First Time Poster's Thoughts
Hello everyone, I am a longtime reader (since TheBoysBlog) but have never posted. I have really enjoyed all the new content since the merger as well as the enthusiasm and (usually) insightful comments from the diehards. Despite never posting, I have spent a lot of time reading the comments so I feel as if I know the personalities of a lot of the posters on here. There are a few thoughts I’d like to share.
First of all, who else but #9. The biggest thing that worries me about Romo is his demeanor. Right before the last drive in the Denver game, he was sitting on the sidelines with his head hung looking sullen. He did it during the Chiefs game too. Tell me that Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Troy Aikman and countless other great QBs wouldn’t have been running up and down the sideline screaming to rally the troops. Now maybe Romo will never be an in-your-face screamer, but he certainly has enough personality to do something there. When I think of Romo 2 years ago, he was happy-go-lucky, joked around, and seemed as if he was having the time of his life. He lit it up then. Now he looks as if all he’s thinking about is what the fans and everyone in the media will say if he isn’t perfect. It’s like he’s stopped having fun and thinks every game is do or die. I believe he puts way more pressure on himself than any of us ever could. I don’t know how but he needs to lighten up. I wish JG could just tell him to play his game, and help him do that with a consistent running game and rolling him out of the pocket. Let’s get this guys mind right, have him worry about less pre-snap, and get him to have some fun out there. I think that will help the whole offense. I know this is subjective and speculative analysis, but I think it's a legitimite concern. This guy can still play, he just needs to get out of his own head.
Next, the defense. Obviously, there is a lot to worry about. However as Grizz mentioned, there is a lot to be excited about too. Brooking is turning into the playmaker and emotional leader Bradie James has always wanted to be. Mike Jenkins is starting to play with a swagger. Rat is still giving everyone he goes against fits, and Ware finally got the sack monkey off his back. I think there were too many new players and the NFL is too hard for the Cowboys to have started the season dominate. But if these guys can learn to play smart football together, and not collapse at the end, I think we have a very good defense.
There has been a lot of conflict on the blog lately about what kind of team we have and what attitude a fan should have. I personally think Wade and JG are awful, but I’ll give them this season before I call for their heads. We’ve only played 5 games, there’s a lot of time for this team to put it all together and play to their potential.
In 2005 the Pittsburgh Steelers got off to a 7-5 start that included a 3 game losing streak. They were able to turn it around and get hot at the right time. They won the last 4 weeks of the regular season and rode that streak to a Superbowl victory. We’ve seen the Cowboys start hot and fade towards the end. The optimist in me thinks this year will be the opposite. I hope so bad that this team can learn from all its early struggles and put together a streak so that for once we’ll actually be the hot team when the playoffs start.

Very well done.
I think you echo the thoughts of many fans and posters on this site. Good honest thoughts. Most of us still hold on to the hope that Romo will return to that guy having fun and playing well. He had a better game yesterday, but he didn’t seem to be enjoying himself. This team can do things if they can stay out of their own way. Good post.

I disagree
He looked like he was having a blast out there when Austin scored those TDs. It makes sense he’s going to act happy when the team plays well and look sullen when things aren’t going well, thats just human nature.
In Romo we Trust

Whether Romo is "having fun" or not
his 113.7 rating yesterday, and
his 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions, and
getting a W at the end of the day is really all that matters.
He probably had “fun” in some of our losses last year.
I don’t care if he has fun or not, I just want him to play up to his potential.
Yes – the 2005 Steelers turned it around and I hope we can do the same.

He certainly looked happy on the TDs to Austin,
although not as happy as Miles himself. But my point remains that most of the time out there he looks incredibely uptight. The little things like joking with the ref and just being able to enjoy being out there seem to be gone. And I think that it is that mindset that will help him play up to his potential. While there is no concrete argument to be made between the relationship of his mood and his success, he seems to play better when he isn’t looking suicidal. Obviously the more they win the happier he’ll look, but right now he just looks like a different player than he used to.

Romo's ' kid having fun' demeanor is very refreshing
And I’ve said all along I admire the fact he doesn’t ‘manage’ his personallity to appeal to media and fans. He seems genuine and grounded in that way.
There’s a golf analogy here – appropriate for TR’s skill/passion in that game as well.
There are 2 types of players in golf: Technicians and Feel players. The technician – Nick Faldo, Vijay Singh and Tiger works on the fundamentals, hones them to a razor sharp point and uses that muscle memory to execute what the shot calls for. Troy struck me as a Technician when playing, you can hear it in his TV commentary as well. Roger and Dandy Don were Feel players.
That doesn’t mean Romo doesn’t work on fundamentals as well, but the game comes to him differently, which explains to some extent the swings between exceptional play – good and bad. As a golfer, I am a Feel player and when you ‘lose it’ out on the course, it can be bewildering.
As with his golf game, I think Romo is a superior football talent. I don’t want the attempts to instill more ‘Technical’ behavior diminish his feel for the game, because this is largely what separates him form the Average.

I agree
The golf analogy works well here. To take it further, it is fine when you are on the range to think about specific parts of your swing, but once you start thinking about it when you’re out on the course, it inevitably goes downhill. There is just too much to focus on and think about that trying to focus on one thing when playing messes me up. When you’re playing a round, you just have to play.
When Romo goes out and is so worried about turning it over and all the other things that could happen, I feel like it inhibits his ability to evade the rush, make a big play, and even just throw an accurate crossing route. The feel is lost.

Best golf saying I ever heard:
The next shot is about…the next shot
every bit as applicable to Football, Quarterbacking.
