Manusky Not a Cowboys DC Option

Santa Rosa Press Democrat sportswriter Matt Maiocco announces an extension for 49ers DC Greg Manusky and takes a subtle swipe at one of his Metroplex-based colleagues:

Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky recently signed a contract extension to remain with the 49ers through the 2010 season...

Anyway, this should dispel the rumor that Singletary has already fired his defensive coordinator. In reference to Manusky, a Dallas-area newspaper reported this week that Singletary "booted his butt." Manusky was portrayed as a leading candidate to join Wade Phillips' staff with the Cowboys.

It seems somebody needs to replace her Bay-Area sources.

Now, back to Jim Vance's excellent analysis of Cowboys DC candidates, only his list is now one name lighter.

You heard it here first

Dallas will promote Campo to “DC” but it will be Wade’s World on that side of the ball.

Wow 2 clowns!

Campo’s lucky to have a job. We have the worst coaches in football.

you dont think Campo did a good job with the DBs last year???

gimpy Newman, Pacman in and out with suspensions/injury, 2 rookies in Jenkins and Scandrick…Thong out for most of the year (although one could argue that made his job easier)…Watkins and Davis playong extended stretches….

dude – i think Campo did an admirable job last year

Brett Maxie coaches the safeties

I'm not sure...

Maybe b/c they feel they don’t have to make it official yet. Anyone at this point stepping in is going to be more or less Wade’s puppet as DC. So why rush to fill the spot.

I agree with Raf ( I think you said this) that we should be pushing for another set of eyes/another LB or DB coach that could help out if that is what they are going w/ Campo.

They might be looking at the staff, even though it’s not listed this way, as:
Jason Garrett – Offensive Head Coach
Wade Phillips – Defensive Head Coach

Cowboys DC is already in place

and his name is Wade Phillips. He’ll probably at some point give the title to somebody like Campo to help him run the meetings, but the defense is Wade’s, end of story.

I find all of this speculation on who will be our new DC quite amusing when for all intents and purposes we already have one.

They can do it

but they’re missing a chance to add a good defensive coach to the staff. Elevating
Campo still means he’s coaching the d-backs.

I agree with you, the scheme is Wade’s. All the coaches know it. Wade complemented Dave for some innovations he made in camp last summer. I asked him about it and he told me that the front seven stuff is where the real scheming goes on and all those plans are Wade’s.

by Rafael Vela on Jan 29, 2009 1:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree

Coaching up the front 7 is where the DCs earn their paycheck. Look at LeBeau with the Steelers, his schemes with that front 7 is what makes the Steelers defense the very best and if the Steelers win the SB they will be the reason why, not Big Ben.

Their secondary is extremely mediocre outside Polamalu.

But why not take the chance to swipe

a good young assistant from another staff to work with the ILBs, or the Ss, who you can groom to run the defense. That’s what Wade wanted to do with Manusky and tried to do with Stewart. Develop a protege.

He’s not going to be in Dallas for that much longer, whether he succeeds for falls on his face. Why not develop a promising young mind, who might stay in that spot?

by Rafael Vela on Jan 29, 2009 1:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

because whoever becomes the next Cowboys HC

will probably clean house and bring in their own guy to be DC. Thats usually how it works when a new HC is hired.

Not if that replacement is Garrett...

I think it’s a good idea to groom a young protégé so when the handoff from Phillips to Garrett happens then there is already someone promising in house who wouldn’t change the schemes too much. Keep things consistant

Pittsburgh’s linebacker’s coach
1. Streamlines the transition of bringing Cowher in
2. Lebeau will be DC until he retires and when he does, Butler would take over. That
    says alot about the man
3. The high level of play the Steelers have shown at the linebacker position is inviting

DC

I said this a few weeks ago. Why not contact Romeo Crennel? If he does accept, combine Phillps’ one gap with Crennel’s two gap scheme depending on the offense, and that would provide headaches for the opposing team. So what if Phillps has a one gap. Why not combine both? It’s not rocket science; it’s football.

by beautifultyrant on Jan 29, 2009 4:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Squid..

I’m not picking on you specifically, but this just seems like a good place to ask a question to all.

Why is the tought process narrowed to: a 3-4 experienced coach can only excel at coaching 3-4 defenses, same for a 4-3. Even slight variations with the same base defense are considered an eliminating factor for a coach. Where are the innovators? Who was the originator of the 3-4 and the 4-3? The Tampa two? It’s the innovators who create the paradigm shifts in the game and dominate the league for years.

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.

Yup, I know..

I’m not advocating that we switch to a 4-3, I’m advocating that we bring in bright coaches with a new perspective, who can take what they know, and learn new things and change the game.

Mike Nolan worked for Reeves for a few years, and he has used hybrid 3-4/4-3 situational defenses. I’m betting he will bring that philosophy to Denver. I’d like to bring in young, bright D coaches who can learn from Wade but also add some of their own wrinkles. AND, be in position when the inevitable occurs.

I think one of the things the successful teams(Patriots,Steelers) do is one philosophy.

These guys run the same systems on O and D. All their coaches learn it and can coach it. All of their scouts look for the same type of players every year and get better at finding those players every year. The younger guys come in and they have 90 % of team able to teach them the system and the learning curve is accelerated. Everyone is pulling the cart from the same side.

