For as long as I've loved "da U" -- including Ray Ray -- I'd actually want B. Scott instead
Why?
I don’t agree with paying a lot of cash for an older player.
Scott is an effective ILB, with productive experience in a 3-4. Teaming him and B. James together and adding a mammoth NT and playmaking FS will bolster the middle of our D.

I think it's a mistake to believe
that a player could come in and change the culture of the team. Either the players we have decide to play together as a team or they don’t. Ray’s vocal leadership skills in and of itself won’t change that.

I mostly agree
Ray has a special charismatic personality that is very rare in people much less athletes. I think that his influence already stretches beyond the Ravens. I think he wouldn’t be what he was in Baltimore, but he would be an upgrade over Zach.

Like I said in my comment above
I agree most people can not come in and immediately effect leadership, but Ray Lewis is a different bread of football player. He is a linebacker that can lift defenses purely on his leadership skills alone, he is an influence to everyone around him he brings fear into the opposing team and strength to other people around him through his vocal ability.

Ya, my buddy put it pretty well
when he said, “This (adding a player to fix the locker room) is a pathetic work around by Jerry.”
I understand that the players themselves play a big part in keeping the locker room on an even keel, but to me that responsibility should fall largely on the coach.
My point is, Wade has demonstrated an inability/unwillingness to change the culture of this team. He may believe it’s up to the players (or maybe even somebody else) to do so. In either case, adding a fiery, vocal leader like Lewis to ‘change the culture’ isn’t a bad idea since it’s been demonstrated that neither the current coach nor the current players are capable of doing so.
That is, of course, assuming Lewis is not a liability on the field.
by Starred4Life on Jan 19, 2009 3:18 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not only that
But what happens if Ray doesn’t buy into what WP is buying? Then WP not only doesn’t have a vocal leader backing him, he may have one leading a mutiny.
Ray has also benefited from strong Coaching personalities. Billick whatever you think of him, was a fiery leader. The 2000 team bought it and played hard for him. Ryan remained after Billick left, and although i don’t know much about him, it sure seemed like the players bought into what he was selling. My point is, It has to come from the top. And a newly signed veteran FA is not the top.

True
especially if that player comes in and tries to be a vocal leader in the small timeframe he would be here. It’s the guys that began their career here that are the true voices of the team. They have lived the Cowboy life.
Signings like Ray or Zach are just rentals, trying to fill in a gap until a long-term solution becomes available.

Here is a start
Word around the NFL is that the Dallas Cowboys are very interested in obtaining Ravens inside linebacker Ray Lewis if he becomes a free agent. The speculation is that the Cowboys are willing to give Lewis a three-year deal worth between $27 and $30 million, with $25 million guaranteed.
Dallas owner Jerry Jones believes his team is in the serious hunt for a Super Bowl title next season, and that Lewis could help solve some of the team’s problems inside the locker room.

Per DMN: The Baltimore Sun’s Mike Preston is hearing buzz that the Cowboys will make a run at Ravens LB Ray Lewis if he hits the open market.
Jerry said during the final week of the season that he doesn’t anticipate the Cowboys making a splash in free agency, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t happen. Lewis, who is still playing at a Pro Bowl level, would fill the hole created by Zach Thomas’ expected departure and provide the Cowboys a take-no-bull vocal leader.
It’d take some creativity for the Cowboys to sign DeMarcus Ware to a long-term deal and have enough room under the salary cap to sign Ray Lewis. But Stephen Jones and Co. could certainly pull that off, especially with an uncapped season on the horizon.
The biggest roadblock between Lewis and Valley Ranch is the fact that he probably won’t leave the Ravens. He’s played his entire career in Baltimore, and the Ravens just came up one game shy of the Super Bowl with a rookie head coach and rookie quarterback. Why leave now?
by TLCM on Jan 19, 2009 4:29 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
More Baltimore Sun
“We have a number of guys back, and we’ll try to keep as many of them as we can,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after the game. “We’ll try to keep as many of them as we possibly can. That will be our goal. We’ll see what we can get done.”
USA Today quoting Leais about not fitting into the defense.
In a sometimes-fiery, 23-minute news conference Wednesday with Baltimore-area media — to whom he had not spoken since last October — Lewis shadowboxed with his own words.
Speaking to Comcast SportsNet in April, Lewis seemingly addressed what the Ravens needed in the upcoming draft by stating, “The question is, ‘Are you going to let me do what I do? If not, then let me go.’” The Ravens drafted 340-pound defensive tackle Haloti Ngata in the first round to free up Lewis to make tackles, much in the way Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa did in the team’s Super Bowl seaso
This one is key in my opinion because we currently dont have anyone who can keep ray clean. We would need a definite upgrade (in size) at the NT position to allow Ray to be the most effective.

