Reading the tealeaves

The problems of the 2008 Dallas Cowboys go well beyond any one part of the organization.  The players did not play as well as they could or should.  The coaches failed in one way or another, and the ownership made poor decisions from January 2007 through now.

I will characterize Jerry in the following four ways in order to piece together the clues that the owner of the Dallas Cowboys has left in the wake of the season:

1. He is a smart, shrewd man (he did not make his millions by being an idiot).

2. He wants to win another Super Bowl as soon as possible.

3. He wants to win his way, and be intimately involved in the success.

4. He really likes the limelight

Jason Garrett has shown Jerry enough to make Jerry believe that he cannot be the next coach of the Cowboys.  This is simple to deduce, as Mr. Jones would have spoken with Jason prior to this off-season and told him that he wanted Garrett here.  The fact that Jason is interviewing in Detroit and Denver speaks volumes as to how Garrett has fallen from Mr. Jones' grace.

I could speculate as to why, but it does not matter.  That Jason is interviewing with Jerry's blessing is all that matters.

Jerry is busy making the Cowboys a more attractive franchise for the next coach.  By removing the dead weight and questionable characters from the coaching staff and amongst the players, Jerry Jones is adding value to the Dallas Cowboys through subtraction.

Releasing Adam Jones and not making an attempt to resign Tank Johnson are but the beginning of the off-season purge.  Since Jerry's characteristics include being an integral part of the franchise, it would shock me if Terrell Owens were to be released this off-season.

From a performance standpoint, it makes little to no sense to cut Owens after a down year.  As noted above, there was more wrong with this franchise than just the performance of the players, so making some changes could easily result in Owens (as well as other players) returning to form in 2009.  If Owens were really the divisive figure that he is made out to be, Jerry has picked his side, permitting Jason Garrett to go carpet bagging for another job.

One thing continues to puzzle me, however, utilizing the given characteristics listed for Jerry Jones above.

Why is Wade still the coach?

While Wade definitely conforms to Jerry's third characteristic, unless Mr. Jones believes Wade Phillips gives him the best chance to win now, Phillips' tenure should be terminated before preparation for next season begins in earnest.  That Jerry believes Wade gives the Cowboys their best chance to win a Super Bowl in the near future flies in the face of Jones' first characteristic: Jerry is smart.

The rumblings from Jerry's office have revolved around Wade's lack of toughness and his soft style of coaching all season.  This would suggest that Jerry knows the Cowboys need a more heavy-handed approach from the coaches, and his post-season press conference confirms that.

After all, the team quit on Wade against the Eagles (the Giants in New York and against the Rams too).  That is not Wade's fault.  This collection of Cowboys players lack heart, pride, drive, and need a kick in the pants, not a pat on the back.

So here is one theory as to what will happen later this month or in February based on the breadcrumbs Jerry has left.  Wade will be removed from the head coach position as a result of a move that Jerry requests.  As with the hiring of Wade in 2007, the candidate that Jerry covets is now available and nobody is approaching him for a coaching position.

The Cowboys continue to be a media darling despite their status as "also-ran".  Taking Jerry's fourth characteristic into account, when Dallas is no longer in the news, that is when I expect the move.  Somewhere around the second week after the season finishes and talk of the Super Bowl gives way to premature draft talk.

As to who the mystery candidate is: I have no clue.  There is one, and Jerry has his sights set on him.  The tealeaves say so...

The following question drew and kept me here:
Why is Wade still the coach?

That’s the million dollar question, Scar…

But I do respectfully disagree with your statements…

After all, the team quit on Wade against the Eagles (the Giants in New York and against the Rams too). That is not Wade’s fault.

A top notch coach knows how to press the right buttons physically, mentally, and psychologically. Jimmy Johnson is a great example of that. It’s no coincidence that he majored in psychology as a student-athlete playing football @ the University of Arkansas back in his day.

Great post, though.

Very thought provoking…

Is Dallas' Overall Talent Level Overrated?

