Who's Going to be DC?

I may have missed any sort of conversation about this, and I know there have been quick ideas posted here and there, but really, I do not have any sort of bearing on who could be replacing Stewart as the D-Coordinator. I know there are some candidates out there, as well as on our own coaching staff, but really, who makes the most sense? I can think of a few candidates that are probably being debated, but none of them make me all that excited:

Garry Gibbs: He coached the LB's here a few years ago and Sean Payton thought enough of him to hire him as DC in New Orleans. He also thought enough of him to fire him after this past season.

Todd Grantham: Don't know much about him, although his success making Jay Ratliff into a Pro-Bowler is a positive sign. He was the D-Coordinator in Cleveland from 05-07, which if you look at their success then and the fact that he is back coaching a position now doesn't look like he was all that good as a coordinator.

Dave Campo: Been there, done that. I love the guy, and I think he is a good defensive backs coacch and I'm very glad he is back at Valley Ranch, but he doesn't really make much sense. He has always coached the 4-3, which is fine for him staying in the backfield, but I don't think he makes much sense controlling everything.

Which brings me to what I think may make the most sense:

Wade Phillips: Really, he is the best man suited to run this defense. However, I dont think we should demote him and hire a new Head Coach (although that would be ideal, but just won't happen). I think a situation where there is no single "Defensive Coordinator" on the team might be the best option. Campo is already an "Assistant Head Coach" as well as Defensive Backs Coach, so he now becomes "Assistant Head Coach-Defense", still coaching the D Backs along with Brett Maxie. However, he also helps Phillips study the opponent's offense, put together game plans, and allow Phillips to run the rest of the team during the week. Then, on game day, Phillips calls the plays, as he did while our defense was playing at its best last season.

This is similar to how the offensive staff was organized while Parcells was here. There was no real "Offensive Coordinator", and at different times Maurice Carthon, Sean Payton, and Tony Sparano were all playing significant roles in game-planning and play-calling. Parcells himself wasn't calling the plays, but he was overseeing things. Having Campo assist Phillips in devisin a gameplan during the week, and then keeping Phillips as the dfenseive Play caller on sundays may be, in my opinion, the best way to go.

OK, that was longer than i expected it to be. Any other candidates or proposals?

tood bowles next defensive coordinator?

i think the cowboys need to hire todd bowles as the next defensive coordinator, todd is currently on the dolphins staff. bowles already knows the cowboys defensive personnel, under his tenure in big d as secondary coach under parcells. bowles would automatically demand accountability and respect from the players in the lockerrrom when executing the defensive assignments. bowles would have players playing at a high standard with enthusiasum an a hard work ethnic. todd would be a sense of professionalism and no stupid stuff on the defensive side of the football. todd bowles would be a perfect fit, plus he is a student of the 3-4 defense.

after that embarrassing Rooney Rule satisfying interview

that Jerry gave him before hiring Wade, I dont think we’ll see him again.

At that point

jerry would have pulled the janitor or equipment manager into his office for an interview.

The fact that we don't have a DC, are not talking about a DC and won't hire a DC for a while

suggests the possibility is there to hire a new HC and let Winnie the Pooh step down to coach the Defense.

I keep saying, the chess pieces are still moving.

Why

would anybody think Wade would step down from the HC position to be the DC?

I know he’s a humble person and all that jazz, but c’mon…nobody is THAT humble.

He has ZERO ego

If he did, he would respond differently.

Winnie is a nice guy, and he wants to win, but the Head Coach is someone who must have a NEED to win.

I'm going to throw in my own wild card

Ray Horton, the Steelers’ DB coach.
Most people can’t name a single cornerback on that team, yet they have three who have all played tremendously this year. I have a hard time believing that’s a coincidence. Additionally, he’s had time to learn from one of the best of all time (LeBeau).
The kicker? He finished his playing career r with the Cowboys.

I would like to go that route. I think the best thing would be to pull a position coach from one of the teams that run the 3-4 in the AFC.

