Where is "IT"?

everybody always talks about the overused "IT" factors. he has "it" he doesn't ect.

But, I can tell you that after 4 weeks of football, there r 2 distinct "IT's" and neither of which we have.

- "IT" #1 -  The ability to make a play.

Defense:

We simply cannot do it. The defense played pretty well yesterday, I'll give them that, but they didn't make the big plays that they should have. (even that 4th down wasn't a huge play to win or lose the game). Sense and Spencer (who has been terrible thus far) both should have had picks. Newman was in great position on that Marshal TD and as usual he failed to make a play. Newman never makes the play, he's one of the most overrated DB's in the league. and what happened to Demarcus WHERE? he hasn't made a big play all year. Whatever "IT" is we don't have it, and we haven't had it in years and it's frustrating.

Offense:

maybe Felix has "it" he's always hurt and it's too early to tell and maybe Marion does too, and nobody else. It all starts with Romo (who I've always been a huge fan of). He lacks the "IT" which allow good QB's to control the game. His turnovers r dreadful and what's worse is that recently they haven't just been mental they've been mental mistakes and physical inadequacies. His body language last game was lethargic and pathetic. Don't HS coaches preach body language all 4 years? it's almost as if he has given up and then at the end he says well maybe I'll really focus and try to do something with a minute left. The problem is he always falls short. A friend of mine said it best "I like Romo I'm not a Dallas fan, I do like him though, but I just feel like he always blows it" And the worst part is, is that I am a Dallas fan and I do like Romo and Romo does ALWAYS BLOW IT. You know who I miss? I miss the Tony Romo who beat the packers in Dallas in a huge NFC game in '07, what happened to that guy? why do I feel like Romo has aged 6 years but not gotten better? but, hey it can't all be his fault so let's talk about somebody else. Whether we want to admit it or not, the offense misses "The Player" very badly. "The player" was always there drawing double coverage and opening it up for the other mediocre receivers (not including J--Wit). team chemistry is useless when you have no recievers that can get open being covered 1 on 1. RW isn't a deep threat and has trouble moving his 6-3 frame and getting open. Crayton isn't a deep threat and has had trouble creating seperation, Austin is fast and has done nothing in his career to prove he could be a real player this year, and thus far has been an afterthought. Hurd is what he is a #4 or #5 wideout, and that leaves us with Witten who is great and is getting tougher looks from the defense b/c the other guys r awful. None of our receivers can make plays consistently, which in turn hurts romo and then they stack the box and it hurts our run game. The offense needs help and won't get it this year. Wade and JG have 2 options really. Hope the run game dominates and ball control is good, and we win tough grind out games, or take the handcuffs of Romo and live or die by his smarts or lack thereof. Either way, we need plays, they r there to be made, but will someone make "IT"?

And short and sweet IT #2 - Mentality

I love Brooking's play and his whole attitude thus far. That kind of stuff is so contagious, look at Dawkins in Den, and Ray in baltimore, their attitudes set the tone for their teams and they play good, hard, smart, and tough football. Who else on Dallas can say they always play good, hard, smart, and tough football? Not Romo, not Flo, not anbody in the secondary ever, not spencer, not spears, where's D-ware been (see Anthony spencer)?not Martellus, not crayton, williams or hurdaustin (they r now one player who underachieved expectations) Who can anybody look to on this team to play good, smart, hard, and tough football? if u can, please show me. please. and next time flo jumps early somebody smack him in his head and act like you want to hold him accountable. and at least pretend to care.I wish somebody could show some killer instinct and some backbone. But they can't. It all starts with the coach who I fully supported getting this year to change things around, and so far it's looked like the same old gutless Dallas Cowboy team. Forget the X and O's it comes down to desire and execution. We lack both, and that starts with Wade. How about instead of saying after a loss " well yea this one's tough it's always tough when you lose, we had some opportunities it just didn't happen we'll go to work tomorrow" how about saying " we sucked today, we were pathetic, we're underachieving we played like ***, We're going to turn this around, this is unacceptable and it won't be tolerated, whatever we have to do we'll do it, we won't play like this again ever".....try that mentality maybe it can work. But Wade can't and neither can JG, and it's sad b/c it starts with them and trickles down to the rest of the team. I haven't given up on this team, but I've given up on their mentality; it cannot and will not ever win them games. I'm done.

Are you suggesting that on Offense....

….only Felix and Barber have “the ability to make a play”?

maybe Felix has “it” he’s always hurt and it’s too early to tell and maybe Marion does too, and nobody else.

Nobody else? What?

Quick Reminder:

Game #1 (TB)
1) T.Romo pass deep right to M.Austin for 42 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
2) T.Romo pass deep right to R.Williams for 66 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
3) T.Romo pass deep right to P.Crayton for 80 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
4) T.Romo pass deep middle to P.Crayton for 44

Game #2 (NYG)
5) T.Romo pass short right to Witten for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.
6) T.Romo up the middle for 3 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

Game #3 (CAR)
7) T.Romo pass deep middle to J.Witten 22 yards
8) T.Choice up the middle for 5 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
9) T.Romo pass short middle to R.Williams for 26 yards

Game #4 (DEN)
10) T.Romo pass short left to T.Choice for 28 yards
11) T.Romo pass short right to R.Williams on 3rd down, for 14 yards

when I say Make a Play

I’m not talking about lighting up the bucs or any other defeated team like carolina they should do that, that’s not what I mean. I’m talking about making plays in big games, where the team needs one. when’s the last time we really needed somebody to make a play in an important game and they did?? how about that last NYG drive? did anybody make a play? or how about that Marshall catch? did anybody make a play?

and I don’t care about a Romo dump pass that Choice took 28 yards in the 1ST QUARTER i care about the last 5 possessions of the football game where we were horrendous. And I care about that pass RW should have caught to end the half against Carolina. They simply don’t have that guy who at the end of the game you believe will make a play and put it to rest. (peyton, brady, ray lewis, troy p, ed reed, giant’s defense as a whole, favre, even santana moss,) we have nobody who when they take the field for the last either Offensive of Defensive possession I think “he’ll make a play he always does”

Disagree
Newman never makes the play

Did you not see the Carolina game? He put the nail in the coffin when the Cowboys offense couldn’t. That was only a week ago.

