Gamechanger: Austin in 09 is like Romo in 06...
Remember where our team was headed before Tony got rolling vs. Carolina in 2006? Remember where our team was headed before Austin got rolling in Kansas City in 2009? The parallels are eerie, and there are reasons for optimism that the success will be sustained.
1) Just as Romo changed the team’s fortunes by dramatically upgrading a key position in early ’06, Austin might well do the same in ’09.
Our Wide Receiver corps (pre-Austin breakout) reminds me a lot of our QB play with Bledsoe. It was OK in some games, but never playoff caliber, and had weaknesses (lack of explosiveness) that were magnified by top competition. Remember the pre-heart throb Romo in ’06? His girlfriend had just broken up with him, and he was just a goofy kid with a huge “aw shucks” grin…kind of like Austin’s grin after every play now. Both were un-drafted free agents with a few years in the league, both had shown flashed of promise meriting a slight pay raise in the offseason, both were (initially) Parcells favorites, and both broke out right as the team was headed for a 7-9 season. You watch: Austin is a handsome guy with bad teeth. If he goes to the Pro Bowl, he’ll get his teeth fixed and start dating actresses.
2) Wide Receivers who Break Out in their 4th year and stay good are quite common.
Look at the career arcs of great receivers in our era, and there’s a similar pattern: the first “breakout year” is either Year 4 or Age 25. Part of the reason Jerry doesn’t like drafting WR’s high is because, unlike RB’s, they usually don’t star until their 4th year. Marvin Harrison didn’t have his first 1,000 yard season until year 4. Same for Michael Irvin and Reggie Wayne. T.O. broke out in Year 3, when he was 25. Rod Smith and Donald Driver, the two small school guys to whom we might compare Austin, also didn’t break out until their fourth year. Other than the true super-freaks (Moss, Galloway, Glenn, DeSean Jackson) who can “out athlete” even NFL corners, it takes about 3-4 years for athleticism and skill to come together for NFL wide outs.
3) Austin has the rare ability to make plays even when “covered.”
Austin’s TD against Tampa and his 2nd TD this week were on back shoulder throws where Austin wasn’t wide open. Tony’s confidence to make those throws is something he has with only one other receiving target (Witten). If you watch the slow motion replays of some of his catches, Austin is excelling at the hand fighting and subtle body movements that happen at the top of routes. Then, he’s not only making the catch, he’s immediately able to make a “football move” and get up field. In playoff football, and against higher level defenses, receivers will rarely get huge separation. That’s why TO (who relied on getting big separation to compensate for so-so ball skills) mostly underperformed in his career in playoff football, and guys like Irvin and Fitzgerald were their same bad selves. Not that Austin is in the Irvin-Fitz category, and he’ll likely never be as good as TO at his peak, but he has qualities that augur well for when he faces elite defenses.
4) Austin runs the 10 yard dash incredibly quickly and powerfully.
I don’t know what Austin’s 40 time would be these days, but what he does in the first few steps after the catch demonstrates why 40 times don’t tell the full truth about a receiver’s big play abilities. Some receivers (TO, Rice) come out of their breaks so quickly that they always seem to slip the first tackle. It seems like every time Austin catches the ball, he’s slipping out of a tackle. That’s not a coincidence, it’s a rare ability, and Austin seems to have it.

Very good points all around...
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

very good post
Jerry is smart for not drafting WRs high, they do take a lot of time to develop and with most players it takes 3 or 4 years to “get it”.
Austin is really a tremendous athlete who finally figured out how to become a professional NFL WR and I expect defenses to soon start playing him the way they did T.O., double coverage with a safety over the top all the time.
Once that happens, Witten and RW should have all kinds of space and room to terrorize defenses underneath all day long.

Great point
When that happens we need to understand what is going on and not freak out when he only has 3 or 4 catches for 60 yards. If he is able to draw coverage from Witten and RoyDub, we should still see an effective offense.

Austin will cool off eventually
Especially when teams start to game plan for him, but he still should end up with the kind of numbers T.O. produced each year he was here at the very least.

1200 yards per season
= 75 yards per game.
That’s not too much to ask, is it?

I'm pretty sure he'll get 1,200 to 1,300 yards this season

I'de say hes off to a fantastic start
If that’s the measure of success this year.

He has almost half a thousand in 2 games
421, to be exact. at this rate, he’s one game shy of the 500 mark.
In two games. WOW.

double Austin...
once the DB start to double Austin, they are going to play a lot of catch 28 in the secondary…

Excellent post
And I will not panic during games when he has 3 or 4 catches.

Great post...
It’s obvious what he brings to the actual game but I also give him as much credit for his attitude between games.
He seems to get it…..always mentions team first.

great post
- we’ve all been saying, he has an uncanny quickness once the balls in his hands, very TO like.
- we’re all hoping lol. I’m trying to stay reserved as possible with austin, but hes always shown the potential and had an incredible two games, theres a lot to be excited about. To be fair, he hasn’t faced good corners, nothing along the lines this division will throw at him, but the signs right now are very positive.
If we managed to get a top flight qb and wr as undrafted free agents….wow.

I agree on the quality of CBs he has yet to face
But if Tony continues to put the ball where Austin has a chance at it, I think Austin will hold his own.

If Tony continues to put the ball where hes been putting it the last two games
we’re going to win a playoff game this year at minimum. The guy has been sick.

Good thing about Austins long TDs
Is most came on a deep out and then breaking tackles. A man over the top may make the tackle but he shouldnt stop the completion.
I remember reading someones camp post that Austin was the only WR that was giving a nice cushion. They all feared his speed and that includes Ogletree.

I wonder if Ogletree can contribute
With Austin being so dang good, wouldn’t it be fun to see what ’Tree is made of?

I agree with the "it takes a few years." I really love Ogletree and would like him to get some PT
before the year is up but He still has a way to go.

The delima is
It’s harder to take him to the game. Hurd is good on ST. Austin can return kicks. Ogletree just hasn’t made himself indispensable on ST yet. Give him another year to bulk up and work with Jurazik and he will be there next year.

My only memory of Austin in '06...
He fumbled either a kick or punt return and lost it. Bill Parcells glared at him with deathly eyes that day.

I'd say Ogie is much further along than Austin was at the same point his rookie yr
But it’s just tough to get him worked into the line up if he doesn’t play well on ST. I don’t think he’ll see much time this season. It’s nice to have another young potential contributor at WR in waiting, though.

Nice write up!
Like the comparison.
Love to see Ogletree as well….

It's an interesting point about 40 times lying.
I’ve also thought that big guys like Austin, younger TO, etc. are faster than their timed speeds due to the pads, as well. When they run 40s, they do it without pads. So if one guy is bigger and stronger, his time and explosiveness will decrease less when carrying 15 pounds of pads and their bulk.

Austin actually had pretty impressive combine stats
by quincyyyyy on Oct 28, 2009 3:19 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I remember a lot of draft experts
had him rated pretty high in that draft, actually many had him with a second rd grade and I was actually surprised he wasn’t drafted, but considering he is from a division 1-AA school like Romo, it’s understandable.
I was really happy when we signed him as an undrafted FA.

Here's a nice presentation on how he got ready for the combine
Others have posted this before, but it’s always impressive.

I'm not sure if it was "stolen"...
A) I’m not sure my idea in the post is all that original. Now, if he does a piece about how Jerry Jones and George Steinbrenner’s tenures eerily resemble on another, I’ll be suspicious…
B) Even if he got the idea from here, this isn’t exactly a medium that requires the academic rules of citation. In fact, I HOPE the mainstream media types visit sites like this and do features that explore some of the better posts.