Football's Future
Ray Lewis, UFA, Baltimore Ravens
With over 1,600 tackles, 33.5 sacks, and 28 interceptions during his 13 seasons, Lewis isn’t just a Pro Bowl player and Super Bowl winner, but also a future Hall of Fame inductee. Since entering the league, Lewis has been a force and helped the Ravens to be one of the league’s best defensive units year in and year out. He’s been in Baltimore his entire career so it’s hard to imagine him with another franchise; he’s the face of the franchise. The Ravens will make him an offer that should lock him up until almost the end of his career and rumor has it that he is close to signing an extension.

I'd welcome him with open arms
He is better than Zach Thomas and would provide more leadership in the locker room and keep everything under control.

Too old and def. too much money
but if he’ll tear TO’s head off, or get him to shut up in some less violent way, go for it! 8)
By the way, ZThomas was a guy known for “Leadership” skills and didn’t “help the lockerroom”, so I don’t see Ray Lewis making a difference with this group of players, unless some other changes are made also.

This team likes to talk
Zach was always a lead on the field by example kind of guy. Ray is much more of a talker who backs it up on the field. It seems like subtle difference, but with all the media attention and jaw jackin that goes on in Dallas, his style kinda fits.
I do think if we could make it fit and still accomplish all the other roster moves we need to make, we should do it.

Dawkins-Lewis
Because there will be no salary cap after next year, couldn’t we sign Brian Dawkins and Ray Lewis and put the bulk of the contract during the second year of the deal? Dawkins needs to be a target for us because we NEED a safety, also he’s a natural leader and it would hurt the Eagles.

You don't think there is a young safety
coming out of college or in free agency that would push Roy, Keith Davis, Watkins, and even Hamlin for field time?
It would be super great to get Dawkins away from Philly, but I don’t see that happening. Their secondary is their greatest defensive asset and they won’t let that become a weakness.

A players base salary can only escalate up to 30% year to year.
Although the figures being listed out there, sure seems to be bonus laiden, and Ray’s base would be more like vet minimum, and bonus money can be scaled upwards towrds the end of three years.
’09- 1mm base/6 mm bonus, ’10- 1.5mm base/8mm bonus. ’11- 2mm base/10mm bonus
That would lessen his cap hit for the first year at least, then hope there isn’t a cap for a few more years.

To truly earn the respect of your teammates and become a locker-room leader you really need to have been with the team a few seasons at least. You need to be immersed in the team culture and have formed a relationship with the men playing alongside you. Ray is a great leader in Baltmore, but that probably wont translate well if he tries to adopt a similar role with another team.

I’d love to have Ray Lewis on the field, his passion for the game is bar none. As stated above we don’t have the big NT that is need to free him up to make tackles, but his leadership and ability to bring players together for the common goal of winning a championship is priceless. I also wouldn’t mind Bart Scott, I wasn’t a big fan of him last year, but after seeing that hit he put on Willie Parker and his nose for the ball that would definitely but a good addition. In all honesty with all the firepower on offense we should be able to outscore any offense in the league regardless of how bad our defense is, and our defense has some big names already, enough to hold teams to under 21 points a game.

Ray won't be the only Raven possibly available.
Baltimore has SEVERAL FA to sign this spring, and I can’t see how they’re gonna do it.
T Suggs-OLB/DE- Will make priority signing or will franchise again.
B Scott-ILB-Has age and production working in his favor to be resigned.
R Lewis-ILB- It will be hard for them to keep him, must take a huge home team discount.
D Edwards-DT-Young, started 13 games in ‘07, more in mold of Rat -6’3" 295lbs.
B McKinney-NT- 25 years old, SD castoff, the size we need, 6’2" 324lbs. RFA
C Ivy-CB- 13 starts in ’07, good CB depth, may wish to resign there.
D Martin-CB- RFA. missed ’08 with injury, 3 starts in ’07, possible CB depth? RFA
J Leonhard-SS-like this kids grit, small though, good return man, SS solution ?
D Landry-SS-missed ’08 with injury, starter in ’07, may chose between the 2 S, RFA
K Boller-QB- IMO, better than Johnson and Bollinger, I would take as back up to Romo.
L Neal-FB- bruiser still has it at his age, FB not a big need for us.
Wilcox-TE- no need
T Copper-WR- are old boy Copper, liked this guy, but not a need
D Williams-WR- RFA, will be retained.
Brown-OC- starting Center, imagine he’ll be resigned, not worth a look.
Baltimore has their work cut out for them for sure. Good luck with that.

waaaah..I think you should be more worried about the 15 other potential FA's unsigned.
35% of your team can be gone by April.

