7 Statistical Nuggets To Think About
Random statistical thoughts and musings after four weeks.
1. Stuck In A Moment And Now You Can't Get Out Of It
Carolina. Leading 13-7 early in the fourth, 2nd and 1 on the Carolina 1, you have the chance to put away the game. The right right thing to do is to call a post pattern where your receivers have to jump to catch the ball - and miss. Not once. Twice.
Denver. Two plays left to try to score a touchdown to tie the game. The right call is to throw the ball to your number-four receiver covered by Champ Bailey. Twice.
2. Solid As A Rock
Hats off to Old Faithful, Jason Witten. Jason has caught 24 of 27 passes thrown at him so far this year. That's a reception percentage of 85%. No one in the NFL last year had a higher percentage. Marion Barber led the league last year with 85% (52 of 61).
3. Running To Stand Still
"We want to be a top 5 rushing offense" Wade declared publicly in the pre-season. Too bad he forgot to send the Memo to Garrett.
Over the first four games, the Cowboys still favor the pass 54% vs. the rush. That is down from the 58% of last season, but not by much. Granted, both Barber and Jones have missed a game so far, but YPA is up from 4.3 last to 6.0 this year. I can't really see a big reason not to run the ball a little more.
The first four games this year saw the Boys rushing 110 times for 665 yards. Last year they rushed 101 times in the first four games, for a less filling 496 yards.
Against Denver, Romo was asked to throw the ball 42 times. When we air the ball more than 40 times, we are usually in trouble. We lost both games in 2008 (WAS, BAL) where Romo threw more than 40 times. And while we won all three 40+ games in 2007 (BUF, DET, CAR) the combined margin of victory in those three games was 9 points.
A healthy Marion Barber had only one carry for two yards in the second half. Wade said he 'didn't know why Barber didn't touch the ball more.' Cool Hand Luke summarizes the situation best: 'What we've got here is failure to communicate.' [Edit: I may have been suckered into this one, see ScarletO's post below]
4. Don't You (Forget About Me)
Oh, how I loved the talk in the off-season about 'spreading the ball around'. Now, as you well know, stats don't lie, so here's a look at how well we've spread the ball so far this year vs. the first four weeks last year.
| Week 4 2009 |
Targets | Catches | % caught |
Yards | Week 4 2008 |
Targets | Catches | % caught |
Yards | |
| Williams | 25 | 11 | 44% | 214 | Witten | 37 | 27 | 73% | 363 | |
| Witten | 27 | 23 | 85% | 212 | Owens | 36 | 17 | 47% | 264 | |
| Crayton | 24 | 11 | 46% | 199 | Crayton | 22 | 15 | 68% | 192 | |
| Choice | 16 | 12 | 75% | 92 | Austin | 12 | 7 | 58% | 172 | |
| Austin | 12 | 5 | 42% | 81 | Barber | 15 | 12 | 80% | 115 | |
| Hurd | 7 | 4 | 57% | 69 | Bennett | 6 | 3 | 50% | 57 | |
| Barber | 4 | 4 | 100% | 58 | Stanback | 2 | 2 | 100% | 24 | |
| Bennett | 10 | 4 | 40% | 40 | Curtis | 5 | 5 | 100% | 17 | |
| Jones | 2 | 1 | 50% | 30 | Choice | 1 | 1 | 100% | 8 | |
| Anderson | 2 | 1 | 50% | 5 | Jones | 1 | 1 | 100% | 3 | |
| Total | 129 | 76 | 59% | 990 | Total | 137 | 90 | 66% | 1215 | |
Couple of points to ponder:
This year, the top three receivers were targeted with 59% of all throws, down from 69% last year. So yes, the ball is being spread around a little more.
However, the 4 wide receivers this year have a combined reception rate of 46%, down from 57% last year. Perhaps this is due to Romo throwing to 'imaginary 7' 6" wide receivers' as Grizz so eloquently put it, perhaps the route running is sloppy, perhaps it's something else altogether. Whatever it is, it is high time for Romo and his WRs to get on the same page. And that goes for Bennett as well.
And here's the thing: Witten is showing everybody that it can be done! Man, 6 weeks ago I talked about the 2 TE set to anybody who couldn't get away fast enough, now I kind of hunker down in corners and avoid eye contact.
5. Here Comes The Rain Again
Without significant improvements, the passing game after four games (990 yards) is on track for a 3.960 yard season. That is so close to last years' 3.988 effort (which included three games by the formidable Brad Johnson), it's not even funny anymore, and has a distinctly 8-8, non-playoff-ish smell.
6. Do They Know It's Christmas Time
Romo has now gone two consecutive games without a touchdown pass for the first time since he took over the starting job in 2006. The good news about this: It looks like Christmas is really early this year, and we should expect sunshine in December!
7. The Long And Winding Road
Next week, we're facing the 0-4 Chiefs. With a little luck we'll be heading into the bye 3-2 and can then hunker down and fix what needs a-fixin', because our schedule will only get more difficult after that. Here's a look at the NFL Strength Of Schedule based on all teams' 2009 record for the remaining 12 (in some cases 13) games.
| NFC | OPP Win Percentage (Week 4 09) |
OPP Point Differential (Week 4 09) |
AFC | OPP Win Percentage (Week 4 09) |
OPP Point Differential (Week 4 09) |
|
| PHI | .608 | +148 | BAL | .604 | +39 | |
| NYG | .605 | +120 | OAK | .574 | +88 | |
| CAR | .580 | +123 | DEN | .532 | +28 | |
| WAS | .568 | +112 | KC | .521 | -7 | |
| STL | .565 | +135 | TEN | .511 | +28 | |
| ATL | .560 | +137 | CIN | .500 | -34 | |
| TB | .558 | +118 | MIA | .489 | -8 | |
| CHI | .556 | -1 | HOU | .489 | +2 | |
| DAL | .533 | +67 | IND | .479 | +8 | |
| DET | .511 | +23 | NE | .468 | +37 | |
| MIN | .500 | -40 | SD | .468 | -51 | |
| GB | .447 | -57 | PIT | .458 | -81 | |
| SF | .444 | -66 | CLE | .458 | -65 | |
| ARI | .412 | -151 | BUF | .435 | -90 | |
| SEA | .391 | -111 | NYJ | .413 | -132 | |
| NO | .364 | -209 | JAC | .375 | -148 |
Note that the 4-0 Saints will play a total of 5 games against teams that haven't won a single game yet this season (2x CAR, 2xTB, 1x STL). Incredible.
Interesting thoughts from foyesboys:
The combined record of the teams the NFC East is playing this weekend is….1-14….one and fourteen!!! Taking out the giants division wins, the combined record of all the teams the East has beat is….0-30……thats CRAZY.
The NFC east could sweep this weekend, have all its teams over .500…and the only team with a win over a team with a win will be the Giants over the Raiders….the combined opponent win total would be 1-44.
This is the most bizarre early season scheduling I’ve ever seen.

