NFL Power Rankings - Week 6 - Final Edition
Here's a look at the various power rankings out there heading into week 6.
Top spot this week goes to the NationalFootballPost.com, who rank us 14th. "Tony Romo might have found a deep threat in Miles Austin on Sunday."
Zac Wassink at AssociatedContent who ranks us 15th, up three. "The worst three-win team in the NFL. Will the Cowboys get back into the top ten of these NFL power rankings again this season?"
ProFootballWeekly rank us 15th. "Maybe T.O. wasn't the problem, after all."
Michael Silver at Yahoo Sports keeps us to 16th. "Did Miles Austin really save Wade Phillips’ job on Sunday, and if so, will the wideout receive better treatment than Gus Frerotte did after doing the same for Brad Childress last season? "
Pete Prisco @ CBS Sports keeps us in 16th place as well. "Was that a season saver against the Chiefs? They did find a much-needed deep threat in Miles Austin and Tony Romo came alive. For a half, it looked like Wade Philips might get it at halftime."
Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk.com also has us ranked unchanged at 16th. "The 3-2 record suggests 'above average'. The performance on the field suggests 'below average'."
SportingNews.com have us at 16th (+1). "Miles Austin came up huge, but their stadium is more impressive than their team. "
WhatIfSports drop us like a hot potato to 17th.
Fox Sports hold us at 17th. "THE BRIGHT SIDE: Dallas has found a way to stay above .500 despite injuries to RBs Marion Barber and Felix Jones affecting the ground game, and the Cowboys lead the NFL in total offense. THE FLIP SIDE: Until Miles Austin arrived against the Chiefs, the 'Boys were playing like dogs in Kansas City last week. Tony Romo has been ordinary in tight spots, and it's scary that DeMarcus Ware (20 sacks in 2008) didn't record his first QB takedown until Week 5."
ESPN also keep us at 17th. "The Cowboys have miles to go to play better football, but at least Miles Austin made Sunday's visit to the Chiefs profitable. (Clayton)" For the worst puns, look no further.
NFL.com drop us one spot to 18th. Bucky Brooks sees us 14th, while Pat Kirwan places us at 22nd.
Weii.com has us at 20th: "The biggest sign of a mediocre team is if that team needs overtime to beat the KC Chiefs. Tony Romo needs to stay away from making critical mistakes and it’s tough to believe Romo can do such a thing."
Walter Football drop us to 21st. No comments provided, but they have six teams ahead of us with worse records. Bah.
[Update]
ColdHardFootballFacts, leave us at 15th. "The Cowboys are the target of much mockery, but they still have the talent. They lead the NFL at 6.8 yards per play, and were a couple of yards away from beating the Giants and Broncos."
Don Banks at SI.com keeps us in 16th place. "The Cowboys have opened the season win, loss, win, loss, win, and now stagger to their Week 6 bye. They've beaten three teams that were winless at the time in Tampa Bay, Carolina and Kansas City, and lost to the two undefeated teams they've faced: the Giants and Broncos. You sensing a pattern here? Because you -- and Wade Phillips -- definitely should be."
Covers.com moves us up one to 16th. "The Cowboys picked up a huge win against Kansas City as a loss there could have sent them on a huge spiral. A bye this week before Atlanta and Seattle at home."
Here's how the NFC East fared:

Surprised You Don't Mention the Sagarin
Ratings, especially since they use quantitative methods to arrive at their rankings
They have us ranked at 16th, and if we were to play Atlanta next week instead of getting a bye, would be two point underdogs..
i like the way they look at the rankings
and i agree with them, although i don’t really believe SF is better than us
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
thanks for pointing that out
but I initially decided to go for sites that provide at least some type of comment, with two exceptions:
- whatifsports because they basically have a machine doing their prankings (no typo :-)
- nfl.com for reasons that, honestly, I don’t remember, but now I’m stuck in a rut.
The data table at the bottom was basically an afterthought, but I might include the Sagarin ratings next time.

Not surprising...
Middle of the pack seems about right for now considering we can play with anyone (NYG and Den), yet can almost lose to anyone as well (KC). This is what happens when you hit on only half your cylinders.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
Only surprise to me is the Eagles.....
Yahoo has them at 3? They were completely dismantled by New Orleans, albeit with out McRib but really….they beat Carolina, KC, and TB…..sounds vaguely familiar. And we are 16th, 13 spots from them? These guys are garbage……
Used to be CowboyinIraq at BSR, but I am not in Iraq anymore, so that didn't really make much sense........
I'm not surprised
and frankly, i don’t care. We’re 3-2, 1 win below where i thought we’d be and to be fair nobody expected anything out of the broncos.
We need to come out hot after the bye.
rankings only matter in college football
In Romo we Trust

Don't do that to yourself man.
Thats like a stomach virus, after you’ve purged everything…then comes the bile..leaves the worlds’ ***iest taste in your mouth.
Yes, they're good, but as good as their record?
Probably not. Look at how many times Eli’s been sacked… Try twice. He’s on his way to getting sacked 6 times during the whole season? That ain’t going to happen, the only team that they have faced with a pass rush is our team and we didn’t had one at the time. Denver has as good an OLine as them and Orton felt the pass rush.
Eli still has to kiss the ground many times, if he keeps having as good numbers, maybe the Giants are for real.
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
I dont
think there’s undefeated good, but they’re very very good. I dont think anyone is that good this year.
I think the Colts are undefeated good.
Did you see the game where Payton barely touched the ball and still won? Yeah..
look for more consistency out of the bye
I believe the cowboy players are starting to see how embarrassing they are and coming out of the bye they will be fired up and better prepared for the rest of the season. and what better way to get back in the hunt then a win over a good atlanta team.

P.S. the giants arent that good
The giants have played nobody good, the best team they played was us and they won off a last second field goal after we turned it over 5 times. We will see what the giants have when they play on the road in new orleans.

mediocre middle
we almost play up or down to our competition…
not quite good enough to beat the good teams, not quite bad enough to lose to the bad teams…
I agree with CHF, we “still have the talent” if can just avoid beating ourselves with mistakes, we have the potential to move up
What's most annoying about these power rankings is the Eagles
They’re always ranked so high. They’ve beaten the exact same teams we have. And their loss? Came from the OTHER team most consider to be the “best team in the NFL”, New Orleans. Somehow, they’re way up in the top 10 on just about every list, and we’re usually ranked in the bottom half. Style points, I guess?
Ridiculous. Yes, this team has blemishes. Every team does. I don’t see 15 teams that are better than us right now, though. That’s absolutely absurd.
Epic Fail since 1985
What would this week be like if...
… the Chiefs went for two at the end of regulation and converted? I can’t imagine. The haters would have absolutely loved it.
I can’t help but think of how well our guys played, with the exception of turnovers and penalties. Yeah, they are part of the game, and continue to be a thorn in the side of the Cowboys, but overall we played fairly well on both sides of the football.
Colin Cowherd said that good teams can overcome mistakes and win football games. Bad teams cannot overcome mistakes. The Chiefs made few mistakes, but couldn’t win that game at home. Dallas lost the turnover battle 0-4, yet almost beat the team many have ranked as #1. Most teams would have been crushed, but the Cowboys (a good team) hung in there and gave themselves a chance.
