The VRR: Cowboys Can Build on Winning Record During Bye Week

By no means, was yesterday's win at Arrowhead Stadium perfect. If you would have told me on Saturday that Miles Austin would catch 10 balls for 250 yards and two touchdowns, I would have had visions of 40-burgers bouncing in my head. Instead, the Cowboys were forced into overtime by the winless, rebuilding Kansas City Chiefs.

October 25th and the Falcons will be here before we know it, which means the Cowboys can't be whistling dixie too long. Instead, maybe the old Johnny Mercer tune would be more appropriate: "You've got to accentuate the positive...Eliminate the negative."

A win is a win is a win. But, the Cowboys have plenty to improve upon.

The win came after a myriad of Cowboys errors, including 13 penalties for 90 yards, a missed field goal attempt, a dropped punt by Patrick Crayton, numerous dropped passes and several poor throws from Romo.

Whether Miles Austin's big day propels him to starter status or not, Wade Phillips says his role in the offense will be increased.

"He did the things we thought he could," Phillips said. "You're not going to make 250 yards every time, but he's going to have a chance to make big plays again."

If Austin is a starter, it would likely be at Patrick Crayton's spot even though Austin replaced Roy Williams Sunday. With a $45 million contract, it would be difficult to sit Williams for sure.

More VRR after the jump.

Star-divide

Tim MacMahon says that maybe Austin "ought to stay in the starting lineup".

He made key plays on every Cowboys scoring drive. He had catches of 18 and 37 yards on the drive that got rid of the goose egg on the scoreboard before halftime. His most acrobatic catch probably came on a throw behind him in the middle of the field, a 9-yard gain on third down that extended Dallas' first touchdown drive.

He made another leaping grab, this one on the sideline for a 34-yard gain, to set up a field goal early in the fourth quarter. And the 6-foot-3, 214-pound Austin twice turned short passes into long touchdowns (59 and 60 yards) by breaking tackles and bolting through the secondary with the game on the line.

"He proved that we can count on him in the clutch," said quarterback Tony Romo, who threw for 351 yards despite the fact No. 1 receiver Roy Williams stayed in Dallas to nurse his injured ribs. "We can count on him when it counts."

Overall, it looked to me as if Tony Romo's accuracy returned. Though, QB#9 seems more enamored with the team's resiliency.

"The guys just really, they battled so hard this week and went through a lot of junk with a lot of different things," Romo said. "To come out here and to get down the way we did, it would have been very easy to have said 'OK, hang it up,’ or just tone it down or whatever. And we didn’t do that. That speaks a lot about a football team and about this team. I think there’s a lot of resiliency out here and there’s a lot of competitive individuals and games like these. ... There are going to be a few of them this year, but if we can continue to do this, I like our chances the rest of the way."

Jason Witten was screamin' and yellin' yesterday. You go, team captain!

Beginning with the very first drive Jason Witten showed how fired up he was for the game. He exchanged heated words with Chiefs coach Todd Haley following an early penalty, and later barked at Romo when the Cowboys had to burn a timeout. Even Mat McBriar got some of it, Witten letting him know the ball needed to be snapped sooner when the Cowboys had to call a timeout as the play clock ran down before their field goal try.

The consistent play of Tashard Choice will also give the coaching staff something to think about during the bye week.

The Chiefs were also burned for two long runs by another similarly unheralded player, Dallas running back Tashard Choice. He scored on a 36-yard run and also ran for 24 yards, setting up the winning touchdown.

"We were going for the ball, trying to strip the ball out of his hands," Chiefs safety Jarrad Page said. "When you do that, you don’t completely focus on the tackle and getting the guy down. That’s when things like that happen."

Sure, the defense has given up scores late in the team's two losses, but the unit came up huge in overtime.

"I think it was a must-win, especially going into the bye week," said linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who recorded his first two sacks of the season. "It’s a feeling of relief because you see the identity of your team and I’m talking about the defense today. Some of the past games, we’ve lost in the end and it’s been on us. Now, we got the offense back the ball and they scored."

Patrick Crayton and Nick Folk may not be happy with their special teams performances, but NT Jay Ratliff helped that unit out big time with his fourth-quarter field goal block.

Despite his 6-4, 303-pound frame, Ratliff hurdled Chiefs deep snapper Thomas Sam Gafford to get in position for the block.

