Cowboys might pursue Shanahan
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn't changed his mind about firing coach Wade Phillips, but Mike Shanahan would be the leading candidate if he ever does make a move, according to team sources.
Shanahan's unexpected firing on Tuesday by the Denver Broncos has prompted Jones to give "thought" to Shanahan as the future Dallas coach -- even more-so than Bill Cowher or Mike Holmgren -- but 2010 may be more timely than 2009, the sources said.

Wow Mullin
you and I are reading the same stuff at the same time. I read that article and then just posted this on another thread -
This is my first post since the meltdown in Philly. In my 20 years as a cowboys fan I have never been so disgusted with a team as I am right now. The fact that the big reaction to this is to fire the special teams coach is RIDICULOUS! This teams needs a major change, not a roster overhaul or even a coaching overhaul but a major change here or there is needed.
Redball sucks and I am with boyzrback 100%, praying that some idiot team makes him their HC. The guy had a terrible year and that was no "sophomore slump", that was him getting exposed after Sporano took his skills to south beach.
Jerry made some bad moves last time he needed a coach but the stars have aligned and Shanahan is out there, still getting paid $20 million due to his Denver contract. We need that guy running our offense, getting in Romo and TO’s face and telling them to shut the hell up and play ball. Maybe he and Wade can be co-coaches, whatever, just make it happen because my faith in Jerry and this organization is at an all time low and some bullsh*t about "we’ll change our ways" is not going to help this team pull out of the toxic sludge it is mired in.

I'm with you Billito...
In fact, I think the pressure to make Shannahan head coach is too much for Jerry to handle. It might even make Jerry a little less of “GM” that he thinks he is. But in the end, I predict Jerry will do it, because he needs a tough disciplinarian, and Wade ain’t that. The fear of losing shannahan will be too great, and Jerry will fold under the pressure- unless he is a fool for sure.

I sure hope so
But I would like to see Wade stay on as DC. I think Garrett will be a decent coach eventually, but we don’t have time for on the job training.

Shannahan is not coming....
Jerry is not going to fire Wade…forget it guys…Garrett will probably be the HC next year…I know that’s not what BoyzRback and others want to hear, but unless Garrett completely screws the pooch next year he will be the next HC of this team. I’m sure Jerry already got in Garrett’s ear when he heard he was asked to interview for Detroit job.

So Garret has to screw the pooch two years running to not be HC?
Unfortunately, I think you are right

Assume
I love how you assume he will screw up next year. Good thing Jerry has more faith.

no..Jerry doesn't have faith....He's opened up a booth- giving out tickets to interview his star OC...
If he wanted him back, he would deny access to interview him……nuff said
so much for that built in contract structure assuring him the HC position….laughable..

not true
Jerry could only deny permission if it was a collateral move.

umm...then why are all seeking permission prior to interviewing him Terry ??
He’s an Associate Head Coach for a reason…….he can deny them……but he’s not….good boy Jerry..

no, he can’t deny him Boyz, you’re wrong about that. If an assistant coach is being sought after for a HC position, his current team can’t deny that.

MY POINT IS.....Jerry could give a rat's ass if Garrett goes anywhere...DON'T KID yourselves...
He was in his ear telling him to turn down interviews ???
Then why is he going off to interview in St. Louis, and Denver, etc ??
IF Jason Garrett thought he was safe here , and was “promised” the HC spot here in the future, HE WOULD make it known via statement that he is not interested in pursuing other coaching positions……….period…You don’t see Mora-Seattle, or the coach in Indy, that were promised the jobs, making themselves available for interviews…do ya ??

owners basically have to give permission
if not then no coordinator would agree to coach here because they know they have no chance to move up. would you go work for someone who had a history of not letting their employees interview or attempt to get a promotion at another business?

Now! Do it Now Jerry! Don’t wait! give Shannahan an entire year to get the team starightened out, but do it NOW!

I agree it should be done now
But I don’t see it happening until 2010, unfortunately.

I don't see Shanahan taking a year off....no way...sign now, or lose him...
Watching Wade squirm in his seat as he tries to relay to the media that he’s gonna be tough was hard to watch, and down right non believable…He can’t “become” tough all of a sudden…I’m the same way as a construction supervisor, and admittedly get run over myself when trying to get more production, but I know I can’t change and be a dictator, having my workers hating on me, and sabotaging my projects…It’s easier for me to lay off non productive workers, than Wade cutting players…….I love Wade, and his defensive game planning. Maybe he’s such a push over that he would stay on as DC, and give up the HC title…but who knows, I think he even has too much pride to take a back seat, with his tail between his legs…Jerry should really really do this…We need change much more on the offensive side, than defensive side….Capers, Crennel, Thurman, and others are there and waiting if Wade doesn’t continue on the path to a SB…

Do you know why You agree?
Because the truth is DC that Jerry will send a message to all the players to take business seriously. If he doesn’t do something, then all the players will take a “devil-may-care” attitude, and we can’t afford that NO MATTER WHAT TALENT WE HAVE.

