The elephant in the room.

We all know it’s there. During this slight pause in the season, I think we should take an honest look at the cowboy’s roster, top to bottom, in terms of positive player productivity. I feel some of our frustration grows from being duped into believing the sometimes popular moniker of "a talented team that underachieves." After conducting my evaluation, I conclude that management has failed to upgrade or replace several critical positions, despite being allowed to participate in a yearly draft (along with 31 other teams). If this cycle of poor talent evaluation and prognostication continues, this team will never reach the performance levels we so desperately desire.

I placed players on the roster into 3 categories: Hit (tangible production, Miss (non-tangible production), JSO (Jury’s Still Out). Those players placed in the JSO category are usually young players, who still need an opportunity to move up a roster spot. I judge these players a little less harshly than players who have been on the team for 3 or more years. (note – there is one player who receives an N/A, not applicable)

My analysis is as follows:

Adams, Flozell

T

12 Hit

Anderson, Deon

FB

3 JSO

Austin, Miles

WR

4 JSO

Ball, Alan

CB

WR

6 Miss (not a number 2, look at career #’s)

Davis, Leonard

G

9 Hit (hopefully we can replace around him)

Folk, Nick

K

3 Hit (see what drafting a kicker will do for ya)

Free, Doug

OT

3 Miss (not trustworthy)

Gurode, Andre

C

Hamlin, Ken

Phillips, John

TE

0 JSO

Preston, Duke

C

5 JSO (maybe he can help)

Procter, Cory

C

5 JSO (not even close, the reason Preston was signed)

Ratliff, Jay

NT

5 Hit (THE MAN!)

Romo, Tony

QB

7 Hit (we hope he will deliver more consistently)

Scandrick, Orlando

CB

2 JSO

OLB

3 JSO (but he better get going)

Ware, DeMarcus

OLB

5 Hit (needs others though)

Watkins, Pat

Williams, Brandon

LB

0 SJO

Williams, Jason

LB

0 JSO

Williams, Roy E.

WR

6 JSO (but if you count career in Detroit, a Miss)

Witten, Jason

TE

7 Hit (has it been that long?)

Percentage of Roster Hits...

15 out 52 players (or only 28%) on roster I consider benificial to team improvement (Hits). That figure keeps my optimism for a better future severely in check.

If you believe I have been too critical or cautious of certain players, remember such gold mines as David Lafluer, Kareem Lattimore, Dewayne Goodrich, QC, James Marten, Skyler Green, Montavious Stanley, Justin Berlault to name a few. This does not include the most incredible draft class of all, 2004: Julius Jones (gone), Jacob Rogers (gone), Stephen Peterman (gone), Bruce Thorton (gone), Sean Ryan (gone), Nathan Jones (gone), Jacques Reeves (thank God he’s gone), and Patrick Crayton (oh boy, we still have him!)

Unfortunately in the world of Jerry, he continues to believe he actually does an adequate job as GM. His ego has not yet let go of the fact that certain men can find players and certain men cannot. Jones falls into the latter category. Until he realizes he and Stephen need intimate input from men the likes of Polain, Reese, Rooney, and Belichick, this franchise will never return to glory’s past

Opps..percentages of Roster Hits...

Forgot to include most important stat: 15 out 52 players (or only 28%) on roster I consider benificial to team improvement (Hits). That figure keeps my optimism for a better future severely in check.

I Like Your Approach

But I think you’re generally harsh in your evaluations, especially with Gurode, Spears and Colombo. Only allowing a player to fall into the category of being a Hit or Miss once the jury has returned limits the evaluation process. I think Spears is a decent if not impressive end, given the system he plays in. If we had better coaching some of these players would be more highly regarded.

Agree that our safety play is still pretty awful. I’ve officially off the Hamlin bandwagon.

I stand corrected...

Just looked at sack giving up for last year. Gurode 2.0 sacks (ranked 12th in league) Columbo 5.5 (15th) but Davis…4.5 (24th). Maybe he should be a JSO. Other two, more likely hits. I guess I just can’t get the track races to Romo out of my head every flippin time we play Philly.

Flawed Logic

Offensive linemen that block on the edge are nearly always going to allow more sacks, as that’s where the best pass rushers in the league line up.

If you are calling Columbo a MISS, obviously you didn’t pay attention to the RT position Pre-Columbo.

When healthy, our offensive line is in the top half of the league. However, this is based on overally play. If you factor in penalties, the overall effectiveness of our line drops some.

because...