"I never tried it before," Ratliff said, deflecting credit to his teammates and special teams coach Joe DeCamillis. "It was just watching film and listening to what coach Joe D said and then executing the plan."

If you want to watch the victory again and again, here are NFL GameDay's video highlights.

LET ME USE THIS THREAD TO STATE MY CONFIDENCE

this team is turning the corner, and not just because of the come from behind victory.

the intergration of the draft picks will soon be complete, and we will have a little more depth to work with.

the other injuries are soon to be fixed. felix jones and marion barber at full speed to go along with the superb tashard choice (screw the cheerleader, run the rookie sophmore, save the world)

roy williams is a great compliment (notice how phrased) to go with new star austin and steady j witten.

demarcus ware has broken his sack drought, not coincidentally in the first game when anthony spencer warranted extra attention.

save for mcbriar not turning the laces, special teams has consistently been improved.

all very good signs. now, we still need to improve in a lot of areas not healthwise, but I think the weight of the last few weeks and the national scrutiny (yes, bashing the Cowboys is a media sport— dont forget that when they try to suck you in) they will begin to breath easier and get back to improving as the season goes along.

look at how they played yesterday, started off with a horrible display of a team doubting themselves. above and beyond a talent display, a lack of confidence was being displayed. A come from behind gutcheck victory is the remedy for that, it doesn’t matter who the opponent is.

We are turning the corner, get back on the bandwagon.

Hate to be Mr. Negative Nancy

But all this optimism would be for nothing if Austin doesn’t make that amazing play in OT.

I’m still not impressed with Ware. He beat up on a back-up LT.

I LOVE what I read about Witten though… We need our best players speaking up… not Crayton or Bradie.

oh yeah?

what if the chiefs go for two and make it? is the “corner turned” then, or then is the season an abject disaster?

This isn’t a story or a movie. You don’t need to provide it with a narrative arc.
Things are what they are.

The Steelers or Giants or Eagles or Colts would’ve beaten the hell out of that Cowboys team on Sunday.

by Joey2zs on Oct 12, 2009 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Those same Giants

couldn’t “beat the hell” out of us when we were -4 turnovers…

The defense didn’t look any worse than they did against the giants, and the offense once it got out of its own way, was fine.

Just because we haven’t yet had that “go for the kill” instinct to blow teams out doesn’t mea we would be an easy out for an elite team.

The Giants and broncos are 5-0 and we had leads on both in the fourth quarter.

Watching other teams around the league, the only thing holding back the Cowboys are correctable mistakes. No turnovers, limit penalties and Dallas is right up there with the top teams.

And before anyone says “it hasn’t happened in (fill in the blank) years”, that doesn’t mean it won’t happen now.

3-2 headed for the bye week.

We would be much better off with Austin starting...

and Crayton moving to the slot/WR3 spot. I’ve been saying for at least 2 years that Crayton is really a WR3 playing WR2 for no good reason other than we didn’t have any other options. Roy Willy isn’t a speed burner, so when he and Crayton are on the field together we have essentially two possession receivers out there. Austin’s speed gives the O a nice counter to Williams size and length, and his big day should mean D-Coordinators are going to focus on him a little more, which should open things up for everyone else.

Getting Austin on the field and Felix back should give us a whole new look on O.

Should.

by DannyWhite on Oct 12, 2009 5:55 PM CDT reply actions

Seconded.

Crayton is a nice #3 and Hurd knows all three positions as a solid backup. When Ogletree is ready, he can take Crayton’s spot for less money or Hurd’s spot if they don’t resign him.

by Terry on Oct 13, 2009 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I seriously doubt it...he is old, slow and brings nothing to the team....

Hurd can do the same thing….we need a young playermaker on offense and in the offseason either by the draft or FA it will happen….Crayton’s contract is dirt cheap so it won’t be a factor in getting rid of him…The signing of Rossem is writing on the wall for Crayton..they know he isn’t cutting it as a PR and barely cutting it as a WR for this team….There really is no reason to keep him around after the season. The only thing he brings is a big mouth every week..

by Boyzfan94 on Oct 13, 2009 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

I’ve always thought they needed Austin’s speed to spread the field and put Crayton where he belongs at the slot. Love Austin, but I’d like to see more consistency from him. He dropped a perfect Romo short TD pass and had another one that he tipped where it would have been a tough but certainly makeable TD catch.

Anyone know why Marty B was barely on the field or got no looks?

by selke99 on Oct 12, 2009 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions

This team needs to rethink the skill position depth chart

An obviously not 100% barber and Roy, whose done very little, cannot be guarenteed to be full time players.