Changing coaches and philosopies every year or 2 is bad for business. Continuity is the key. Quoting Gunny Highway is always worth high marks but I would rather do that in terms of injuries and weather and not system and philosophies.

when you have two sets of d-linemen you can platoon

or you have either 330 lb. linemen who can one gap (meaning you find 3-4 Reggie Whites)
or 290 linemen who can change shape and add 40 lbs. on those downs when you decide to two-gap,
it’s not as easy as you make it seem.

by Rafael Vela on Jan 29, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

and I don’t want an undefined, hybrid new defensive scheme to go with an undefined offensive identity. You can’t changing defensive pilosophies from what you have done the last two years when the HC is only going to be here for one more. Changing the defensive philosophy should be way down the priority list. Let’s stick with what we saw brilliant flashes of last year and bemore consistent at it. If Wade is going to be calling the defense for a full year let’s give him a chance to hang his hat where his reputation lies

by cow_fanatic on Jan 29, 2009 8:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

3-4 4-3

Wade Phillips himself said the main difference is that in one…………there are 4 down lineman and in the other there are 3.

Didn’t we see a variation of the 46 defense this year?

Arent we often in a 4-2-5 in Nickel?

Didn’t Belichek the great 3-4 guru use a 4-3 to beat Oakland and win their first Super Bowl?

The missing link in our current Roster is the NT………..the great big one. Jay Ratliff is really more of a DT than a NT. Heck he is just a football player.

DE Ware DT Ratliff DT Spears DE Ellis rotation of Canty Bowen and Spencer
LB James LB Burnett LB Carpenter / rotation of players drafted………..

NOW I am not advocating a change to a 4-3. I actually think our defense is in good shape. We need an ILB and at least one good safety in the draft. A true NT would allow Rat to play DE in the 3-4.

But if Demarcus Ware hit the free market………….which he won’t………or Ratliff……….every team in the league would be interested………..regardless of scheme because they are both great football players. Could Haley have played OLB? Jimmy Johnson liked fast smaller LBs……….but he had some meat upfront. Heck his defenses were precursors to the Tampa 2………..Ellis moved to OLB after playing DE in a 4 man front for a decade.

Players change teams and move from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Obviously you have a model or mode you want for each position and a certain size…………but if you stuck to that Ferguson never would have manned a NT, nor Ratliff and Zach Thomas and Dat and Dexter never would have made it out of High school football programs…………..but they are pretty darn good.

I liked that Phillips was willing to mix it up with some 46 schemes last year. I thought the defense improved. The BOYS made some bonehead plays on both sides of the ball to give up too many close games. Arizona, Pittsburgh and Baltimore just to name a few. That last Philly game was just pathetic.

I actually think Wade is a good DC……….just not sure he is HC material……….he seems to fit the nice guys finish last mold to a tee. I sure do agree with your assesment that the D has missed Woodson and still does. What a difference maker he was………….and looking around the league the Safety position seems to be much more important on winning teams than I ever would have thought.

by Jon B. on Jan 29, 2009 10:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Question for Rafael

It is so hard to find 330 lb. NT types coming out of college. Why can’t a guard (like Kraig Urbik) be converted to a NT? If you read the early scouting report on Urbik, it stresses his size, strength, mean disposition, and, correspondingly, his lack of foot speed, inability to be a pulling guard, and then sums it all up by saying he is a “mauler” type of player. Please take a minute to educate me (and others) on the potential switch of a guard to NT. Thanks!

by redbeans on Jan 30, 2009 1:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think along the same lines..

We should be looking to trnsfer a Pat McQuistan, or a rookie beefcake into NT position..stout at the poa….agility , balance, and strength…sounds like an OG to me…

McQuistan…6’4" 315lbs…..Holland 6’3" 330+lbs….etc…etc..etc..

I dont think Cowher is even a viable canidate for us.

First I think he wants a large say in personel matters. second, though I like him as a coach, I dont think he fits us. If Wade is not around next year and JG is not ready then Holmgren seems the better fit. Our D should bemore stablized and Romo would be a good fit for Holmgrin offense. JG could benifit greatly with a few years of being under Holmgrin as well.

I want to believe that JG will blossum this year into what many of us thought he could be. But even if we have the number 1 offense that wouldnt mean JG has enough seasoning to handle the HC reins.

by squidlo97 on Jan 29, 2009 4:52 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't even think Cowher is that good

He seems more of a sideline cheerleader than a HC to me. He was blessed with Dom Capers and Dick Labeau as DC’s. That is where the Steeler’s success came from. He’s the guy who stubbornly tried for (how many years) to stick with Cordell Stewart at QB. Not the mark of a genius.

75 Degrees and Glorious in Montecito

If Wade Phillips makes the same mistake twice, choosing an unqualified puppet to serve as Defensive Coordinator, Tex is going to throw Chihuly’s glass sculptures off the balcony.

The beleaguered head coach doesn’t appear to have learned any lessons from he previous failed stints, as evidenced by the lack of attention to special teams. Regardless of who’s defense it is, Wade needs to surround himself with the best people possible. Allowing Brian Stewart to dictate a decision about Dom Capers last year was moronic.

This is the ideal opportunity to lure a bright young coach – no, not one who runs the league’s 30th ranked secondary – to Dallas with a promotion to coordinator, see Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Having seen Wade up close for two years, Tex expects him to take the easy route and do the wrong thing.

I'm all done!!!

I am officially staying low key next year until we decide to get a real coach..I will follow the cowboys but i am not going to get all stressed out like i do every year.I am sick and tired of standing up for our team and in return i look like an idiot..I don’t care how much talent we have the bottom line is we have no coaching and our stars think this is just a big joke.
It’s been long enough putting up with these pop warner coaches “aside from the tuna” that have no business being coaches of the Dallas Cowboys…..Enough!!!!!!!
I am all done!! until i see a real coach..I believe that has been the problem here for the last 12 years and until this is addressed we will continue to be a mediocre organization.
I am sick and tired of hearing when was the last time we won a playoff game.I don’t care about what other teams have done just in case someone is going to compare us to another team..I cannot believe “Santa Claus” is going to be our coach again..That’s how he treats his players and that’s who he looks like….