Olshansky still has the possiblity of 1/2 a career in Dallas. Brooking might only have 1 or 2 more productive seasons. From Thomas to him, these guys are band aids bacause other backers have not worked out.

by Toughquestions on Oct 14, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

how so...

Both are brand new members of a defense currently ranked 20th in th league. When I consider how impactful these guys are right now to their division counterparts, there is no comparision. Other three defenses sit in the top 10 NFL: (Giants (1) 2.10 yds a game "Is that unreal?), (Eagles (2), Wash (3). If this defense creeps into the top 1/2 of the league by year’s end, then maybe these guys get their due from me. Does anyone remember when Zimmer was here and the Cowboys had the 1 ranked in the league. Imagine if they had that now?

Sorry dude,

but the elephant owns the team. Jerry the GM is not going anywhere, so you and I are just going to have to deal with it.

by greatwhitenorth on Oct 14, 2009 10:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I deal with it by being honest...

This team will only collect a certain talent level. Certainly not moronic talent like the silver and black, but not at the caliber of the gints or steelers. Thus, my expectations are real. I enjoy the fight every week, but do not get caught up in thinking this team will catch some “magical fire”.

by Toughquestions on Oct 14, 2009 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think your assessments of talent are lacking

as a Monday morning quarterback your assessments are pretty absurd and when you consider that Jerry has to make the assessments before seeing their Sunday performances I think maybe he’s better at it than you, and that says a lot more about your assessment ability than it does Jerry’s.

It seems that you had some time on your hands and thought, “Wow, I’ll post an article. What can I do to create negative ‘stats’ that point the finger at Jerry.” When you make the assessments yourself and then reference percentages it means nothing really. Your measurement seems to be that all players must be long-term Cowboys and potential Pro-Bowlers to be a Hit. Anything less and they aren’t a contributor.

I think this team has the talent necessary to win in today’s NFL. This is not the same NFL as the 1990’s (see Raf’s article). Coaching seems to be lacking and not utilizing the talent effectively but I do not think the team, in its current state, is lacking in talent. Are we the most talented team? No, but we’re better than average I think.

It is not my job to assess talent...

it is his. I believe absurb is a strong word. Different assessment than yours maybe, but my stance has merit. Look at his picks, they have not yielded the results in terms of serious opportunities. As a fan, I reserve the right to be critical, with hindsight mind you, becuase I am also there to praise when decisions are wise. Being a true fan does not necessary mean blind loyalty. Fans are allowed to display their disappointment, that is why gate attendance drops when a team is consistently bad. Where is the payoff in the las twelve seasons? I talking not talking super bowls, I’m talking about a chance to compete every year for playoff birth.

by Toughquestions on Oct 14, 2009 11:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If you're using only competing for a playoff berth as a measure,

then 7 of the past 12 years the Boys have been competitive for a playoff birth. Only the 3 5-11 and 2 6-10 seasons were they completely out of it. Even an 8-8 team with Aikman made it, though Tony’s 9-7 team last year didn’t. If I remember correctly they made the playoffs the other 6 years.

As for being competitive in the playoffs those 6 years, they were blown out by Carolina, Minnesota, and Arizona, and then Carolina again, however the last two times they were in the playoffs the games came down the last minute (Seattle) and almost the last second (NYG). They were very competitive, they just didn’t pull it out in the end.

So, really, what’s your measure of success?

Also see "Poor Drafting Kills"...

that post highlights GM Jerry’s fine scouting abilties all the way back to the 90’s.

I agree...

With your assessment of the 2004 draft but isn’t that more of an indictment of Bill Parcells and not Jerry Jones?

Since Bill has left in 2006 here’s who Jerry has drafted:
1 26 26 Anthony Spencer Linebacker Purdue
3 3 67 James Marten Offensive Tackle Boston College
4 4 103 Isaiah Stanback Wide Receiver Washington
4 23 122 Doug Free Offensive Tackle Northern Illinois
6 4 178 Nick Folk Kicker Arizona
6 21 195 Deon Anderson Fullback Connecticut
7 2 212 Courtney Brown Defensive Back Cal Poly
7 27 237 Alan Ball Cornerback Illinois
2008 Draft
1 22 22 Felix Jones Running Back Arkansas
1 25 25 Mike Jenkins Cornerback South Florida
2 30 61 Martellus Bennett Tight End Texas A&M
4 23 122 Tashard Choice Running Back Georgia Tech
5 8 143 Orlando Scandrick Cornerback Boise State
6 1 167 Erik Walden Linebacker Middle Tennessee State
2009 Draft
3 5 69 Jason Williams Linebacker Western Illinois
3 11 75 Robert Brewster Offensive Tackle Ball State
4 1 101 Stephen McGee Quarterback Texas A&M
4 10 110 Victor Butler Linebacker Oregon State
4 20 120 Brandon Williams Defensive End Texas Tech
5 7 153 DeAngelo Smith Cornerback Cincinnati
5 30 166 Michael Hamlin Safety Clemson
5 36 172 David Buehler Kicker USC
6 24 197 Stephen Hodge Safety TCU
6 35 208 John Phillips Tight End Virginia
7 18 227 Mike Mickens Cornerback Cincinnati
7 20 229 Manuel Johnson Wide Receiver Oklahoma

