BTB Observations
I have been noticing a trend on our beloved blog over the last two weeks. Everyone who reads this web-site knows that there are some posters who are a part of every conversation, every topic, and quite frankly are (almost) as important to this blog as the writers, who by the way are the best around. I post some, not as often as a lot of those guys, but what I have noticed is an influx of new posters over the last two weeks and what they have had to say has been overwhelmingly negative. People who want to fire Wade, cut Romo, get ride of Garrett, be-head Jerry (maybe an exaggeration, but you get the point). Now there have been many people who have been around for a long time and post constantly who also have these feelings, but the inundation of new posters with these feelings has been overwhelming.
My point in bringing this up is that it is very easy for a fan to be critical and demand all sorts of change and claim that Romo sucks, and Wade is a bum, and Jerry is an idiot, because you are putting yourself in a win-win situation. If the team suffers because of the individuals that you call out then you were right all along and the team should be listening to you, someone sign that guy up. If on the other hand the teams wins with these players, well you are a fan of the team and all you really want in the end is a W anyway, so we are good to go.
I think that the positive and glass half-full posters on this site are getting a bad rap, labeled as homers and there is starting to be a significant lean towards the negative, chicken little posts. Let's not all take the easy way out and say that the team stinks and should can everyone, because I am sure each and everyone of you would be right there cheering the team along when (if for you guys) the team makes their run in the playoffs.
Let's Go Cowboys!!!
and Romo and Wade and Garrett and Jerry and apparently Crayton sucks now (or so says Chicken Little), so let's go Crayton

I respectfully disagree.
I think that there is a fair balance of doom and gloom, realists, and all sunshine posters on this board. The fact is that the Cowboys have been struggling since the Green Bay win in 2007, and therefore you are going to have more posts that are critical of the team. They have been 14-12 since then, and play has often been sloppy and disjointed. Given their uneven production, it doesn’t seem unnatural to have more and more posts criticizing them.
Personally, I find it disturbing that questioning the team’s direction or individual players or coaches gets you branded a “hater.” Since we seem to have opposing view points on the matter, chances are that the balance is just about right.

I think that
prior to the Denver loss I would agree that there was a good balance, but not anymore. I has gotten so bad that I can’t read the comments anymore. Over the last week I have read all the write ups and most of the fan posts, but the comments I have stayed away from because of the negativity. I am not happy with the way the team is playing by any means, I think there is a lot that needs to change, but I don’t think those things include a mid-season firing or benching of our stars players or coaches.

I don't have any problem with Wade calling out a player for their play
Pittsburgh’s coach did it two weeks ago with Sweed and Mendenhall, and you seen how they responded.
The players on this team have it too easy. there’s no accountability, no focus, no attention to detail, no leadership, it’s the same crap football every week.

how can you have accountability
when the backups on this team are so awful?? You really think Wade is going to bench a starter when the back up on the bench is far worse??
These players are professionals, not high school or college kids, they have to execute and pay attention to detail for that reason and that reason only, they get paid a lot of money to play the game.

I think to not bench a player who continue to make a mental mistakes because the player behind them isn’t as physically gifted is a mistake. allowing people to continue to make the same mental mistakes over and over again hurts the team. it sets a terrible precedent.
What flo gives you in physical ability, you lose in mental toughness.

i don't think "physically gifted" is the problem
“rookies” and “liable to make many more stupid mistakes” is the prblem.
Even though i would like to see flo benched, theres a risk there that after flo is benched, Romo is left running around like a chicken with his head cut off and our season goes down the tubes.

is that the play I should expect to see from professionals today
thisso who’s at fault for a team that burned two timeouts in the first quarter today and then has to burn another to get the punt team on……or can we criticize that
so the backups are awful, tell me, who’s fault is that.. coaches, or maybe the GM, guess you can’t criticize that either
As far as wade goes, he’s lost this team, there is no fire, just the same lame press conferences week in and week out for all the talk about how he’s going to change. The only change in this teams play is that, instead of waiting until December to play horrible, they decided to get it started earlier.

I was mentioning the exact same thing friday to friends of mine that the cowboys haven’t been the same team since the first half of that Greenbay game on thursday night football on NFLN and it’s just not one position player or coach, it’s a systemic problem with this organization from top to bottom. There is nothing more fustrating watching this team week in and week out. This will be known as the lost or wasted season by the end. You can’t just turn on a switch and everything changes..
People that throw out the HATER term usually can’t defend their position or player, so they just resort to personal attacks on others.