I don't think their secondary is that great though.

Look what happened against SD when a QB finally had time to sit and pick their secondary apart. He had one play in the 3rd quarter and still had 300 yards.

by Mandmeisterx on Jan 19, 2009 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

They completely sold out to stop Sproles

Made the SD receiving corps beat them. And while It’s a very good one, Pitt persevered much to my chagrin.
We’ve seen their pass D firsthand. I’m as sold as I’ve been on any D since the Ravens’ legendary unit during their super bowl run.

Actually, the unheralded assistant I like is Steelers' LB coach Keith Butler...

Check it out -

Keith Butler enters his sixth year on the Steelers’ coaching staff after joining the staff prior to the 2003 season. He remained on staff following Mike Tomlin’s hiring in January, 2007.

Butler and Tomlin previously worked together at Memphis in 1996, where Butler was the linebackers/defensive ends/special teams coach and Tomlin served as the Tigers defensive backs coach.

Butler was named the Steelers’ linebackers coach Jan. 28, 2003, after serving the previous four seasons in a similar capacity with the Cleveland Browns (1999-02).

Butler has been instrumental in the development of the Steelers’ highly regarded linebacking corps. The unit includes two Pro Bowl players, James Farrior and James Harrison. Under Butler’s tutelage, Farrior has led the Steelers’ defense in tackles for the past two seasons. Butler has also helped groom one of the team’s defensive surprises of 2007 in Harrison, who was elected as a Pro Bowl starter after the 2007 season. Harrison was originally a rookie free agent with the Steelers in 2000 that re-signed with the team just before training camp in 2004 after a year’s absence.

In 2006, Butler’s linebacking crew helped the Steelers rank second in the AFC and third in the NFL in rushing defense. The unit allowed just 88.3 rushing yards per game and helped the defense to not allow a 100-yard rusher the entire season.

In 2005, Butler’s linebackers helped the Steelers lead the AFC and rank fourth in the NFL in total defense. The sack tandem of Joey Porter (10.5) and Clark Haggans (9.0) ranked as the best for a linebacker duo in the entire NFL.

He’d be a potential DC successor… post Wade.

Good find Silverblue

He sounds like a possibility. After reading his background, it seems he might be Lebeau’s successor in PIT. Something tells me he might want to stay in that position.

T-New, shutting down WR's for Dallas since 2003

by APerfectStar on Jan 20, 2009 8:06 AM CST up reply actions

thanks tom, and what U said is what i was thinking, too.

i wish da King and son Stephen would start keeping an eye on younger, up-and-coming, low-profile assistants on other teams who’ve had proven experience — not just high-profile assistants or high-profile HC retreads that the MSM touts.

i mean, if you look at our coaches since Tom Landry, what’s the one thing they all have in common:

- Wade Phillips
- Bill Parcells
- Dave Campo
- Chan Gailey
- Barry Switzer
- Jimmy Johnson

They were all older guys who got hired. Jason Garrett is the closest thing to thinking outside the box, but did Jerry think TOO FAR OUTSIDE THE BOX in that he gave Red Ball the keys to drive the Dallas offense just after getting his learner’s permit.

Now, Garrett did extremely well in his first season as OC, but as many have stated, how much of that was because Sparano helped guide him. Without Sparano, the offense didn’t fare as well. But let’s also take into consideration that we played tougher defenses on the schedule, our starting QB missed three games, and our backup quarterback was impotent.

That’s why we need to bolster the O-Line this off season, to equip our offensive coordinator — and O — and see just how good JG is in this pivotal year 3.

If Phillips and Garrett fail to lead the Cowboys to at least one playoff win in the ’09 season and Jerry Jones decides to fire them both… I would like to see him at least look into the younger, up-and-coming, assistants WITH PROVEN EXPERIENCE — who come with a good reference from other coaches — to possibly lead our Cowboys as the new head coach.

