Amendola Gone!

S-T is reporting that Danny Amendola has been signed by the, wait for it......Eagles.

Ouch.  I hope this doesn't come back to bite the Cowboys.  I had hoped with another offseason under his belt Danny would grow into a reliable posession type receiver.  I think he may actually blossom in the system the Eagles run.

Anyway, I wish him the best as he seems like a great kid.

he was overrated by Cowboys fans to begin with

Believe me, if he had any kind of potential, the Cowboys wouldn’t have let him go.

in a game situation… like some third downs this season… before we let him leave

You know... in the offseason I swore it was all

white hype, the unexplainable love affair some fans had with this kid.

but seeing how this offensive staff REFUSED to give Felix / Tashard chances until they had too, maybe there was something to this kid.

the hype was for a wes welker 2.0

wes welker broke out last year for 100+ catches as a third down machine… thats what i was hoping to find in amdendola, a texas tech kid with good hands and quick in and out of breaks… he also had one hell of a highlight reel

by CowboysFan4Life on Jan 6, 2009 9:58 AM CST up reply actions

Wasn't he supposed to be a slower, smaller, Welker?

I never really understood the hype with him, since I didn’t think he provided anything that Crayton or Hurd didn’t do better. Especially after watching him in the preseason. I think he can be a solid NFL player, but I just didn’t see him cracking the Cowboys lineup. Now, with Roy Williams here, there’s almost no chance of it. Between injuries and scheme, I think he can make the Philly squad.

by Baked Potato Soup on Jan 6, 2009 10:03 AM CST reply actions

I completely agree.

ust never understood the love affair cowboy fans had with this small, slow posession receiver in Amendola. didn’t come close to the quickness or speed Welker has

by Deke on Jan 6, 2009 10:07 AM CST up reply actions

Amendola

Was nothing special he was just slow, small, and not all that quick.. I would rather see Austin and Tellus with more opportunities.

by Wmillion on Jan 6, 2009 10:27 AM CST reply actions

Austin is starting to look like the real thing

as in a guy who can challenge T.O. and Roy Williams for throws. He was injured a lot but when he played, he got open more consistently short and deep, than any other Cowboys WR. He averaged 21 yards a catch. That’s big time.

And people are still fantasizing about Amendola.

by Rafael Vela on Jan 6, 2009 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

Autin needs to stay healthy for a change

but Dallas still needs to draft another quick speed receiver, some one that can get off the line and stretch the field….

Williams was brought in to be the replacement for T.O, that we all understand. Just hope that’s sooner than later

by Deke on Jan 6, 2009 11:53 AM CST up reply actions

Speed is never bad..

Give me a WR with KR/PR ability or CB with KR/PR ability..

I'm with you.

I bet he has a decent career, much like other WRs the Cowboys gave up to early on (Orande Gadsen, Jimmy Smith, Jerheme Urban). I wish this team would make use of role players instead of depending on the money guys. Where we have no room to build talent, other teams do.

George Teague did it all.

Letting Amendola go

is more a result of bringing RW in, rather than giving up on the kid’s talent. Somebody had to go, and they’ve invested more in developing Stanback.

George Teague did it all.

by Aaron Novinger on Jan 6, 2009 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

My point was

that it’s not always good to give up on a WR prospect so soon. That is a position that can be developed. The reason I mentioned Jimmy Smith is because he developed into somebody that can be counted on, and the Cowboys let him go to another team.
I’m not saying that Amendola is a godsend or anything, but I don’t think basing your offense on star WRs is productive. It’s stupid in my opinion, and a waste of money.

George Teague did it all.

Danny Amendola

Sorry guys. But somehow I’m just not seeing it.

Yes, our WR corps may look better than Philly’s, but let’s not get carried away and think that Amendola is gonna leap frog any of the current Eagles’ receivers.

The only way I can see it happening is if the Philadelphia front office decides to cut some salary and release Curtis or Brown.

And don’t even say Special Teams.

Amendola’s not better than Jackson, Quentin Demps or JR Reed.

I think those that lament over losing Amendola

do so because this team has no legitimate posession WR. Sure, Witten is awesome on 3rds, but the offense would open up if there was a sure-handed, little, do-everything WR on the roster.
All you know-it-alls get all pissy that people had hope in Amendola. Well, then…where’s the future of the possession WR on this team? Is it all in the hands of Crayton?
Personally, I’d like to see them bring in somebody with some moves, somebody that can make people miss in the open field. I’m talking about WR, so do be annoying and say "well, they have Felix, or well, they have Witten.
The Cowboys need a go-to guy at WR.

George Teague did it all.

"Protect the Romo, Save the Cowboys!!"

by Wmillion on Jan 8, 2009 12:11 AM CST up reply actions

Why do you guys think that?

He’s a really good ST coverage guy and was edging out Austin and even pushing Crayton for slot time this year.

I like Hurd. He must stay.

Plus, other teams may view him as damaged goods coming off IR. Won’t take too much to resign him.

George Teague did it all.

by Aaron Novinger on Jan 8, 2009 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

We should keep 5

If we decide to keep 6, I would rather get a project WR who may be a little raw, but has speed and upside.. Hurd would be lucky to catch 15 balls here next year. Depth chart is stacked at WR.

It is a good thing for Hurd.

"Protect the Romo, Save the Cowboys!!"

by Wmillion on Jan 8, 2009 11:45 AM CST up reply actions

With our fingers crossed

our starting WRs stayed healthy this year and were simply not reliable. The backups did nothing to push them because of injuries and $$$.

I agree, a developmental guy with upside is key, but he’s gotta play ST. If he’s not a return man, then he has to battle Hurd for that gunner spot.

George Teague did it all.

by Aaron Novinger on Jan 8, 2009 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

I meant a 3rd down guy not named Witten.

A small WR—the Cowboys have a bunch of big, tall guys. I think by mixing up the position with guys of different statures, it helps create mismatches—much in the same way the Giants have been doing with Moss and Steve Smith. The Redskins this past year did the opposite by bringing in big WRs to mix with Moss and Randle-El.

5’9" 187 WR/PR with <4.4 speed. That, and another CB/PR would really solidify 3 positions that we thought we’d be deep at going into this year. Fact is, those guys sure turn lots of ankles, pull lots of groins, and such.

We need some moves on the outside. Maybe that will force the OC to throw more screens at the blitzes.

George Teague did it all.

by Aaron Novinger on Jan 8, 2009 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

Sub 4.4 guys don't grow on trees

And the ones that exist go in the first round.

by Mandmeisterx on Jan 8, 2009 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

Donnie Avery didn't.

Desean Jackson didn’t.
Eddie Royal didn’t.

I don’t expect the Cowboys to spend their 2nd on a WR, but there are guys out there with speed that will be available later.

George Teague did it all.

by Aaron Novinger on Jan 8, 2009 11:12 AM CST up reply actions

No receiver did this year.

It’s not a common occurrence. Most people thought of Jackson as more of a novelty than an every down receiver. Avery and Royal had the dropsies in college. I don’t really expect much out of any of these three once people have some film on them for next year. Royal’s season isn’t nearly as impressive if you take away the Deangelo Hall game. Not to mention great 40 times do not a great slot guy make. I highly doubt Welker runs a 4.4, but he’s incredibly quick in and out of his breaks and he has great hands. If you can catch the ball and have blazing speed, you’re going to be a first round pick. Guys fall to the later rounds because they are projects.

by Mandmeisterx on Jan 8, 2009 11:42 AM CST up reply actions

Projects are welcome in Dallas.

Obviously, the guys ahead of him will give room for them to try an alternative to Stanback.
