Paging Jerry Jones
How does an organization go from Troy Aikman to Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, Drew Henson and Tony “Big Game” Romo? Or from Michael Irvin to Joey Galloway, Rocket Ismail, Antonio Bryant, Terry Glenn, Terrell Owens and now Roy E. Williams? I'll give you a hint, his initials are the same letter and he shares the first name with a former television sitcom star from New York.
I will give Jerry this, we have been somewhat successful with our running backs . I mean, not counting the seasons dwindled away by the likes of Troy Hambrick and Julius "One Cut" Jones.
Don’t get me wrong, the Cowboys are heading in the right direction. Tony Romo is a very good quarterback for the majority of the regular season. He’s the ‘Marley and Me’ of the NFL. Everybody loves him. We watch him make mistake after mistake, but ultimately forgive him. Then the ending comes and Marley dies, leaving everyone in the theatre empty and upset. The same can be said for Romo. He’s very good for 2/3 of the season. Then December and the playoffs come and he starts throwing 40 yard bombs blindly to Ed Reed or starts coughing up the ball like T.O. does pain killers. I mean, you really have to wonder if Gurode greases the ball. I’ve always had a suspicion that he wanted to be quarterback, and honestly, who wouldn’t want to listen to Owens cry for the ball 20 times a game?
We may soon be rid of Owens though. Hey, I’d much rather have Roy E. Williams complain about not getting the ball enough at 9 million and 27, than Owens at 10 million and 35. Jerry gift wrapped two first round picks, one this year, which is top 16, and one next season, which will in all likelihood be top 10 after a year of disarray and preparing for the departure of Wade, for a guy who we could have signed in free agency after this season. The only possible reasoning for this deal is that Jerry was helping bail out the motor companies the best that he could. Things are looking up for Ford!
Luckily, we got 19 receptions from Permian Roy. Without those 19 receptions, we surely would have finished 7-9, maybe even 6-10. Then we’d be stuck with Crabtree or Jeremy Maclin, whew, that was a close one. Be sure to thank Jerry for that.
This all would be mute if Jerry would do the right thing and fire "Not Bum" Phillips. His coaching is like a car with no engine. Sure we’re there and trying to get it going, but the car is stuck and not going anywhere. Do we really want to open the new Cowboys stadium with Mr. Stay Puft coaching?
We need Shanahan to bring some new energy to this team. Not only will he revitalize most of the players, but he’ll solve the offensive woes of the Sparanoless Jason Garrett. Then Jerry can get his man, Dom Capers in here to run the 3-4 and suddenly the Cowboys are looking good. Hey, Shanahan even likes T.O., maybe he could salvage another season or two out of him. Maybe he could solve Romo’s turnover troubles. Maybe.
But before Shanahan and the maybes, Jerry needs to fix the definite problem: Wade Phillips. To have any chance at accomplishing something this year, we cannot have a team go through the season waiting for the next head coach. If Jerry sticks to his guns and drags out another season of Wade and Jason Garrett, we are in for another long, playoffless season.

This team is built to win now. Those WRs would take a couple of years to develope which would be counter-productive. And RW is actually a very good WR but struggled with injury towards the end of this season.
And on Wade. I completely agree. Any coach that goes 22-12 in his first two years with the team needs to be fired. That is completely inexcusable, I mean its only an average of 11 wins a year. Just awful.

Wade got off to a 12-1 start... With most of Parcels' assistants
Since then, (including last year’s playoff loss) his team has gone 11-10. That’s .500 football over the past 21 games in which he has coached. Sorry, but all sarcasm aside, that disserves a firing.
The 12-1 start was an aberration as teams around the league were slowly figuring out how the new-look Cowboys worked. Once they did, Phillips and company never readjusted and the 11-10 run they’ve been on is much more indicative of what we can expect going forward.

it warrants an immediate firing.

There are a ton of receivers who are as good as Roy and cheaper and the point was that the trade was unnecessary since he was going to be a free agent anyway and we need the first rounder.
And yeah, your sarcasm is well deserved. Wade is a great coach, I mean, he’s never won a playoff game and went from 13-3 to 9-7 to God knows what next season. Lets sign him to an extension!
by Beasticon on Jan 6, 2009 4:03 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Of the receivers we could have gotten, who is better and cheaper than Roy?
And we got him mid-season in the hopes he could have revitalized a struggling offense, which he would have been able to do were it not for his injury.

