Ask The Falcoholic!
Man, aren't bye weeks the worst? A week with your favorite team not playing football while everyone else is just about one of the worst things I can imagine, even if you guys did watch all three divisional rivals implode over the weekend.
Now that you're back into the business of playing futbol, I figured I'd head over and see if you have any questions about the Atlanta Falcons. Want to know why Michael Turner is scoring in gobs but averaging under four yards a carry? Curious about just how great Roddy White really is? Wondering if our defense can stop you? Then you've come to the right place!
I'll be checking in all week to answer your questions, so fire away. If you could recommend this so it stays up top for everyone who wants to ask questions, that'd be great. Here's to a good game this weekend!

what's your take on how the Falcons will defense us?
Do you think they will look to take away our running game or passing game?

Both would be ideal
I think we’ll attempt to shut down the run and hope our defense is opportunistic enough to capitalize on any Tony Romo mistakes. Your ground game scares the hell out of me.

I just was curious because it looked as though you guys set out to shut down Forte last night and you did that, but your secondary looked vulnerable. If Cutler had a good game, I think you lose that game. Just my thoughts.

We actually succeeded in nailing Cutler down through most of the game
Save a few big pass plays. I think we keyed on the passing game and were able to stop Forte because he just hasn’t been very good this year, not that we were devoting all our effort to stopping him. I’m concerned about your hydra of running backs.

how has your run defense been this season?
In Romo we Trust
by Terry on Oct 19, 2009 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Up and down
Did reasonably well against the Dolphins, not great against the Panthers, poorly against the Patriots and have shut down the Bears and 49ers in back-to-back weeks. We moved Jamaal Anderson, a miscast defensive end, inside and he’s given us an immense boost recently. We’re still probably average.

I remember Chris Houston coming out in the draft
Great physical tools, baaad instincts. I’m assuming that is still the case?
What kind defense do you guys run? do you blitz a lot or rely on your four man rush? What kind of coverage schemes do you guys run?
by quincyyyyy on Oct 19, 2009 3:50 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That's still the case
In terms of overall D, we mix it up a lot. You’ll mostly see us rely on the four or even three man rush to get the job done up front. In coverage, we mix zone and man depending on what’s working any given week.

do you think the Falcons plan on doubling Witten or just putting a safety on him?

Again, a very good coverage safety. I can’t imagine with all your weapons that we can afford to double him up.

have been more than impressed with the level of intensity and leadership that Keith Brooking has brought to this team. Tell us a little about what he brought to the Falcons before he left and the perspective from your camp of what he is doing this year with the Cowboys (leading the team in tackles).

He was a great player for a very long time
Who looked to be about cooked last year. It was his blown coverage that allowed the Cardinals to win the game against us late, and we had a talented young group of linebackers and let him walk. There’s not doubt he’s a great leader and the kind of guy any team would like to have around the locker room. Not surprised he’s rejuvenated himself in Dallas, and I’m grateful he got the chance.

The national medai seemed to christen Matt Ryan's performance
against the 49ers as his “breakout game” of 2009. However last night (although I only looked at the box score) he seemed to struggle before his final drive. What is you assessment of his level of play so far this year. Has he been inconsistent, improved from last year, or is he in the middle of a sophmore slump?
The Knights season may have just ended, but the Cowboys year is just begining!

Improved
Last week was the one exception to the rule, and the key was that he was pressured constantly. When you consider he still didn’t get sacked, he did reasonably well against the Bears. He’s still growing and we’re all a little concerned with overthrows and underthrows, but mostly he’s been a revelation again this year.

I looked at the stats posted by both teams
and we both seem pretty even in defense and penalties, Cowboys ranking 22rd and Falcons ranking 23rd in total defense, Cowboys committing 31 penalties for 251 yds and Falcons committing 29 penalties for 229 yards.
However, we are ranked 2nd in total offense and Falcons 18th. The biggest difference though is the turnover ratio for both teams, Cowboys at -4 and Falcons at +5.
These numbers would indicate turnovers will probably decide the game, you agree?

Turner has been medicore at best and my fantasy team can prove it...lol
His best week by far was week was 5 with 97 yds and 3 TDs…He had a lousy 30 yds last night. Prior to that he had 56, 105, 65 yards rushing.vHe is no where near the RB he was last season. In fact, he is looking sluggish and overweight, but I heard a comment by him saying he is the same playing weight as last season…I don’t know about that one..

by Boyzfan94 on Oct 19, 2009 4:47 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
There's something going on there
To me, it’s not so much a weight issue. It’s that he doesn’t seem to hit the hole fast enough or hard enough. If he gets into open space he looks like the same Turner from 2008, but he’s not putting enough power into those crucial first steps.

