Could the Kansas City win have saved our season?

Think back to 2008 (I know it's hard) and think about the seven games we lost. Ones that pop out instantly are St. Louis, Arizona, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. If the Cowboys had won just one of those games, they would have gone to the playoffs. The kicker of those losses, is of course St. Louis, who won a meager two games last season.

If the Cowboys had beaten St. Louis, most likely they would have been playoff-bound.

With that in mind, could Kansas City this year have been that crucial game? That game that prevents a win-or-go-home week seventeen? It's interesting to think about if you get my meaning.

Star-divide

Of  course, it could also not be the season-saving game I'm thinking about. What if we lost to Kansas City and went on to beat Atlanta? What if, after today, we lose to Atlanta in two weeks?

With a little consistency, I think this win over Kansas City can, in an odd sort of way, be our ticket to the playoffs. If the Cowboys can put up a legitimate win streak of a few weeks, particularly in December, then I think we'll be just fine for the post-season.

P.S: I'm sorry if this is kind of hard to understand or sloppy to read. It was much easier thinking about this than writing it for some reason.

I dont know about season saving victory when it comes to december.

but i think if we lost that game, things could’ve really gone into a tailspin that could affect us the rest of the year

I agree

This game was a must win for the team and the players knew it. It will be looked upon as big as any regular season game this season before it’s all said and done.

The players were under a lot of pressure to win this game and they came through despite trying to lose it through mistakes and penalties.

I expect them to come out of the bye week and play well against Atlanta, Seattle, Philly and GB. They probably won’t win all 4, but I expect improved play.

It was a season saver...

In the sense that it allowed this team to avoid a total malaise of mediocrity. Basically a loss today would have been devastating…just think if that field goal isn’t blocked where would we be right now?

It was a win that a team needed if they think they can right the ship over the bye week. It keeps the collective heads above water. We won’t know if they’ll be swimming towards success off of this for a few weeks…

Wade Phillips has never won a playoff game as a head coach..he has lost 4 home playoff games.
His longest tenure as head coach was 3 years.
Only once did his record as a HC improve from one year to the next (by 1 game)

Either way...

way can all agree that it was a heck of a play, and underscores how important Ratliff is to this defense. Our defensive MVP so far this year goes to either Ratliff or Brookings…no doubt.

It's true..the what if game springs a lot of debate..but...

I was simply pointing out the plays that were made that really helped this team eek out a win…3 extra points is something we’ve all seen the cowboys struggle with before…

It might not have been a spring-board to great things

but it surely saved us from all gloom and doom

Only time will tell if this win saved the season...

but a loss may very well have killed it.

Agreed

The Good

Both losses are to 5-0 teams (the Broncos loss suddenly becomes a little easier to swallow with their defeat of the Patriots).

The bad: all three wins are against teams with one win combined.

Look, unless Dallas reaches the conference title game, Wade is a goner anyway. Why not can him now and see if Garrett is a good head coach? If not, they can hire a new coach in the offseason. But there is really no reason for Wade to hang around.

Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)

cause you risk losing a defense playing very well

Smart teams wait till the offseason to make coaching changes. You pretty much sacrifice the season. And do you really think the coaches we’ve talked about (holmgren/shanahan/gruden/cowher) would want to do that? come in and take over Wade’s team and have no immediate influence over personell dcisions?

If we can just somehow make it to the playoffs, ANYTHING is possible in this conference. And frankly, this team needs to see as many playoff games as possible to try to get over that hump.

You've got to be joking, right?

And what specifically have you seen from Garrett that makes you feel he is head coach material?

I’m glad your Mall of America Stadium is finally completed and starting to generate income. Gas prices on the east coast are falling.

I heard a construction worker buried a Steeler’s jersey under the concrete beneath the star! There’s pictures on YouTube of him laying it in there and then putting dirt on it.

Nice win today. Ya gotta get healthy so you can take out Manning. The Skins are a mess and the Eagles will find something to upset McNabit with. I just can’t bare to see Elijah lisping in the national media or having to watch his childhood front yard football games during playoff halftimes. In the one film with Peyton running around in the yard, you can see toothless Uncle Jebadyah Manning peeking from behind a tree. Pretty messed up but it got through editing.

Well, I’ll leave you to your giant silver space beatle and better out of the pocket QB.

You got a link to the youtube video of the steeler's jersey being buried beneath the star?

Sounds like a bull$h!t take on the Red Sox jersey being buried beneath the new Yankee Stadium

If that Steeler fan buried a jersey

That jinx is gonna come back on him. That thinking only works on teams of the same division. Cowboys are in an entirely different conference.

That Jinx won’t work. He’s a Steeler fan burying a jersey in the wrong place. Try some of the AFC teams with that kind of jinx. That jinx is already coming back on them. They won’t whiff another super bowl for awhile now.

can’t find the link. some guy at work brought it up. 2 greasy dirt ball steeler worker giggling over an old wrinkled up Ward jersey. they put a few shovels of dirt on it and poured a bottle water on it. the entire stadium area was just dirt and only the frame of the building was up. i guess they knew where the 50 yard line was?? anyway, i’ll try to find it and link it.

This is an easy post to respond to.

No!

If we win against some good teams later it won’t be because we squeaked out an ugly OT victory against a horrible team, that’s for sure.

by Realist Larry on Oct 12, 2009 12:03 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

that may be true

but if we had lost to this team, i wouldn’t have been shocked if the wheels came off and we saw a 6-10 season. SO it kinda makes a difference.

If they lost to the Chiefs,

Wade and Garret would have had to hitch hike back to Texas.

...which might have been a better outcome

Instead fans in DC, New York and Philly rejoiced at the notion of still being able to face a Dallas team coached by Winnie.

So the simple answer is "no"

In fact, knowing this team’s psyche the way I do, Wade and staff will focus on the upside and how the team fought and refused to give up. In the end, I expect that to come back and haunt them.

Landry or Jimmy would have fumed over how a game against a team as hapless as the Chiefs was ever in doubt against Dallas. Those two would have chewed major a$$ on the flight home and would have made every single player feel like they had no business collecting a paycheck after such a debacle. They would have fumed over the mental lapses and made both the coaches and players feel that pain over the course of the next two weeks.

In the end, in any organization, it is all about what standards of performance which you are willing to accept. Jimmy and Landry had lofty expectations of their teams. Wade, IMO, doesn’t have a clue as to what it takes to lead these men to the top of the mountain.

So, the simple answer is “no”, it didn’t save our season.

But it may save next year’s. ;-)
