Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

GM

Does anyone really believe that things will be any different in the coming years, with Jerry running the show?

Why would 2009 be any different from previous years?  Are we really that much more talented than the other teams in the NFL?  It seems to me that the teams that make it far into the playoffs are built around toughness, great coaching, trouble-free locker rooms, etc.

Seriously, but for the Parcells years, have we felt like we were truly building something special, since Jimmie?  I know we felt good last winter, but we were also beaten (again) in our first playoff game.

I know the odds are slim to none, but I think are only chance is for Jerry to step away - permanently.  Just for  giggles, does anyone else agree?

Just because he made a great team a almost 20 years ago

Doesn’t mean he can do it again. Plus, he had Jimmie Johnson on them all the time, keeping them in line. Phillips can’t do that.

If Jerry could just be an owner who uses his money for the best of the organization (not through cheap publicity stunts like signing Pacman) and stay out of the rest of it, we could sign a GM who could really help. If it’s hard enough to find head coaches who can also be a GM, imagine being an owner trying to complete a new stadium and trying to be a GM as well. He’s setting himself up for failure.

He needs to let Stephen come in and be the GM. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and could always hire a consultant or someone else to help him out.

Right now, the future is looking bleak for the ‘Boys just because of leadership issues. If they can get figured out….watch out. Until then, I’ll continue to be baffled by the inability of the front office to humble themselves and change. If you can’t do it, how will your employees do it? Lead by example Jerry!

Jerry need to relegate himself to writing checks and offering some draft feedback but Stephen is the future. JJ has shown that doing things “his way” ends in disaster and if he truly cares about the Cowboys, it is time to step back.

um...

Jerry didnt build the team 20 years ago. He became GM after he fired Jimmy.

Which only solidifies my point

Jerry doesn’t know how to build a team

This is crazyness

We had one of our best drafts last year. Jerry has been pretty darn good at picking up talent. He just needs to take himself out of the day to day interaction with the team and let his coaches coach.

You can't have someone picking players

That someone else has to manage and coach. We’ve been trying this for years now. It just doesn’t work.

by King Man on Jan 21, 2009 10:16 AM CST up reply actions

That IS the system your talking about

That is what GMs do. They pick players. Then coaches deal with them and coach them. Are you suggesting we go the way of the Dodo and pick up a Mike Holmgren/Bill Parcells coach/GM?

One good draft doesn’t make a good GM.

He is accountable for his coaching choices, picking coordinators before picking head coaches, and the numerous failed drafts beforehand with Larry Lacewell at his side.

Nope, Jerry is a crappy GM, but a great owner and it’s time we put down the kool aid and stopped deluding ourselves.

I would consider it one good draft

One of the main decisions I look at is Jerry talking Bill parcells out of drafting Spears over Ware.

Jerry

Should should make his son the GM. He can input from time to time, but he needs to enjoy being the owner.

that would be the best case scenario

and hopefully as he gets older, that might happen…gradually.

It will never happen so why even consider it a possibility

The best that anti-Jerry fans can hope for is that Stephen becomes more influencial with respect to player personnel and coaching decisions.

True.

This is Jerry’s Team not America’s Team.

No GM

But Jerry has got to get a veteran coach in here, and he has got to give him some rope, as far as the draft and FA.

Wasn't Jerry's team that went 13-3 just the year before

The ‘07 season you were praising the team he helped assemble and last I looked he didn’t suit up in Philly or call the most predictable plays in NFL history. Put it on who it belongs to—-TheTEAM. They thought they were entitled without ever playing a single game last year because they were dubbed Superbowl Favorites by eveyone. Then they started to fall apart and with NO real guidence from thier " camp cupcake "HC they didn’t know how to right the ship. THEY NEED A COACH AND A OC.

We were labelled as SB favourites two straight years because the team is so talented. And JJ is responsible for assembling that talent

Martins right on….He put together a more talented team than any other in the league…that could’ve been 14-2 in ‘07 if they hadn’t wrapped up the #1 spot early…and would have won at least 10-11 games if Romo, and others didn’t go down to injury…

If you want to blame anyone , you blame Wade , Garrett, and the players….JJ did his part as GM..

Heck, he would have won NFL Executive of the Year if the team played to their capabilities..

Yes, Jerry did assemble a very talented team

But he forgot about this thing called leadership while he was assembling the team. He brings in a HC who can’t discipline, an OC just biding his time, trying not to screw up to bad until he can take over for Phillips and a bunch of talented yet troubled (Pac, Tank, TO) players. Add that in with a sensitive QB, a bipolar Oline and no real vocal leader (the only vocal people on the team are James, Newman, TO, Crayton and Ellis and they never say anything of value) and what are you left with? A group of players who pretty much try to run things themselves because they don’t trust their leadership or each other.

And it’s not like they can look to Jerry to learn trust. How much does he trust his head coaches if he’s always mettling in their affairs? He won’t let them draft or sign the players they want, but he can sure sign players for them.

Face it, until Jerry decides to either trust a coach or at least his son to be the GM, nothing is going to get fixed. Change needs to start at the top so everyone can see it and mirror it.

the biggest problem with Jerry serving multiple roles

is the roles and the responsibilities are in conflict with each other. as a GM he has to support the coach and have autority over him. he has to hold players responsible and be the last disciplinarian and make tough player personnel decisions. as the president he wants more money, more exposure, more TV time, more advertising money. as the owner he wasnts team success along with team financial prosperity.

Thus players get pulled for media and marketing purposes. they are late to meeting so they are excused. This is in conflict with GM role that needs to make sure the players follow team rules. so because he is in conflict with himself, he lowers the $12k fine to $100. so he satisfies the GM in him and allows himself and the players the ability to be pulled into none football things like marketing.

so as the owner, he played judge and jury allowed the president to over ride the GM and had the GM satisfied by saying here is the fines your are looking for.

its a joke. one person can not successfully fullfill all the roles without another person becoming the sounding board and pushing back to create balance. Parcells and Jimmy did that. these other coaches are not doing that.

As the GM he is also allowing himself to by pass the line of command and get involved in player and football operations issues, because the owner who paid millions to the players is concerned about his investment and wants the GM involved. no sounding board. plays judge and Jury again and gets involved when he doesn’t need to (like the comments about barber, TO, Roy Williams (WR), etc.).
