Cowboys sign Allen Rossum
From Adam Schefter's Twitter
Filed to ESPN: The Cowboys will sign veteran returner Allen Rossum, whom the 49ers released last week to make room for Michael Crabtree.
I like the move a lot. Crayton's been decent, but to have a solid return man for once is good, in my opinion. I wonder who they'll let go to sign him. I need 12 more words, so I think I'll just babble. Go Cowboys!!!

Rossum!!
I really don’t know how hes done recently, but he used to be an electric return man with occasional fumble problems.
I like the move. Its worth a shot.We need better return teams, and i think our return guys are a major reason for the poor performance.

He was good last year
But didn’t do anything at all this year, besides not fumbling.

Man that was fast, but this is a sore spot, Rossum could provide a good 1 year patch until next year's draft.

Interesting...
Can’t find anything to confirm it yet, but they did release CB Cletis Gordon today to make room for someone. A returner would make sense.
Hmm…
Here’s what Todd Archer has to say about Rossum:
Here’s an issue of adding Rossum – he plays only one spot. The Cowboys are already carrying two kickers, a third quarterback and a longsnapper on the roster. Adding another one-position player to the roster is difficult. They appear to be ready to do the 54-man shuffle with running back Chauncey Washington from the practice squad to active roster while Marion Barber and Felix Jones recover fully from injuries.
I don’t know what Rossum has left in the tank and I don’t know if that is worth a roster spot. But he has a history with special teams coach Joe DeCamillis.

With this team, field position is more important than most
…given our offensive inconsistency thus far.
It’s a calculated risk and I support it.

i support carrying a kickoff guy.
I don’t support having a kicker, punter, long snapper, kickoff guy and punt returner. I guess we could put McGee on the practice squad? does he need to clear wavers? We’re really thin depth wise.

He's listed as a DB. I don't know why he couldn't, in a pinch.
We release one DB, we sign another. We remove some uncertainty from our return game (what was Crayton thinking, or Newman?) and we protect Felix and Miles from kickoff returns.
If we want to start talking about luxuries and carrying too many one job guys, what about Folk?

I like this move a lot...
We need the help in the return game and this should certainly add a little excitement to punt returns. Plus, Rossum is extremely knowledgeable about DeCamillis’s schemes since they worked together in Atlanta (assuming the time line in my head is correct). Considering that most of DeCamillis’s moves seem to be working, I see no reason not to trust him on this one.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

He's definitely better than Crayton, but thats not saying much
Here is a scouting report
Rossum is an aging veteran player who has experience as a cornerback, but in reality, at this stage of his career, he is just a return specialist — and a very marginal one at that. He is very small with a diminutive frame, which is a huge drawback as a cover man and with his ability to break tackles with the ball in his hands. He can still handle spot duty as a defensive back, but he isn’t nearly as explosive, quick or athletic as he once was. However, he plays hard and is experienced in reading routes. As a cover man, he can be out muscled by the bigger wide receivers in the league and doesn’t offer much against the run. As a returner, he is extremely sure handed, but his explosiveness with the ball in his hands has greatly diminished. He sees the holes and alleys like he always has, but struggles to get to where he needs to be.

Crayton may be the least aggressive return man
that I’ve ever seen. Rossum would be a vast improvement. Even a declining Rossum. But is he worth the roster spot?

makes the team better, yes. Anything that makes the team better is worth a roster spot.

Crayton
knows he can’t take it the distance so he tries to get the yards he can. You don’t get the big returns but you also don’t get the sideline to sideline loss of 5 returns either. He is usually sure handed (he fumbles one punt and all of a sudden everyone calls for his head). He is pretty good with fair catches in the redzone too (when to call them, when to let it go). I disagree with this signing whole heartedly. The cowboys have more depth issues than KR and PR which will become a much more serious problem is someone gets hurt. I can’t believe Dallas is going to try to toe the injury-line again after what happened with the Romo injury last year. I thought bringing in Kitna meant they learned their lesson.. guess not.

Well, if the only reason you are back there is your sure handedness, then you have to expect to be replaced when you get the dropsies. Also, there’s not guarantee that Rossum takes his spot – he might be just for kick returns, since Austin will be getting more playing time and they would probably prefer to not have felix back there either.

we need help in our return game
so what if one less LB, DB or OL suits up, hidden yardage in the return game is very important.
So what if he’s over the hill, in his prime he was a 4.3 guy, I’ll take a 4.4 guy any day over Crayton.

by Terry on Oct 13, 2009 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
one less may matter because
we already have four specialists, which is stretched enough. We need a better PR, and hidden yardage is critical, but so are coverage teams.
The fact is the team hasn’t addressed PR in years. I would just put Newman back there.

that's my question - who isn't on the 45 to make room?
I like the potential to really help make this special teams unit elite if he’s still got it, but who is inactive on game day to make room? For the moment he’ll take Sensi’s spot, which Gordon was filling. But after Sensi comes back, who on the regular 45? Alan Ball? Maybe most likely, but that hurts depth because he can play CB and S, while Rossum is a marginal at best CB backup. Or LB? Williams? Butler? Octavian? We’re only rolling 2 extra oline as it is, so we can’t cut there. It’s just tough to suit up 3 extra specialists on game day.