When a team quits like the Rams, Ravens, and Philly game — when a team fails totally at special team play — when a team can’t make the playoffs and has a legacy of not winning a playoff game in 13 years; one has to ask the question of the talent level is below par; or, is the talent level as high as so many Cowboy faithful would have you believe? This question is vital because if we continue short term solutions, we will never get back to the championship level. I for one think we need a complete overhaul, and a longer term view of the necessary rebuilding project.

I do not think that the talent on the Cowboys is that overrated. Terrell Owens showed me this season that he can still hurt defenses like few receivers can. Roy Williams will be at least an adequate second receiver, while Miles Austin is developing into a legitimate deep threat.

Marion Barber III, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice are all starting quality running backs. If Garrett can maximize the touches Felix gets, save Barber III until the fourth quarter (when he is most effective), and utilize Choice intelligently throughout the game, the Cowboys will have a very formidable backfield. I hope that the offense goes through the running backs next season.

After the running backs, the tight ends should get the ball more. Jason Witten is the best in Cowboys history, and that is quite an accomplishment. Martellus Bennett looks like a rising star, and Jason Garrett should use more two tight end sets next season to maximize the talent at running back and tight end. Hannah caught the coaches eyes and was moved to the 53 before the end of the season.

The lynchpin of the offense is Tony Romo. He is a great quarterback, but needs to be more careful with the football. His struggles, however, can be traced directly to the offensive line.

That is where the Cowboys are weak. The entire team does not need to be overhauled, but the offensive line needs to be replaced piece by piece. As I have noted in other posts, I would really be excited if Dallas could get William Beatty (OT, Connecticut) and Jonathan Luigs (C/G, Arkansas) in the 2009 NFL draft with their second and third round picks.

Those two would instantly upgrade the depth at tackle, guard, and center. By 2010, they could be the backbone of the offensive line. I would like to see a rookie free agent also added for depth, like Jose Valdez (OT/OG, Arkansas).

The defense is strong at cornerback with Terrence Newman (when healthy), Orlando Scandrick, and Mike Jenkins. The outside linebackers are almost as good as the tight ends, with All-Pro DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer heading the group. Greg Ellis is a very serviceable third option. I would move Greg back to defensive end on passing downs.

Other than Jay Ratliff, however, there is once again a dearth of talent along the Cowboys line. Canty regressed in 2008, as did Hatcher. Spears was as inconsistent in 2008 as he was in 2007, and 2006. Bowen is a career back-up. In order to fortify the defensive line, I believe that Dallas would be best served to draft a big nose tackle, like Ron Brace from Boston College or Sammie Lee Hill from Stillman College, and move Ratliff to defensive end on first and/or second downs.

The real weakness of the Cowboys defense, aside from Ratliff, is the middle of the field. It is no coincidence that Bradie James had his best season while Jay at times controlled the middle. Zack Thomas was average, however, and helped James by commanding some attention. The safeties were atrocious all season. I do not see a clear cut bluechip safety in the 2008 NFL draft, so the Cowboys may have to make due with Ken Hamlin and Roy Williams again this season.

I would like to see Dallas spend a late round pick on a speedy linebacker to play the weak inside spot in case Bobby Carpenter does not respond to the role this season. Jason Williams from Western Illinois is light, but explosive and fast. With his 6’3" frame, he could easily add to his 235 pounds with the proper off season conditioning program. My hope is that a fast linebacker could cover an opposing running back or tight end from time to time in order to take opressure off of Hamlin and Williams.

All in all, this Cowboys team has enough talent on the periphery to make a run at the Super Bowl, but the interior of the defense and the offensive line negate much of it. It would be great to add a safety, but if Dallas drafts two great offensive linemen, a nose tackle that demands double teams, and an inside linebacker that can drop effectively into coverage as well as play the run, the Cowboys could be formidable in 2010.

It depends how highly you think of the Cowboy's talent

If you think they are super bowl contenders, they are way overrated.

If you think they are a 9-7 team that cannot win must win games, they are rated just about right
