Observations
There will be two way to look at today's game. Some will say more of the same sloppy Cowboys team,(and their right) some will look at it and hope this lights a spark, and thier right. I hope the latter comes true. Here is what I see. Is there anybody who thinks Austin should not start over Crayton when Williams comes back. I think he proved today that given the oppertunity he can make bigger plays than Crayton. Time to let him start. Has any one seen Ken Hamlin this year? That is starting to look like a very bad contract. Bobby Carpentar is a bust. Flozell had another bad game. Two false starts, one hold, and at least three times beaten by his man to distrupt a play. Time to give him a little help in critical situations, you just cant trust him. Anthony Spencer played well. I think the coaching staff is miss handling Barber's injury big time. I guess they would rather have him at 50% for 15 games, than 100% for 13. I can't tell you what they are thinking. I think it is an easy desicion to go with Choice after watching the two. Barber just isn't healthy. Our deffense is not very good right now. Thank God for Ratliff!!! I know the coaching staff can only do so much and the rest is up to the players to execute, but I can't help feeling we were outcoached here also. The thing is, as the team stands right now it is not a championship team. There are way to many issues. Now I do believe there is enough talent to do some damage, but two thing must happen that havn't in a long time. First the coaching staff must make the proper adjustments, second the players must execute. I'm sorry to say I don't have confidence that either thing will happen consistantly enough to allow this team to win. I HOPE THEY PROVE ME WRONG!!!

I think Flo's time is about up
He still does an adequate job in the run game, but his mobility is NIL, any type of move by the defender and he’s gonna get a penalty or give up a sack. Hopefully the week off will give Barbe some time to heal up, I agree that he’s playing on one leg. Maybe we’ll have all 3 RB’s back after the break.

They must really not trust Choice to handle the blitz.
The only thing that I can think of that would cause them to keep going back to Barber over Choice, as they tried to do last year when he was hurt also, is that they don’t trust Choice in blitz pickup and pass protection. Likewise, Choice hasn’t shown as much ability on the goal line, but with Barber’s health, he hasn’t looked like the old him at times either.
It is getting harder and harder to defend Adams. The prevailing doctrine with him has always been that the penalties were acceptable due to the superior protection that he provides otherwise. This year, we seem to be getting the penalties without the protection. On the other hand, which is worse, 1st and 15 or 20 due to penalty, or 2nd and 15 or 20 and possible fumble due to a sack? As stated though, his part of the bargain needs to be to provide rock solid protection when he’s not committing penalties.
I couldn’t agree more about Hamlin. Last year they blamed Roy W (who wasn’t even playing, but whatever) and the other players at SS for Hamlin’s poor year, but he hasn’t exactly been lighting it up this year, either. I can’t help but think that we would have more turnovers with better safety play. In fact, I think that is the one piece that keeps us from being an elite D – a big time safety.

I couldn't agree more
with the point about a safety. I dissed “Thong” along with everyone else, but Cincy seems to be winning with him…..we need a top tier safety like nobody’s business

Cincy defense is a credit to Mike Zimmer, who I think is an outstanding coach
Zimmer should of been given the head coaching job here when Parcells left

our defense was already built to be a 3-4
and Jerry knew that. By hiring Parcells initially he was committing to the 3-4 long term.

we didn't change to the 3-4 until year three under Parcells
and Zimmer was running it, but Parcells wouldn’t let him unleach blitzes and kept things close to the vest

Zimmer isn't a 3-4 guy
Jerry wanted a 3-4 guy, hence the reason for the Phillips hire.

Zimmer said it wasn't a problem for him
he ran it for two years.
Never should of change from the 4-3 in the first place…

then he should have never hired Parcells
Can’t have it both ways. And even though Zimmer said he could run it, he didn’t have the experience of running it like Phillips and Jones knew that..

I love Zim
…but he’s not HC material any more than Butch Davis or Dave Wannstedt or Norv Turner or Winnie are.

Austin for the start...
I was hoping he’d beat out Crayton in the off-season but I guess coaches weren’t comfortable with that. Maybe they can get a little more coozy with the idea now. I like Williams on one side, Austin on the other and let Crayton shine as the 3wr like he used to.