I have seen the dude in person and he is an absolute burner that would give this offense a shot in the arm as well as the special teams. Don’t get me wrong, Shipley is a great player, but Ford is faster and I think will be the better game-breaker in the NFL.

for Medicare after this season. But seriously, I like him too. He’s a gutsy player but I’m thinking he is one of those kids who excels in college but disappears at the pro level. I’d rather take someone who can return punts and has more upside as a receiving threat.

I like the move for two reasons
Joe D knows this guy, he knows what he brings to the table and he must know that whatever Rossum is it is better than crayton and newman.
After that game, Joe D must have talked to WP and said we need something better and if a good player becomes available, we need to get them a proven returner because these two guys are not cutting the mustard. I like the move because it is a coach holding the players accountable. So even if Rossum is only as good to a little better than newman and crayton it shows them that the team is going to try to find someone else to do the job.
I would also like to add that this affects felix (when he gets back), crayton, and miles because one did punts and the other did KR; so now rossum will take these duties from these players. Miles no longer has to fill in even if felix comes back, felix is soley put on offense, and I believe crayton will be put in as the slot guy. I think this move impacts crayton most of all. I say that because if miles no longer covers ST plays he will be seeing more playing time, crayton is the one who will be the odd man out, the ST play for crayton is now gone because rossum is now there. I think that crayton needs to read between the lines and see that he needs to make everything count from here on out; because next year for him is looking a little murky.

Even if Rossum has nothing left in the tank, I like the move because it sends a message that the continous f-ups on game day will not be tolerated. Crayton should be playing with an edge every week and not be comfortable feeling like his roster spot is secure.
I bet Crayton plays like a man possessed against Atlanta because he just lost two spots in three days.
by Billito on Oct 13, 2009 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
More to the point, he must realize that as of right now he has lost at least one position and he is looking over
his shoulder at miles aiming to take his starting job. Hopefully the energy Crayton puts into talking if focused in to some production on the field when they play atlanta; he is going to have plenty of time to reflect on the situation.

So what if he takes another roster spot.
As long as he doesn’t come in and muff punts, I’m cool with the move. It’s more important (In my mind…) to have someone that can make something happen/not screw things up on special teams. Crayton has been downright awful so far. Rossum knows what he’s doing, and has been a decent/good (If not great) return man through his career.
It doesn’t matter that he’d be taking a roster spot from a player that would probably never see the field, anyhow.

Their go Jerry again
Work Ogltree in rotation more he need the reps. The guy is fast with quick feet. HE was taking returns out of the in-zone and was taking it to at least the 20.
Sooner or later u had the feel he was going to take one home with a couple of blocks. He did had one miscue with a fumble but he can be work on as a rookie.
Once again a rookie talented is stall (ex. Choice). If anything we need to bring in someone for the o-line. It has become apparent that Flozell can no longer block or keep his poise.
I remember a comment Madden said about him " You would think he was a bum by all the penalties but he is one of the elite tackles " so u would look pass the flags.
NOT any more ,he cant block at the LT position anymore, he killed a couples of drives, plus the flags. The guy was getting beat on a 1 on 1’s. The line collapse on a 3 man rush A 3 MAN RUSH!!!!!! ( Flo still could not contain his man).
I hope we come out this bye with adjustments to the line. I can not c Flo starting next season or the remainder of the season as the LT.He may be a guard and they could possibly swing Davis to LT , but FLO might b threw.
The line need help and i mean real bad that should have been our area of interest. Instead of an old timer as a kick returner.

I absolutely support this move.
I seriously disagree with the scouting reports saying that Rossum is a marginal return man. He averaged 26.8 on kickoffs and 14.9 on punts just LAST SEASON. Far from marginal. More like pretty damn good. More like better than anyone we have.
With Felix limping, and Austin set to take on a bigger role on offense, how does this not make sense? And dead the Ogletree talk. I’d like to see him contribute on offense, but I was sitting in the endzone at the KC game and from my vantage, Ogletree’s vision is subpar. Plus one fumble out of bounds is all I need to see.
Rossum still has great speed and is a major upgrade for the Cowboys return game.

Not to mention the fact that it keeps Felix off the return team.
Rather see him doing what he does best, working with the offense. Imagine the cringe you’d feel if he got injured on a kick return. I can take an injury a lot better if it’s in the performance of your primary responsibility. No reason for Felix to be risking injury as a kick returner.

Rossum doesn't fumble much, either.
The Cowboys have 5 fumbles on returns already this year, which is how many Rossum has in the last 3 years, encompassing 255 returns.

I don't know
But if Scandrick 32 is on board and endorsing Rossum, then I’m sold. Age doesn’t matter, the player himself matters more. Is he still productive? People are saying he is one of the best at his position. This directly affects Felix too. I’m liking the sound of this. We should have Felix concentrating on being a reciever more than a Kick/Punt returner, So I feel this is nothing but a positive. Are we also looking at Matt Jones?

Having Crayton back there on punts was boring and he couldn’t make a move…. And now that Austin will be a starting WR and Felix is coming back off injury, I dont want either of them on kick returns.