The trade was ridiculous
if you’re trying to argue it was worth trading 2 1st rounders for a guy who we could sign in free agency this off season, you should join Wade on his staff.

this team was built to win now, not next season
If it was me, would I have made the trade during the season, nope. Once training camp started, I would never of made the trade
Do I think the cowboy should of addressed the receiver position during the draft last year or free agency, yes. Terry Glenn wasn’t coming back…that was crystal clear to me, regardless of what jerry said. Again I never believe anything Jerry says.
Do I think Jerry made the trade because of the bad press Pac-rat suspension was getting at the time and that Jerry wanted some good press to counter it, absolutely yes….
Do I think they gave up too much for Williams, nope. I mention it a million times here, you weren’t getting a pollished top lead type receiver at 26 years old entering his prime for just a late first rounder as many thought we could of gotten him for during the draft. It’s essentually a first round pick, other than Crabtree, and we wouldn’t have a chance at him, who will need two years to develop, what other receiver is worthy of a mid first round pick in next years draft, I say none. We had two third rounders this year in the draft and we basically swapped two later round picks. So giving up the 20th pick and a third rounder for a lead receiver is a pretty good deal, and Williams is T.O’s replacement when he’s done. Hopefully that is within the next three month’s.
Just ask yourself, what would you give up to get Crabtree, who is a top five pick next year, you wouldn’t get there with a 20th pick, a third rounder and a sixth rounder, thats for sure, not even close.
Williams was a free agent but Detroit could of just Franchised him, so Dallas may not have a chance of getting next year either..
by Deke on Jan 6, 2009 11:10 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think with the 1st we could have landed a receiver who could make an impact right away
like Maclin or maybe Harvin, or draft a safety with that pick. and the 3rd rounder we traded could have been used on a backup for Romo.
Detroit wouldn’t franchise RW. He was already complaining about being second fiddle to CJ and wasn’t putting up the numbers this season that would warrant a franchise tag, even before his trade to Dallas.
by Beasticon on Jan 6, 2009 11:22 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
you know he wouldn't of been franchised how
Williams wasn’t complaining in Detroit at all, never asked to be traded. Never said one thing in detroit, he was the constant professional. Detoit had three different Qb’s playing this year, and a poor offensive line.. Calvin Johnson is one of those rare freaks of a receiver.
We Should of drafted a safety, Guard and a speed receiver last year…but jerry wanted to play the GM, lets trade down all day. We will be drafting those three positions this year…
Receivers drafted usually don’t make a big impact the first year or even second…if they do, its early and they fade after week eight of the seaosn. Certainly not even expected to be the number one or two on an established team day one, Detroit isn’t an establiched team, so yes, Dallas, established, so it’s not happening..
Other than Crabtree, there isn’t a receiver worthy of a top twenty pick next year, and unless there is a top notch skill wise receiver, and those are usually very rare, I wouldn’t waste a first round pick on a receiver in any draft… you can get very good receivers in the second and third rounds. Alot of these receivers in the draft are along way from being a polisherd receivers, most never work out in the pros

give me a break
A receiver that was there for one year, Calvin Johnson, after a rookie season and back problems during his rookie season was the lead receiver heading into his second year, he was not… and six games into the second season with Williams, williams was traded. PLease dont tell me he was the lead receiver when williams was there. he was not… Johnson is now, he wasn’t the lead reciever when Williams was there.
An other than speculation from the media about Williams wanted out, mosty because he was late to voluntary workouts because he missed his flight, there isn’t anything that Williams said to the media about wanting out of detroit, he said the opposite when asked.. that’s was the media speculation…..
He is the future number one receiver here when T.O is cut, that’s why he was brought here, for the future…

Doubted that NE would have franchised Matt Cassel. Reports are they plan on franchising Cassel.
Roy W. was going to be a FA- There are two teams in our division who need a #1 WR. It was worth keeping him away from them and solidifying our team. We didn’t want to get in to a bidding war.