I’m not saying Choice should be the starter or Austin should be the number 1, but for 2 years now we’ve seen the team play an injured barber significant carries while they have a legitimate backup in choice. Likewise, what have Roy or Crayton done to warrant their spots on the depth chart?

by foyesboys on Oct 12, 2009 5:59 PM CDT reply actions

Miles Austin had a good game.

But nobody wants to talk about the 2 TDs he dropped.

We came out flat, had stupid turnovers, had way too many penalties.(maybe they should actually try to fix that last one)

Quit pumping sunshine up everyone’s butt. It took overtime to beat a horrible horrible team. We were a 9-7 team last year that folded in December and didn’t make the playoffs. What massive changes were made in the offseason to change that? New coaching staff? nope. New impact players acquired through the draft or free agency? nope.

Saying a win is a win is just enabling poor football. Need proof? Just ask Wade Phillips.

Sorry

I didn’t see that you had discussed the drops at length yesterday. Its hard to shift through the 1000 comments on the game day post. It really wasn’t my intent to bash him, he had a great game. But it was against one of the worst teams in the league and he dropped two TDs, so he deserves sunshine, just not as much as he is getting.

I spent the majority of my post criticizing just about everyone else. We will be a top 5 team in penalties this year and while im too lazy to look up the stats, we have probably been top 5-10 in that area for years.

I also criticized jerry for not doing anything in the offseason. I am just as big of a fan of the cowboys as anyone else on here, but I am a realist at heart. We didn’t get anyone in free agency, we had a “special teams” draft and we kept the same coaching staff(except Bruce Read) so why does anyone expect this team to be any better than they were last year.

I drank koolaid the “romo friendly” offense and the two te sets. But just watch the games, we are one of the worst coached teams in the NFL, so a win is a win is a win……until it actually matters in december.

Nooo, last week I was thinking he was no more than a #4 WR and ended up eating major crow this week.

Just goes to show that any young player can turn it on quickly. Whether he will be groomed into a savvy vet is dependent on many factors. Obviously, some of the the savvy vets on this team are not to be counted on week in and week out.

That doesn’t mean I’m trying to pump “sunshine up everybody’s butt”…just staying objective.

Sitting out one play in training camp scrimmages didn’t really curtail our drive killing penalties. The coaches need to yank someone out during the game, and I don’t care if it’s Flozell Adams or Jason Witten. The next false start gets you on the sideline ‘splainin to Wade what . . . wait a minute, what am I saying. It’ll never happen, any more than Jerry turning over the GM duties to Stephen.

The win was good.

I try to speak well of my team. I try to reason with all the negativity that surrounds, I guess, any Cowboys loss. But I was deleted the other day for defending myself after some negative comments were made about my positive message. I didn’t use profanity, didn’t call the other person anything beyond negative. For the most part I tried to debate their negative points with a positive outlook, and yet, I was deleted, and the person who attacked my comments was not.

Yeah, okay. I went after someone who came after me. For that matter, another well-known negative poster joined in. I even ignored the second person, and tried to stay on point with the person who started the whole thing. Was I put in the dog house because I defended my team too well? I mean, it’s not making a lot of sense to me, even several days later. So I ask, just what are the rules around here, and why would my positive comments about the Cowboys be deleted in favor of someone’s attack on them?

That was a close game.

It was a road win and those are always good. There are lots of positive things to build on, but work to do to achieve consistancy on both sides of the ball. The bye week should help improve areas of weakness and get the team healthier for the rest of the season. It’s good to see Witten showing leadership off the field as well as on.

by oldboysfan on Oct 12, 2009 6:21 PM CDT reply actions

living in the Niners and Raiders country the last two weeks reminded me of two analogies:

1) remember the year Niners got their last championship, they were 2-1 and 2-2 at the second loss, Young was running for his life all day. Everybody was saying that looking at Young lying motionless on the field that was the turning point for the season. I know we are not as good or loaded as the 95 Niners, but maybe, maybe that last game becomes the turning point of our season for good.
2) When TO was just Terell Owens a complimentary WR to JRice, there was a game against GB and all game he was dropping balls left and right and kept telling Young don’t shun me out, don’t shun me out and he cought the winning TD with few seconds left in the game. Miles Austin might have had that game against KC, if he keeps on pace, we will be paying a lot of dough for his services next season. Anyway that was my two cents on the optimism in this tread, I don’t even wanna start thinking about the bad side of it.