We will be fine.
You should worry about building a team instead of just a bunch of loud mouth talented players. Also worry about that stiff arm McClain landed on your so called Pro Bowl Safety. Worry about how we shut down that stadium. DYNAMITE! Lol, Joe Flacco was the last ever QB to win in Texas Stadium, gotta love it.

he is not coming here
Ray is too smart to come here. Baltimore is much closer to a championship than Dallas. THey have better ownership and a good headcoach. They have a good defense, no strong personalities and Ray is an established Icon in baltimore. Why would he come down to dallas? to compete with TO in war of words? to an organization with rumors of the coach with a foot out the door? with an OC who is desparately looking for another less paying job?
are you kidding me?

The same thing could have been said for Zack Thomas...
and he came here
by CowboysRnumba1 on Jan 20, 2009 1:55 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Well
When Zach Thomas signed, it looked almost inevitable that Dallas would make a strong push for the Super Bowl.
That said, they have the same potential this offseason that they did last year. It’s just a matter of making the pieces fall into place. Plus Dallas has a much easier schedule coming up than we had this year(to hell with folks saying Pittsburgh had the roughest schedule in the NFL. Dallas’s schedule was ruthless).
Romo>Flacco. Owens, Williams, Austin, Crayton>Baltimore’s receiving core. Ware>Suggs. Barber, Jones, Choice>McGahee, Rice, Mclain. Newman>any CB playing in Baltimore. Dallas has way more talent than Baltimore. If Ray WERE smart, he’d at least mull over coming to Dallas, especially with the money that’s supposedly on the table.

And yet Ravens just lost the AFC championship and Dallas didn’t make the playoffs. There is more to winning then just talented players.

I wasn't denying that at all
I was just saying, Dallas has more potential. They could very easily regain the momentum they had in 07 next season, which would put them leaps and bounds ahead of Baltimore.

Great Point
You guys are like the Yankees of the NFL. Sign a bunch of GREAT Talent, but having the best talent does not mean you have the best team. You guys should sign Mike Vick after he gets out of jail.

wait a minute
Romo > Flacco? flacco won two playoff games. flacco was a rookie whose team went 11-5. flacco is not a celebrity. he doesn’t throw a lot of Ints and certainly his best days are ahead of him.
you talk a lot about individual talent, but not about the team as a whole. we are a soap opera on ESPN, where baltimore is quietly going about business and improving and being a game away from superbowl. their defense was heck of a lot better than ours. Thier running game was more consistant than ours. their OL played better than ours.
they made it to the post season. we sat home and ate popcorn (that was a jab at TO)

Flacco 3 INTs in championship game
In Romo we Trust

Romo- 0 wins in the playoffs……

I'd be interested to see who had a better passer rating throughout the season
Or who threw for more yards, touchdowns, etc.
I was stating an opinion that most people, Cowboys fans or otherwise, would agree with. It’s obvious Flacco is extremely limited in what he can do when you see how they called their plays offensively. When they did rely on Flacco to pass it, he did nothing but turn the ball over, which was pretty much the only thing he did well in the regular season. He’s a younger Brad Johnson with a live(albeit extremely inaccurate) arm. Don’t kid yourself, Baltimore succeeded DESPITE their offensive woes.
Flacco lost the game for the Ravens the one time they had to rely on him to win. Romo has done the same for the Cowboys, but he’s asked to win for Dallas week in and week out, and does so more often than not.
So yeah, Romo>Flacco.

You just dont understand because you buy into the whole rookie thing. Lol, I love the cowboys, they make the NFL into a Reality Show.

zach thomas was let go by Miami
also he is no ray lewis.
by CowboysFanatic on Jan 20, 2009 3:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i dont think you could compare zach to ray. there both great players in there own ways. zach was a relentless animal in his heydays in miami. chasing down ball carries all over the field, and he still came in 2nd in tackles which if it weren’t for bradie would of been the most ever in a season i believe. and they said he couldn’t play anymore.. pshhh

Why rent Ray for a couple of years?
Draft or take someone in thier fourth or fifth year in Free agency.
by Martin79 on Jan 21, 2009 10:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
Why doesn’t Jerry just learn to draft talent instead of having to go out and invest in over the hill players? Lewis, Scott, Suggs, Ngata, and Reed are all homegrown talent, not 34 year old free agents brought in for $30 million.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
