Start Miles Austin NOW

This is not about what an amazing WR Austin is. The guy is still obviously a work in progress. The bottom line is that Patrick Crayton continues to be a mediocre WR with limited speed, and it is just not working when we start two possession receivers. The defense is not respecting the wideouts, and this is putting pressure on the entire offense.

My initial observation watching the TO-less Cowboys offense the first few weeks was that we seemed to still have a good offense capable of moving the ball and putting up points. But it seemed like in the past, there was no 3rd and long that was too difficult for the Cowboys to pick up. With TO stretching the field and Witten roaming over the middle, Dallas routinely converted 3rd and 11s, 3rd and 15s sometimes. Now, the defense crowds the box, and nobody threatens to burn the defense.

Enter Miles Austin. They HAVE to make him the starter. He is the only WR on the roster that can stretch the field. Most great receiving duos have a possession guy and a deep threat. Williams and Crayton just do not put fear in defenses when they are out there in tandem. This just seems like a no-brainer at this point to me. Unfortunately, I'm wondering if the coaching staff is going to continue to operate with no brains.

Me neither.

It is like watching a comedy of errors. If there is some way to do something stupid it looks like that is exactly what the Cowboys will do. I think before the game they all take a spin with the russian roulette pistol loaded with 3 stupid bullets.

In the press conference today

Wade said they had to play him. As to whether he’s a starter, Wade said they would play him as much as he played today. My feeling is that Wade didn’t want to announce a depth chart change during a press conference, and the Austin would probably take Crayton’s place.

WRs

Miles Austin 1
Roy Williams 2
Patrick Crayton 3
Sam Hurd 4

Crayton does work better in the slot

and with Williams and Austin as 1&2 – I think that is the best scenario right now.

by BishopWest on Oct 12, 2009 10:23 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed...

1 – Roy Williams
2 – Miles Austin
3 – Patrick Crayton
4 – Sam Hurd
5 – Kevin Ogletree

The one thing I would say that is if Sam Hurd can’t learn to catch a ball that is fired on a rope, Ogletree might deserve some of the chances Hurd is currently getting. Granted the ball he missed was not a particularly easy catch (due to its velocity), but it is one that has to be made in that situation since Romo put it away from the defender and easily within Sam’s reach in the endzone.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Well, Tony might have to slather super glue on the ball before each throw

but Stone Cold Steve…er, Stone Hands Miles Austin does have some serious ability to YACk it up. I could see Austin at the 2 spot, Roy at 1, and PC back in the slot at 3 where he seemed to do his best work.

But seriously, you thought TO had a lot of drops?

by mdlusk on Oct 12, 2009 11:38 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He caught 10 and dropped like 2

forgive me if I could care less about his drops

by quincyyyyy on Oct 12, 2009 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

woah-

care less? he dropped two sure touchdowns that wouldve salted this game away waaaaaaay earlier.

he had a spectacular game after that, but the two drops were huge and couldve been a huge impact

Coach Winters: Alright, this is Mississippi State's offensive set. Second and two on our own 24, what defensive set might we call?
Alvin Mack: Eagle Zipper Hero, unless the setback shifts into the I.
Coach Winters: Good..[clicks to next slide], third and seven?
Alvin Mack: Oakie Thunder Lion.
Coach Winters: What's your assignment?
Alvin Mack: Kill the quarterback.
Coach Winters: [clicks to next slide]
Alvin Mack: Hit the tight end so hard his girlfriend dies.
Coach Winters: [clicks to next slide]
Alvin Mack: Kill everybody.

neither of them were easy catches though

if he’d caught either one we’d consider they nice catches, so while a great WR will often make those catches, even a good WR will sometimes not haul them in (e.g. R. Wayne dropped a much easier pass in the end zone in the Sunday night game). Meanwhile Miles did make a couple really nice catches yesterday. Not making excuses for him, but just sayin….

If he has 10 catches 250 yards and 2 tds he can drop as many passes as he wants

anyhow he was targeted 15 times and caught it 10. That is a 66% success rate. That is pretty good because you also ignore he catches things that he has no business catching, like that sure interception.

With this idiotic coaching staff,

I doubt they would make Austin a starter.

idiotic?

We have the #1 rated offense in the league today

3 years of errors vs 1 good game...

That is exactly what you have in Austin. Starting him would speed up his learning but in the end expect him to hurt your offense with bad routes (case and point the Denver game.) You mention 3rd and longs and that his big play ability would make defenses respect us. What do you think he has been doing for 3 years? He has been on the field when it’s 3rd and long as the 3rd wideout but defenses haven’t been scared of him any this year (until the Chiefs game.)

Do we need speed? YES! Does Austion provide speed? YES! Is Austin going to be the cure for our passing game woes? NO! Truth is, we don’t have a True #1, #2, or #3 WR. We have a collage of WRs that need to step up as A GROUP in order for defenses to respect the pass.

not his first big game

and “3 years of errors” isn’t a very fair evaluation lol…

last year vs. GB he had 2 for 115 and a TD, and very close to 2 TDs. Then was held down the rest of the season by injuries. While that wasn’t the huge game this one was, and he only had 2 catches, it was still a big day and showed that he could be a deep threat. The 2nd catch especially showed great body control to slow down a bit, hold off the CB, and then move forward into the catch uncontested.

I disagree here

Last year, Austin caught nearly every ball that came his way, and a couple that most would have deemed un catchable. Regarding he two touchdown passes he did not catch yesterday, the second one went right thru his hands…should have caught that one. But the first one was off of his fingertips…can’t rope that one in because there was not enough hand under it to divert it’s direction back into him. He was stretched out as far as he could be.

In the last two years, Austin has made great strides with his hands and has one of the more reliable set of hands on the team, and he fights for the ball. WHen was the last time you saw a DC receive FIGHT for the ball like Austin does. Remember the under thrown pass be Romo down the sideline. He basically took the ball out of the defenders hand. Haven’t see determination like that our of our receivers in a long time.

Start him now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This year, we bring the house!!!!!!!!!!!