Crazy statline...

Terrell Owens Dallas Cowboys 2008 through 5 games- 331 yards 5 TDS Recptions 19 catches Avg. 17.42 per catch

Austin Miles 2009 through 5 games- 331 Yards 3 TDS Receptions 15 catches Avg. 22.07 per catch

Not saying anything silly like Austin Miles is the next TO, but it is sorta crazy that they have the same yardage total.

Look at this stat line:

Miles Austin 15 receptions, 331 yards, 3 touchdowns
Patrick Crayton 15 receptions, 243 yards, 1 touchdown
Roy Williams 11 receptions, 214 yards, 1 touchdown
Sam Hurd 5 receptions, 79 yards, 0 touchdowns

And of course, Romo’s roommate and buddy:

Jason Witten 28 receptions, 259 yards, 1 touchdown

How is Terrell Owens doing this season?

Terrell Owens 12 receptions, 202 yards, 1 touchdown

Patrick and Miles have more catches than Terrell, while Roy has one fewer reception, despite missing one game due to injury. Of the wide receivers, only Sam Hurd has fewer yards receiving than Terrell Owens this season. Hurd is a core special teams player: is Owens?

So Owens may need Romo more than Romo needs Owens…

Goat Horns

Miles kept Flozell the hotel from wearing the goat horns…..the big stationary object should buy him a Rolex. My 91 year old mother could block better than him….at least she wouldn’t draw false starts and holding penalties that kill drives. Don’t we have SOMEBODY that can replace Flo?

Once again, JJ the GM strikes. It will be hard to sit RW because he gave up the farm to trade for him and pays him 45 mill……he is at best a number 2 WR.

Why did Wade not declare Miles the starter at his press conference?

It seems to me that Cowboys fans have been complaining about the discipline on this team for quite some time. Several posters, media, and others have mentioned Wade’s role as a facilitator for players making multiple mental mistakes week in and week out. In other words, Phillips does not punish players for not executing their assignments satisfactorily.

Now Miles has one of the best days in Cowboys history, and Wade does not offer up positive reinforcement. Would Wade not have motivated the other players that do not start by making Austin the starter? Would Wade have not sent a message to the underachieving veterans (Ken Hamlin, for instance) by recognizing that players which perform on game day will start and get more opportunities to make plays?

I understand that Wade may not have the constitution to punish a player (or maybe Jerry prohibits that course of negative reinforcement), but here is a wonderful opportunity to modify behavior through positive reinforcement. What is really alarming is that several players have alluded to a pseudo class system, with certain players are “given” starting jobs: Scandrick, Crayton (last season), and Ellis (not the most reliable source).

Nothing against Patrick Crayton, but it is not as if Patrick has been awesome so far this season. Crayton has already thrown the offensive coordinator and quarterback under the bus with his comments regarding running the ball. Why not reward a player that produces on the field with big plays, instead of one that produces headlines with his mouth?

Wade doesn't make those calls...

the OC or maybe Jerry does or both. Wade is lost in the woods when it comes to the offense.

by DIRE WOLF on Oct 13, 2009 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Lost in the woods when

it comes to 2 minute defense too.

Why now? How many right hooks do you have to take to your chin before you start working on keeping

your left up? Offenses work on the 2 minute drill all season long. Why the heck are we just now working on the 2 minute defense?

Sarcasm schmarcasm.

Either way, it needs to be addressed. You blow the lead in the final minutes once it is a shame. You do it twice then it’s a coincidence. Three times is a freaking trend.

Yes he said they would make corrections in the bye week...

Didn’t you hear him with the press yesterday, he said he would work on it. He ask Jerry and Jerry said that would be a nice thing to do.

by DIRE WOLF on Oct 13, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I understand the saracasm, but it is just like this team (coaches)

to not address something until after you get rolled a couple of times.

I couldn't agree more...

his pat answer is we will work on that bla bla bla. I’m sure Wade is a nice guy, but his sht is old. He’s not a headcoach, but does Jerry want a real headcoach? I don’t think so,its not as much fun.

by DIRE WOLF on Oct 13, 2009 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't know about the fun part.

I bet it is pretty fun to bring the Cheerleaders over to admire his Lombardi.

Victor Butler healthy?