Totally agree sduncan24
There has been an unequal amount of pessimism relative to the team’s performance. If Dallas was 1-4 or worse, I would totally understand it, or if we’d been eliminated from playoff contention, I’d agree with most of it. But ever since the 1st loss of the season it seems a bit overtly negative around here. I’ve even read supportive comments from a Giants blogger, and a Eagles blogger in the last week, both saying (paraphrasing) “keep your chin up” and “the season is just getting started”. I’ve never seen that before. That certainly indicates even our foes think some guys are going a bit over the top with the doom and gloom predictions.
Legitimate criticism is fine, but I think it’s a shame when it becomes too depressing to read the comments because guys are slamming good players and predicting 8-8 or 7-9. This is a site for fans after all.

You know things are bad when the opposing teams’ fans in our division are compelled to post such things. I guarantee you they hate our guts and would normally be reveling in every demise the Cowboys suffer. They probably log on over here to gloat, and instead after reading the posts decide to make “keep your chin up” posts. Excellent posts sduncan24, APerfectStar. I have been similarly aware and posted the same thing over the last 2 weeks.

A lot of the negativity
has been justified by poor play. Most posters know that it would be suicide to fire Wade at this point in the season, but how to you correct the seemingly constant errors and penalties that hold this team back from winning against better teams. Players play the game, but coaches supposedly prepare them. This team cannot afford to continue playing these sloppy games if they intend to be successful. I believe the offence will come together when Felix and RW return. I hope the defence will hold until Sensi returns. I don’t see a lot of “haters” as much a lot of real Cowboy fans just venting frustration.

I heard Pat Kerwin on Sirius radio today saying....
…that the Pats draft and trade for players based on their “mental” aspect of the game and not only their talent or skills. Thus, most of those players are disciplined before they ever get to New England. Kudos to their HC for bringing in those kind of guys, but he did not “create” them.

don't think it would be all of the sudden
but this is a good team, with a ton of talent. If the right person, made the right moves, Dallas would become a much better team. How else do you explain teams making such dramatic turnarounds after a coaching change? Good and Bad.

We all need to vent on these boards
but the fire Wade and Garrett stuff, wishing Jones would pass away or step down as GM, calling up McGee…all that stuff is really unrealistic. Even if we lost today, it is highly doubtful a coaching change would be made. The defense is as dependent on Wade as the offense is on Garrett.
Other than correcting the bonehead stuff, just a few tweaks could really improve this team. A play-making nickel LB would be nice—or at least a guy that can help limit 3rd-down yardage. Jason Williams? Keep Brooking in? Send Carp to see if Merriman has any leftover roids? Octavien? Buehler? Seriously, though…the poor play here can really hurt us down the stretch.
Now that Miles has helped establish some speed on the outside, somebody must become Romo’s possession guy at WR. Try Ogletree if Hurd is not gonna contribute. Work on getting Bennett being that guy. We have to extend drives.
Penalties? Okay, those offsides ones were becuz the defense was really amped. Let’s pretend they get a pass. But the offense is the one that is struggling, and like Raf said, we can’t run the ball when we’re backed up with a 1st and 15 or 2nd and 20 and expect to win games. I understand that Free is not experienced, but is it too much to ask to bring him in here and there? Perhaps it is, but it could give time for Flo to chill out a bit. He’s really not playing with his head.

I agree, it's unrealistic.
But isn’t a blog like this the outlet for fans to express both their enthusiasm and their frustration? Sometimes a post has to be recognized as someone just blowing off steam. Obviously everyone knows that Romo is not getting benched this year, but does that mean that people aren’t allowed to say that they think he should be? Or that they think the team would be better off without Jerry or Wade?
Personally, I think some of the critical posts are just biting more lately because they are becoming harder and harder to discount.
by Baked Potato Soup on Oct 11, 2009 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Personally, everyone should be able to post what they want.
I agree with you about venting frustration and posting to blow off steam. Lately though, it’s been the black hole vortex of “this team sucks”, starting with the owner and moving down the line all the way to just short of the waterboy. As someone who enjoys this blog and the NFL, personally I don’t really want to read all that in the second week of a sixteen game season. A lot of it just ridiculous at this point.
I was always of the belief that you supported your team through thick and thin. Right now it is thin but it has the power to get better. The vaunted Giants beat us with a last second field goal, the Broncos who everyone assumed would end up third in their division, just finished beating the Pats, all the while wearing the most horrific uniforms God ever visited on a team. I guess my view is, we came pretty damn close to beating 2 teams the angels are singing about right now, so we can’t be as bad as the BTB posts have been since the season started.

