Lombardi: Garrett Running Strong for the Lions Job

From the National Football Post:

I hear the order in Detroit today is Jim Schwartz of the Titans, Jason Garrett of the Cowboys and Leslie Frazier of the Vikings.

Michael Lombardi also claims that Raheem Morris will be one of the three candidates to receive a second interview in Denver.  Garrett may or may not be a finalist there.

Update:  The Detroit Free Press is now quoting Lombardi that Garrett is, "the guy [the Lions] think can turn their franchise around."

Garrett

if he goes, what do you think happens to the OC position who is hired, RAF? First

The Cowboys Could Promote Ray Sherman

thought I said days ago that I thought Al Saunders would get a look. Still do.

If Garrett leaves

I think Jerry and Shanahan would start some serious discussions regarding him being HC here next season.

it makes no sense to wait, because there’s no way you could keep that news secret.

That's why Jerry should hire Shanahan now...consult with Wade...

I KNOW Garretts presentation to other teams hinges on him bringing in Capers to run his defense….I say we beat him to the punch….Fire Garrett and Stewart right now….Hire Capers as D consult….Wade has the option…either stay on as DC or hit the highway…..then hire Shanny..

How do you know who Shanahan wants as DC?

I’m sure Garrett isn’t the only coach who wants Capers as his DC.

He didn’t sign Joe DeCamillis to change the staff around HIM.

Romeo Crennel?

Better DC, then HC?

Romeo Crennel is very good friends with Eric Mangini

you might see Crennel being rehired in Cleveland as the defensive coordinator, funny as it may seem…

I was thinking that..

Hoping we can slide in there if JG left and Shanahan was hired.. I remember reading that Romeo would consider, depending on the coach. To bad Wade and Shanahan aren’t friends.

I really hope this is the case

If Garrett leaves, I think we need to make this move. No sense in having romo learn another offense and keeping wade around.

While i didn’t like his inability to make adjustments last year, garrett is certainly an intelligent coach and hes managed to handle the whole romo/TO/witten thing well. I have no problem with keeping him if he isn’t offered another hc position. I think he will be a fixture in this league for a long time.

Just curious, Raf...

Why do you think Dallas should promote Ray Sherman? I’m asking because I don’t know. Has Sherman ever been a play-calling OC?

Please enlighten me, sir.

Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith, two first round picks, enough cap room to sign a big name free agent, low expectations, a nice stadium, a patient owner.

by Wmillion on Jan 8, 2009 6:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sold on Bradford

I’m not saying he’s bad, but I’m not sure he’s good.

I Tivo’ed OU’s game against Missouri and slowed some of it down. There were plays where the guy had, literally, eight seconds in the pocket before he released the ball.

It was like flag football. He will NEVER have protection like that in the NFL, even if he winds up on a good team. NFL defenses are too fast and too talented.

That doesn’t mean he’s a bad QB, but I didn’t see him ever have to make a quick read and accurate toss with a blitzer coming free, the type of play NFL QBs have to make a dozen times every week.

by Rafael Vela on Jan 8, 2009 6:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I saw him make a throw for the go ahead TD vs. Mizzou..

With a blitzer in his face.. It was $$

by Rafael Vela on Jan 8, 2009 4:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I bring this up because it is confusing to me that he would want to do that,

it is out of character for JJ to do that, I feel that this is MSM and fan driven because MS is the shiny new toy and WP is like Rodney Dangerfield. I really think the one positive that can be made from JG leaving is that WP gets to choose a OC that fits how he would like the Offense to run.

by NCCowboy on Jan 8, 2009 4:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not to say that he could not make it work with JG but his position and the way he was

brought in before WP as a package deal could have been a factor in how hands on he could be in talking to JG. Especially if all the talk he hears is that JG will replace him soon because JJ would not be able to make him wait for a HC position beyond 1-2 years.

Shanahan for OC ....SOB for DC...oh, and HC I guess

I look for JG to leave. Let’s face it, JJ gave him a huge contract and apparently is still ready to see him on his way. I must say though, everyone on opposing defenses knew exactly what 8, 22, and 88 were going to do but few could stop them. Predictability is somewhat overrated when you execute on the DL and OL. Therein lies our problems for consistency, IMHO.

