Cowboys Injury Update
Though not considered serious, a few more starters - Marion Barber (fractured thumb), DeMarcus Ware (stress fracture in foot), and Leonard Davis (fractured thumb) - will add new injuries to the team report.
Phillips said Ware had been experiencing foot pain for the last couple of weeks, and an MRI revealed the fracture.
"It's not a major injury," Phillips said. "It's something he can play with."
Barber thought he jammed his thumb against Kansas City two weeks ago, but an X-ray showed a fracture. Right guard Leonard Davis has the same injury, and both players will wear casts.
Also wearing casts will be strong safeties, Gerald Sensabaugh (thumb) and Mike Hamlin (arm). Sensabaugh is pushing to start against Atlanta, while it is not yet known whether or not Hamlin will be activated.
Roy Williams (ribs) , Andre Gurode (knee), and Flozell Adams (shoulder) are all still on the injured list, but have practiced this week and are expected to play Sunday.
Meanwhile, Felix Jones (knee) is not yet a lock to play against the Falcons.
"It's still there (pain in knee) a little bit, but if feels a lot better,'' Jones said after Wednesday's practice. "One day at a time is all I can do.''

Larry, Fox 40, 1:00pm on Sunday, Cowboys/Atlanta. Beautiful.

It's Barber's left thumb (non-carrying), by the way.
Just sounds like when the basketball rebounds off the rim straight into your finger.

Yep, it's reportedly still tight
Should be more of an issue on long runs than short ones.
Larry Allen benched 700 pounds. That is Leonard Davis times two.
Yeah, it's still listed in the report.

A jammed finger
Is a “sprain” really because you sprain the colateral ligaments on the sides of the phalange
Cowboys fan since 1978.. I was 3 years old
Needs to be able to switch hands though
the way he runs I wouldn’t be thrilled w/ a cast.
Sounds like a fumble waiting to happen.
Choice should get the majority of carries-and this ridiculous, 3 RB’s and 2 have already been hurt too much.

I'm more concerned
about catching the ball. If he can’t, that’s one less thing the offense can do when he’s in the game.

Whoa!! Where did that Ware foot fracture come from???
That’s seriously concerning to me! This is the first I’d heard of it, and foot fractures for big guy’s can become chronic and require surgery. Plus it’s unlikely to heal with him playing on it all the time. Damn. Hope this doesn’t become an issue, but Wade’s dismissal seems a bit casual to me.

Heard on the radio here in DFW
that it occurred in the Chiefs game (don’t know what quarter) and that he was able to play the rest of the game.

Ware had two sacks against the Chefs. None until then. Maybe the injury is a good thing? Kidding.

Ware looks a step slow to me -
and not as powerful as last year…something is not right, he seems to be giving 150% but something is definitely missing.

I think part of it......
is offensive lines may be blocking differently because they are not afraid of Spencer. I don’t have any facts on this just my observations. Look at it. Ratliff is doing awesome. You would think that if Ware is getting all the attention, then Spencer should be getting some sacks-which he is not getting. I think that since they are not afraid of Spencer, this allows them to key on Ware since Ellis isn’t in there.
If Ware was always getting doubled, I would agree
however, there have been many times where Ware has just failed to beat his guy straight up. I know, it’s a mystery because we all know what he’s capable of, kind of like Romo being inaccurate this season…very mystifying.

Yeah, something is up with Ware
He had that neck injury in the first game. I know he came back in that game, but neck injuries can linger. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Pure speculation on my part

I'm actually quite concerned also
Although coming off the bye week alleviates my fears to a degree.
The potential of Ware’s fracture becoming a nagging issue bothers me because he’s such an important player on defense despite having a miserable season by his standards.

Naaa ..
just thinking outloud.
I thought the Giants blocked him well, and game planned to get the ball out quick, but imo he hasn’t looked comfortable against Denver and KC.

