Ask a Seahawks Fan

I did this Q&A last year when the Cowboys were good and the Seahawks were bad and injured. Now the Cowboys are good and the Seahawks are bad and injured. In the end I'm taking questions from BTB readers about this weekend's game. I don't claim to be an expert or anything, but I do my best. I'm not feeling too well today so I'll probably get to your questions Thursday-Saturday. Before you continue I should clear some things first:

1.) Julius Jones has been good for us. Don't be fooled by JJ's numbers. Seattle is either so far ahead that running with Jones is useless so they pick Edgerrin James or Justin Forsett for garbage duty, or so far behind that they abandon the run. In close action he ran for nearly 100 yards against the Bears and broked a big screen play for a TD. My only problem with him is that he has a SLOW first fear.

2.) Tony Romo had maybe the best game of his career last week. I quit on Romo after the Denver game and I still think the jury is out on him. But he was great on Sunday.

Star-divide

Should be a fun game, but with Dick Stockton and Charles Davis announcing, we're going to have the mute buttons working OT.

Frankly I think we'll get wiped out like last year

But this is a weird football season.

if the seahawks get some quality LT play the cowboys could have alot to worry about

that said, it is not likely due to injuries but by no means do i think this game is a lock. truth is that it feels like a trap game. the seahawks are underachieving and this could be the game where they bust out a little. for my teams sake lets hope

DeMarcus Ware

Given that Seattle is on it’s 5 LT this year, what do you expect Jim Mora to come up with in order to stop D Ware? What did they do to try to stop Dwight Freeney?

by rhbgsherb on Oct 28, 2009 8:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We started Brandon Frye at LT that day

Nothing worked. Frye was schooled. But that’s expected.

I expect Mora to run into a cave and hide in fear of the violent things Ware could do to Hasselbeck. McIntosh is in for a long day I bet. What’s amazing is up until last game against Arizona our 5th rate offensive line was performing amicably.

Tru is playing but Mora apparently has him on 3rd downs

Back injury is serious so I still don’t think he’s 100% if he’s getting limited action.

Beastly.

Very good pass-rushing QB and he has forced 2 fumbles already on Jay Cutler and David Garrard. When they bring the blitz Curry isn’t getting manhandled but more or less pwning any offensive lineman he sees.

He’s had some rookie jitters though. Took some bad angles against Frank Gore and the 49ers FB (name escapes me) and missed some open field tackles as a result. Some of those were crippling because those were 3rd down blown tackles. But since then he’s been very good for a rookie. Personally I think he’s a quick learner as well.

For example we allowed a 4th and goal TD to Chicago to an open Greg Olsen. The next home game against Jacksonville the Jags tried the same play and Aaron Curry saw it coming and played a big part in making sure the TE wasn’t open. Garrard threw it away and we got the ball back.

Obviously room for improvement but he’s got everyone excited.

We love him. A lot.

For a small guy (in terms of DEs) he is strong and he’s been getting to the QB consistently in his limited playing time. We have better pass-rushers right now in Darryl Tapp and the emerging Lawrence Jackson. But Reed is becoming a fan-favorite. He scored a TD on a long fumble return against the Jags and recorded a sack.

He has a lot of heart and puts in a lot of effort.

Using the mighty powers of Nick Reed

He will simultaneously play DB, LB, and DE all at the same time. He will hold Austin to zero catches, stuff your fearsome RB trio to -55 yards, and intercept Tony Romo 15 times and record 13 sacks.

Other than that I think Austin will torch Kelly Jennings and edge out Josh Wilson in 1-on-1. I want to see our safeties converge on him the moment the ball is thrown.

Oh stop it...

What he means is that the consensus of the NFL world (aka those not on BTB) don’t think Romo has performed consistently well enough, especially in late season games, to warrant the praise that Cowboys fans generally think he deserves because of his stats.

Frankly, it’s Romo’s job to end that debate through higher performance in December and January.

There I was in the middle of responding

And you said what I pretty much wanted to say.

And QB rating being the measurement of a great QB is bunk. Dan Fouts and Dan Marino are in the 80s range. Troy Aikman had 81.6. John Elway is 79.9. I could have a field day with this.

But I think he WILL get you back on his bandwagon, given time

So here is my question:

What are your thoughts about Holmgren as a potential coach for Dallas next year?

Dallas is winning in spite of Wade

I love Holmgren but his clock management skills took a dive in recent years and his playcalling became woeful.

If he does take the job I see him calling the plays full-time. In recent years he’s pretty much given up on any play bigger than 3rd and 13. He chooses instead to call the useless FB Draw. I also believe he will have a much higher tendency to abandon the run in favor of the pass at any given time.

With all of that said he’s an upgrade over Wade and Garrett. I would be a little bit surprised however if he were to choose Dallas as his next coaching spot considering the potential power struggles (he’s big on being in charge).

So could we all

but individual stats are a better measurement of individual performance than team stats are of an individual. I have no doubt, for example, that Romo and Hasselbeck are better QBs than Eli. None at all. Eli is a steady QB who played on a team with an awesome defense.

Romo earned his stats, he didn’t get them on E-bay. Of course, as 5Blings points out, the rest of the planet won’t give him any credit until he wins big, but that is about what people say, not about how he plays.

Well back then being in the 80's was considered good

In today’s high powered passing offenses things are a little different. So you are comparing apples to oranges. Comparing QB’s of the last decade you will rarely find a QB.

Furthermore your logic is a non sequitur. You are saying QB’s with bad ratings can be good. That is not the argument he is making. He is saying QB’s with good ratings are necessarily good. Thus a good QB rating is sufficient but not necessary to being a good QB.

by quincyyyyy on Oct 30, 2009 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not true SSreporters

QB rating calculates the 4 most important stats of a qb, completion %, yards per attempt, TD and INT %.