But then again, I wouldn’t complain if he hired Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher, or Mike Holmgren either.

However, with a younger guy, there’s a greater chance that he could become last more than four years.

One more thing that I’ve noticed is if da King does indeed keep the Son of Bum for the 2009 season — and doesn’t re-sign him after that — here’s what his tendencies look like when it comes to “keeping” head coaches:

- Wade Phillips: three seasons
- Bill Parcells: four seasons
- Dave Campo: three seasons
- Chan Gailey: two seasons
- Barry Switzer: four seasons
- Jimmy Johnson: five seasons

With the exception of Gailey, Jones’ usually allows his HCs to coach at least three seasons. Of course, Big Bill had an option for a fifth year, but he retired (AGAIN) instead.

So as much as the media wants to make our owner out to be a fickle Al Davis/Dan Snyder, they couldn’t be more wrong. Just look at the amount of time/chances/opportunities he provides his HC hires.

Those facts don’t lie.

We need to interview the guy

"Protect the Romo, Save the Cowboys!!"

by Wmillion on Jan 20, 2009 10:01 AM CST up reply actions

I agree

Something like that would be better than any of the options I proposed above. I’ve never heard of Ray Horton, but that obviously doesn’t mean jack. Working under LeBeau is a very good credential, and ties to the organization are always good.

It does scare me a bit that there has been no talk about potential DC’s coming in to interview. With all these head coaching positions being filled you’d think that Jerry would want to start talking to people before people start filling up their staffs.

by CTBoy on Jan 19, 2009 8:57 PM CST reply actions

you never heard of Ray Horton?

The guy is a former Cowboy, I’m surprised you didn’t know that.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Jan 20, 2009 7:31 AM CST up reply actions

Why wouldn't Phillips step down?

If we hire a new coach now, his options are to either step down to DC or get fired and hope to land a DC spot somewhere else in the league. Not only are spots filling up fast, but if he is guaranteed a coaching job, he should take it.

He knows JJ will pay him to be humble and step down if that’s what is best for the team.

Having said that, I don’t think JJ would put him in a position to have to make that decision. JJ can have some crazy ideas from time to time, but he knows how to run a business and embarrassing your staff isn’t a good way to build trust.

On the other hand, maybe it’s what a coach needs. If a starting NFL player isn’t playing well or is better in certain situations, you would make him a role player. Why not try the same thing with the coaches?

by futurecoach on Jan 20, 2009 7:38 AM CST reply actions

Pride.

Wade’s been the HC here for 2 years, he knows he’s capable of being the head coach, and he knows it would create awkward situations with the players and the rest of the coaching staff if he did stay.

Kanye, you want to be the voice of this generation? Get in line! It goes me, Obamagirl, the Freecreditreport.com guys, then It's a tie between you-and Crocs.

by Conjunction on Jan 20, 2009 8:06 AM CST up reply actions

Pride can be swallowed

If you know that you can either be the DC (after being the glorified DC this year) or get fired. At this point, he’s not becoming a HC this year so why not keep working on the D for another year and finish what you started?

As for it being awkward, Phillips hasn’t started making things hard for any of the Cowboys yet (which would explain the lack of discipline) so why would he start now?

by futurecoach on Jan 20, 2009 8:19 AM CST up reply actions

If the guy had REAL pride

…it would have shown through in the way he reacted to adversity.

I didn’t see any evidence of a prideful (one of the seven deadlies) man in Wade’s public personna.

The guy inside the organization that makes the most sense is Grantham

He can take the bump in title and pay, but Wade will still be doing the play calling for a while and Grantham can stay in charge of D-line. Plus he was the Browns DC before he left after a falling out with Savage and Crennel. Considering the fate of those two, Grantham might have been in the right. IMO

Look at how much the Brownies D regressed without Grantham.

As silverblue5 points out,

his Brown defenses were some of the league’s worst. They are probably why they didn’t make the playoffs in ’07. That offense was lightning (although I have no clue where that offense went this year).
