Opinions on the Cowboys Draft

You know what they say about opinions...well, you know, everybody has one and the other guy's stinks!

I love the draft. My wife thinks I must be mentally deficient to watch the draft on TV. She thinks it's boring. HA, this from a woman who has watched Moonstruck about 20 times.

You gamble your fortune and reputation on a college kid in the draft. He may be blessed with the physical skills of Achilles, but his heel may be a weak brain or weak character. The NFL Draft on television was the first American Idol, Mel Kiper the first Simon Cowell.

The challenge is: pick the right guy, at the right position, at the right time. Pray that he's durable, smart and dedicated.

Star-divide

I went online at random and looked up mock drafts that went to the second round, just to see if there were any consensus picks for the Cowboys at 51. Here are the results...

Player

Position

College

Dorell Scott

DT

Clemson

Alphonso Smith

CB

Wake Forest

Patrick Chung

SS

Oregon

Michael Hamlin

S

Clemson

Emanuel Cook

SS

South Carolina

Sean Smith

CB/S

Utah

Juaquin Iglesias

WR

Oklahoma

Michael Hamlin

S

Clemson

Matt Shaughnessy

DT

Wisconsin

Emanuel Cook

SS

South Carolina

We have Emanuel Cook from South Carolina and Michael Hamlin from from Clemson in a run-off.  My take from this unscientific sampling:

90% felt our primary need was defense.

70% thought our primary need was in the defensive backfield.

50% thought Safety was a primary need.

20% thought our primary need was along the D-line

Patrick Chung is the only name I recognize from some of the comments made on this site and I would be delighted to get him. The other names are just the opinions of other fans in regards to who would be the right player for the right position at the right time for the Cowboys and you know what they say about opinions.

Being from the Big 12 I didn’t get chance to watch many of these guys except for Iglesias. I will be somewhat surprised if he is still around at our pick. From everything that I’ve read it seems that there are a lot of DB’s that could go in the 2nd round. There are not a lot of solid 1st round DB’s in this draft. I would have nothing against taking a NT at 51 but DT’s for some reason seem to move up the board just before the draft. On one mock draft I looked at the guy had us taking Josh Freeman out of Kansas St. with the first pick of the 4th round. That seems to early for us to draft a QB but he might become a good trade candidate.

by jack dein on Jan 27, 2009 3:59 PM CST reply actions

I think he will easily be there at this time

The stock values of wrs is really down right now Crabtree and Percy Harvin might go high but I think others will not go till the second round

by rioplayer7 on Jan 27, 2009 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

Mostly because drafting a wr is such a crapshoot. You can take them in any round and you might hit big or miss. I personally don’t like Harvin. He seems like the type of player who isn’t going to produce that much as a wr and is to injury prone. Yeah he’ll have the big flashy plays but overall he won’t have that many catches.

by jack dein on Jan 27, 2009 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

Maclin is also a lock for 1st round

Crabtree, Maclin, Harvin seem to have enough talent to justify a 1st.

Iglesias and Robiske look like locks for 2nd

Interesting..

I think a good 40 time could get Iglesias in the 1st round

I really don’t think that Freeman is a first round pick. The talent is there but he is way to inconsistent to be a first round pick. Not to mention how weak of a qb draft this is. Stafford and Sanchez are first round picks but after that it falls off quick. Nate Davis will probably go in the late second and Freeman in the mid third.

Patrick Chung

I have watched about every Oregon game the past 2 years and this guy (along with OLB/LB Nick Reed) really stood out. Chung returns a ton of punts, too, but his fumble against Cal pretty much lost that game.

what happened to having safties who could return punts? We’ve been missing tremendous speed at the position

Seriously

like Jim Leonard and Ed Reed. It’s a rarity would be an excellent fit for this team.

Great start Jim!

Fellow Cowboy fan (Possum Kingdom Lake) and grandfather of 6. My wife thinks I am just plain nuts, with or without my football addiction. Until we get a quality Safety in tandem with Hamlim I believe we will continue to hemorrage against good play-action teams with solid TEs.

