Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

Tale of 2 extremes ... can we please calm it?

I know that the loss yesterday was tough.  Romo couldn't hit an open receiver at all.  I was angry just like every Cowboys fan.  It bugged me (Austin being wide open bugged me the most.)   But I digress.

Coming into work today, I decided to check up on BTB since I didn't really get to log in yesterday.  I knew people here would be upset, and wanted to see what kind of comments were made ..... and WOW!!!  I've seen everything from "It'll be OK" to "We suck" to "BRING IN CRABTREE!!!" to "BENCH ROMO!!  HE'S GARBAGE!!" ..... even comparing him to "Demarcus" Russell.  Wow.

So, I decide to go to the Broncos blog to see what their fans are thinking .... and .... wow.  I see nothing but love.  Things from "I wouldn't want any other head coach besides McD" to "TAKE THAT HATERS!!!" to getting all excited that people are calling them the best team in the league .... to calling John Clayton a "b***h."  Wow.

It's all quite comical to me, really.  It's week 4 of the 2009 NFL season, and now the Cowboys are done, toast, garbage .... and the Broncos are going to win the Super Bowl.  Romo apparently isn't an NFL quality QB anymore.  Jason Garrett sucks (starting to agree a little).  Wade Phillips should be fired right now.  TRADE FOR CRABTREE!!!!  McD is the greatest coach ever.  Orton is a great QB.  Their defense is better than the Ravens D of 2000.

Can we please just calm down?  The season is 1/4 through, for christ sakes.  There's still 12 games left.  Look at the season in 4 parts.  First part for the Cowboys .... underachieved.  Came out with a 2-2 record.  Only wins came against teams that are a combined 0-7.  But, the teams they lost to .... a combined 8-0 .... could it be that the Cowboys just lost to 2 teams that are just better than them?  I think so.  Does it mean that everything needs to be blown up?  Not really.  Something is wrong in Big D (playcalling I think), but it's not the end of the world.  The next game is against a bad KC team, which Big D can win.  They go into the bye at 3-2, get Felix and Barber 100% healthy, and play the Falcons at home, followed by a home game against a bad Seahawks team.

As far as the Broncos go, can't blame their fans for being excited, but they're on the opposite end of the extremes than we are.  I was 100% wrong about them, their D is real.  They'll give up some points, but they're legit.  Their offense is decent.  I think they'll win the AFC West.  But let's be honest here, it's 4 games into the season, and there's a lot of ball to be played.  They're on the right track, but they're not the best team in the league.

Basically, we all knew how Romo was before the season started.  He's going to win us some games, but he's also going to lose a couple.  It's give and take with him.  We all knew this.  If you don't like him because of that, so be it.  He has the ability to be a top 5 QB in the league, he just needs to consistently show it.  I think the issue is playcalling, but that's just me.  I don't like it at all.  We have 3 good RBs, so we should be running the ball a lot.  We don't have the WR core to be throwing 60% of the time.

and I know I shouldn't use "we" when describing the Boys ... but it's easier to type "we" than "The Cowboys" .... so sue me.

I'm done venting.  Now, onto the Chiefs!

Absolutely....

What a breath of fresh air. If I wasn’t up to my eyeballs in training for my Soldiers right now, I would pen my thoughts as well. This is by far not even close to the worst team we have ever seen from the Cowboys. People need to get off suicide alert and chill the “f” out……

Used to be CowboyinIraq at BSR, but I am not in Iraq anymore, so that didn't really make much sense........

Great post w_t_c

You sound like me…I’m one of the voices of reason at MileHighReport.com. I’m very excited about the Broncos chances this year…like you I think they will win the AFC West, but hey…this is JUST week 4! We have New England next week…that is all I care about right now…how are we going to beat them? PLAYOFFS!? YOUR TALKING PLAYOFFS!?….PLAYOFFS!? One week at a time please. Start talking playoffs when you’ve clinched a birth…start trash-talking playoffs when you’ve clinched home-field advantage for goodness sake! Until then, you have accomplished NOTHING.

Back to the Cowboys: You guys will run all day vs the chefs…and I’m not just saying that because they are a hated division rival…their team is still rebuilding and they are not playing well at all. If I were a Cowboy fan, I’d have a lot of faith in your ground game vs KC.

Also, their passing game doesn’t scare me at all. Double Bowe, put 7 in the box and make them throw the ball.

very good post

I’ve been saying this for a month now, it’s too early to draw conclusions about this team or any other for that matter.

This team will create it’s identity after the bye week when they face Atlanta, Seattle, Philly, and GB.

I think we’ll see if the naysayers are right and the team is truly mediocre, or if this team will prove them wrong. Should be fun to watch.

I was not happy with the loss, I agree with what DCfanatic posted after the game

they fought hard, did not quit and it was a rough game until the end. I am glad to see that they are sticking together and acknowledge that they have to play better and stick up for each other. Anyone else think the msm wants RW to become TO, you can see the same questions and you can tell that RW is aware of what they are trying to get at.