Folks, you may not like Jerry much but that ain’t bad really. Our developmental QB in McGee, 2 starting quality RB in Choice and Felix, 1 great FB in Deon (who we don’t appreciate enough), 1 good 3rd TE in Phillips and a possible great 2nd in Marty B, 2 possible OTs in Free and Brewster, 2 good kickers in Buehler and Folk, 2 good CBs in Jenkins and Scandrick plus a useful 4th CB/special teamer in Ball, and 4 LB projects in the Williams’s, Butler, and Hodge.

That’s 17 players on the roster from these three drafts. I suspect that compares favorably to other drafts, given that’s almost 6 players per year.

By my count Parcells in 4 drafts got 19 players to stick. I’m including in that list Julius, Carpenter, Fasano, McQuistan, Pettiti, Hatcher, Watkins and Reeves, eight players many of us have had problems with.

Parcells does get credit for a great 2005 draft with DWare, MB3 and Ratliff and a good draft in 2003 with TNew and Witten (along with undrafted Romo). But his 2004 and 2006 drafts are essentially wasted unless the light turns on for Carpenter and Hatcher.

Jones since Parcells has had 1 OK draft with Folk, Deon, Ball and Spencer, 1 great draft with Felix, Jenkins, Scandrick, Choice, and Bennett, and then this last draft which will have some good players, though we know that Buehler is nice and Butler can provide a spark.

In other words, you can bash Jerry if you want, but make sure you give him the appropriate blame and credit based upon the facts :)

I stopped reading your list right after I saw that...

…you graded Gurode a “miss”. Are you kidding? He went to the Pro Bowl twice.

Ask Haynesworth if Gurode is a miss.

The rest of your post became meaningless after I realized that your judgment of football talent was greatly skewed.

You decided on your point and then made your grades conform to that point. Not to mention you’re doing this in a vacuum. Take a look at any NFL franchise’s draft record since 2004, I’d guess we’re in the top half in terms of productive results. Remember that drafts include undrafted free agents from that year as well.

I'm confused!

How can an undrafted FA who makes the roster every year be a MISS? A 1st rounder who barely gets on the field I can understand, but a FREE AGENT who makes the team every year and produces pretty consistantly when thrown to, and is one of the teams TOP Special teamers? I’m talking about Sam Hurd, of course. What are you expecting from your FA’s?

With all due respect, the talent is there...

… and that’s not the issue.

It’s the coaching that’s the problem.

Deep down inside, any proven coach would be salivating to possess the weapons our Cowboys currently have.

Is playing smart too much to ask?

Agree.. with the exception of

A dynamic receiver that can stretch the field, keeping the deep safety honest…. and a playmaker at safety that can allow our corners to be more aggressive.

And Yes, I do realize that it’s not easy to find these type of players and about 20 other teams are looking for the same thing!!!

You need a middle of the road category

for a guy like crayton. He surely is no miss. And spears – look at first round picks around him and carp, not a lot of teams do well at the end of the first round. Spears has been solid and reliable. Hes no miss. Maybe Watkins too – though he is no starter, hes provided half decent depth and good ST play. Same with Hatcher – having guys provide decent depth but not stepping into the starter role doesn’t make them a “miss”. Though Hatcher is closer to a miss than the last 3.

Gurode and COlumbo are hits without a doubt. While Columbo has had a rough start this year, hes been our most consistant lineman in the past. There was a reason he was named offensive MVP last year.

While I don’t think were as talented as a few teams, you give a really harsh evaluation of these guys – the only way they earn “hit” status is if they’re near pro bowl caliber. You give no credit to role players.

and Gurode was in the Pro Bowl twice and he still listed him as a "miss"

I think if Toughquestions did a little more research with an open mind, he’d have to come to a different set of conclusions. He must have been a bit hurried in his post and approached it with some preconceived ideas.