I’m with everyone that believes the Cowboys need a major shake-up in the coaching/management department. The team just had too many penalties, too many breakdowns (i.e. giving up huge plays at the end of games), and too much talk of players unhappy with their roles this past season. I like Wade Phillips as a person and as a defensive coordinator. I just don’t think he’s part of the answer for this team as head coach.
Unless Jerry Jones alters the way in which he manages the team, I worry these same problems will remain. The guy is a great owner, and is willing to spend money and take chances. I just believe he needs someone new to help with personnel and coaching decisions. Shanahan has a lot to offer any organization. I think the Cowboys would be lucky to have him in some capacity.
by Cannon Jacques on Jan 3, 2009 9:05 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
You are exactly right
The astonishment I felt watching that philly game was second only to Jerry’s reaction. I could not believe that a wall to wall meltdown for the most important game of the season was met by – “Gosh I’m disappointed, but me and Wade just had a man-to-man conversation, so it’s all good”.
This team failed so spectacularly that the only logical reaction is a major change but I think that Jerry is almost paralyzed by his ego and is scared to make a “wrong move”.
He needs to get rid of Stewart and Redball, sit down with Wade and Shanahan and make this happen. His shining star of an organization just took a major kick to the balls and he needs to make a splash right now, not next preseason.

+1 If only Jerry can get Shanahan and Wade to accept being Co - HC's....
Both excel at their side of the ball, but know nothing about contributing to the other side….

The only way this happens in 2009 is...
Jarrett becomes a HC or Co-Ordinator somewhere else. At worst Jerry could bring mike in with the same clause as he did with Jarrett by making him an interim OC and making him the HC next year. I think with the amount of teams seeking out Jarrett this possibility is very realistic.
by thejanusman on Jan 3, 2009 10:01 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Who is Jarrett?
Do you mean Jason Garrett? He could get snared by the Broncos.
Aikman and Bradshaw?
Please. They are in the same league as Trent Dilfer and Jim McMahon as QBs who were taken to the SB by great Defenses and great Running Games.

From what I heard on Sirius NFL
Shannahan cannot just take the year off or he will lose his guarranteed money from Pat Bowlen. He has to make an honest attempt to find gainful employment as a coach this year. Also, Shannon Sharpe seems to think there’s no way he wants to take off a year. It’s not in his make up to take that kind of time off. He’s a football coach, that’s what he does, thats all he knows. Now I rarely agree with Sharpe’s analysis of things, but he played for the man for what? 8 years or something like that? I’ll defer to his “insider” knowledge until someone convinces me otherwise. So I think he’ll be coaching somewhere next season, either as the HC or at the very least an OC.

That's doesn't make sense...he was fired right??? His remaining 3 years should be paid out.
by Boyzfan94 on Jan 4, 2009 11:00 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
from ESPN
Also appealing to Jones, Shanahan would not carry an exorbitant price tag. Because his contract had three years remaining, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen owes Shanahan $20 million. Any owner who hires Shanahan could pay him a lower salary than the estimated $7 million a year he’s owed and Bowlen would be obligated to pay the balance of that “offset.”

Shanahan is a smart guy
and he knows there is a ton of underachieving talent on this cowboys roster. He has not had a lot of success in the last few years so he could step into a team loaded with players and desperate for playoff success and become the savior in big D. God knows this team need something besides the usual garbage of “gee whillikers, we’ll try harder next time.”

Don't worry Billito...
Just give it time. This will brew and stew in Jerry’s head, and then he’ll be forced to make a move. If Jerry doesn’t “Get it”, then we are all doomed to more mediocre football, while we watch the Eagles and Giants compete for the NFC title year in year out (maybe even the Redskins too). But going into the new stadium, wanting the team to play better, a disciplinarian type coach- what isn’t right in front of Jerry to figure out? If he does nothing, then we are doomed to possibly being- shall I say it- the fourth best team in the NFC east? If he does it, then possibly the best?

I know Jerry loves continuity
but there is no way this team comes back from this meltdown with the current coaching staff in place. Are these players suddenly going to respect Wade? THey are going to forget all the sniping and mutinious comments that came out this year? Jerry needs to swallow his pride and get a real coach in place. Get rid of Stewart and Redball and tell Wade he can stay on as DC or head to the unemployment line.

I wish Shanahan could come on and run the offense in 2009 in the worst way.
This team would have the number 1 offense in the NFL without question were he running this group. He is a master of play-designing and play calling, not to mention game day adjustments; all things that Garrett is currently terrible at.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Wade stay on to run the defense because Shanahan’s teams were never really too impressive on that side of the ball but if that didn’t work out there are some quality defensive coordinators out there, like Romeo Crenel.
The offense took a MAJOR step backwards when Sporano left. For me it always comes back to Ray Lewis comment before the 12/20 game when he said the Cowboy offense was the simplest offense they had seen all year. He would not be able to say that about a Shanahan run offense.
0 = The number of Super Bowls the Eagles have won.

You and me both
THe only thing worse than watching that Eagles game was watching Jerry say “Me and wade will have a heart to heart and fix this.” All this talk about continuity is garbage if the only things that are going to be continued are heartless, undisciplined play and a bunch of excuses. Jerry needs to look at the strides Atlanta, Miami and Baltimore made and make a move NOW!!!