I dont watch the draft either

I find it boring and check in at the end of the day instead; and yea Patrick Chung would be awesome, along with a solid backup qb and another safety.

The draft is like a drug to me.

I don’t want to need it but I do. I think one reason I like the draft is that I’m not a nervous wreck like I am during the games. Although, I have yelled at the TV on draft day a few times.

The draft is a total addiction once you get into it. I’ve thrown up my hands in disgust a few times when the Cowboys don’t pick the guy I want. (Steven Jackson immediately comes to mind)

I like the draft a lot more now that the first round doesn’t take 6 hours to get over with. One thing thats always bothered me was when the team with the first pick has the guy signed before the draft and still takes 10 min.

Alphonso Smith

Mayock was raving about him at the senior bowl. He holds the ACC record with 21 career interceptions. He’s only 5’9" but he breaks on the ball really well. It was said that he’s a very risky player. I’d be surprised if he dropped that far in the 2nd round.

Have no idea why we would want Shaughnessy since he’s only 250. Scott is 310 but he’s not projected to go until the 4th round according to .

I have no idea why the Cowboys would take a WR with their first pick considering all of the other positions of need. You didn’t see any mocks with us taking OL? I wouldn’t prefer O-line in the 2nd but there is so much depth, I wouldn’t be surprised if a good prospect fell to us.

by hiafex on Jan 27, 2009 4:44 PM CST reply actions

I'm still holding out hope for Brace

I was just saying that Scott shouldn’t be taken with the 51st pick.

by hiafex on Jan 27, 2009 6:35 PM CST up reply actions

That would be hopeful.

I don’t see enough depth at the position for him to slip that far. But we do have an early 3rd, so hopefully everybody else is loading up on busts.

Here is a site where I go to figure out the value of certain players

And where they might go in the draft. It’s not very scientific but there are a lot of fans there who keep the mock drafters in check by informing them of their team needs. They’re a lot more interesting to read when the Cowboys have a 1st round pick but there are still several 2 round+ mock drafts on there.

by hiafex on Jan 27, 2009 5:00 PM CST reply actions

Most Mock Drafts

do not go seven rounds this early. However I found one that I thought was interesting to give folks some food for thought:

2nd round Sean Smith CB/S Utah

3rd round Jasper Brinkley ILB S. Carolina

4th round Anthony Parker OG Tennessee (Pick is from Detroit)

4th round Louis Murphy WR Florida

5th round Andrew Gardner OT Ga. Tech

5th round Corey Irvin DT Georgia (Pick is from Tennessee)

6th round Sammy Hill DT Stillman (Pick from Miami)

7th round Glen Coffee RB Alabama (Pick from Detroit)

7th round Garrett Reynolds OT N. Carolina

While this draft is not perfect, I’ll take it. For me the most interesting pick is at #3 with Brinkley. ILB who weighs 270 and runs 4.68 forty. I would love for this kid to be there in the third round. Check this link for one of his plays.

Irvin is pretty similar to Ratliff.

Murphy has good upside and could be a guy that is a better pro then college player.

by houseofprime on Jan 27, 2009 5:59 PM CST up reply actions

You're right about

Irivin but Wade likes those type of NTs. Murphy is supposed to be a little raw but he is lights out fast. (I hate WRs from Florida,) Sammy Hill is interesting 6" 4" 325 lbs. Supposed to have only 5% body fat. Small school kid. He’s big enough.

by Wmillion on Jan 27, 2009 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

It is said

that he plays well in space but is better going forward and back rather than side to side. It sounds like he might be better early in his career playing on the 1st two downs of a series. His only real drawback was a knee injury in 2007 but it stated that he has fully recovered.

by jevans1729 on Jan 27, 2009 7:06 PM CST up reply actions

Jasper Brinkley is a good player

I live in Greenville, SC and have seen this guy play his whole career. What I like about him is he has shown more than physical tools; he seems to be a leader. Something else our team needs direly.