Emmitt Smith had 373 attempts in 92 and they went on to win 2 more superbowls, not to mention he had many productive seasons after that.

Yes...
…and Eric Dickerson had some of his best seasons after surpassing 370…but not many RBs are Emmitt Smith and Eric Dickerson. And the Curse of 370 doesn’t say that your career is done, just that your next season you are going to get hurt or experience a significant dropoff.
(I believe Emmitt actually suffered a dropoff in production from the 373 season to the season immediately after that one, but I could be wrong. Can’t look it up right now).

I have a Norwood-related question
Did he sleep with the offensive coorindator’s wife? Perhaps run over Arthur Blank’s dog?
The guy is an explosive player who consistently averages over 5 YPC, with the potential to be a change-of-pace back on the level of Ahmad Bradshaw or Felix Jones, and yet he is used FAR less than those comparable players. In fact, he was used so little last year that the Falcons rode Michael Turner for a lead-leaguing 370+ carries, a number which most backs never recover from (Google: Football Outsiders’ “Curse of 370”
Why run your high-priced lead back into the ground like that when you have a talented, inexpensive back-up just waiting to take some of the workload???

Exactly
Norwood has been hurt twice this year already, and he could miss the game against you guys. Our other option is Jason Snelling, who is built like a bull, runs like a bull and catches well out of the backfield. It hurts our offense not to have Norwood, yes, but when we don’t have him I fail to understand why Snelling doesn’t get more carries.

He's a freakish athlete
And by some advanced metrics from Football Outsiders and the like, he’s been our best coverage cornerback. He’s short, yes, and that will hurt him at times, but he’s got the leaping ability to make up for it. His biggest problem is that he doesn’t always turn to look at the ball, leading to the occasional mistake or pass interference.

ATT: 64

comp %: 57.8

For some reason, our offense seems to lose its luster in the second half
I think it’s part defensive adjustment, part automatic conversion to more conservative playcalling. It’s clear that we have to do something to combat that, and it’s definitely a concern.

They shut down the run and put double coverage on Tony Gonzalez
This was before Roddy White broke back out, so they took away our best two options. They were also able to take advantage of a weak run defense up the middle.

Defense?
I think most of us are famaliar with the talent Atlanta has on the offensive side of the ball (Ryan, Turner, Gonzo, White are downright scary imo), but I really don’t know a lot about your defense. Could you give us a quick primer on that group? How good are they? Who are the players to watch? etc..
by Spaceball on Oct 20, 2009 1:51 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Gladly
DE John Abraham: One of the best pass-rushers in the league, lackluster against the run.
DT Jon Babineaux: Underrated multi-dimensional threat. Rushes and holds the run quite well.
DT Jamaal Anderson: Converted defensive end who is excellent against the run.
DE Kroy Biermann: Average against the run, but blossoming as a pass rusher.
You’ll see a lot of three-and-four man rushes from that group. Biermann, Babineaux and Abraham are the guys to watch out for as far as Romo’s concerned, and I would advise against running at Anderson.
OLB Stephen Nicholas: Fast, athletic linebacker who hits hard. Not great against the pass.
MLB Curtis Lofton: One of the most complete linebackers in the game already. Flies around the field making plays.
OLB Mike Peterson: Not bad against the run, but his bread and butter is the passing game.
This is a great group that cancels out eachothers’ weaknesses. Three guys you’ll want to worry the most about, particularly Lofton.
CB Chris Houston: Great athleticism, routinely forgets to turn and look for the ball. Hasn’t mastered the mental side of being a corner.
CB Brent Grimes: Improving cover corner whose size is his biggest weakness.
FS Thomas DeCoud: Ballhawk safety, excellent coverage skills.
SS Erik Coleman: Distinctly average to above-average across the board.
Obviously, this is the unit you’ll want to pick on. With Brian Williams gone for the season, it’s going to be a mix of young players vying for snaps. Hard to know what to expect, but that’s our weakest looking link at the moment.