Yeah
I’ve actually seen him quit on plays this year, which I’d never seen before. I hope that can be attributed to injury.

So no excuse for the earlier games.

I had a stress fracture in my foot years ago
It was painful as hell and took forever to heal. Depending on when this injury occurred, it may explain D-Ware’s slow start this year

I'm pretty sure
some of our players are made of paper mache.
I dot like the idea of rushing players back
But thinking of a Pat Watkins / Tony Gonzalez matchup makes me want to cut Sensi’s cast off immediately. I fail to understand why opposing teams don’t throw at Watkins eery time.

Yeah...Watkins has been consistently terrible
If Sensi is breathing, he’s a better option. Gonzo’s arguably the best TE in football(or at least tied with Witten). If Watkins were to be assigned with the task of covering him, our chances of winning would be awfully slim.

TIED W WITTEN?!?!?
Seriously Gonzo is top 5 for sure, top 3 2 yrs ago, but witten has been THE best TE the past 3 years of football, HANDS DOWN.

but his stats are lagging this year (Witten)

Stats aren't everything
Have you been paying attention as to how dominant Witten has been run-blocking? He’s destroying linebackers.
I agree
but he didn’t make it to past Pro Bowls on blocking. And I’m sure every defensive coordinator would just love for Dallas to keep Witten blocking more and in the pass pattern less.
Besides, some stats are everything; the final score is a stat; and number of wins and losses is a stat.

You don't go to the Pro Bowl if you're an average or poor player
Sometimes late in his career, some guy gets in on reputation, but most guys earn their spot.

sure
I don’t think I ever said or thought that Romo didn’t deserve those pro bowls
Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character. - John Wooden
If I were a DC, I'd be much more concerned with Gonzo in the passing game
Witten is definitely a better blocker, no denying that. Witten’s also a great receiving threat, but he’s not Gonzo. The guy is a freak.
I wouldn’t trade Witten for anybody on any roster, and that includes Gonzo. I think they’re tied. Both have things going for them the other player doesn’t.

I think Witten is closer to Gonzo as a receiver
than Gonzo is to Witten as a blocker, IMO, which makes him the better TE, just more complete overall.
Actually, if I was to rate complete TEs in the league, Gonzo would finish 3rd behind both Witten and Heath Miller.

Injuries seem to be more of a problem this year than ever before.....
And guys are using them as excuses not to play well.. What’s next? Romo’s thumb is still bothering him, so that’s why he is playing terrible this year? Come on… Great players get over injuries and play through pain.
And
he’s not terrible this year. He’s had ups and downs but man, watch Campbell for a Sunday and see what terrible is…

I know this. No matter how bad the Skins are, and no matter how good the Cowboys are. At kickoff, it don;t
matter at all. The Skins have beated very good Dallas teams, with some of their worst teams. The Skins always scare me no matter their WL record.

and that is why I still think that Cowboys v. Redkins is the best rivalry in the NFL
Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
that's why I don't count this year's game........
as an automatic win because we all know that with this great rivalry anything’s possible even if you are having a crappy season like the Redskins. I would not be surprised in the least if they beat us this year. I’m not being disloyal but we have seen it before right?
I would be surprised, they are as bad as any team at this point
I don’t see that changing any time soon.

right, but these two teams have a habit of rising when they play each other

Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
Agreed........
and if my memory serves me correctly, in Landry’s last season, we beat them too when we were a terrible team. For those that think there’s an easy win, think of the Raiders-Philly last week. As John Madden just said on Sirius, the Eagles didn’t come to play last week and Antonio Pierce fired up the Raiders with his classless comments. BTW, Madden also said that the only way Cowboys win this game(Atlanta) is if Romo doesn’t have to play from behind. He said that if you can get up on the Cowboys, that’s when Romo will force throws etc. and usually make a bone-headed play. It’s sad that so many media types like Madden now think that about Romo. I happen to agree with Madden btw.
well from what I heard today........
he doesn’t think that Romo plays very well when the Cowboys play from behind. Off of this years games if we are down, Romo has a tendency to throw it up and force things according to Madden. He was saying that we need to jump out to a lead for Romo to calm down and not force things.
Romo hasn't forced anything since the GMen game
and I’ll be surprised if he does so in this game as well.