Keys80 is a playmaker listener

You should invite Irvin on here to say that for himself since thats all he said, all day long. Things have changed, athletes have changed things have changed, if you want an example of you know what I am going to do but you still can t stop it attempt, its the last year with Parcells. He refused to adjust and we were just abused many times over and over.

I realize your point was execution, and thats fine and dandy, but you have to put your players in the best possible position to execute, and their in lies the defect. Not that he was not attempting but apparently there were some shematic defencies that were exploited.

by Elwood62 on Jan 8, 2009 6:50 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Forget Shanahan

I don’t think he’s coming here, AND..he’s no miracle worker. I think he has a good offensive mind, but he hasn’t won or even made it to any Super Bowls since Elway left.

What would he accomplish in Dallas that he hasn’t done in Denver since Elway left? He had carte blanche in Denver to do just about anything necessary to make them a winner again. He was HC and GM. He’s not going to have that kind of control in Dallas.

If WP is replaced, JJ will go with a ‘Garrett-type’ guy. Young, innovative up and coming.

His GM side cost him

The “hasn’t done anything since Elway” doesn’t really mean anything to me. The guy has consistently had one of the best offenses in the league with 3-4 different QB’s and even more RB’s since Elway left. He’s failed becaused he’s a terrible GM and hasn’t had the defensive talent. Dallas has the offensive talent and more talent on defense than he had the past 5 yrs in Denver.

by StillHateTheGiants on Jan 9, 2009 11:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, he's moreso done a poor GM job drafting defensive players

Drafting Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler, and Eddie Royal earn him stellar marks. But then again, that also reveals more of his expertise on the offensive side of the ball.

Outside of the trade for Champ Bailey and the drafting of DJ WIlliams, Shanny’s defensive acquisitions are definite head scratchers.

Eb Ekuban? Gerald Warren (no longer with the team). Michael Myers (is he still in the NFL). DeWayne Robertson? Drafting Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder — although maybe we should give them more than two years, but the early returns have not been productive enough to make a difference on D.

Let’s all understand this much. Mike Shanahan is an OFFENSIVE Mastermind. That’s his specialty.

Yep,

This last year he was as predictable as a porn movie, but he lit it up last year. That’s what makes me think he has what it takes, he was in his soph slump this year. I believe he will light it up again next year….if he’s with the Cowboys.

If he goes to the Lions, he will have to start from ground zero. That’s why I think he’ll take it if offered. It will be his baby, and he has the chance to make it just like he wants it.

"He has a peculiar felicity of expression." John Adams

Why has everyone pooh poohed the idea of Shanahan as on the new OC if Garrett leaves?

Has Shanahan unequivocally said that he would never consider an OC job for 2009? If Dallas doesn’t hire him in this role do you know who will? New England, (assuming they lose Josh Mc Daniels) that’s who.

Belichick has spoken very highly of Shanahan, saying that by far he is the toughest offensive strategist to prepare a defense for. This is arguably the best coach of the modern era saying this about him. What are the chances that he’d have something similar to say about Garrett?

Forget Shanahan and here is why

why is everyone so in love with Shanahan? is it because he is such a big name? lets not forget he won two superbowls with Elway at the helm. Elway is one of the top 5 all time QBs. after Elway he compiled a 91-69 record with 1-4 playoff record. that’s not too impressive for a magician as everyone makes him to be.

Plus, I don’t think our current personnel, which are signed long term and have taken us several years to draft, sign and place match his offensive scheme.

I consider Holmgren a better candidate. he is between Wade and Parcells in personality. The WCO offense he runs doesn’t need the type of OL men Shanahan used in his offense. he likes to run the ball (ala with green and alexander).

Then lets consider capers for DC.

I also think with TO and Romo they are better suited to a WCO, that relies on YAC and that’s TOs strength. short passing game and a mobile QB and attack down field when have the opportunity (which should cut down on his forced throws).

I am not too hot on saunders because his game and scheme was failing in KC and failed in Redskins land. I don’t like Martz because its kind of a gimmiky timing offense that requires specific type of personnel and is not adaptable (thus him failing in couple of places).

now, if Norv becomes available? there is an idea!? but not gonna happen since SD some how managed to win the division and a playoff game.
