[UPDATE: Jay Glazer tweets "i'm reporting dallas and d ware have agreed on new 6 yr deal worth up to 13 per yr and nearly 40mil guaranteed. well worth it!" END UPDATE]
The Cowboys have scheduled a 4 P.M. press conference to announce an extended contract agreement with DeMarcus Ware.
From Nick Eatman:
The Cowboys are expected to announce the signing of DeMarcus Ware to a long-term contract, possibly making him the highest-paid defensive player in football.
Ware has come on strong here in the last two games, recording four sacks after a slow start saw him with no sacks in four games. Ware led the NFL with 20.0 sacks last year, becoming just the sixth player in league history to register 20.

Congratulations
Hope you get your well deserved reward…..
You are a key to our success, and a role model for others
But Ware never missing any time.
Durability should also be factored in.

Good for him
His past play earned him the spot as the highest payed defensive player. Now let’s hope he doesn’t copy Hamlin, Roy, TO, and all the other players we’ve extended.
Good for you Ware
Well deserved. I hope you’re a Cowboy for life!
Summarizing the Dallas Cowboys in two words; inconsistently amazing.
Not to sound greedy, but I was hoping they'd break the $100million barrier.
It’s just money.

Kinda glad they didn't...
If Miles keeps doing what’s he’s done the last couple weeks, Jerry’s going to have another big contract to pay out in the offseason…going to need at least a couple bucks to keep Austin in the fold ;)
Congrats to Ware! Glad to see this got done! No one deserves it more
Hmm...Austin:
Kevin Curtis money? 6 years, $32 million 2.5 years ago. Update for inflation or some such, 6 years, $36-38 million? Do you go more or less years? He turned 25 last June. I suppose it depends how he does the rest of the season after the defenses start accounting for him more…
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

Austin
Won’t see anything until after the season i would guess….it will all depend on how the rest of the year plays out for him…
If he keeps putting up multiple TD’s and a 150+ yards a game Jerry’s going to have to take out a 2nd on the death star to afford him lol
Sounds like the cowboys got a pretty good deal
when compared to your guess, I am surprised he didnt Haynesworth Money.
I am glad we got a “bargain” for Dware, it will help us sign others that may need an extension, cough cough MILES Mazzerati Austin.
Well deserved
For one of the most stand-up guys in the league, not to mention one of the most dominant.
Prediction: 6 years, 91 million.

How will our salary cap be lined up next year
Anyone have a clue? I know TOs big hit will come off the books, what will Newmans and Barbers cap hits look like? If we draft another corner or sign a good not over the hill corner, what will the ramifications be if Newman were to be cut.
I know Barber is a beast, but what would it cost us to trade him, given the price is right. I only have a Barber jersey right now, so I do like him, but I think it is very obvious that when the other 2 guys are in the game, they are much more effective. I had the choice of buying my daughter a Romo, or Barber Jersey. I chose Romo, cause I didnt think Barber would be here in the next 2 years. I am actively trying to get a Marty B. Jersey, so if anyone has some suggestions, they would be greatly apprecaited.
Maybe you didn't notice....
But he’s had an injury!
He’s was plowing through defenses earlier this season…and with his contract, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon….
I did notice
and I feel for the guy, but Choice, and Felix provide much better options when “running” the ball, now when it comes to pass protection, he is far and away the best of the 3.
Looking up Tnews contract says 6 yrs 50 mil, 22 mile guaranteed, I just need to find out how much of that has been accounted for in the first 2 years.
Felix...
Unfortunately seems to get injured if the defense even looks at him funny….
Why is everyone so quick to try to trade proven players? Keep the 3 headed monster intact as long as possible!
Newman’s not going anywhere soon either…and for all the bashing he’s been taking here…remind me again who took Steve Smith out of the Carolina game?
i think Delhomme should be given some credit for that....
smith has 27 catches for 358yds and 0TDs in 6 games….Newman only played in one of those games
Newman
Has proven he can take Smith out of the game repeatedly, so I’ll give him the credit.
You do have a valid point about Delhomme though….
For as up in arms as some people here have been over Romo…can you imagine how bad it would be with Delhomme? lol
I think because
when it comes to production, choice has quite a bit more burst, and when you have an abundance of talent at one position, you try to give up some so you can improve in another area. Yes, Felix gets hurt way too easy, but you draft another back in the 4th-5th round and he is your 3rd back. Choice starts, and Felix is the change of pace back. The other guy affords some time to develope.
Newman on the other hand, give me a flippin break, he has terrible balls skills, terrible hands, for every good game he has had this year he has had 2-3 REEEEAALLY bad games. He constantly is our achillies in critical situations, IE manningham catching TD on him in the giants game, and Santonio Holmes in the Pitt game that we completely dominated prior to that.
Ummm.....
In this draft they need to find some O-line, and potentially someone to replace Spears (I believe his contract is up after the year and i don’t see him getting a big deal here) plus it looks like there might be the possibility they may need to hand Austin a big contract in the offseason. You can’t do that cutting guys with big $ contracts that hurt your cap…
Barber is a leader on this team, I don’t want him going anywhere…
Newman’s had a rough go in some games so far this year, but there’s a lot of football to go, I’m not giving up on him yet….he has been a very good player here for most of his career
I would rather keep Spears.
That shouldn’t cost too much and he’s a good player and a good guy.