same thing they said about NE
No way they tie up 25 milliion in one postion.. Even if he was franchised they could have resigned him or let him hit FA which would have caused a bidding war.
"Protect the Romo, Save the Cowboys!!"
by Wmillion on Jan 6, 2009 1:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
no one said that about NE
in fact, most people said they WOULD franchise him so they had insurance for Brady and could trade Cassel if Brady heals in time.
Detroit doesn’t need a WR and wouldn’t franchise him, especially since he was already getting ticked off at them.
by Beasticon on Jan 6, 2009 1:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Again in what context
Chad Johnson wanted out, Bolden wanted out, Randy Moss wanted out of Raiderland. All of them made public comments all during the offeseason about wanting out of their situation.
And remember, we’re talking about the Detroit lions here, Milen is the only front office staff let go, so you never know if Detroit wouldn’t of franchised him for another year.
Roy Williams made no comment pubically during the offseason, training camp about wanting out of detroit, not one word. Yet apparently after a comment clearly after a loss loss in which he got three catches and he thought he could of contributed more, He was frustrated about losing a game, and to you that is somehow he’s ticked off, a second fiddle and just wants outs. You made a huge leap there….
If Cassels is franchised, then that might be a sign that Brady’s knee isn’t where it should be. for one, I never thought the Patriots would franchise him, since doing so would make Cassels a higher paid Qb than brady and that it would cost nearly thirty million for two Qb’s on the roster in cap space, but New England has quite a bit of cap space to work with, but even if they trade him, they wont get a first rounder for a one year wonder, his body of work just isn’t there…but in the NFL, I’m sure some stupid team would give them a good offer…Cleveland will probably put one of their Qb’s on the market, not named Quinn too, decreasing Cassels trade value more
by Deke on Jan 6, 2009 1:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Cassel wold make 14 million, Brady 15 million.
and no one would trade for Andersen.
They probably would get a first rounder for Cassel from a team like Minnesota, etc.

New England has the option of placing the franchise tag on Cassel, but that move would cost upwards of $12 million dollars. Combined with Brady’s $14.62M cap number, nearly 20% of New England’s 2009 salary cap would be tied into two quarterbacks.
Brady makes more.
by Beasticon on Jan 6, 2009 3:18 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That would mean the Patriots would have about $29 million in salary-cap space tied up in two quarterbacks, with Brady earning almost $15 million and Cassel guaranteed over $14 million.

hey Beast....do your homework before you go ranting....will ya...
seriously….anything to enhance your argument is your technique i see….We had no shot at Crabtree, nor Maclin by the time this years draft rolls along…Giving up what should have been a late 1st and a 3rd is relately cheap for a front line WR with 5 years under his belt….I know for a fact SEVERAL people on this site were looking to trade our 1st AND so much more than a third to get this same Roy Williams DURING last years draft….I have no ill feelings towards the deal, and it should have helped us to progress further this year….BUT one Jason Garrett was given a plate full of Filet Mignon, and decided to make hamburger out of it….plain and simple…
He (Williams legit #2 WR) was needed this past season though….no waiting till after season ,and entering bidding wars for his services…

I said we probably wouldn’t have a chance at Crabtree.
Maclin is a mid first rounder, so we would have a shot at him.
You talk about how great Roy Williams is.
The man has had one 1,000 yard season in his entire career. He has only played all 16 games once. He is not worth what they are paying him or the picks they gave up for him.

btw….Maclin would have been my target as well…IF we didn’t trade our pick, and I knew we were going 9-7……I still believe Maclin will go long before we could’ve gotten him…..By the time it’s all said and done……And even if he doesn’t, We’re in win now mode, and i’d rather have Williams over Maclin going into next season……Maclin will be the better pro long term though…IMO

I would rather trade out of #1…. ….none of these QB’s are worth the #1 pick….heck….IMO, I wouldn’t draft one in the top 10….Detroit should trade down their #1 overall a few spots, and take a top DE-pass rusher, LB, CB, or dare i say WR ???….lol….Calvin Johnson and Michael Crabtree would look pretty damn sweet………then choose a QB at #18, if at all….much better QB value later…
