TO's "lack of production"

Ed Werder and the like seem to be justifying getting rid of TO based on his production decrease, among other things.  Say what you will about his age and speculate all you want about the "down-turn" of a players career, but don't single him out because of a decrease.   Here's why:

  • The Cowboys offense as a whole passed for 400 less yards this year.
  • Offensive giveaways increased by 37%.
  • First downs decreased by 21%.

Now that we've covered that the offense itself had a huge decrease, let's talk about the positions that actually saw a statistical increase in 2008 - our 2nd TE.  Bennett outperfomed Fasano in that role statistically.  That's it.  No other starters increased production.  Not our 2nd receiver, not our RBs, and certainly not our QB.

So why single this guy out?

A more qualitative observation

I saw less dominating play in general from Owens this year. Some of that was scheme – lots of balls at the LOS, lots of passes that weren’t designed to give him RAC yards. However, he also just seemed less dangerous – not the weapon he used to be.

The expectations on him are very high – he is to be a difference maker, and he wasn’t much of one this year. Some of that is opportunity, and some of it may be a decline in skill.

you can't go back and forth...

“Some of that was scheme – lots of balls at the LOS, lots of passes that weren’t designed to give him RAC yards. However, he also just seemed less dangerous – not the weapon he used to be.”

you can’t just say he “seemed” less dangerous but some of it was scheme… he obviously still has it, because when he hits top gear, im not sure if anyone in the league can catch him even at this point in his career… it was scheme, and it was our line not allowing romo time in the pocket to get the ball to TO…

one thing im not fond of is TO lack of concentration i guess… or whatever it is that keeps him from catching very catchable balls… one play hell make an amazing catch at full speed without losing a step… the next he’ll drop a 5 yard hitch… what he needs to do is sit in front of a jugz machine until his dropsies go away…

besides that, i think hes a great athlete who just loves to compete… and with his size and speed… uh duh, he should, from a gameplan perspective (including solidifying the oline so romo has time), be apart of more plays

Not all scheme

He got fewer chances, but I think he looked less dangerous when he got his chances. He still has great top gear, but I think he is a little less explosive.

It’s not going back and forth – it is suggesting that there is more than one cause of a situation.

I’ve pretty much been a TO supporter, but he did seem a little disinterested at times.

Because he is a pain in the azz

and the more he complains, the less he produces and the worse this team does.

If he doesn’t want to be singled out, he needs to learn to stay the hell out of the spotlight.

Wait a minute!

400 yards is not a lot (25 yards per game).

There has to be more data to show that the offense took a nosedive.

I think it lies somewhere in the number of plays gaining 20-yards or more…

Anyone have that data?

BSPN & Dead Turder is always gonna bend their story towards their biased agenda

The Worldwide Leader in $#!+ possess their obvious biases.

They love the Patriots.

They hate the Cowboys.

They love the Spurs.

They hate the Suns.

They love Duke basketball.

They hate Syracuse basketball.

They love Florida football.

They hate The U football.

They love Coach K in b-ball.

They love Tom Brady.

They hate Tony Romo.

They love Wes Welker.

They hate TO.

And on and on and on.

That being said, you know they’re only going to include info/stats that support their subjective story in an effort to sway their brainwashed audience to think negatively of whoever or whomever their bashing.

And that’s the case in the Turder story. They won’t include reasons for the decline in TO’s numbers this season. Or the fact that Romo missed several games while Limp Johnson struggled to get it up.

No way.

That’s why I don’t believe most of what the Turd Man is pimping as breaking news for BSPN, the worldwide leader in $#!+…

TO not the problem

finally a article about the cowboys offensive scheme that make sense. while the cowboys cherry pick the black players who are ills the cowboys organization while the white players are giving a free pass. the dallas main stream media is drinking the kool aid, especially the ft. worth star-telegram’s jennifer engle and randy galloway, they cherry pick which black player who doesn’t jump or skip to their beat needs to go. they want the black players on the cowboys to be robots and smile and stay in their place, while the white player who are probably doing the same thing gets a pass. the accoutablity belong to the coaching staff of coach cupcake and the RHG, who is getting a pass for their lack of leadership. if TO goes, the lack of leadership is still in place. jerry is pulling the strings for the RHG to getting these interviews for perception purposes, it is so obvious, yet the dallas media is drinking the kool aid. i know a lot of cowboy fans who will be boycotting the cowboys, merchandise and all this next season because it is too expensive to dish out hard earned money in this troubled economic times to see a mediocracy on the playing field and no lombardi trophy in 2010. when brian stewart was demoted in his playcalling after the rams game, there was no outcry for the dallas media, there was no outcry from the dallas media to have ray sherman share the playcalling duties, when the offense was stale; despite the fact that deion was saying on nfl network or when deshown townsend , ray lewis, were saying how vanilla the cowboys offense was operating. but let TO tell the truth and the witch hunt is on, it was not until romo stated the obvious after the iggles game that the dallas media started the drinking the kool aid; that when the RHG started getting interviews for coaching opennings in detroit and denver (jerry’s good buddy pat bowlen), prior to romo’s press conference there was no mentioned of the RHG getting a job offer, he was going to be here in big d because he was the head coach in waiting. TO cowboy fans is not the problem the problem on offense is the scheme, when the players on the team so what had happen to stewart and not happenning to the RHG, it became obivious of the desparity of treament in the coaching ranks. once again TO is not the problem it’s the scheme which does not ulitize it most talented players (felix jones in the first deadskin game-had 0 touches), where should that accountability be focus on, once again the dallas sports media sleep at the wheel. ESPN is intitutional racsim at it’s best, the more things change the more things remain the same.