Romo needs to find his rhythm, in the past those plays that went over the WR heads would have been completions, but he has this season to find his way; he is not going to be benched for a performance like that.

Nice post

I gave it a rec. I’m with you because the big point right now is 2-2. We got problems, they may be fixable, but we won’t know until they play the games.

BTW, I use ‘we’ for the Cowboys all the time. It is convenient shorthand, but it’s also how I feel. This team would not exist except for us fans. I consider myself a very minor stockholder in the organization, and make no apologies for using ‘we’ when discussing the Cowboys.

The Giants in 2007

Their record going in 4 games? 2-2.

Fans wanted to part ways with Eli Manning? Yes.

Was their season over? No.

The only way in which a season can be over after 4 games is if something goes seriously wrong in the health department.

The season's not over

but it doesn’t mean it’s not right to be worried. This team has flaws, and I believe it is better to be exposed early in the year than towards the end. It may be wishful thinking on our parts that the Cowboys somehow turn it around, and heat up at the end of the year all the way to the Super Bowl, but here’s to wishful thinking!

by bryangene on Oct 5, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, I'm certainly worried

Inconsistency is a problem that the team has carried since the days of Bill Parcells… A hurdle that they still need to jump and one that I don’t know if they can…

I’ll continue to watch because I’ve seen cases of teams finding what’s needed to jump.

Oh but wait.....

According to the experts on this here blog (i.e. everyone who hates Romo and the like) we can’t hold a candle to that Giants squad. Yes the same Giants squad whose QB threw 4? interceptions at home against the Vikings and was rolled. The same Giants team whose QB was on the way out in his 4th year as a starter and was already in some circles being considered a bust and a waste of a trade. Hmmmmm….interesting this is. But we have nowhere near that good of a team.

What other teams were 2-2 that year?

And how did they end the season? Are you suggesting that the way to win the Super Bowl is to start 2-2? Otherwise, I don’t see the relevance of what the Giants did.

Yes - Thank you

My God, it seems no matter what we do – we suck. We win? We didn’t win big enough or weren’t sharp enough – we lose? we’re the worst team ever. I know we as a team live in a fishbowl, much like the Yanks and the Lakers, and that’s fine but dang..get it together.

by makeit6 on Oct 5, 2009 2:19 PM CDT reply actions

I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this yet (probably have since there’s about 10,000 collective comments and posts regarding yesterday’s game), but remember the last 2 seasons? Remember how good the Cowboys looked through four games in ‘07 and ’08? They looked awesome. Romo looked awesome. We were Super Bowl bound. Then we sucked balls down the stretch, and “better luck next year” happened. Now, I’m not saying it’s going to be the exact opposite because we started off slow last year, but in football — and in life — it’s never beneficial to to peak too early. Recent examples of peaking too early: ’07 Pats, ’07 Cowboys, ’08 Jets. Recent examples of peaking late: ’07 Giants, ’05 Steelers, ’08 Steelers.

The bottom line is, the Cowboys are 2-2 with an “easy” game and a bye coming up. Most of their problems are fixable, and it sets up perfectly for us to peak late and go on a nice run. Whether or not Garrett, Wade and Romo can fix the problems remains to be seen, but there’s a lot of football to be played.

by Jordan Sams on Oct 5, 2009 2:46 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

I posted that on another post. It is EARLY in the season to panic. Not to say that nobody should be concerned. Remember prior seasons when we started hot only to get cold at the end? We just need to see if this team can fix what ails them. They have alot of season left to do it.

I am staying positive! I just hope they are!

If nothing else...

Posts like these will at least make me feel better about watching this team next week. I know it is early in the season and there is a lot of football left to play. But as a fan of this team, a true fan that would watch every game and root just as hard if we had an 0-16 season, something about this team just doesn’t sit well with me.

I like all the guys we have playing and think the criticism thrown their way is often harsh and driven by a MSM that would love for this team to fail. But there is still something about this team that just isn’t right.

Truth be told, we have played four weeks of pretty bad and inconsistent football and are 2-2. Things could be worse but NOW is the time to right the ship and start the climb.

Beware D-Ware

by WittenRocks on Oct 5, 2009 5:03 PM CDT reply actions

My problem is

I get that the season is only a quarter over but what exactly have any of you seen in the past from Wade or Garrett that gives you any sort of confidence moving forward?

Notice I did not mention Romo because we have all seen Romo play much better than this. I think that this is him trying to play conservatively and it is ugly. If he can’t let loose his skills in a conservative gameplan then I say let him loose and live with the consequences.

But for coaching, Wade has never done anything as a headcoach that would lead me to believe he can turn this team around and Garrett is a freaking enigma, quite frankly. Some of his play calls are just unexplainable and the preseason is the time for tinkering, not in the 4th game of the season.