wow
I cannot believe the saints schedule is that bad.
Also, this whole division after this week will have gone through most of the easy part of their schedule (aside from oakland). Noone aside from us has really been tested at all, but we haven’t done well in those tests.
I think those receiving catch % numbers have a lot to do with Romo…you’re looking at 10+ plays already EASY this year, probably more like 15-20 that hes missed. That would have major impact on those stats.
This chiefs game is a MUST WIN, but if we can get into the bye at 3-2, it will give us time to work out some of the kinks hopefully. If we get in at 2-3, I have a feeling this season will tailspin.
Great post again OCC
when I get some free time, I’m going to decipher the stats in those tables you provided.
keep up the good work!
Tom Sawyer
Just as good ‘ol Tom tricked some poor kid into painting that fence, you were duped by Wade’s postgame report. It sounds as if Marion Barber III actually suffered some tightness in his quadriceps after the long break at halftime.
Of course, Tom came off as quite witty, while Wade…well…
As far as the players in the Limelight, Choice has really taken Marion’s role in the passing game. Hurd has offered a little more depth to the wide recieving corp, but Bennett and Austin have failed to make a significant improvement and regressed, respectively.
Bennett was being counted on as another large big-play target in the center of the field. Martellus has fewer yards this season than last year.
Austin was specifically mentioned by Jerry as one of the receivers that was being stymied by Owens needing the ball so often. Miles also needed to develop in order to give the Cowboys a deep threat. None of that has happened so far, and defenses are starting to pack-in because of a lack of a long-ball threat.
Thanks for pointing that out
I may have gotten suckered into that one, and have added an edit to the post.

By the way...
Did you realize that the offense (that Garrett is apparantly mismanaging) is now ranked number one in the NFL in yards per game?
After five weeks, the running game is ranked 3rd, and the passing game is 8th in yards gained per game. Comparitively, the defense is ranked 17th against the run and 28th versus the pass in yards per game.
The offense has four former first round picks playing, with Felix Jones being the only first round pick used by the Cowboys in the draft: Roy Williams, Marc Colombo, and Leonard Davis are the other former first rounders. Conversely, Dallas has used six first round picks on defense (Terrence Newman, Mike Jenkins, DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Marcus Spears, and Bobby Carpenter). In addition, Keith Brroking was a former first round pick (12th in 1998).
This team has a defensive problem, and it does not appear to be completely due to talent.
It has not escaped my attention
that our offense, despite all the gloom and doom being spread currently, looks good statistically. There are some aspects of the offense that don’t look quite so good, like 3rd down conversion, completion rate and red zone efficiency, but overall it could be a lot worse.
I agree with your point on defense, and I may just steal it for my next post on stat nuggets.

Romo has lingering affects from rib separation?
Watching the games this year has shown that Romo is off the mark more often than not. He started well in Tampa but most of his big plays were over the top, lay the ball in the spot. After a few more games, and hits to the ribs, he overthrows receivers even when he has open throwing lanes. He misses on the bullet passes that he used to make, e.g. Witten’s foot interception. Last night, Farve showed how to hit a receiver in stride.
This makes me wonder if the rib injury suffered in the Eagle debacle is lingering? I have separated my ribs from the cartilage and it is the worst pain I have ever felt. It is like having an ice pick stabbed into your side when you least expect it. An errant move or even breathing can bring it on. Mine took over a year to stabilize, and two years to become an infrequent problem.
Maybe the team does not want to mention the rib pain to avoid a bullseye on Romo’s side. But how do you go from one of the most accurate passers in the league to Jason Campbell’s league? (Couldn’t resist the Deadskins dig!)
Great post
I too was jocking the the 2 TE package and now feel as if it has backfired on me.