Questions
First, it is nice to have a rather unbiased source here, because a proper breakdown is good. The way I see it is Dallas really needs to get this win if they are going to pose a threat to a wildcard position this season. With a loss already to the Giants, a loss here, and assuming we split Philly at the best, we are looking at a 0-3 hole in the conference, which I hate this year, as there is a huge log jam at the wildcard spot. Assuming we have the Saints, Giants, Vikings, and let’s say for arguments sake, Cardinals, in as the division leaders, that leaves 2 spots for the likes of Philly/Atlanta/Chicago/Green Bay/Dallas and potentially the Niners and Panthers, depending on how they do. Yeah…this game is huge…
For the defensive break down, correct me if I am wrong but isn’t the overall size of your dline rather small. I know Abraham is only about 260, Babin is about 280 or so, I think? Anderson is somewhat larger, but Biermann is only listed at 260 as well. Dallas has a huge offensive line, and when they preform, the running game can be outstanding. Do you think that this is going to be a clear disadvantage for the Falcons.
Assuming Peterson is going to have to deal with Witten, probably with a mix of safety play, Bennett is also capable of having a big day, as well as the backs coming out on screens. I also think the extra attention on slowing down Miles, I think that the underneath passing game is going to be another advantage. I actually don’t see us getting many big plays, if any at all, on you guys, but slowly chip away at it, and it will be close throughout, where Dallas needs a big play at the end and either they get it with a huge play(a la Chiefs or Panthers) or the miss it(a la Giants or Broncos). Either way, should be a big game.
by Zach22 on Oct 20, 2009 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
D-Line is small
We make up for it in mobility. These guys have great moves to get around your bulkier linemen, which isn’t to say that they won’t be knocked flat on some plays. If you have the opportunity to watch a little tape of John Abraham, you’ll see what I mean.

Keep in mind that these are basically uninformed observations. If I’m way off, correct me. I can take it.
1) Play-calling, both offensive and defensive
2) Tony Romo’s decision making
3) Lack of a true #1 option at receiver
4) Mobility along the offensive line
5) Jerry Jones

Not sure I agree
The mobility of the line is good in run blocking. Where it suffers some is in pass blocking. They actually pull really well.
Jerry Jones. Hmmm. Hard to say. No one really knows what goes on in the front office and draft room, etc. But his drafts recently have been pretty good. He’s not Kraft, but he’s also not a Snyder or Davis. I place him middle of the road – great in some areas, worse in others. I wish he weren’t quite the marketer he is, but oh well.
Witten is probably the same as having a #1 WR, just like TG has been. He gets open, he makes plays anywhere on the field.
I view decision-making as reading the field properly and throwing to the right place. That’s not really his problem IMO. I think it is simply trying to force the action. He needs to stop it of course, but it’s perhaps even harder since a lot of QBs can improve over time in the former (like Kerry Collins did), but that latter is more of a “heat of the moment” crime.

though I’d say the O line’s problems don’t stem from mobility as much as they do dissecting blitzes and making the proper pickups. This line does great against 4 man rushes, but overloads tend to confuse them.

Huh? No idea what you're talking about...
Did we play Oakland? We didn’t lose, did we? I sure hope not. Anyway, gotta go. I just left work early and am in route to Citizen’s Bank Park to watch my Phillies polish off the Dodgers.

It was crazy over there last night. I work in NYC and I’ll have some sort of Phillies gear on all series – It should be an interesting week or 2.

I appreciate hearing that
I’ve been a Falcons fan all my life, so I know I’ve appreciated those fans of other teams who treat you with a little dignity whether you win or lose (and through the 90’s, it was mostly lose). You guys have asked great questions and been welcoming, so it’s not like it’s difficult for me.

Dave, just one question..
Don’t you think the karma gods came through for the Falcons? I mean, to go from the Michael Vick “man bites dog” saga to Matt Ryan, coupled with the Bobby Petrino “Hey I found another gig, gotta go, sorry” to Mike Smith..and all within a year..Don’t your fans feel like they’ve been through hell and are now getting to glimpse a little heaven?
by Benthere on Oct 21, 2009 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely
That was easily the worst year of my life as a fan in any sport, so it felt like a miraculous turnaround. Of course, you have to consider the Falcons’ history of total ineptitude up until now, too. Hell, we still haven’t had back-to-back winning seasons in 43 years….

And on a related note, how is your no-huddle offense looking?

Absolutely
He’s cooler than being cool. Our no-huddle offense is the scariest thing we run, because we have so many weapons and can move so effectively, but we use it sparingly. It might be time to roll into that more frequently.

A lot of people thought
you guys reached for Sam Baker in last year’s draft. How has he done at holding up so far? And what can we expect out of him against Ware and our other pass rushers?
by Mandmeisterx on Oct 22, 2009 7:42 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He's great
He lost much of his rookie year to an injury, but the performance of the offensive line noticeably dipped without him. I call him “T-Rex” because a lot of people were concerned that his arms were too short for an impact left tackle, but he’s done a great job protecting Matt Ryan’s blind side.

Do you think the Falcons will give him help or just allow him to man up with #94?

He'll man up unless it becomes an issue
Pretty much everyone on this team knows how to block, so he could get some help if it’s needed. I trust him against the pass rush, though.