If this team weren’t “established” and in some sort of rebuilding mode, I’d have more hope but it is really hard for me to convince myself that the head guys are suddenly going to “turn it on” and inspire this team to greatness.

by Billito on Oct 5, 2009 5:36 PM CDT reply actions

Venting is good.

We will bitch, hope and pray the coaches see the same problems we do and address them. Wade doesn’t inspire me that way, but I’ve been wrong before { just ask my wife}. We will support them each week anyway . They are the Cowboys.

by oldboysfan on Oct 5, 2009 6:58 PM CDT reply actions

I agree with you aside from the Romo comment

at this point, hes really struggling. This isn’t normal “you win some you lose some” romo. This is a qb whose really struggling with his accuracy and confidence i think. Can he come through? certainly. I’m not giving up hope. But I’m not as confident as i was a couple weeks ago.

But on the rest of your comments…I agree with you. People need to have some perespective about this game. We’re 2-2. We’ve played frustrating ball in the last 3 of them, and are 1-2 in those games. But this nfl season is LONG. While the early part fo the season does matter in terms of jockeying for whose the favorite in november and ddecember, all those losses do is put us behind the 8 ball. When you consider the eagles have yet to beat a team with a win, and the giants only legit wins are over us and Washington…we really have no idea how good any of these teams are.

I would be SHOCKED if things didn’t significantly change for better or worse over the course of this year.

For example, last year around midseason, Wade started playing the young guys, Newman got healthy, and our defense suddenly picked it up. Romo, our rbs got hurt, TO showed serious signs of decline, and our offense worsened dramatically.

While I doubt we’ll see as stark a contrast this year, I’d be surprised if our offense (especially our qb) played this bad the rest of the year. Who knows – maybe the rookies will provide the depth we need at lb and our defense will be able to dominate over the whole 60 minutes and win us games we could’ve won against denver and NYG even with bad qb play.

This echoes a similar fanpost I made after the Giants game.

After some time and thought I realized there were a lot of posts born of frustration. I used to say much worse things about this team during particularly bad performances. The difference was, it wasn’t recorded on a website for later playback thank god. I realized I said some things that were way out of bounds and I said them because I was highly pissed after a loss. Maybe people should wait an hour or two after a game to say whats on their minds but this website is lit up like a christmas tree during a game. Thats why I generally refuse to read the game day comments or just skim over them at best.

by Benthere on Oct 5, 2009 9:20 PM CDT reply actions

Nice post

definitely what I’ve been thinking. Some fans must like to go to pieces after a loss. No one expected the Cowboys to go 16-0, it’s not like we’ve been blown out, nor are we watching a team that’s 0-4. 2-2 which could have been 4-0 with a few less mistakes.

Harry: Huh! I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this.
Lloyd: I was thinking the same thing. That John Denver's full of shit, man.

Just from reading some comments last night, even that won’t be enough to make them feel better.

I just want to see the team improve as the season progresses and win enough to get into post season.

All a matter of perspective

We lost two games to 4-0 teams. Both losses were decided in the last seconds of the game.

exactly

If we were actually getting our asses kicked and Romo had a qb rating of 29, I could see the pessimism.

Cowboys just need to play better and improve, they have proven they can hang with any team in the league.

by Terry on Oct 6, 2009 4:48 AM CDT up reply actions

But again

I am not so concerned with being 2-2 as I am with the leadership of this team. Our coach is less inspiring than a bowl of melting ice cream and Garrett is a genius half the time and an idiot the other half. It is really hard for me to look at the men in charge and say “they can turn it around.”

As I said before though, I’d rather go down with gunslinging Romo than the sad guy taking snaps on sunday.

by Billito on Oct 6, 2009 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Great comment, and I agree that it doesn't pay at this point to get

too high or too low. The last couple of years, at this point, a lot of people had the Cowboys Super Bowl bound, and look how that turned out.

I also agree with what some others have said here: Let Romo be Romo. He’s not cut out to be a bus driver, and I get the feeling it’s driving him crazy.

by Fernie67 on Oct 6, 2009 1:38 PM CDT reply actions

We WILL lose more games this year, all but guaranteed

Are we going to see a total meltdown of the blog for each one? A fire Wade-Garrett-Romo-Roy-Newman-Ware-the waterboy thread? Can’t we have more than a tiny bit of faith that they will right the ship? This team has played better, and will play better again. I’m not sure why Romo was so off all game long, but do we really expect him to be that way from now on, seriously?

Some of you, jeez, get a grip already. This is a good team, not a perfect team, with room for improvement and not even playing to their usual standards. They will make adjustments and come out next week and do their best again, that’s all they can do. What are we, the fans, to expect of them more than that?

If they succeed, great, if they fail, they fail, why turn it in to a life-or-death crisis?

This from a fan that is genuinely worried about some of the things I have seen from this team, and seriously want to see some improvement from them. I’m not throwing them under the bus, though. I’ll support them right up until they turn in their playbooks for the season, and then we shall see what next season brings.