After having two sacks in the Carolina game, was there any good reason for Butler not getting more time lately? “I’ll hang up and listen to your comments off the air”

I've been seeing a lot of the D rotate a lot but have not seen Butler

His hot streak may have ended at two. Now people know, he’s really fast

by AustonianAggie on Oct 13, 2009 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Why will Butler not play?

It makes way too much sense to play him.

by DIRE WOLF on Oct 13, 2009 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

We have tightened up the run

I think Spencer has done a good job in the run game, so what you lose in pass rush, you can in run support.

I agree though, not sure how you don’t find a way to get a guy who can rush the passer on the field.

Third and more than 6 yds to go....

He should be on the field. He can make the other team at least have to account for him. But he has to get playing time.

KC's game tying TD

What was Pat Watkins thinking? they had no WR’s on his side, why was he so late getting over? What a waste!

by BK Arsonist on Oct 13, 2009 8:07 AM CDT reply actions

I'll be so glad to see Sensei back onthe field, and Mike Hamlin being active behind him

Hopefully that pushes Pat off the roster, or at worst, he’ll back up Ken Hamlin.

by mdlusk on Oct 13, 2009 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Amen to that, Mike H needs to get back in ASAP.

I thought that also

Jenkins was trailing Bowe, but he had taken away the outside. Looked like the safety should have been sitting back in the middle waiting on that pass. But Watkins was really late or else out of position.

3-2 headed for the bye week.

I heard last night that Oakland is having a fire sale.......

basically anyone except for about 4 or 5 players are negotiable. Is there anyone that we could use like Michael Huff? Just asking.

by texstar on Oct 13, 2009 10:36 AM CDT reply actions

Micheal Huff is playing the best football of his career

Huff is worth a 2nd round pick to me .. heck 2nd and 5th
And that all world Corner Back

I think Al Davis is a blow hard.

Even he aint that dumb to trade away an all pro DB. Well it is Al Davis, nevermind go for it

by DIRE WOLF on Oct 13, 2009 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

well, what I heard.....

Ashamougha (can’t spell his name) Jamarcus Russell, McFadden are safe but others can possibly be had. Hmmmm…….. GET MICHAEL HUFF…..GET MICHAEL HUFF!!!!!! LOL

by texstar on Oct 13, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed...Huff for Newman in a second.....lol

He would probably be better than Hamlin right now…

by Boyzfan94 on Oct 13, 2009 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah replace Hamlin with him....lol

Ken Hamlin is a SS, not a FS..said this for ever…..

by Boyzfan94 on Oct 13, 2009 10:49 AM CDT reply actions

+1

He was also adamant that Ken Hamlin was the most critical FA to re-sign in the 2008 off-season.

3-2 headed for the bye week.

by APerfectStar on Oct 13, 2009 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Hamlin played his best ball as a SS.....

You listen to anyone that knows football and talks about Hamlin they say he is not a FS….Pat Kirwin was on Sirus Radio and said the exact same thing the other day…..Hamlin was at fault for that Bowe TD BTW…..yeah he is real good right..lol

by Boyzfan94 on Oct 13, 2009 7:05 PM CDT reply actions

Newman, Hamlin..... two blunder contracts Jerry gave that we are going to take a bath on....

Give NE credit, they get rid of there older players and get something in return….He should’ve let Newman walk. Maybe someone will see the light and move Newman back in the slot and play Jenkins and Scandrick on the outside next season…Newman is always hurt anyway so playing the slot might extend his career..the guy is not an elite CB..not even close….just an overpaid, little better than average CB….

by Boyzfan94 on Oct 13, 2009 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Right

Because Scandrick is so awesome.

Don’t even compare Hamlin to Newman as far as investments. Newman has been a great CB for Dallas ever since he got here. I’d like to see “little better than average CB’s” consistently shut down the Steve Smith’s and Santana Moss’s of the league. Hamlin looks like he was a one year wonder that suckered Jerry for fat contract.

3-2 headed for the bye week.

by APerfectStar on Oct 13, 2009 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

If Newman played Steve Smith 16 games a year he would be great....lol..

C’mon…Newman is OVERRATED!!..please…he is overpaid for what he does..the player is not a difference maker on the field and rarely makes an impact in a game…For the most part whenever we here about him is when he gets beat which seems more and more these days. The elite CB’s make plays, don’t let easy INT’s slip there hands..Newman has one or two good games a year then disappears….He is not a top 5 CB….please stop drinking the cool-aid on this guy.
