Draft Notes

Scott Wright of NFLDC and Don Banks of SI discuss the effect of the collective bargaining agreement (or lack thereof) on the draft and the possible influx of juniors.

Star-divide

Even without a particularly huge influx  juniors, just glancing over SI's top 50 prospects (seniors and juniors) this figures to be a deep draft especially if you are in the market for a DL or tackle (and Miami's Jason Fox is not even mentioned).  There also seems to be some talent at QB that should be evenly spread thoroughout the first 3 rounds.  With such a deep draft it would be a good year to win the Superbowl.

Speaking of tackles Cowboys scouts are one of two teams to travel north to a division III school to look at this small school OT prospect.

Two other underrated OT prospects.

Bradford opts for surgery and plans to get ready for the draft.

Early this month playmaking junior WR Dez Bryant was declared ineligible and is likely to enter the draft because of some unfortunate meddling by former Cowboy Deion Sanders. (Edit: poster below points out that Deion would not have known any better)

Nice post - Great info

Am I alone in thinking I would be really happy if this draft was rather unsexy?

I think we are getting pretty close to where we’d like to be with the “playmakers”, and it’s time to add more depth and solidify some of our weak spots. I’d love an OT, DL, S, and/or CB in the first couple rounds.

The question becomes; if we’re on the clock, and guys like Berry and Mays are there, do we jump?

You don't want that...

It’s gonna take a REALLY bad season to be in a position to draft Berry or Mays… especially Berry.

guy

I think u hit our needs on point with a OT,DL,S ,CB bul i would like to add a LB i think we can find them all in this draft.

u have to think with the guys we got on the depth chart plus a a possible OL pick, who is going to get re shuffle. Second we got to look at a quality corner bc Tnew want be there 4ever. Third or fourth a safety possible although i think Ball has found his thing and Ken i just don’t kno anymore. But u never kno they might target a wideout but hey JJ got his ways

I hope Jerry doesn't get cute...

and just takes the best player on the board.

I don't need a weatherman to knows what way the wind blows.

Yea like in 2008

that was a real extreme quality draft, just about everyone we drafted can start 4 us or on another team (except Eric Walden , who i have no ideal where he is at)

Its not Deion's fault.

Bryant lied about a innocent meeting. I don’t think its against the rules to talk to Deion.

Dear Jerry,

Please find a way to get Eric Berry or Taylor Mays.

Give me Berry...

I like Mays, but Berry is a better playmaker and only a marginally worse athlete.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

never going to happen

if we keep on playing like we did yesterday or even if we play a little worse.

Draft...

This year has got to be the year to finally draft some offensive lineman. Guys like Proctor and McQ have had their chance and don’t seem to be capable of good offensive line play. Much in the same way we targeted LB and special teams last year, we need to focus on the trenches this year. I would love to see a few offensive lineman, a NT and/or a DE, as well as drafting a guy that can be a legit threat on punt and kick returns (Jacoby Ford comes to mind).

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Don't forget that Brewster is coming off PUP this week

Mardy gilyard and Jordan Shipley would also be a good PR/WR pick

either Shipley or Gilyard would be great

True about Brewster...

Although I still think there need to be at least two new offensive lineman brought in to compete. As for Shipley and Gilyard, I like both of them, but I just think Ford would be ideal due to the fact that he could add track speed (as in an almost 10 second 100m time) to our offense and inject that same speed into the return game. Plus, he isn’t a guy that has failed to produce and just been talked about because of his speed. I was at the GT-Clemson game this year and the guy has some good ball skills. Plain and simple speed kills, and Ford has as much of it as anyone in the NCAA (with the exception of maybe Jeff Demps and Holliday from LSU).

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Shipley

Is just another possession receiver. If he’s available after the 4th round, then maybe.

+1 I'm with ya on that

I especially agree with NT and OTs. We should have a third NT because Siavii is 31 and we could use a big body to begin learning the position. I’d love to have the benefit of switching NTs and causing fits for offensive lines between a stud in Rat and a monster similar to a motivated Shaun Rogers or the like. Flozell is in the same boat but we have Brewster and McQuistan so I don’t know how sure were are that they are or will be ready here what seems like shortly.

A few guys I'd love to see come to Dallas (but probably won't)

Dez Bryant-To replace Roy and line up across from Miles Austin.

Trent Williams-OT-Oklahoma-To inject some youth into the aging O-Line

Rolando McClain-ILB-Alabama-Great tackler, maybe could serve a 1 yr apprenticeship under Brooking and start next to Bradie James in the future.

Joe Haden-CB-Florida-A better prospect than Jenkins/Scandrick.

Who are we most likely to get-I’ll say USC OT-Charles Brown

He's certainly mobile, but he lacks power...

Ryan has a fast release, that helps his OLine to look good.

It’s just that Winston Justice and Jacob Rogers come to mind inmediatelly after thinking USC Tackles… Justice is turning the page and he’s becoming decent at RT, but it took him a bunch of time.

I would really like McClain to be that next in line because he is a beast

but I think Jason Williams is the guy they are grooming for that position (and he definitely has the physical skills).

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Oct 26, 2009 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd love to get Suh ( I know, he's a top 5 pick)

He’s the most impressive defensive player I’ve seen this year, and he would be absolutely dominating playing next to Rat next season.

Are you ready for some football???

by APerfectStar on Oct 27, 2009 3:40 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

That would be very tight...

But if I could have one defensive player it would be Eric Berry. I think Berry is the next Ed Reed.

On offense, if I could have one player I suppose I would take Russell Okung or Trent Williams to anchor our line down the road. At the same time though, a guy like Dez Bryant would be mighty tempting to help our return game and receiving corp.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

Some Guys I Like...

Damian Williams USC WR
Terrence Cody Alabama NT
Bryan Bulaga Iowa OT
Mardy Gilyard Cincy WR

Walter Thurmond III, CB from Oregon

He’s an awesome DB—most thought better than Jarius Byrd. But, he’s been hurt two years in a row. Would be a nice high risk/high reward pick for later in the draft.

I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles...