Great players get over injuries and play through pain.
Perhaps, but not when said pain actually detracts from your performance and hurts the team in the process. If a fractured thumb causes fumbles for Marion Barber, for example, should he still fight through the pain and continue coughing up the ball? Injuries shouldn’t be an excuse for inconsistent play and failure to execute, but a player needs to know his limits and ask himself, “Am I helping the team win with my presence, or am I sabotaging the team by playing through a debilitating injury and being stubborn about not being subbed off?”
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
The whole "excuse" thing is overblown by fans
an excuse is a pretext to justify something happening or not happening. Injuries that prevent proper execution of a play are a “reason”. The difference between players is generally so small that even a minor injury can reduce performance enough to be noticeable. But if a football player tries to explain what happened, they are accused of making excuses. it’s all part of the hyper-macho stuff fans (and the media) seem to have written into a code of conduct for what players can get away with saying. I heard people talking about Favre;s torn bicep as an excuse last season for the poor five game stretch at the end of the season. Ludicrous.

Agreed. Admitting to an injury has always been seen as an egregious sin in sports, which is ridiculous considering physical health (or lack thereof) is one of the biggest indicators of maximal performance of a person.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
And I wonder
how often does it contribute to players trying to come back too early from injury…

Sensi must play!
It’s not like Watkins is going to get a pick anyway…besides the INT, is playing with a hand cast all that problematic?
Also, does anyone know if Crayton had been moving into the slot on 3 WR sets this year? If so, then please stop the “this will be better for Crayton too” talk. It’s not like you’re the number 2 receiver that you ALWAYS have to line up outside…
Pretty sure they move the WRs around in different packages
but I don’t have Tivo or anything of the sort…so I’m not 100% on that. You do have to wonder how the cast will affect his pass breakup/INT skills….still better than Watkins.

Anyone else cringe when Wade gives his medical updates?
“It’s not a major injury,” Phillips said. “It’s something he can play with.”..Kind of like watching Barber do the one legged bunny-hop after 10 yards because he “has a little tightness in his quad”? Now I’m hoping I don’t see Ware do a free scooter or power chair commercial.
Where
is the fracture located in Ware’s foot?? Damn, I just saw this news flash across the screen on ESPN and almost came out of my chair. Very worried about this news. Hopefully, more news on this soon.
Ware
I don’t consider any fractures in the foot to be minor. Especially for a guy who utilizes his speed to get QB pressure. It could lead to an even worse injury from compensating for the bad wheel. I appreciate Dr Wade’s low key approach on injury reports, but I don’t think this one is nearly as harmless as he makes it sound.
3-2 headed for the bye week.
Awesome and true rant from DCFanatic
here. I have never heard of a team that handles injuries worse than this one – from MB3 hobbling along on 1 leg, to players not getting checked out as soon as they have a problem, to players re-injuring themselves because they are allowed to come back to soon. One more reason to fire Wade. But, please, throw the entire training staff out with him.
We haven't handled injuries well for a while
Felix’ season was thrown out the window last year over poor judgement. Romo never seemed right after the PINKY. I remember seeing him out there trying to throw 3 days after the pinky break. If he wasn’t kidding me, he wasn’t kidding anyone.
This goes waaaay back. According to Parcells, no one was ever injured. It was the same training staff then. The coaches are most likely getting poor advice. Kind of reminds me of the $h!t going on in Any Given Sunday. Desperate coaches, trainers taking orders from the owner in closed door meetings. Players bargaining for playing time when they should be resting injuries. I don’t want to summarize what all this means.
I thought we were supposed to heal during the bye.
Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, "where the heck is the ceiling?"