How is Justin Blalock for you guys?
I remember as far back as middle school talking/hearing about him being a beast in high school and then at Texas.
by Joon on Oct 22, 2009 3:43 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He's improved immensely
Throughout his rookie season and part of his sophomore season, Blalock was a bit shaky in the pass protection and mental aspects of being an offensive lineman. Now I’d say he’s one of our better run-blockers and a guy who has performed very well for us this season.

What are the keys to the game?
What are a few things you see Dallas needing to do to win the game? (the formula for success if you will). I know the obvious answer is limit turnovers, stop the run, etc, but what are some factors that don’t get much press? I think the biggest factor is redzone play. Our offense has been really bad in the redzone, yours has been really good. Our defense is pretty good in the redzone though, but I believe yours is too. How does Ryan perform if he is playing from behind? The other big factor I believe is penalties. Both teams are pretty bad with them, Dallas especially, as they have killed drive after drive.
It's not cocky if it's a lie.

Just bludgeon us
Run the ball all day long, go for short passes on the sidelines and let your guys run with it, attempt to get pressure on Ryan and limit long plays. We really struggle when we’re forced to slow our game down. Obviously, your best bet is to keep us out of the red zone at all costs, because we’re averaging something like a 90% conversion rate once we get in there.

Our Running game
You may have adressed this and I apologize if you did, but what chance does Atlanta have to stop or minimize our running game? Seeing that your D-Line is undersized and very agressive and mobile, I believe some of our counters and draws can catch you guys in a vulnerable position. Also, the fact that we have a very oversized O-line going against your undersided D-line could help us pound the ball right at you. Since Dallas is leading the NFL in yards per carry (5.9), I feel the true key to this game is for us to run the football. By keeping ball out of Ryan’s hands and tiring your defense, we can dicate the game.
by ricky A on Oct 23, 2009 2:32 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Maybe but on the other hand
pass blocking may suffer. Dallas o-line has a lot of trouble with quicker, smaller pass rushers. Have to pass to keep the run going…

by dunkman on Oct 23, 2009 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well...
If your able to run the ball effectively, you control the tempo of the game and wear out the defense, which can lead to big plays later in the game. Dallas is 2nd in rushing yards per game and 1st yards per carry. Aslong as you can move the chains it doesn’t matter if it’s through the air or on the ground. In fact, if we have success early with the run it will force thier D to come in a bit and can open up the pass. The key is our O-lines ability to domintate thier D-line, which I believe we can. They are quicker but we are stronger, we line up in 2 TE formations and bring it to them over and over and wear down a physically smaller team. Not to mention, we have many passing options from our 2 TE formation, we need to get Bennett involved!!!!

I guess I'm thinking of
the Giants game. Ran all day, couldn’t pass, turned it over, lost the game. I realize aBout mistakes, but the defense can help force those.

That's going to be the key to this game
We’ll be able to stop you up the middle reasonably well, but on the outside we really could be in trouble. If you ground game goes wild, we’re probably screwed.

How confident are you that Ryan will still have a big passing day...
….Even if Turner struggles? Matt Ryan with all day to throw to Roddy White against T-New is frightening.
Similarly, as long as Romo doesn’t screw the pooch or eliminates turnovers altogether (but that means the Cowboys call a very conservative controlled passing game) are you concerned the Cowboys might run all over the Falcons?
by MadMick on Oct 23, 2009 4:36 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
it's not roddy white that scares me...
it’s anthony gonzalez! Newman has responded pretty well when asked to shadow one reciever. Now the falcons will no doubt try to get Mike Jenkins lined up on Roddy White, that could end up real bad for us. But I think the slow dagger that could end up bleeding us to death would be Gonzo over the middle extending drives.
by ricky A on Oct 23, 2009 5:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Is T-New really that good that he shut down Steve Smith?
Or was it more the fact that Jake Delhomme is ready to be shipped off to the glue factory? Look at how Brandon Marshall victimized T-New in the 59th minute. Newman, Jenkins; whoever. If Ryan has all day to throw, that spells doom.

Hopefully Wade will dial-up inside blitzes for Brooking all game long. In fact, I hope Wade brings at least 5 guys each down at Ryan.
Really put the Falcons OL to the test. Knowhatimean?
And if Ryan shreds us, so be it……otherwise, we shred him.

Considering Turner has struggled most of the year
And Ryan is still having a very good season, I’d say the chances are good. Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez just get open.
And see above. Definitely concerned that unless you guys implode, your running game is going to be a huge headache.

Thanks for your time this week, Dave
And for your insight on what I think should be a great game. I agree that our running game vs. your defense is the key to this game. If your defense can contain our running game a little and force Romo into a couple mistakes, we’re screwed.
I’m hoping our coaching staff gets away from the “Throw to set up the run” game plan. It worked two years ago, but doesn’t anymore. Tony G is my biggest concern on your team. Not sure what we have to slow him down.