I never like to go there unless it's obvious, but

you have some great points. I guess what stood out to me is how untouchable Witten was when everything went down.

The common opinion was that Witten had no fault in this. I can understand how people would make that assumption given T.O.’s history. But the way everybody jumped on Newman when he opened his mouth was disturbing.

All Newman said was “whoever the snitch is, he has to go.” He never named Witten, and everyone took the stance of “how dare you speak of Witten.”

Newman has never been a bad guy, but as soon as he eluded to the possibility of Witten being at fault, he was labeled a cancer.

Race, schmace

Witten is a man’s man and I wouldn’t trade him for 50 TO’s. Color has nothing to do with heart and Witten played with a host of injuries, never bitched to the media and did everything he possibly could to help this team win. I wouldn’t care if he was green, he’d still be one of the best football players I’ve seen in my life.

by Billito on Jan 9, 2009 9:10 AM CST up reply actions

Witten is a great player and seems to be a good guy.

But the same can be said of Newman. Why was his word so quickly dismissed? Why was he made a villain for going against the popular belief of people who have never been near the Cowboys locker room.

All I said is that I am disturbed at how untouchable Witten is. They throw a shield up around him like he’s Sarah Palin or something.

It’s also funny how everyone on this blog thinks Jason Witten can whoop Superman. I’m waiting for the Chuck Norris superlatives to start spilling out. “Jason Witten cant die of cancer, cancer dies of Jason Witten.” What if he cant bust a grape? What if he’s a chump? I don’t think he is but damn, get off his twig.

Now who's being foolish?

Glory, seriously, you’re going to hate on Witten? Did you watch the games this season? That guy is all heart and maybe you are the one bringing race into this because witten is white. I can’t think of any other reason you would try and bash a guy who has proven to be one of the most selfless, hard working and dedicated guys I’ve ever seen play.

I also don’t think Newman took that much heat and in fact, most people gave him a lot of space despite the fact that he missed a lot of playing time and blew a play in Pittsburg despite getting a fat new contract.

I am very sensitive when people try to throw the race card into football discussions but I can tell you that I judge players based on performance and heart, not skin color. All the guys on this team that piss me off do so because they don’t play to their potential, make consistent bone headed plays on the field or try to divide the locker room.

Believe me, right now I am as pissed at Romo as I am at TO for the way they played this year.

Did Newman specifically name Witten?

Has anybody specifcally said Witten was the guy?

Man no offense but that is just plain wrong.

I dont want to get drawn into a race debate but dont you think that post is a bit over the top. Maybe the reason there was no outcry when Stewart was releived of his playcalling because he was doing a bad job.

Give me a break

ESPN is not about race, but about making “news.” If there was a white pro football player out there who caused as much trouble for his own team or had diahrrea of the mouth or was arrested multiple times, then I’m sure ESPN would cover it for the sake of ratings. Come on…what white players are doing the “same thing” as T.O. or Adam Jones? Off the top of my head, maybe Bill Romonoski back in the day, and he was demonized all the time by ESPN and the media.

I don’t think too many of us on this blog minded when T.O. criticized the offensive scheme. We agreed! Whitey agreed! If anything, it was that he did it on national TV.

Stewart was obviously in over his head, and you think Garrett hasn’t been criticized all season long, then you haven’t been paying attention. And frankly, I think the city of Dallas and Cowboy fans have a soft spot for Garrett as a former Cowboy who won a couple critical games. But that warm and fuzzy feeling has obviously worn off.

Look at the way Cory Proctor was treated by the media and this blog all season long. Obviously, Proctor is not very good but he was probably trying his best. But he was still blasted all year long for being an inadequate offensive lineman.

I doubt that's the case

because history says TO has done the same thing before in two other places to the point that he was suspended by his team. by the way the QB on that team was black.

Witten has proven himself to be a selfless player. He plays hurt, heck he had a broken jaw and he played the next week. broken ribs, can’t move, can’t breath, no problem I go out and play. he blocks and keeps quiet and he catches passes and makes big plays when needed. he doesn’t seek attention. he just does what he is told to do. Its not because of black or white and that’s what you making out to be. Have you ever heard witten complain about anything? talk about the team or anything in a negative way? have you ever read anything controversial about him? dang he even signed his contract extension quietly without a lot of fan fare.

so its not black or white thing. Its a TO thing. controversy seems to follow him, because that’s what he likes. he likes the attention. he likes to be the center piece and he nags, whines and complains when he is not.

but you must have also read that bobby carpenter is getting a lot of criticism for sucking so bad, yet James gets all the accolades. and romo has endured his own share of criticism from the media, so don’t try to make it as if he has been babied by them.

and proof is in the pudding. Stewart sucked. when Wade took over the defense played a lot better. Stewart wasn’t dragged over the hot coals, nor overly criticised. it was the defense that was criticised and at the center of it actually it was Wade being criticised since the thought and talk was always about Wade coming in to make us a dominant defense.

oh by the way, the media has been criticising Garrett for his play calling, lack of imaignation, lack of adjustment and oh by the way the media is all over the fact that Jerry is letting Garrett leave after doing so much to keep him here last year. don’t twart the facts.

so cherry picking some specific items to make a case for racism without looking at everything else and all the other items is not a good thing. if stewart was all that good and believe be NFL GMs and owners would know, his name would be mentioned for head coaching jobs, but no one is knocking his door down. and by the way Ray Sherman of the cowboys is getting interviews for head coaching jobs and he is black, so if you are going to make it racism then you must also present the rest of the story.

its not about black or white. its about winning and yes its about accountability.