7 round mock I found

2nd Matt Shaughnessy DE- Wisconsin
3rd from Cleveland Patrick Chung S- Oregon
4th from Detroit Josh Freeman QB- Kansas St.
4th Demonte Bolden DT- Tennessee
5th Cedric Dockery OG- Texas
5th from Tennessee Mohamed Massaquoi WR- Georgia
6th from Miami Worrell Williams ILB- California
7th Andrew Hartline OT- Central Michigan

Freeman ran an NFL style offense in college so many scouts think that the learning curve won’t be as long for him. On paper he looks like a sure fire 1st round pick. He is big at 6-6" 250 lbs. he has a strong arm and good enough accuracy, he is mobile enough. The knock on him is that he is inconsistent. In three years as a starter he teams were never that good either and while that can’t all be laid on him he is the quarterback. There is also nothing special about his career numbers. He had 8,078 yards, 44 tds and 34 ints, ran for 343 yards and 20 tds. He also has just a 59% completion percentage. To answer your question though I really don’t know, I never thought he was that good, way to inconsistent for me.

There is always

A quarterback who shoots up the draft boards based on superior physical tools- QB’s like Cutler and Flacco.

Shaughnessy's production dropped this year.

10 less TFL, tackles and 1 less sack in the same amount of games played.

This team needs a true 3-4 DT

Especially since it looks like either Burnett or Carpenter will be starting next year.

by hiafex on Jan 27, 2009 6:42 PM CST reply actions

Amen hiafex!

Ratliff is nice but 310lb + beast might have stopped those 2 runs that lost the Ravens game. This defense is def soft in the middle and we do need another safety but what good is he if he is up in the box having to support the run the whole time?

Otis Wiley SS outta Michigan St. Had 4ints first 4 games of this season before getting hurt. Don’t know much about him other than that scouting report. Sounds like hes worth a look though..

Chase Patton.. QB out of Missouri. He was a back up to Chase Daniels but hes 6ft4in tall and his coach said he throws the prettiest ball he’s ever seen. Said he can throw the ball 50yards without stepping I think in the article. Seems to have good intangibles. Late round flyer?

jerry

Knows Safety is #1 priority in the draft. I think he comes up and grabs a good one if we don’t fill the spot in FA.

If we can grab McCown drafting a QB isn’t a priority, more depth at OLB would be nice.

Senior Bowl info
B.J. Raji
Folks have been clamoring for the big nose tackle from Boston College. Shortly before kickoff, Mayock was talking about the big prospects, and in discussing Raji he threw out a comment that is ALWAYS a red flag in my book. He said that Raji has huge potential, but his problem has been consistency. That leaves me concerned when we’re talking about such an important position in the 3-4. And sure enough, he just about disappeared during the Senior Bowl. He apparently had a good week in practice, so maybe it was just a bit of a letdown. Of course they did say he struggled against Cal’s own Alex Mack, so maybe it’s not just a letdown performance.

Either way, it’s definitely something worth keeping an eye on. I certainly want top-level talent, but if a guy busts his butt every single play but is slightly less talented, maybe it’s a safer play than the super star who doesn’t bring it every play

more good info

I couldn't agree more with the consistency concern

It seems like we’ve got enough of those guys on the team already. I’ve never really heard of many guys who have turned that kind of thing around, it usually goes the other way.

The Draft

It is often said in baseball that you have to be “strong up the middle” to be successful. I think the same can be said for the NFL. Of course, the “edge” players seem to get paid the most money, but, in my opinion, you have to have an immovable NT, a good MLB and a safety that can direct traffic and make some plays. Dallas has a good MLB in Bradie James. We can move Anthony Henry to FS for the short-term and draft a long-term replacement this year. But, we need an immovable NT. Ratliff can play at DE. We don’t have to break the bank to re-sign Canty. But give us a big solid anchor up the middle. As for the long-term replacement at FS, give me another Michael Downs (Rice graduate) who can think instead of a “thumper” like Roy Williams.

by redbeans on Jan 28, 2009 10:57 AM CST reply actions

Anyone sure who the best S is in this draft?

Seems to be a jam at the top 1-2 rounds and with that crowd, all productive some an edge faster but Id almost rather have a big hitter than the speed if its close. I like the kid from UTAH, doesnt shrink when the lights come on.
