Jay Ratliff injures knee in practice; questionable for Sunday's game.
From Nick Eatman:
After a seemingly injury-free week for the Cowboys, one of their best defensive players is now questionable to play Sunday.
Jay Ratliff, a Pro Bowl defensive tackle is having even a better season in 2009, sustained a knee injury in practice Thursday and did not practice on Friday. The Cowboys are still evaluating him and his status is uncertain for the game.

From Todd Archer:
Coach Wade Phillips said Ratliff had an MRI on Thursday that revealed the sprain.
It’s the right knee, btw.

You guys think we can afford to sit him this week? Or play him sparingly?
And rotate Siavii (or however you spell it) and Spears at the NT position…
Certainly, will make them look at their options.

That's my thought
they may also change formations up a bit too. I trust Wade’s defensive instincts, but man, Rat has been the team’s best defender this season.

It is kind
of nice to have both of them locked up long term. If Jenkins keeps playing at his current level the Cowboys D could really have something special.

exactly how i felt when i just opened this up after a day with no internet
Coach Winters: Mississippi State's offensive set. 2nd & 2 on our own 24, what defensive set might we call?
Alvin Mack: Eagle Zipper Hero, unless the setback shifts into the I.
Coach Winters: Good..[clicks to next slide], third and seven?
Alvin Mack: Oakie Thunder Lion. {What's your assignment?}
Alvin Mack: Kill the quarterback. {{Coach Winters clicks to next slide}}
Alvin Mack: Hit the tight end so hard his girlfriend dies. {{Coach Winters clicks to next slide}}
Alvin Mack: Kill everybody.
Pretty much sums up my feeling
Are you ready for some football???

this is what I was afraid of...........
one of our best defensive players like Ratliff or Ware going down and we have very shallow depth behind them. Siavi’s okay but only as a breather.
I wonder why we didn't hear about this yesterday.

Julius just gained additional carries...
Without Rat we can see a lot of runs….I am curious to see Spears play at NT though.
Julius Jones
Ha!! Do we need to worry about that 1 yard wonder?

uh, he's had some pretty good games........
this year. Not spectacular, but pretty good. Rule #1 Never underestimate your opponent and you don’t think Julius Jones has something to prove?
True dat
but…man he didn’t do sh*t for us. One yard, down. Somebody would lay a little fingernail on him, SMACK down he went, drove me crazy I wanted to kill him!

He is one of three Cowboys to have a 1000 yard season
Lifetime Cowboys Fan from the Swamps of Jersey
Four Cowboys
Hill, Dorsett, Walker and Emmitt
Nope. He was still pretty good though.
Maybe he would have if he started or even played in all 14 games in 70 or 71, but he didn’t.
I forgot that.
He played in patches of the season, got dinged here and there. Also split carries with Calvin.
"We'll see." --Bill Parcells
He got us the SB in 71 though. Only his 'attitude', or was it Tex, kept him from being a hall of fame player.
Family, Friends, Cowboys, Beer & BBQ. Life is good!
Julius had something to prove last year when we played them on turkey day
and he didn’t squat. In fact, he fumbled the ball and was pretty much benched in the 2nd half. I still have that game on DVR from last season. That’s when they broke out the awesome turkey dance.

EXPLETIVE!!!
What kind of knee sprain is it?? MCL I assume because an ACL he’s done for the season.

This was the update
Jay Ratliff bruised his right knee in Thursday’s practice but he does not have any ligament damage.
From DMN
Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.
that makes no sense
because the definition of a sprain is ligament damage, some type of tear to a ligament.
In Romo we Trust
It makes no sense that it's a bruise?
Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.
no, that the MRI said it was a sprain
and now they are reporting no ligament damage and saying it’s a bruise, where did this diagnosis come from ?
In Romo we Trust
Dr Archer who consulted with Dr Horn and Dr JJT
Not sure. It’s just what popped up on DMN’s blog
Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.
Archer said its a bruise at 2:58pm.
At 3:02, Timmy Mac wrote he had swelling.
Ratliff, who did not practice Friday, underwent treatment for swelling in his right knee after practice.ESPNDallas
AT 3:10 Rob Phillips wrote this:
After starting nose tackle Jay Ratliff sprained his knee in Thursday’s practice the Cowboys had to start working on contingencies in case their Pro Bowler cannot play Sunday.

Maybe
He strained his bruise by trying to play instead of letting the bruise heal. Idiot!
Maybe they called it a strain until they realized there was no damage and now they are going with bruise to explain the swelling.