If a qb excels in these 4 areas, he is a good qb, end of story.

He probably does it for the same reason you love to challenge Terry's viewpoints...

And since when is Tony “Terry’s boy?” Maybe I missed something, but I somehow thought this was a Cowboys blog. I understand being objective and trying to not get too “homerish”, but to speak in a condescending tone towards Terry because he defends Tony all the time (especially when it is clear that Tony is pretty deserving of a strong fan base) is ridiculous considering we should all at the very least support Tony fully on Sunday. I am not saying you have to have his jersey or love the guy, but it is statements like “Terry’s boy” that puzzle me since it isn’t like there is another viable QB option for this team.

Tony ROmo has been Terry's boy for almost as long as I have been coming here

There is no stauncher defender of Romo, either here or probably anyplace on the internet, than Terry. Calling Romo “Terry’s Boy” is an attempt at being humorous, which apparently failed, and also to rib Terry. Despite what Terry thinks, I am a ROmo fan as well and certainly not a “hater.” After Tony’s first thanksgiving day game when he threw for about 97 touchdowns, I decided to name my dog Romo, and I have been a supporter of the guy. I just get frustrated by his crappy play, though admittedly that seems to be on the wane.

My point was that SSreporters was a guest here, and Terry jumped on him because he did not agree with Terry’s assessment of Romo. The guy was here to discuss the Seahawks, and not to get into an argument about the merits of Tony Romo.

Well clearly I misinterpreted your tone as more condescending than you meant for to be.

And I wasn’t trying to question your allegiance or anything silly like that, but I guess from my perspective it is hard to see how some people can be so critical of Romo when he is one of the main reasons we are a contender in this NFL. Like I said, I understand being objective to a degree, but when Romo puts up the numbers he does I guess I just have a disconnect when it comes to being so critical of him. And like I said, it didn’t help that I misinterpreted your tone since it sounded to me like you were ribbing Terry pretty hard for simply defending our star QB.

And regardless, the Seahawks guy gave his opinion on Tony so I have to think that is fair game for debate. I understand that Terry may have been dismissive in how he addressed the guy, but honestly I think the question is at least worth further questioning since he probably represents a large amount of NFL fans in the amount of time he has watched the Cowboys.

Questions

Do you expect Hasselbeck back to full speed for the game?

How is Houshmandzadeh doing for you? Is he the main threat in the passing game?

We saw JuJo for a few years in Dallas and issues had to do with “Running like a robot”. Is this still the case? For us he seemed to pick a hole that he was shooting for before the snap and always go to that spot regardless of what the defense was doing. He did do pretty well in pass protection though. Does this profile still describe his play in Seattle?

Where do you see opportunities for Seattle to attack the Cowboys both on offense and defense?

by Impatient on Oct 29, 2009 10:38 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll give it a shot. ;-)

1.) I really don’t think Hasselbeck is at full speed. Maybe the bye week helped.

2.) Housh is doing well as a possession receiver. He burned Rashean Mathis twice for touchdowns against the Jags. I’d like to see him more down the field instead of on bubble screens and slants. Then again a lot of that may just be Seneca Wallace’s 2.5 game stint of thinking that was all he was worth.

3.) He doesn’t run like a robot but he has the first gear of one. I like how he’s looking for ways to find multiple holes but his cutbacks are slow and that lack of a first gear prevents him from bigger running plays. Been decent in pass protection although he was a wreck trying to block (I think) Adrian Wilson on a safety blitz against the Cardinals. Still inconclusive on Julius. No healthy offensive line and not a consistent need to run has been bad for everyone.

4.) Seattle’s only hope of attacking on offense is the success of the running game. Greg Knapp offense’s sputter when the running game is shut down. On defense I see the d-lineman getting to Romo, and of course LBs on a blitz. It’s up to them to see if they’re interested in tackling. Watch out for Darryl Tapp in the pass rush and Brandon Mebane in run support. Cory Redding has also been serviceable on both ends.

by sublimezg on Oct 29, 2009 6:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I really think Housh is still the #1 WR

West Coast Offense likes to spread the ball around. Burleson, Carlson (our TE), and Housh are our “Big 3” per se in regards to receiving.

Burleson is more of a “moderate-to-big gain” man and has been our consistent man for YAC. Housh is a possession receiver who is capable of making a big play, and he has done it several times before for us this season.

Don’t expect to get beat on the deep pass though. Hasselbeck has a horrible deep throw.

Are there any X-factors in this game?

As in: Do you have any dangerous return men? Can you force turnovers? etc. Or will this come down to if Dallas plays a solid game they will win with no troubles. I’m leaning that way, but haven’t really seen much of the Seahawks except scores. They seem really up and down and a bit unpredictable, but I’m not sure if the schedule played a part in that at all.

Our return game sucks and our return coverage is worse

One thing we’re extremely happy about is Olindo Mare. He’s leading the league in touchbacks with 9 and should make sure that our awful special teams coverage guys won’t be whiffing and blocking themselves out of a big return.

Forcing turnovers is something the Seahawks are getting around to. Not so much in the interception department but forcing fumbles. Cutler, Hill, Garrard, and Warner have had the ball stripped from them 6 times. Four of those have been recovered with 1 for a TD.

The only X-factor I can think of is Justin Forsett in the running game. He may suck at punt returns but he’s a sneaky guy and hard to bring down one-on-one.

You will probably have a few.

Seems like Buehler tries to hit from the goaline to about 2 yards deep to let the coverage team get to him before the 20. It’s worked a few times, and if your return game isn’t dangerous, I’m sure you’ll see it some more. Hopefully a lot if you catch my drift. I’m a little worried about our return game. I don’t feel good about putting Felix back there, especially this week. I don’t see anything good coming of it.