I agree with you sduncan
I try to be realistic when it comes to this team – i know we are not playing very well offensively right now, and I’ve honestly adjusted my expectations for this team. As a couple people have said, we actually have been playing .500 ball for a while now. I want to see improvement on that – I want to see the rookies step in and give our starters some rest on defense. I want to see ROmo build a better rapport with these wrs. I want to see the coaches trust a guy like tashard choice more. At this point I want to see changes along the ol.
But that doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy watching this team, and thats what annoys me when reading many peoples post – many of our posters practically refuse to post anything positive when it comes to this team. There were so many “why are people happy, its only the chiefs”….posts….
The team is struggling right now, and they should rightfully be criticized from the owner on down. Our qb who is generally VERY good is playing pretty average ball, good one game and bad the next. but I’m kinda amazed at the number of our own fans who have written us off or who just refuse to even cheer for this team it seems.

I agree 100%. The problem is
people dont call it what it is. people get emotional, and assign blame where its not warranted. Instead of grasping the reality that there is an extremely thin line between 5-0, 3-2 and 1-4— that there are multiple factors in a teams success or failure, they hang onto one theme and exploit it even when it’s not the cause.
romo had maybe 4, at the most, bad plays this game. Yet, the Romo haters refuse to acknowledge he had a great game, that wouldve been magnificent if not for the early drops.
blaming only wade phillips for the penalties, when we have been a penalty plagued team for 7 years now.
the truth is, most people cannot fathom the thought that there are multiple factors that play into any given result. And because of this, they say irrational things to try and provide a simple explanation.
Coach Winters: Alright, this is Mississippi State's offensive set. Second and two on our own 24, what defensive set might we call?
Alvin Mack: Eagle Zipper Hero, unless the setback shifts into the I.
Coach Winters: Good..[clicks to next slide], third and seven?
Alvin Mack: Oakie Thunder Lion.
Coach Winters: What's your assignment?
Alvin Mack: Kill the quarterback.
Coach Winters: [clicks to next slide]
Alvin Mack: Hit the tight end so hard his girlfriend dies.
Coach Winters: [clicks to next slide]
Alvin Mack: Kill everybody.

putting it together
there’s no right or wrong way for fans emotionally invested in the team to react, but personally I do get tired (or just skip) reading the negative over-the-top knee-jerk reactions, and appreciate the posts that help put things in perspective.
what I see is that all aspects of the team have worked very well this season, but not all at the same time! And not all for a whole game. That’s what Romo alluded to in his post game interview, about “putting it all together” and how good they can be when they do. Even today, most of the team actually played quite well despite the adversity, and the problems were just in a few areas. Like Crayton and Flo, whose fumble and drive ending penalties nearly cost us the game. But ST was very good other than Crayton’s fumble, defense was very good other than the last drive (and the offsides), and the offense was very good overall, especially Austin of course and Choice on limited touches—we now have the #1 offense yardage-wise in the NFL with 420.4 yards per game.
our passing game was great vs Bucs and Chiefs, our running game was great against Giants and Panthers, our run D has been pretty good against everyone except the Bucs, and our pass D has been pretty good since the Giants, at least for 55 minutes of each game! Our special teams has been consistent throughout, and that really is a big factor, something we appreciate but which is underrated by outside/casual observers; having ST units playing consistently well all around can win you a game or two at least. And even with the penalties, in the first couple games we were among the least penalized teams. So we know that all phases can work relatively mistake-free. Now if they can getting them all working at the same time most of the time, they can still be a very good team this season. After a win, however close or ugly, it’s a lot easier to have some confidence that they might pull it all together and yet become what we all hoped they could be.
by scottmaui on Oct 12, 2009 1:20 AM CDT reply actions 1 recs
my worry
is that we never see this offense run on all cylinders due to the olines ability to blow at least one play out of every 6 or 7 with a penalty or missed assignment. Those first two games are such an obvious outlier when it comes to this team and penalties, i have a hard time putting stock in it.
Great special teams play has made up for more than a few of the offensive mistakes these last few weeks. I kinda doubt we’re 3-2 without how consistent they’ve been, although we did see some mishaps today.
We’ve somehow managed to stay pretty healthy, which is also important. I doubt we could sustain the injuries that the giants have for example. I would say the same about philly, but andrews on IR and the other andrews benched wasn’t exactly unexpected, kinda like McNabb and Westbrook going down during the year. It sounds dumb, but you’ve gotta expect those things, kinda like flo going down for some length of time with us along with RW and felix.