Maybe
he sprained his bruise before he bruised his sprain.
Sounds like he dinged up his knee enough to sit out of practice. Not time for a living will just yet.
Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.
yeah, but there is a huge difference between a sprain and bruise

More on Jay Ratliff's knee injury
from DMN blog
More on Jay Ratliff’s knee injury
2:58 PM Fri, Oct 30, 2009
Todd Archer/Reporter
Jay Ratliff bruised his right knee in Thursday’s practice but he does not have any ligament damage.
He was receiving treatment today and will continue to do so tomorrow in hopes of playing. He last missed a game because of injury in the 2007 season finale when the coaches rested him at Washington with a knee injury and homefield advantage wrapped up.
Ratliff did not practice and is listed as questionable to play against Seattle.
If Ratliff cannot play, then Junior Siavii would make the first start of his career and Marcus Spears would serve as the backup. Jason Hatcher would take over Ratliff’s role in the nickel and dime defenses.
“We think it will get well but how quickly it will get well we don’t know for sure,” coach Wade Phillips said.
Ratliff leads the Cowboys defensive line with 31 tackles. He also has two sacks, five tackles for loss and 10 quarterback pressures. He has also blocked a field goal attempt.
“He’s a Pro Bowl caliber player and he’s playing at that level this year again,” Phillips said. “He’s not out yet but if he weren’t to play that certainly sets you back some.”
Good thing Siavii looked good against the Falcons.
And I've seen Bowen making plays...
would be nice to see Hatch do the same.

this completely contradicts the earlier report
that said a MRI revealed a sprain. Which one is correct?
In Romo we Trust
Well...
Playing Hatch and Sivali might be a good thing…
We may find out how these guys can play in Marcus’s contract year. And I don’t think we need him to beat Seattle… Their running game isn’t all that good and we can get pressure without him.
McGruber!
"We think it will get well but how quickly it will get well we don’t know for sure," coach Wade Phillips said.
Has Phillips EVER answered a question?
Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, "where the heck is the ceiling?"
A little late to act all surprized from seeing a coach do this...
… Parcells was known for doin exactly the same thing… We haven’t seen a Coach answering this type of questions since the days of Campo…
Viva México! Go Cowboys!
Exactly, sir.
Techniques and strategies not that different. Biggest difference: style.
Big Bill had a New Jersey swagger, brusque, sarcastic. Confident. Wanted big players that physically beat the guy across the line.
Wade is Texas ’ol boy. Quiet, sincere, knows his manners. Likes ’em fast, but big where you need it, like Igor “Strong LIke Bull” Olshanksy.
Both of them bluffing when talking about injuries before games..
"We'll see." --Bill Parcells
At this point, I'd rather sit him...
I’d rather sit him for the Seahawks game and have him for the Eagles game than risk worsening the injury against the Seahawks.
have him dress
for the game and be available if needed. Each game is important.
+1

This Makes Sense
Rest the Rat; preserve the Rat. Let’s see what Spears can do in the middle and give Bowen and Hatcher a chance on the outside. Big Boy Savii is no more than a temporary player – although he might surprise . . . he is getting to that age where he might develop more and make a career from himself.
The Boys do seem to have some backups that can play.
Granted they are not Rat, but who is?
Tom Landry=the greatest football mind ever.
no one
he’s one of a kind as an undersized agile NT, arguably the best NT in the league
but I think we can beat Seattle without him, if he needs at least reduced snaps to be ready for next week’s divisional game.
I think so too...
Get him ready to go against the Eagles. You never what the backups can do until they get a lot of action in real time.
Tom Landry=the greatest football mind ever.
Were screwed without Ratliff....
We should be able to get by this game without him, but we need him for the Eagle game….Another reason we need a NT in the offseason.. We will probably see more Spears at NT if Rat cant go….
"Austin made the play, Austin saved the day" Brad Sham
I say rest him til the Philly game
We’ve heard all week that Seattle’s Oline is in disarray. Well, what better time to start Junior. If he can at least clog the middle and occupy a couple of linemen I think we can win this one. I guarantee you next week Westbrook will be over his headache and become ours and we will need all hands on deck!
If you guys have learned anything
it’s that the Wade regime purposely makes injuries out to be less serious than they really are.
someone please name me a time when someone returned earlier than expected?
if the initial report was serious, and the secondary reports less so, i’m inclined to believe the early reports.
here’s hoping i’m full of BS

Yeah
If he plays, it better only be a bruised knee. Dallas has a tendency to rush players back too soon.

what about pac
that neck thing went from season ender to possible career ender to playing the next week since the swelling supposedly went down.
Just a guess
But he could have bruised the miniscus (lining over bones in knee joint) in his knee.
Miniscus
If it’s that it will be subject to continued swelling, and pain ……
Had one several years ago, and it took a long time to heal………..