I agree
Spears doesn’t get enough credit for his run-stopping and it would save us from having to draft a DE. This would allow us more flexibility in the draft and let us perhaps more effectively carpet-bomb some positions (seems to be our strategy of choice). The one caveat of course is if his contract number somehow ridiculously inflates. At that point, we would probably have to say good-bye.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

He just seems like a classy guy and a great fit for this team.
I’d be disappointed if we couldn’t re-sign him.

It would be nice
To keep Spears….he does a good job of doing what a 3-4 end should…keeping the LBers free to make plays.
But who saw Canty getting the deal NY threw at him? Hopefully its dealt with one way or another before draft time

Demarcus Ware
I like everything about this deal. We avoided going into the 100 million dollar club, we locked up one of the best Cowboys in recent memory, and the money couldn’t go to a better role model.
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
Keep in mind though...
Haynesworth isn’t going to see anywhere near a $100 million…the salaries in the last year or 2 of that deal are off the map….
True...
I still think though that I prefer the more traditional style of writing up a contract (one you can actually keep) rather than insanely loading a deal on the back-end to hit some cool contract number.

Miles
Isn’t going anywhere for now…let’s see how he does when D’s start keying on him a bit before breaking out the checkbook.
I think he’s going to continue to be good…but since there’s no rush, it doesn’t hurt to make sure before getting tied up with another big contract.
But damn! 421 yards, 4 TD’s in 2 games…..
Come to think of it....
By the end of the year if Miles keeps this up…me thinks Jerry might regret the truckload of money he handed RW
Flipping unreal isn't it?
Remember all the arguments before the season on who would replace TO’s production? Well Miles has 21 catches for 502 yards & 5 TD’s and a 23.9 ypc…
I think I have an idea…lol
23.9???? WTF Miles?
he has 5 already....
If he remains the starter I dont see how he doesnt get at least another 5 in the remaining 10 games.
His is now second on the team in receptions with 21.
And with 502 yards, we may have ourselves a new 1000yard WR boys!

I wish somebody would explain how the cap really works
I understand the basics. There’s a certain amount of $$$ that can be paid in salaries per year….but how much of those huge contracts really count against each year ius a kstery to me. How about the signing bonus? What happens when you cut a player?
I know that bonus money are spread evenly over the lenght of a contract, but
if you cut a player before the end of a contract, those bonus money accelerate and hit you all together at once.
I think...
And someone please correct me if I’m wrong…
The players salary automatically counts against the cap, the signing bonus is divided capwise over by the number of years of the contract. $36 mil signing bonus/6 years=$6mil a year
If you cut a player, whatever amount of their signing bonus hasn’t been accounted for yet all hits the year they are cut.
At least that’s my understanding, there are some guys here who are much better at the cap stuff than I am though
off topic, but is ESPNDallas just sucking out local writers as
giving them forum to write on espn page? anyone knows whats the deal?
No idea...but I saw a creepy exchange on First & 10 today
Everyone but Skippy Brainless was jumping on the “Falcons must not be that good since Dallas beat em” bandwagon…Skippy was actually defending the ’Boys and saying it was a big win and a step in the right direction…
Cue Twilight Zone theme song…lol
Skippy is a idiot
he’s proven that for years, but he’s right this time
Tom Landry=the best football man ever.
Hasnt skip been doing this all year??
I have had only a handful of chances to watch first and ten, and the few times this year Skip has been on the cowboys bandwagon, trying to stir. It seems he has been this way since we let TO go.
I think generally speaking
That if it were a 6yr 36 mil deal with 12 gauranteed. It would look something like this.
4 mil first year
5 mil second year
3 mil 3rd year
(Covered gauranteed money)
Now you have 24 mil left over for the last 3 years
If you were to cut this player at this point, there would be no penalty, as far as a I know.
7 mil 4th year
7 mil 5th year
10 mil 6th year.
This is why many teams try to negotiate extensions before that last year hits, to lower the cap hit, if they want to keep the player.

The deal must have been agreed upon before the game.
I told get his deal done and his level of play would go back to last years level.
KICK ASS every day!!!

you guys can thank me
For matt Ryans bad game, I sent him a pic of my profile pic, This is the prime reason he was scared. lol
and whoever hit Romo on the head, at the end of that 17 yards scramble,
he was almost flawless after that passer rating of ~140?
lol
He was funny in his presser after the game. they asked about it and he said he didn’t remember it. But I do think it woke up the offense.
did he really not remember it? If true, that is a concern.
Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
Why is that funny?
If the hit caused short term memory loss, that is a cause for concern. I did not see the press conference so I don’t know if he was kidding, which is why I asked the question.
Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
Yeah but Romo was good before the hit
