Safety First! (A Must Read for Jerry)

Remember that guy we had so many years ago, who now is an analyst on that network (that loves to make up silly headlines about us). Yeah he was one.

Remember Cliff Harris, yeah he was one. Charlie Waters, yeah him too.

Oh yeah, let's not forget the guy who won SB 28 for us, James Washington.

What's happened since Woody? We thought we had one, used the eighth pick in the 2002 draft on him, this fraud even had a rule named after him, wow he must be good! Somewhere along the way he got dumped by Kelly Rowland forgot how to tackle, forgot how to cover and found God. After him just a bunch of temporary patches, Keith Davis, Patrick Watkins etc.. Kind of a coincidence that Roy had his best seasons while Woody was still on the field. Why have we neglected the most important position on the field for so long. Don't believe me, Look at the the final four teams in the Championship Games. Troy Palumolu, Brian Dawkins, Ed Reed and Adrian Wilson...Heard of em.

Want to win another Super Bowl? Forget all our other problems, find

a Safety. I took a look at the last 20 Super Bowl winners to see

how they fared at the safety spot. You ready?

89 SF- Ronnie Lott

90 SF-Ronnie Lott

91 NY-Dave Duerson (Yeah that one from the '85 Bears)

92 WAS- Todd Bowles

93-DAL- Woody

94-DAL-Woody

95 SF Tim McDonald

96 DAL-Woody

97 GB-Eugene Robinson

98 DEN-Steve Atwater

99 DEN-Steve Atwater

00 STL-Rich Coady

01 BAL-Kim Herring

02 NE- Lawyer Milloy

03 TB John Lynch

04 NE Rodney Harrison

05 NE Rodney Harrison

06 PIT Troy Palumolu

07 IND- Bob Sanders

08 NYG-Gibril Wilson

09 Palumolo or Adrian Wilson?

What does this means? It means out of the last 20 SB winners 17 had

a great safety. That's right I said 17 out of 20! Want to know how to

pave your way through the playoffs, look no further. Safety first!

Dear Captain....

all you have to do is look at the picture in my profile to see what my opinion is of Safety!

You've been a fan since '72 myself '78 SB XII

You certainly remember Charlie and Cliff. Why is it we’ve ignored this position?

Let T.O. Go!

I hope we do get in free agency....

one of these three….
Atogwe (St. Louis) Phillips (Tampa Bay) Jones (Cleveland)

ILB I want one of these two…
Mike Peterson (Jacksonville) Channing Crowder (Miami)

These guys are realatively inexpensive.

Sean Jones from Cleveland and Channing Crowder from Miami is my wish for FA pick up.

no one is cheap in free agency and we have little cap room for free agent players

I’m fairly certain that if you look at those winners they have good players at most positions and not just safety. Safety doesn’t help you win most games. They can have a big impact but in most games they aren’t mentioned much.

by jack dein on Jan 21, 2009 7:10 PM CST reply actions

Now Jack, of course they had great players at other positions...

All I’m saying is that in my opinions the single key to the whole defense is at safety. The Colts magical run in 2006, there defense caught fire when that little spark plug Bob Sanders came back from injury. He changed their entire defense and atttitude. I’m just saying.

Let T.O. Go!

I’m not saying safety is unimportant but next year we are going to have to many safeties on our roster. Roy Williams will be back, Hamlin will be back, Watkins, Davis will all be around. Unless we cut some of those guys where is he going to play.

by jack dein on Jan 21, 2009 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

Davis has no business playing defense

Watkins can be cut, Roy W. is gone or moved to LB, Hamlin is a keeper. I’m not saying that we need to go draft one. Just saying that the roster isn’t filled with Probowlers

Why would we move Roy W to LB?

That move wouldnt make sense for a full time position swap

I am not promoting it

Jerry was quoted 2 days ago about changing his position

Just a thought

but, he already looks bigger then Burnett, personally I think he is a better tackler.

Roy used to be a good tackler.

But the last few years he has even forgotten how to do that.

RW Cut....

Watkins who knows…if anything we may be light at safety…Henry will probably be our FS next year.

by Boyzfan94 on Jan 21, 2009 7:41 PM CST reply actions

If we move Henry to FS next year then that moves Hamlin to SS and allows us to cut Williams. I’m still not certain were going to cut Williams though. He still has a lot of money on his contract and was injured most of the year will probably be given a year to prove he can still play. With Watkins and Davis we have enough depth. Yeah injuries hurt but most teams don’t have a good enough backup safety that they are confident if they lose a starter. Safety depth is a something that teams with no holes have and we are not one of those teams.

its a great move

it lets our rookie cb’s grow further and they’re capable of holding their own
and puts henry the ballhawk at a position hes better at
hamlin is a hard hitting type of guy he’ll be good at strong
but this will only work for another 2 years…so we need to draft a safety as well to grow

on that 92 team

Everett was more of the lead safety

yup and ray horton

was the other one.

then in 93, it was good ole james washington who played spectacularly and helped us win it – not that having woodson was bad or anything.