Harry: Huh! I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this.
Lloyd: I was thinking the same thing. That John Denver's full of shit, man.

by APerfectStar on Oct 6, 2009 12:57 AM CDT reply actions

That was

gift wrapped….yea he caught it and scored great. He is usually in position to make plays, and that makes him a good CB, but the fact is he rarely makes the tough ones, which keep him at just a “good CB”

Romo definitely has "it"

no question about “it”

In Romo we Trust

If by "it" you mean falling apart in situations where the team has momentum

…then, I agree.

The question is, can he shake IT?

We have enough "it"

Rat, Brooking, DWare,Witten,Jones, Barber and Romo and others too. Tony did not play well Sunday. Unfortunately, I think Garrett is trying to make him an Aikman clone. A pocket passer and game manager. This is not Tony’s style. As long as he is focussed on the mental aspects instead of using his natural talents I think he will struggle. Garret could easily call rollout passes that lean to Tony’s strenghth, I don’t see any. Drop and read is not his game. They may have killed the gunslinger.

by oldboysfan on Oct 6, 2009 8:01 AM CDT reply actions

exactly they did kill

the gunslinger, but just because we can run the ball doesn’t mean he has to manage the game. He needs to get back o his old self his ‘07 self, if he does that we’ll be fine, if not we won’t. Right now it looks like he isn’t confident in his throws and the play calling and it shows on the field

+1

I was concerned about this during the off-season. The passing attack in the 90’s was built around Aikman’s strengths and for whatever reason they’ve redesigned the modern passing attack around Aikamn’s strengths. Problem is that Tony is no Troy and Roy is no Michael Irvin for that matter.

Tony is Tony so please let him do what he does best. Get him on the move more with more roll outs etc. Don’t force him to be a timing and rhythm passer like Aikman was because that’s not his strength. Aikman used to throw to spots on the field where he knew a receiver was going to eventually be. Tony used to throw to whoever was open, hitting them in stride most of the time. Now he is being asked to throw to spots on the field like Aikman used to do, thus why we are seeing so many passes that look so badly off as he and his receivers are not on the same page about where they’re spots are. Romo also has a lighting quick release; which more underneath shorter routes would take greater advantage of. But as is usual for Garret every pass pattern is designed to develop 10 to 15 yards down the field without a single option that is ever underneath the coverage, and thus takes forever to develop and thus results in more sacks etc…

Roy is not Irvin either so please stop designing plays for him like deep outs. Let him run more posts, slants and crossing routes which are strengths of his. Some of the best coaches off all time design and call plays that utilize their player’s strengths. This bunch seems to try and force square pegs into round holes and make these players become something they’re not.

Think you nailed it.

Romos’ strength is on the fly, not the 3-5 step drop. He makes better plays on the run. The interception by Bailey was classic misinterpretation between Austins’ “spot” and where Romo thought he was suppose to be.

Garrett didn't fumble

Garrett didn’t throw the INTs
Garrett didn’t sail the ball high to invisible 7’6" receivers
Garrett didn’t lock in on Hurd on that last play
Garrett didn’t throw the ball 16 times against Champ Bailey

I never realized how meaningless coaching was…

Why in the world did Jerry ever fire Dave Campo?

I still have to wonder if any other OC in this league would have held their best receiving option (Witten) back on back to back plays from the 3 yard line in the final seconds. That must Tony’s fault too since coaching makes absolutely zero difference as to how good a team is.

Coaching is important...very important

but coaches are not to blame for improper execution or poor decision making on the part of the players

I’m sure that Garrett didn’t call for all those goofs, mishaps, fumbles, ints, penalties, forced passes, etc.

by BishopWest on Oct 6, 2009 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

coaches

are to blame when their offense hasn’t moved th ball since the 1st quarter and the gameplan hasn’t been adjusted. The offense looked bad against Carolina, and since the Giants game the passing game hasn’t been there. Why hasn’t there been any noticeable differences in gameplan? we don’t have the weapons to stretch the field. so let’s run the ball and use quick passes slants ect. to pick up yardage and work our way downfield. then after the defense comes up then take a shot, but every route was 8-12 yards, Romo had no time, and the passes weren’t getting caught so why not switch it up? coaching are to blame for inproper execution, because that means they haven’t put their team in the best possible position to succeed. and that DOES FALL on Wade and JG. sorry, they r terrible and I was the guy who was saying give them this year, give wade a 3rd year, and give JG another if he’s available. But now, get both of them out of here, they can’t do it nothing has changed in 3 years.

What?

congratulations – your suggestion is the identical game plan that Garrett had for the DEN game.

This is exactly what DAL did for over 3 quarters.

As a matter of fact, Garrett called a total of 53 runs or short passes before attempting even one deep pass versus Denver.

The first recorded pass, listed under NFL Game Center, thrown by Romo that was not a short pass, came with 10:01 remaining in the 4th quarter.

You’ve either got to like Garrett’s plan, or disagree with his and yours, because they are the same plan.
